Fun fact: In the TV cut of the film, the "Assholes" scene was also redubbed to tone down the language and replaced with "Morons", undoubtedly a call back to the film's original working title. "I don't believe it. I'm surrounded by Morons."

Italy might not have had a Pizza Hutt at the time, but Star Wars Jabba was called Jabba The Hutt just like in the US, so the joke would have made just as much sense.
I saw this movie for the first time in middle school band class. it was end of the year so the director just put a movie on and low and behold this masterpiece was presented. I was 12 at the time and I was on the floor. I'm sure now a-days someone would have complained but hearing "assholes" in a movie for the first time was amazing.
Funny story about this movie: I saw Spaceballs way before I ever saw Star Wars. Star Wars came out several years before I was born, but I was just about the right age to catch Spaceballs when it was new. I think they used to show it on HBO a lot, and my parents taped it. When I was about 6 or 7 Star Wars just happened to be on TV at my babysitters house. I was so confused by it because it was a lot like Spaceballs, but also it wasn't. So I ran and told my babysitter about this weird movie that was on and she couldn't help but laugh as she tried to explain the concept to me. Of course, at that age, the idea of a parody and the massive cultural importance of Star Wars were way over my head. But looking back now I can see why she found it so humorous.
After Lucas first dropped the SE version of Starwars, I always hoped Mel Brooks would do something similar with Spaceballs, just film the actors as they were, older, and badly inserted it, and then stated it was always meant to be like that. but now, I just hope he dusts off his comedy writing pen, and make the search for more money
Always wondered what happened to Rick moranis. It seemed like he was in a lot of movies and then just all of a sudden at some point you never heard from him again
I think I got my copy of the Spaceballs novelization from the Scholastic book fair in elementary school, so the theory of being sanitized for kids might be true. One thing that I remember from the novelization is that Yogurt turned out to be a regular sized person who was walking around on his knees, and had fake feet strapped to his knees with rubber bands. The author actually wrote a lot of books under the name Jovial Bob Stein back then. Like Star Wars, Spaceballs also had a followup TV series. This was a poorly animated cartoon that spoofed then-popular pop culture like the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies, for example. I think there was only one episode that spoofed the Star Wars prequels, and the rest were spoofing non-scifi things. (This was all prior to Disney buying Lucasfilm, so there were no spoofs of any of that stuff.)
I was about to write this quote, glad to see it’s here among the first comments and its impact on others , thanks friend, and thank you Minty for another fun and informative video.

Here in America, even before Goosebumps or Fear Street, Stine was still a huge part of the book fairs that would permeate elementary and middle school libraries .. to promote literacy. One of my fav bits of Spaceballs trivia is Tim Russ in that "combing the desert" scene. He went on to play Tuvok on ST Voyager!
@@forcewielder2000 that’s funny, she doesn’t look drewish
After watching for the 5 millionth time, I finally noticed Tim Russ says, "We ain't found SHIP!" Pay attention next time you watch👍 Idky it took so long for me to realize he was Tuvok too😁
@@gohawks3571 my bad, it just translated to fecal matter in my mind. That is one of my top 5 movie references to spit at people, and now it will be correct and good for the children’s ears that could hear such depravity 💯
I love when people claim that "something that raunchy wouldn't be made now", while weekly TV shows like Family Guy and South Park are far raunchier and still churning away. Brilliant narrative!
Star Wars is one of my top five favorite movies, and Spaceballs occupies the slot right next to it. This movie is a treasure the likes of Princess Bride. Bill Pullman was fantastic, but Moranis really stole the show. This is one of those movies I can watch on loop, and still laugh at every single joke!
Fun fact: In the TV cut of the film, the "Assholes" scene was also redubbed to tone down the language and replaced with "Morons", undoubtedly a call back to the film's original working title.
"I don't believe it. I'm surrounded by Morons."
Like Carface on All Dogs Go to Heaven
Yup, I can confirm. That's how the OLD TV edit handled it. For some reason when it's on TV now, they just completely remove that scene entirely.
@@KasumiKenshirou That's a tragedy. It's one of the most memorable scenes in a movie that's packed with memorable scenes. And the fact that a "made for TV dub" already exists...why would they do that? Put the scene back in, dammit!
In the cut I saw, they removed the reference completely. He asks "who made that man a gunner?" Then the officer replies "I did sir, he's my cousin." Then Helmet goes straight to "Keep firing!"
I saw a TV edit once where, after Vespa goes Rambo, they edited Barf to say "Holy Milkbones!"
I've only seen that edit once, otherwise they just bleep it out.
The "we ain't found shit" trooper. That's Tim Russ. Mr Tuvok to you.
In the Blu-Ray release Mel Brooks said that his inspiration for Spaceballs was when he was trying to come up with a title he kept thinking/saying space over and over, trying to think of what would go good with it, and someone yelled out, "Balls!" because they were upset about something completely unrelated.
And thus, the movie almost became "Ballsspace"!
“Lucas plays with his spaceballs”😅😅😅Damn Minty. You did it again😂
This is an all-time classic.
Great content, keep up the great work. Growing up with the 80’s movie catalogs was a privilege. Can you do a series on John Candy’s movies? The Great Outdoors, Summer Rental..etc, thank you in advance!
One of the spoofs that are almost better then the original movie^^
No. Just, no.
Too far bro.
That is almost better not are almost better.
Well it's definitely my favorite Star Wars movie. But I don't like Star Wars.
You might be able to say that about Robin Hood: Men In Tights (because up until Prince of Thieves and the exception being the Disney movie, not many people saw the Robin Hood movies). But not Spaceballs. As good as it is, it's not Star Wars.
maybe you could do a video on Tommy Boy or some of the other Chris Farley movies
Little Nicky!!!
Maybe you could do one on actors doing the same stupid shtick, like Sandler. Or on that stupid turkey song that I will never be able to evacuate from my mind. And yes, you are surrounded by assholes
why? he was a hack who basically ripped off John Belushi's entire career. and i say this as someone who came from the same town as Farley, his whole persona was stolen from a better, funnier actor
So glad about the cast we actually got for this movie.
Ron Graham and George Wyner. Both were actors that were in several Mel Brooks movies.
12:06 i always took it as like “blowing a raspberry”
Italy might not have had a Pizza Hutt at the time, but Star Wars Jabba was called Jabba The Hutt just like in the US, so the joke would have made just as much sense.
* Pizza Hut, one T.
@christopherheckman7957 Yes, i know, i should have used quotation marks, it was meant to be a play on words.
The scene where they're watching the vs tape of the movie while they're in the movie is fantastic
I have a copy of that book. Megamaid said, "I don't do windows."
One of the greatest movies of the 80's and best spoof movie.
Daphne Zuniga was smoking hot, I also liked her in the Fly sequel.
Yes, Spaceballs is one of the best Star Wars movies, just like Galaxy Quest is one of the best Star Trek movies!
I always thought Pizza the Huts sidekick was a play on Max Headroom
My favorite film of all time is without a doubt, Spaceballs!
I've said it before, and I'll say it again, Minty, you da MAN!!!
May the Swartz be with you 😎
Funny story about this movie: I saw Spaceballs way before I ever saw Star Wars.
I always thought pizza the hut was just named after Jabba the hut
After Lucas first dropped the SE version of Starwars, I always hoped Mel Brooks would do something similar with Spaceballs, just film the actors as they were, older, and badly inserted it, and then stated it was always meant to be like that.
but now, I just hope he dusts off his comedy writing pen, and make the search for more money
A movie I will stop and watch every time I am channel surfing.
8:56 I actually have that book!
And what Mega Maid said was “I DON’T DO WINDOWS!!!”
Always wondered what happened to Rick moranis. It seemed like he was in a lot of movies and then just all of a sudden at some point you never heard from him again
He retired to be a father.
His wife got cancer and they both agreed to give their kids a normal childhood
yeah, he basically gave up Hollywood when his wife got sick, sucks for us, but shows what a good guy he is
I think I got my copy of the Spaceballs novelization from the Scholastic book fair in elementary school, so the theory of being sanitized for kids might be true.
I'm a mog.
Half man half dog.
I'm my home best friend.
Best freaking line ever
I was about to write this quote, glad to see it’s here among the first comments and its impact on others , thanks friend, and thank you Minty for another fun and informative video.
"I'm my OWN best friend"
"stop looking up my can"
In Greece the film was titled "Μπαλάκια τρίτου τύπου" which translates "Balls of the third kind" after Spielberg's Close Encounters
YOGURT!
Excellent video. Spaceballs was a huge part of my childhood. I didn't get most of the jokes at time, but loved it anyways
May the Schwartz be with you, Minty.
Love the book, i had two copies but recently gave one away to an enthusiast but will never relenquish the last copy
Pizza The Hut wouldn't be called Pizza Pepperoni in Italy, as pepperoni means (bell) pepper in Italian. It's only salami in English speaking countries.
But yeah, Margarita doesn't make sense either.
I too was surprised that *"Goosebumps"* creator R.L. Stine did the novelization of *"Spaceballs".*
Dark Helmet--''Umm, HE did it''.
Lonestar: "WHAT?" (fight resumes)
I had the book as a kid. I got it from my school in one of the quarter annual or monthly or term book fares from Scholastic or Puffin. I also had the books for the movies Willow and Superman IV too.
Is this a repost or am I crazy lol
"Out of order? FUCK! Even in the future nothin' works!"
I love this movie.. i bet she gives great helmet lol
Amazing! I've got the SAME combination on my luggage! I saw this in theaters... I almost spewed coke on the row in front of me SO many times :D
"One million space bucks, we can pay off pizza the hutt."
Or else pizza… is gonna send out for you
I still love the movie. I remember watching it in the theater when I was a kid.
Give me paw! 😅
"Barf, we're not just doing this for money. We're doing it for a $h*tload of money!"
@@ladyv5655 "yeah, your right. And when your right, your right, and you your always right."
Enjoyable video, I love Mel Brooks and especially SpaceBalls, but… Please please please do something about the audio quality during your on-camera shots. I can recommend a good cheap microphone for you if you need…
RL Stine is Robert Lawrence Stine
Jovial means “cheerful, jolly”
Bob is another name for Robert
Hence Jovial Bob Stine. Looks like he used that name for fun books.
Loved the video
I kind of assumed it was a space pun as Jovial is jolly and the outer planets are the Jovian planets or giant gas/ise planets.
Very much so. He was also Jovial Bob Stine before he ever wrote as R. L. Stine. He helped create a kid's magazine called BANANAS distributed through Scholastic in the 1970's and 1980's wrote a bunch of kids books well. Here in America, even before Goosebumps or Fear Street, Stine was still a huge part of the book fairs that would permeate elementary and middle school libraries .. to promote literacy. I still have a few Jovial Bob Stine books in my collection from when I was young, as I was too old by the time the GB series came out.
I believe Jovial Bob Stine used to write for Mad Magazine. I had no idea he was also R. L. Stine!
Funny… she doesn’t look Druish
Oh. She looks druish. Really druish.
Great Video, as usual, Minty. Keep Em Coming
Perhaps this should be Spaceballs 2: The Search for the Original Script.
In 2022 I got reminded on Space Balls by a concert. They attempted the instant cassettes: You could buy the recording of that show before the show had been finished ... to be more precise, it was a code to download the recording later.
Nowadays we can get spaceballs merchandise. Bc screw George Lucas. George Lucas betrayed us, he sold his soul to disney and the wokeness.
"I am your father's, brother's, nephew's, cousin's, former roommate."
“What does that make us?”
“Absolutely nothing, which is what you’re about to become!”
Funny - that Spaceballs was called “the best StarWars movie”
I’ve always called Galaxy Quest “the best StarTrek movie”!
it's 2 words on both accounts, it's Star Wars and Star Trek,
with a space inbetween, not -----> starwars / and not -----> startrek
You've gone to plaid with this one, Minty! TYVM!!
You know those weird surgeries being pushed today where people think you can remove man parts and add girl parts and suddenly you're a girl? Well they just removed man parts and replaced them with pizza toppings and suddenly you're a pizza!
The renaming of Pizza the Hut to Pizza Margherita is to play off an actual Italian style of pizza that very popular there. Not quite as pithy, but at least it references something familiar.
8:25 that guy who played Pizza the Hut's henchman Vinny was played by director Rudy De Luca who directed the horror comedy Transylvania 6-5000 and his pals with Mel Brooks
One of my favorites back in the day and one of Mel Brooks funniest. Well made minty.
"May the Schwartz be with you."
