We lost my son at 19 weeks. He was coming early, and after a long night of trying there was simply nothing that could keep it from happening. I sang to him as his kicks grew slower and weaker, and when he finally came out, he was already gone. And he did look just like my son. Redder, smaller, with eyelids fused, but with the same fingers and toes and heart of my other children. And I count myself blessed that I can come home from work and see them standing there, alive and smiling. But I never forget the emotional onslaught of the night, and the emotionless anguish of the morning after I couldn't save the one.
Your children are a part of you. When your parents die, you were a part of them, they live on in you. But when your children die, the part of your heart that expanded to be filled with your love for them is amputated, crushed, destroyed. All that they could have been, gone from this world, and you despair for their lost life and the things they will never get to discover and be surprised and amazed by. The morning after, there is nothing new for you under the sun, and you feel guilty for seeing the sunrise because the one the dawn was made for does not get to see it.
I live on in hope that I will see my son again, and that where he is now, he is free.

It wasn’t until today that I understood this song. Today I was thinking about my abortion - I often refuse to allow myself to be sad because.. I did it, it was my choice. Today, thinking about it, this song came on and I cried for the first time since my abortion (over a year) I dream of her - always a girl. Of course, for those who have lost their child who was with them here in life, I’m so sorry. My sob story doesn’t compare.

Chelsea Simmons I know your comment is old but there has been rumors that this song was about her daughter that passed away. That this song is for her daughter. I have yet to find out of it's true though.
It doesn't have to be one or the other, it actually makes the most sense as a man having slept with a younger woman while dealing with his grief over losing his daughter and then feeling really messed up about it, which is why he'd say he couldn't tell anyone. So that would be about a lover and about the loss of a child at the same time.

This song is very sad, but such sadness probably cleanses the soul.

I think it's about her reminiscing who she once was before him, the beast, tore her, she is ashamed, but she is trying to bring herself up again. Sometimes we miss our youth, who we used to be before all the things we regret.
I've been listening to this song for years. Two days ago I had to put my baby kitty to sleep, to bring her suffering to an end after she bravely fought against cancer. Today I can't help but thinking that the lyrics perfectly fit : the feeling of powerlessness, restless mind, guilt, numbness after this final and irreversible deed, and not being able to tell anyone as most people cannot relate to the grief of losing a loved animal.

Hadn't picked up on the meaning of this song until recently. My heart is in pieces! Being the very lucky and blessed father of two fine sons, my wife and I have suffered the tragedy of miscarriages in the past, but never 'this'. Love to all coping and coming to terms with this loss, my thoughts will forever be with you.

Loss -Grief , especially that of miscarriage has not logic, there are no words to comprehend . Each being & experience is as unique as our finger prints. The morning after a loss, especially miscarriage hits hard , your entire body feels the loss & hormones make it even harder to deal with ( or at least this was my experience ) . Some do not tell others they are pregnant until they are past 12 week mark for various reasons, perhaps this was the case, I am not sure but sense possible could be the case . Some beings like myself often did not tell anyone as we were trying for 12 years & had a few miscarriages . There are so many reasons

I'd double-check your info, as I don't think it's quite right (I could be wrong though, wouldn't be the first time). She doesn't say what the song is about in the Spin Magazine as they don't interview her. In fact, the duality between the two songs mentioned in that article was just an observation by the 'journalist', and was based on the fact that this was the next song she made available after Desire. Moreover, she did make a comment about Desire being linked with another song elsewhere if I recall (which is what I believe you're thinking of), but it wasn't The Morning After, it was Feather.

I dont know the context for the song or lyrics but on my first listen I was struck by the thought that this song easily could be the pov of a serial killer. It feels like a regretful serial killer is singing to their victims, wishing to stop but unable to do so. Just my take!

When she fears the animals taking him away from her, it means she fears a child scaring away the guy. The animals tearing him away from her represent the animals of childhood. Stuffed animals. A child coming. When it says, "I pray you won't fear the animals," it's saying how the man feared a baby. She got rid of the child because it reminded her too much of the man that abandoned her. And when she says, "I would give anything," she's saying how she would give anything for her child back. That's just my interpretation, though.
