  • I vistited one of the most famous slums in the world, Dharavi. I got warned not to go there without a tour guide but I wanted to get the authentic experience and it certainly lived up to my expectations.
Dharavi is a locality in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, considered to be one of Asia's largest slums. Dharavi has an area of just over 2.1 square kilometres and a population of about 1,000,000. With a population density of over 277,136/km2 , Dharavi is one of the most densely populated areas in the world.

I've been getting negative comments about why I am going to slums and “promoting India as a poor country” so I'm going to explain here why I do it and maybe some of you will understand. Even though Ironically I've filmed 4 videos showcasing Modern Mumbai (Taj Palace, Phoenix Mall, Marine drive and Imagica theme park) but people are saying I only films slums. My channel is based on OFF THE BEATEN PATH travel destinations not upper class neighbourhoods and shopping malls.
    1) I go to these places because they are the best places for content, they have the most interesting and kind people who love to be on camera, often when I go to the nice areas in the city I get stopped for filming (it happened at Taj Palace, Every shopping mall and every theme park i went to) or people just camera shy and its really not engaging. I am not promoting India as a poor country at all, I'm showing interesting content that is very unique to this city, and throughout this video you may see how I positively showcase this slum as a producer of many useful goods and services aswell as generally a happy place.
    2) I go to these places because they are so different to everything I've ever known, I could drive 10 mins from my home in the UK and visit a boring modern shopping mall, but can I visit an area where 1 millions people live together in 2 square miles? This is so fascinating to me and I thoroughly enjoyed my time here.
If you have any constructive criticism to say please email me at contact@harryjaggard.com and I will gladly take it on board but to just say Im promoting India as a poor country is absolutely false.

You can’t please everyone bud, the more views you get the more negative comments you will get! Atleast it looks like the positive outweighs the negative :) There will always be people who want to find a reason to be negative, any person with half a brain can see that you’re just trying to spread positivity and show people another side of life they might not have seen

    • @GoodPalate

As you always say, the positive always outweighs the negative. The modernized areas people are usually more prone to sticking to there own life and there is always security reasons due to which we have restrictions. The areas visited where we have although poor or menial wage workers we can find happiness, welcoming spirit, love and peace and just engaging in a simple conversation makes them happy. Keep up the good work and enjoy your stay in India. You can't make the hyper nationalist happy all the time. Hoping you reach out to more and more people with your humility and jovial character.

No need to justify, India has 1.4 billion people with good number of hyper nationalists. You can't make everyone happy. We in India are used to hearing hundreds of opinions so ignore the negative comments and travel wherever you want just stay safe. No need to go to modern places just for the sake of pleasing a small section of your viewers as majority of us love original content and not sugarcoated. Love from India.

Offended is not the right word. Tired is. Slum tourism is a foreigner's thing. Mostly western ones at that. They come and then we hear about cliche lines that's the real India as if unless rest of us too live in slums, we are not real. Followed by how they are happier and some customary lines with some changes..
So slum tourism stereotypes India. At the same time it also stereotypes foreigners for Indians. Foreign tourists are offered slum tours arranged by people in the business. It's ironic sometimes, some times annoying, and sometimes insert eye roll moment. Hey a new alien landed in slums - flew thousands of miles to experience it. Congratulations!

most of the people who live in the slums of the big cities in India are the migrants from small villages. they all have their houses In the villages. they live in the slums because of the low rent. if they start earning more in the cities then they move to bigger homes.

Hey Harry it's great that you managed to show both the sides of Mumbai in a comprehensive and unbiased manner. As a Mumbaikar and as an Indian it is heartening to see the balanced nature of your videos unlike some of the others from your country. However just a reminder : this is probably the last you would see Dharavi as a slum as it is all set to change. By the next 5 years if you visit Dharavi you would be surprised to see that it will be transformed into a modern state of the art township with refurbished architecture and better amenities as the government is closely working on cluster redevelopment of the entire area. Already some of the land has been acquired and construction is expected to start in a few months. Mumbai City itself will wear a totally new and modern, sleek look in a couple of years time when South Asia's biggest underground Metro opens in Mumbai by 2024. There is a lot of work which is still in progress in this city and lot of it yet to start for expansion and modernization. Also a reason why you may have noticed that the city resembles some kind of a huge construction site.

Hey Harry, I am fine with you showing slums of India but don't promote it as touristic place. You should not romanticize poverty and misery! Its most cruel condition to live in. Its okay to record it for your content but do not present it as if a poster image of India. It's simply not true. Majority of indians are middle class and do not live in slums.

    • @MrAgolikeri
      @MrAgolikeri 2 года назад +8

I don't think he has done that. He is just showing the positive side of slum life. Most of us think that slums mean poverty , misery, and filth everywhere. But there is more to it that doesn't quite meet our eyes. And that was his intent behind showing Dharavi . I hope I am right , Harry. You can correct me if I am wrong.

@@thehawkseye3412 not really. Slums exist in every part of the world from Hong Kong to Honolulu , from Montevideo to Mongolia, from Rio to Riyadh . However, Mumbai's slums offer a unique perspective as they are not very far removed from the more 'civilised and advanced world' as you like to call it. In Mumbai, a swanky skyscraper is right next to a slum dweller's shanty standing in middle of a garbage and refuse, sometimes having a squat toilet clogged with fecal matter and dirt. This is what most foreigners find extraordinary. Now even in Muscat or Mombasa you won't be able to find a slum that's opposite an imposing glass and steel facaded structure.

People looked nice and relaxed without any arrogance. Particularly I liked the school children. They looked very nice and refine. I am sure that they will have a great future which is good for India.

Housing: "Virtually all housing has been constructed illegally, and is extremely crowded and small. Up to 5 people sleep in each tiny bedroom. But Dharavi is not only squalor." But you can buy a house there too. Rent can be as low as 3£ per month. Electricity is often illegal. But there is also this: "With a 69% literacy rate, Dharavi is known to be the birthplace of great innovation and entrepreneurship. This region is home to 5000 businesses owned by the inhabitants and 15,000 single-room factories, as well as a centre for the production of fast fashion companies like Zara, H&M, Giorgio Armani and more."

The place seemed very busy and commercialised rather than seeing their living accommodations. Very interesting Vlog. The people were amazing and seemed really friendly. Loved the shop keeper only wanting the price if the cap, just showed they may be poor but proud people.

I, myself a non Indian would love to see the best, the good, beautiful side India has to offer too lol not just dirty area & poor people. Great travelogue through India's famous slum! The place most definitely would never be on a travel agency's itinerary. So without your video, many would never see the place! Thank you. Did you notice, yes, it may be a slum and the majority of people living there may be poorer than dirt. However, an important point: you weren't accosted, robbed or otherwise bothered by the people living there! On the contrary, they were extraordinarily nice and pleasant - just regular people like you and I. It goes to show that, and not to generalize, but just because they may be lacking in monetary means, they're certainly not without their morality and moral standards. Sometimes you can learn quite a bit, from just a short half hour travelogue, such as this one! Thank you for that.
