This was a scene from the 1987 biopic La Bamba starring actor Lou Diamond Phillips in the role of the real life 1950s rock n' roll singer Ritchie Valens. The singing was actually done by the group Los Lobos which became a soundtrack for the film. Los Lobos even had their own music video with scenes from the film. Sadly the real Ritchie Valens was killed in a helicopter crash in 1959 along with popular singers Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper when he was just seventeen years old. I saw the movie when it came out in the theatre and have seen Los Lobos music video plenty of times back then. It was great film.

This video is from the movie La Bamba. That's the actor Lou Diamond Phillips, playing Ritchie Valens. Los Lobos did the cover of the song for the movie.
Ritchie Valens was only 17 years old when he died in a plane crash, along with Buddy Holly(22 years old) and J.P. Richardson(aka The Big Bopper)(28 years old). I read somewhere that when they found Ritchie Valens body, his head was split in half.

I was gonna point out that this is not Ritchie Valens but I see that many people have already beat me to it. The original is not as upbeat as this cover by Los Lobos is but the original is a great tune and Ritchie took a huge risk musically taking an old Mexican folk song and turning it into a rock song. The kid was way ahead of his time and had he not been killed at the young age of 17 I truly believe many would have him ranked today in the top 5 of greatest rock n' rollers of all-time!

Yep a scene from the movie la Bamba. Check it out. This was a reenactment of his last performance at a concert in clear lake iowa with the great buddy Holly and the big bopper Richardson. Their tour bus broke down so buddy Holly rented a plane to go to next city but could only take 2 others so flipped a coin between Richie and a then unknown musician Waylon Jennings. Richie won the toss and went even though he was terrified of planes. He didn't really win because the plane crashed and all died. He was just 17. Check out his other songs oh Donna, come on let's go

this was big because of all spanish words still got tons o play on many English US stations. When he, richie valens, buddy holly, and the big bopper, died together in a plane crash: that was referred to in Don Maclean's American Pie song as the day the music died, and because of his young age, to latinos, one could compare the Valens tragedy to Selena's death.

The original is great but unfortunately the only recording of it was from 1958-59 and the equipment was awful back then.. had the real ritchie had a chance to use modern equipment he would have killed it just the same as the Los lobos did...
RIP Ritchie... gone way too soon.. at only 17.. I will always remember the day the music died... we lost 3 amazing artists way before their time and they pioneered some amazing hits..
Would love to see a reaction to the original 1959 version by Ritchie... an amazing song but sadly never got the chance to re-record using good equipment. I can only imagine how it would sound.. ritchie was so talented.

India, simply find the movie "La Bamba," Watch it. It's the true story of Ritchie Vallens. The movie was made in the mid 80s I think. Everyone has seen that movie. Well, maybe not everyone, but almost. It tells the whole sad story from the 1950s Rock and Roll scene. It's when Rock was born.

In the movie we discover that Ritchie did not speak Spanish. His family did, but he refused to.
It is said that he hsd to learn this song phonetically.
His real last name wad Valenzuela.

Ritchie was also the first successful Latin Star. La Bamba is actually and Old School Mexican Folk Song that became a Pop Classic. You may have heard it Grease when Sandy & Danny see each other at The Frosty Palace and indirectly apologizes for his behavior at The Pep Rally. He had other Hits like "Donna" that he dedicated to his Girlfriend and The Paddy Whack Song as well as Ooh My Head. He died along with Buddy Holly & JP Richardson (aka The Big Bopper)in 1959. He was also exploited along with Chuck Berry Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers, the Platters, Antoine "Fats" Domino & Little Richard as The Black Acts who made Cameo appearances in Movies and although they could sing for the White Kids they couldn't mix with them. The Host Alan Freed was the fist Successful Disc Jockey but when he got busted for Payola (accepting money to play Rock Songs) his career was ruined and ended and died a couple of years later a broke homeless alcoholic.

Saludos India Reacts

That isn't Ritchie! That's Lou Diamond Phillips in the movie La Bamba. 🤣🤣🤣
He died in 1959 with Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper in a plane crash. That was "the day the music died" that is referred to in "Bye, Bye, Miss American Pie."

This is from the movie and this is an actor... But I think they did use Ritchie's voice... As you may know Ritchie Valens was on the plane that crashed with Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper in 1959...

India did you know that La Bamba as a Mexican folk song is rooted in the Afro-Mexican heritage of Mexico. Possibly from the state of Guerrero but I have to look that up.

Lou Diamond Philips who stared in the biopic La Bamba is neither Mexican or "Latino". He is Filipino-American but the Philippines was colonized by the Spanish Empire for 333 years.

He LOOKS like an actor because he IS. Lou Diamond Phillips did a great job playing Ricardo Valenzuela (performing name Ritchie Valens), but this is a clip from the biographical movie NOT the real Ritchie Valens, who, while of Mexican decent, did not actually speak Spanish and had to learn the song phonetically when he heard it while on a trip to Mexico.
