India, imagine songs of this caliber coming out every week, and you can visually see and hear the bands and music on MTV. That was the 1980s. Please let me go back to the 1980s!

@Derek A - EXACTLY. I was born in the 70’s, and was a child of the 80’s. And you’re right, songs of this caliber were being released, what seemed to be weekly.
For us 80’s kids, it was incredible. And at the same time, we took it for granted. We grew up with this being the norm, so we just naively assumed that’s how music will always be and sound.
Then rap music came along and literally ruined everything. Fuck rap, fuck Beyoncé, Rhianna, Bieber, Gaga, Katy Perry, Rhizzo, Adele. None of you are the caliber of our wonderful 80’s artist (and 70’s, and 60’s).

There are two common interpretations of this song.
    1. The first is, the woman used the guy to get out of a nowhere life and is now dropping him like a hot rock.
    2. The man thinks he owns the woman because he is responsible for her living a new and better life. Thus, he is stalking her and trying to dominate her and control her.
Personally, I think both interpretations are correct simultaneously. There are no heroes in this song, only villains.

That eighties sound...wow. Brings back memories; Spandau Ballet, OMD, etc...but this song made me think of the Information Society 'What's on your Mind' for that distinct sound. There was alot of experimentation with different sounds because of the advances in synthesizers and I think it fits plus it's a very 80's colorful video. Oh, and Spock contributes to the song with 'pure energy'.

I've always taken it that his career was on the slide when he met this girl. He saw she had star quality, used his experience to mentor and mould her and what influence he still had in the business to get her the breaks, then he basked in the reflected glory. He probably never gave a thought to what plans she had before they met and assumed she idolised him as much as he idolised himself. Now she's showing herself capable of going it alone and he is making the sort of desperate declarations that people who've become irrelevant make. He "loves her, can't be without her, can ruin her career", she'd "be nothing without" him, she owes him everything.
All of which is him not wanting to let go of the second hand glory he gets from being with her. Nothing to do with her as a person, just the world she gives him access to.
Then he gets the final kick in the teeth that she used him, sugar coated with the most unconvincing "I still love you" anyone could utter.
All he can do is repeat his argument. He has nothing new to say.

Having a relationship doesn't guarantee growth at the same rate or direction. She didn't use him but outgrew him and he couldn't accept it, prompting his response showing how unhealthy the relationship had become. Even though she still loved him she had to leave to continue her growth and ensure her safety.

If you can believe Wikipedia: Phillip Oakey was inspired by the film "A Star Is Born" and decided to turn the song into a conflicting duet with one of the band's two teenage female vocalists. Oakey is also at pains to point out another misconception: that it is not a love song, but "a nasty song about sexual power politics." ... Wow, I didn't realize that the two females in the band, Susan and Joanne, were only 17 and 18 when the song was recorded and released, because they look like they're in their early to mid-20s. Obviously, the song is fiction and they are playing parts in the music video, but if the lyrics were true regarding "now five years later on you've got the world at your feet" and "the five years we have had have been such good times" ... that would make Susan around 12 or 13 when she was a waitress in a cocktail bar when Phillip, then 21 and now 26, discovered her. :-)

It's interesting watching someone's first reaction to a song you've known for decades. I never got the murder/suicide vibe that you did from this song. Since he says "Don't forget it's me who put you where you are now, and I can put you back down too." I always felt he was saying "you are only successful/important because I made you that way and if you end our relationship I will take it all away". The woman would lose whatever status he claims to have given her and he would lose her.
I always saw the guy as trying to control her and her having outgrown him and their relationship. I feel like the whole song is that he's a spoiled rich guy having a temper tantrum("Don't you want me...I can't believe you won't see me...you better change your mind... you'll be sorry") and her reply is "Yeah I was a waitress but I was always gonna be something better. It's been fun, I still love you but I need to stand on my own now, for me. He just doesn't handle the rejection well.
I've seen other commenters have different interpretations so I'll just end it like one of my favorite RUclipsrs ends his posts. "It's just a thought.".

That's what I always thought as well. He saw her, made her a star, and then she got very popular and refused to see him anymore. She says she always knew she would become successful with or without him and she while she still loves him, it's time for her to be on her own. I always got manager/lover vibes. He's telling her that he can put her back as a cocktail waitress and take away all her success.

There's alot of stuff out there and I'm not going to do an exaustive search, but there's talk of the song being based on a girls picture-book (whatever that is), John Hinkley/Jodi Foster, A Star is Born, and Star 80.

I loved watching your shocked expressions as you listened to this song. This was a MASSIVE hit when it was released in the UK, and was guaranteed to fill the dancefloor whenever it was played. I don't think the lyrics are meant to imply murderous intent by the jilted male lover, more that he will find a way to make her sorry, perhaps by sabotaging her career, even if it costs him his own in the process.

  • @raymondmoore5476

I think it was a matter of "I can't live with out you" story. Sadly, there are nuts out there that have this " If I can't have you, no one will" outlook and he falls into that category. Sometimes people grow apart. IF she used him or not, that's for you to determine for yourself. I just don't think so. Did her fame go to her head? Maybe. At the core of it, I just think while she still loves him it is not the kind that say I want to be with you but I love you as a person, a dear friend and for all you done for me and that is just not enough for him. He NEEDS her to love him as he loves her, at least in his mind. Again, "if I can't have you, no one will" comes into mind as his outlook. This is all of course, just my opinion of what the song is saying.

The record spent a month at no.1 and opened the door to other fantastic bands like Human League. Check out OMD, Ultravox, Visage, Depeche mode and Yazoo to name but a few.
The lead singer of Tubeway Army was Gary Numan who went solo after the first hit and made many good records including " Cars " . He is still recording and touring to this day and you should definitely check him out.
