The song is about obsession of another person for fear of losing what they have been used to for 5 years. In 1980 there was a Playboy centerfold named Dorothy Stratton. When she tried to leave her husband/manager for director Peter Bogdanovich, her husband killed her and then himself. A movie was made called Star 80. This song was supposedly inspired by it.
In 1981 the story line was not the big deal at first, it was the mind blowing electronic music. This music was a huge dance hit and burned the radio airwaves.
I like how you're both really into the story this song tells. Exact same effect happened to me when I heard it new in the 80s. Just goes to show you why the song is memorable and timeless.
This song was HUGE back in the day. Human League have many good songs. Their biggest hit in the US was the song “Human” which was a number 1 hit in the US in ‘85 or ‘86, if I recall correctly. Great stuff!
Sound Of The Crowd, Open Your Heart, Love Action, Darkness & Seconds are all Banger's from this Same album (DARE). The Human League were masters of Early 80's Synth pop.
Another great 80s classic! You would also like Fascination by this group. And please also react to Hold Me Now by the Thompson Twins, you won't regret it!
Proof that some people just don't LISTEN to the lyrics of songs. Back in the day, our Wedding band had many, many, many, MANY requests for this song to be played as the "couples" song at their wedding. The first time, we were like...WHAT? We then realized, some folks aren't so much into paying attention.
the group are from sheffield england and were an all male group that split and phil oakly the lead singer saw the two girls dancing in a disco asked them if they could sing.they joined the group.they were still teenagers when they recorded this.they were backing singers till this song.then it was like a toss of a coin to see which would take the lead. phil oakly got the idea for the song from a photo story in a girls magazine.based the video loosely on the star is born film(probably the barbra streisand, kris kristofferson version there have been 4)famous man finds girl with talent, helps make her famous, she leaves him. when he says we'll both be sorry i think he means he'll be brokenhearted and sorry he said things like i made you famous in the heat of the moment to get her to stay.and she'll be sorry cause she won't find anyone that loves her like him and if her career stumbles he won't be there to help. she was in love with him for 5 years but shes grown and isn't the same person and needs to leave him to continue her journey.she loves him but isn't in love with him. that's how i see it.
Human League were my first new wave group, "Fascination," but also "Human," which was a huge hit.. Two great reactions. I've loved Rock/Metal, and New Wave/Modern, since I was a kid.
One of the best synth-pop songs of the early 80s. Always thought that main keyboard line sounded a bit ominous - like setting you up for the drama that was unfolding in the story. Plus, the fact that you hear both sides of the male/female debate but never hear the outcome - leaving it up to the listener to make up their own mind is really cool; they should've done a sequel song! Two other amazing songs by the Human League are the ballad "Human" (another he said/she said type vibe) and my personal favorite "Keep Feeling Fascination" which was a dance club burner in the 80s.
Human League biggest hits”Fascination” and”HUMAN”they came to America and got with two of the biggest music producers in the world Jimmy Jam & Terry Louis for the second one
Also... THANK YOU for reading my request for this song 🙂 top of the UK charts for weeks back in the day. Mum used to play this song all the time on her VHS recordings of top of the pops etc whilst little me sat there absorbed.
Should listen to part 2 of this song "Louise",ruclips.net/video/ehJj3FsFh_g/видео.html&start_radio=1 Oakey points out that the story is actually about the original protagonists from "Don’t You Want Me" meeting up 4 years later. In "Louise" the man sees his lost love again and still cannot deal with reality. The anger that drove the earlier song has dissipated, and is replaced with a hopeful fantasy that his ex-lover is drawn to him all over again. So Louise is really about self-deception, delusion and eternal sadness. Oakey says about "Louise" in interview It's about men thinking they can manipulate women when they can't, even conning themselves that they have when they haven't.
Sometimes its better not to know too much about the lyrics. Its a fairly psycho-relationship controlling/enabling song lol. Notice the girl kind of zombie like eventually sings "Dont you want me baby" with a blank stare, broken down. We just thought of it at the time as a cool vibe song about two lovers struttin their feathers at each other. The girl blowing the guy off and the guy chasin the girl. Didnt really go any deeper than that. I still keep it like that. Makes it more fun.
Great reaction / no one should stay with someone if they’re not feeling it. Was a massive hit in the UK - circa 82. Similar split up song is - say hello wave goodbye by soft cell.
Its from a Swiffer commercial 😁 Ya'lls reactions are so good ☺ Tye Human League have a lot of good songs. In the 80s they were in heavy rotation on New Wave radio stations
Glad y'all are checking out some New Wave music. Psychedelic Furs- Love my Way is another great song to listen to. Oh and don't you want me was on a chips ahoy commercial
Yes, I'm only human, and Fascination are both great hits! Love how you youngins are listening/ reacting to these 80's songs that l grew up listening to. Keep loving the 80's guys!!!😁
This is currently playing in the gym as a new remix. Not a cover tho, just remixed so it's still great! 😎👌And all I could think was damn. 41 years old and still an absolute banger. Gotta respect it. What's fascinating about this group is they can't really 'sing' they basically say the words but love their voices regardless and it works do well.
Now, what would happen if the song focused more on the "working as a waitress in a cocktail bar" aspect of the song... A little something to listen to (doesn't need reacting to, just something to giggle to): ruclips.net/video/_74N7KJmEj4/видео.html
Listen to the extended remix and you'll have an idea of the cool layering of the synth parts. Brilliant stuff. No wonder it went world wide and got awards.
Clicked so fast when I saw Human League. Gotta react to Human. Love that you watch the original videos when reacting. Especially for 80’s music. They are such a big part of the songs!
I ripped the Human League DVD and uploaded the first RUclips version of this video, before copyright or monetizing was a thing. The file size limit on RUclips was 99mb at the time. EMI (the record company) sent me a message, asking how I got the quality of the video so good with that size limit???? The answer was @10 hours of working on it with "Cleaner" in Final Cut. The vid is still up, with their ads, on my "Murphicus" channel.
Their first argument spun me out. When the announcement for the upcoming episode was made, I guessed that the missus condemned Will's act, and that the hubby endorsed it. Just an inkling, no more. Then, lo, it was the other way around!
Happens all the time just like in Hollywood Two average people one makes it to the top then good bye to the other person. Love doesn’t always have to work out
Love this song so much. Brings back such amazing memories. All the tracks you guys are doing bring back so many great memories. I dig your banter alot when you're both into the meaning of the song like this. Love your channel!
A fantastic early 80's band that would be fantastic to see a reaction too would be Adam and the Ants especially Prince Charming or Kings of the Wild Frontier by them, you won't regret it.
BUT what if things weren't exactly like what the male lyrics say? Maybe he just thinks he's the one responsible for whatever success she has. That doesn't mean he really was. Anyway, that's how I've always taken this song. Like she's breaking out from under his control.
Classic 80's song, when synthesizers and digital drums were really getting going in the mainstream; oh how I loved this song! And I always saw both of their sides😀; he does sound creepy though, as if he is entitled to her forever regardless of what she wants.
The question is, did he ever really care for the girl? if he is claiming her success wouldn't have happened without him and that he threatened to take her down if she didn't stay with him, that sounds more like he views them more like a transactional relationship--while she saw it as romantic given that she she admits she still loves him. sounds like she grew up and he didn't.
There are two sides to this story. 1. She has used him to get where she is and is now dumping him and he can't handle it. 2. He's a control freak and she is trying to let him down easy and he's threatening her.
RECKLEZZ READ THIS COMMENT: Ok, so now that I have your attention, I get the sense that you really like songs of EMPOWERMENT. I do too, so I've got a few suggestions that I'm sure you'll love. Check out "So What" by Pink, "Irreplaceable" by Beyonce, "I Can Still Make Cheyenne" by George Strait, "I'm Gonna Miss Her" by Brad Paisley, "When It Rains It Pours" by Luke Combs. Please like this comment to let me know you saw it.
*_Neither of the two_* noticed that after Joanne makes her spoken-word cheating confession to Philip, you can distinctly hear Joanne's voice singing with Philip during the chorus, before that you only heard Philip's voice during the chorus.
This is can be a controversial song for sure… I have very strong feelings towards this song and Police song Every Breath You Take …. Can’t wait to see how you two decipher this one that’s for sure
This Classic Is A MUST SEE/HEAR,, Great Song With An Amazing Video & There Was Nothing Like It At The Time,,Herbie Hancock "Rockit" (Official Music Video A MUST!!)
Omg!! I haven't heard this in years! Used to play that all the time! lol He's acting like she owes him still!!! If she was only in it to step up...she wouldn't have stuck with him for 5 years! Sounds like he was controlling & she needed to step back! Prove to herself she could do it without him!
In a way - we see this happening right now with celebrities. Alot of celebs came up that way and things was wild after that. When someone went their own way and left the other . its crazy though
The song is about obsession of another person for fear of losing what they have been used to for 5 years. In 1980 there was a Playboy centerfold named Dorothy Stratton. U will like this song especially since u love the 80s but react to their song "Human". Love ur guys reactions, keep killing it
Still love this song. So many memories of being young and free.
I like how you're both really into the story this song tells. Exact same effect happened to me when I heard it new in the 80s. Just goes to show you why the song is memorable and timeless.
We were still jamming to this at Jr high dances in 1984 lol
Knowing the song, I can already imagine the argument lol. A huge 80s classic for sure, and another great choice - peace and love y'all! ☮
This song was HUGE back in the day. Human League have many good songs. Their biggest hit in the US was the song “Human” which was a number 1 hit in the US in ‘85 or ‘86, if I recall correctly. Great stuff!
Minneapolis’ music producers (and Janet Jackson collaborators) Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis produced “Human” for them👍🏽
Don't you want me got to number one for 3 weeks in the USA selling one million copies. 🥳

Being boiled was their best song by far and years ahead of its time.
Amen - I love that song. Experimental, groundbreaking - *years* ahead of its time.
This was early MTV to the bone.
Mirror Man is another great song by them. Fascination too.
Sometimes its better not to know too much about the lyrics. Its a fairly psycho-relationship controlling/enabling song lol. Notice the girl kind of zombie like eventually sings "Dont you want me baby" with a blank stare, broken down.

Another great 80's hit.... True by Spandau Ballet!!!
The Human Leauge they are excellent. Try their song (Keep Feeling) Facination that's my favorite of theirs.
Thinking of other songs from this era that have a synth intro, check out 'Bette Davis Eyes' by Kim Carnes.
Now, what would happen if the song focused more on the "working as a waitress in a cocktail bar" aspect of the song...

A MUST HEAR Classic Human League "Human"
Their first argument spun me out. When the announcement for the upcoming episode was made, I guessed that the missus condemned Will's act, and that the hubby endorsed it. Just an inkling, no more. Then, lo, it was the other way around!
"The most Vicious love song ever made" :Phil Oakey...The Human League:
Keep Feeling Fascination is another great song from Human League.
Massive 80's song in the UK

One of my favourite 80’s songs. Great reaction 👍

Yes, absolutely!

Back in the day this music video was cool but today it be like WTF 😂
Would love to see yall react to a song called Voices Carry by a band called Till Tuesday. A great 80's classic.
Definitely check out their song "Human", it's a great song.

Secret Garden- Quincy Jones
A love your own- Average White Band
This had a similar theme to gotye’s song that came out 30 years later.
This group, in 2023, still sang this song 100% purely - the lead singer nvr lip-synced this hit.
the human league/ fascination😉
Great reaction-Making those puppy eyes. That’s enough reason to leave his ass!
I don’t owe you nothing!
Nobody done nothing .. it's a song not a Columbo movie you need to freeze frame every 10 secs and crack the mystery, pair of lemons

The year's of synthesisers.
A great band, read up how they started. Very interesting story.
Especially the 2 girls.
THE HUMAN LEAGUE-HEART LIKE A WHEEL.
I could see how the lyrics could be creepy nowadays.. but I also like how they share her side of the story too.
Seems like that's missing nowadays.

It's almost an obsession song on his end. He is telling her I made you& I can break you if you don't come back to me. Kinda creepy?
