  • Students who enjoy hook kicking often practice them as an attack or as a 'poised' pick off. For these two drills, we work on using a hook kick while retreating. This just adds an advanced element to the kick.
While hook kicks are not the most practical kick, they are a great challenge, an enjoyable challenge, develop flexibility, core strength and a better understanding of counter-balance etc.

I love all your tutorial, they are of high standard, I'am from India and I'am a karateka too I wish to come to UK and train with guys some day in the future, thanks and keep up the good work . One more thing I wish if you can organise a world karatedo run and stun the Tkd guys ! , now as ktd is going to become an Olympic sport we should organise a karatedo fitness run of minimum 2 km and help promote karatedo as a great self defense system and sport better than any other combat sport on earth , it also helps women to stay fit and it is the best self defense system for them too, so if we involve a lot of woman in world karatedo run for fitness doing punchess and kicks in the middle of the run it shall catch like wild fire all over the world and it will definitely push Tkd to second place than karatedo, also more people shall watch Karatedo matches than Tkd in the Olympic games thank you .

For the first drill, what value is there in doing a hook kick versus a side kick?

    • @scottrybski7072

A hook kick comes in brilliantly for tournament training. For instance, lets say you're facing an opponent and they are moving either clock wise or counter clock wise from you. You could do a hook kick counter the direction they are moving in an catch them IF you time it correctly. Side kicks are also very good to use but again IF you time it correctly. Lets say you're fighting someone who is apt to use their hands more than their feet you could set them but taking jabs towards their head and when they back up you could close the gap and do a quick side kick.Last but not least, learn to combine a side kick with a hook kick follow-up. Hope this long winded answer helps.

Scott Rybski It sounds like you're saying it's a good way to intercept lateral movement. Is it not feasible to attempt a side kick in a similar situation, but aiming for where the head ought to be? I recognize that that is probably the path of more resistance, though, when a hook kick does that work for you.
In my own tournament experience (tkd), I never even thought of doing side kick or hook kick to the head, preferring instead to do round house kicks or spin hooks or spin backs. Is there not a lot of contemplation of those kicks for head shots?

To me, the biggest advantage of the hook kick is that it comes from a weird/opposite angle. I don't do them a lot myself, but I tend to get hit by them, simply because they connect with the "wrong" side of the head. It pulls up similarly to a side or a roundhouse kick, but aims at the other side of the head and gets around the guard. It can be difficult to deflect it if you're not used to recognizing it quickly.

Jimmy Hellfire Interesting. So you're playing into the expectation from your opponent that only one side of the head is vulnerable. That makes a lot of sense.

if you deflect the side kick with your arm, a hook kick is a great way to counterattack as you go inside. you need to develop speed in execution first to do it properly.

There's no power kicking to the head, when you're moving backwards. It's also too easy to see. The argument will be... "He's not moving back when he kicks because he stopped" but there is still too much energy moving backwards.

You are 100% correct. But in sport karate, this technique is rewarded with 3 times as many points are a straight (forward moving) punch to the nose... sadly

    • @GKRKarate
      @GKRKarate  7 лет назад

Correct. This is SPORT karate training. Not the regular (traditional) training these students do during the week.

Hi Peter, the push-pull principle occurs more in the rotation of the torso and arms. If we use it in our hips -- for example, we pull our forward hip back (pull) and 'push' the back hip forward, it will send the weight in the wrong direction.
There are two forces at play. 1) Forward thrust of the body weight (by ensuring the hips aren't pulling away) 2) Rotation thrust (torque of the torso).

warrior a What a stupid comment you make, nowadays karatedo is both martial art and sport. A karateka in sports will spar according to the rules but a karateka in real fight for defense will not only defend himself first but will get shit out of any body, a hard practitioner will finish a fight with one good blow , but the thing is only fools fight ! , wise men avoid fights and practice karatedo for fitness and art, hope you understand .

PONNA RAJASHEKHAR for fitnees there is aerobics dance yoga. But karate not for fitness its for death or life hope u understood

warrior a Are you crazy !nowadays all martial art people learn are basically for fitness and self defense and sport all three combined together. Purpose of martial art is self defense first but in modern times martial art has become a craze for fitness for the tough people and for soft people yoga, aerobics etc is ok , hope you got my point .

For real effective self defence go to Kyokushin.
    This is unrealistic nonsense.

Evaristo Blazquez This video has nothing to do with realistic self defence. This is about a certain type of karate tournament style.
