  • As karate-ka spend time blocking in Kihon, they often develop bad habits for blocking in kumite (and combat). This drill reinforces the importance of a quality guard and the need to keep it, instead of blocking... when faced with an attacker who comes in with a myriad of strikes

This is exactly the lesson I needed to see today! Kept getting punched in the face in kumite in class because I was dropping my hands after blocking.

    It's almost similar to a boxer's guard.

@@GKRKarate I believe we can not also leave the characteristic of karate, after all and the blocks we train?

@@mendonca8030 I am sorry but you do not get to decide what karate is, and is not. But everyone is welcome to their opinion. It seems you are passionate about karate, that is great. Keep training hard and be well

@@GKRKarate I just believe that we should not mischaracterize karate, when you incorporate boxing movements into karate, it is no longer karate and that happens with any martial art. Have you seen any boxers training karate to improve their boxing ??? But I understand you, because you are from a sporting line of karate.

@@mendonca8030 You are welcome to believe that. Chosen Miyagi (a forefather of karate and founder of Goju) said that karate MUST evolve with the times. It should not be stuck in the past. Bringing a higher hand up (in guard) makes total sense. And it still sticks with the principles of karate. Karate is principles, NOT techniques

Karate can not really be hit, otherwise it is disqualified. Consequently these movements and this time are NOT to hit but to pretend to hit. In a truly realistic, self-defense or even MMA combat, movements and timing MUST ALWAYS be related to the real effectiveness of the technique. These 2 young men, in a real fight, would go to the hospital after a few tens of seconds. Karate of this type is good for fun, for playing, for health, etc. To really fight, you need very little.
