  • There are two things a karate-ka must have for combat.
    1. The ability to land a powerful strike accompanied by the ability to then retreat to a safe distance. In the UFC this year (2016) we have seen two challengers upset the current champions with this tactic. Connor MacGreggor upset Aldo by throwing a pick off reverse punch and then retreating to safety. Additionally, Holly Holm upset Ronda Rousey by repeatedly using this tactic.
    2. The ability to retreat, but then strike if needed. When we move away, an attacker will likely follow us. This means we need to be able to change direction and continue our escape. Or, we need to be able to turn escape into attack and throw a strike.... which means sending our retreating weight back in again.
This drill focuses on both of these tactics.
