What is Jacob Obrecht (1457 - 1505) evoking in “Rompeltier”, a song in Flemish dialect whose lyrics at first glance seem quite obscure? As “Rumfel” means “to knock” (at the door) or “to knock quickly”, it's possible that the protagonist is simply asking her lover to enter her house via a particular door, because “[her] husband is with [her]” (mi man diest iesteimet)!
We perform it here on high instruments in one of the most widespread instrumental forms at the dawn of the Renaissance, combining shamws, sackbut and percussion.
