Virgin Media is actually good since they are the ONLY major consumer ISP in the UK selling internet speeds of 100 Mbps or higher and have been doing 100 Mbps speeds since at least 2012 which is the only reason I have Virgin Media broadband (the main reason why they have such a high speed and most ISPs here don't is because most ISPs share the same network cabling from a company called Openreach which is owned by the largest broadband provider in the UK called BT and BT don't give a crap about broadband speeds). I have had 200 Mbps+ since 2015 on Virgin Media and before I had 100 Mbps since 2012 and when we joined Virgin Media we had 60 Mbps back in 2010 which most ISPs here sell as their highest speeds or close to the highest speeds
Zahid Shabir - Virgin media do offer fast connections (for download, not upload) but that doesn't mean that their hubs are any good. They overheat and their Wi-Fi is terrible.
@@zahidshabir4038 That's starting to change; thankfully. There are a number of AltNet carriers springing up across the country who are using XGSPON, meaning subscribers can get theoretical connection rates of up to 10Gigabits (with current technologies). Sure, you can get any speed you like if you have long enough arms and deep enough pockets to pay for a dedicated fibre. The PON standards are moving all the time though with 25G and 50G PON technologies on the horizon. I'm with an AltNet carrier, admittedly on openreach infrastructure and can get a 1Gigabit bi-directionally; not that I want to pay nearly £300 a month for it...a 900/100 Connection is more than enough for my needs. The AltNets and Virgin media have been leaving openreach and BT in the dust for years, though they are working to close that gap. Residential Gateways provided by nearly all ISPs are a weak point; as internet speeds go up, the weakness of the RG gets all the more apparent, especially if you're a power user. For that reason, I haven't used an ISP provided RG for years and have been running pfSense for most of that time. That too is starting to change. I work for one of the access network vendors, and customers are realising the common-or-garden Residential Gateways are not up to the task of delivering on subscriber expectations; the majority of people believe ISPs are selling WiFi rather than broadband and they get more support calls relating to WiFi than anything else. The average subscriber wants to plonk a box in the living room window that just works, get support when the WiFi doesn't work, up to gigabit speeds, fast WiFi that's approaching line rate and they want it to cover the whole house...without dropping four-figures on pro-grade kit. Providers are waking up to that reality. I very much doubt ISP provided RGs will ever match the performance and features of pro-grade kit (ISPs pay very little for them), but that gap will close a little in time.

I too have UniFi, I dropped about a grand on it and have 4 APs and 3 switches. The outside patio Internet was the game-changer last year. But I have the mini Gateway. I was cautious about noise, your results so far imply I could safely upgrade to the grown up router and 24 port switch. I’m currently getting 360 mbps on my gig-e VM connection, so I am guessing VM need to work some magic their end when prompted by me. Tedious admin. There’s never a convenient time. Oh, and I nearly forgot to say, I really appreciate your videos, thanks so much! 👍👍
You're only getting 360Mbps on Gig1? Is that over Wi-Fi or when connected with a wire? If that's wired then you should deffo give VM a call. Unless you have features turned on your mini gateway which are lowering your throughput.
When I moved house I had a rewire and had the entire house networked with Unify. I only have one AP-Lite at the front of the house, but it reaches all the way to the back of the garden! Also have a USG. best thing I ever did as virgins router kept rebooting !
Wow, that UDM and switch looks really really clean with those spacers between. I'd like to play around with a UDM at some point, the most I've been able to play with at the moment is the cloud keys. Good work!
I'm in the middle of doing something similar to this, but I'm building a full-depth 24u rack into a cavity above a staircase, and venting air outside. It's been a lot more planning than I was expecting, especially with all the SFP runs.
Nice work on the setup. Take a look at Phillips Hue or another smart light setup and have a light strip at the back of your rack to glow the colour that best shows the temperature of the rack. I did it for mine and it looks bloody amazing if i do say so myself. Glass Fronts are usually better as most cold air comes from the floor (where the air is coolest), Network equipment usually is cooled east to west (side to side) not front to back.
The only potential upgrade I'd recommend would be the new Wifi 6 LR AP. I just got mine and it's stupid how fast and powerful it is. I have the standard dream machine and a pair of the QNAP QSW-M408-4C 10GbE Managed Switches (The 10 gig unifi switches are just too expensive for what they are) I tried disabling the UDM's built in Nano HD AP and sent all 60~something odd devices to connect to the 6LR AP and it didn't even break a sweat. I was streaming 4k netflix content on 8 different devices and it's like... it just didn't care. My only real gripe with that new AP is that it's still limited to a 1gig uplink despite a couple devices being capable of moving data wirelessly at faster rates than that. One tip though is that you may actually prefer the more straight forward design of the old user interface. You can switch to it by going to Settings - System Settings and then toggling the "New User Interface" option off. It's not as pretty but it seems like you get more info and stuff is more intuitively laid out.
Imagine the reason why the switches aren't very loud is that you're not using all the PoE ports to drive gear yet. The 48 port switches at work are all pretty loud in our wiring closets, since pretty much every port is also powering a VoIP phone or WiFi AP!
This is a great series to land right now as I'm about to do exactly the same Unifi network upgrades in my house! Looking forward to seeing how you put it all together.
The console and switch CPU reading difference is just down to the console taking snapshot reads. You can adjust the frequency it does this from daily down to every 5 minutes. I run a network at work with over 60 Ubiquity APs and i'm gradually migrating the site over to ubiquity switches which will be a mix of optical US-16-XG's and USW-Pro-24's and US-48-500W units. The Pro-24's are non POE but are totally silent which I need for putting into sound recording spaces.
Really like those cables. They seem much nicer than any other cables I've used before. As always, excellent presentation. Keep it up. I look forward to seeing the next video. I like networking.
I got an immaculate used prism 18U rack on gumtree for £50 (£400 new) and it filled up surprisingly fast. Keep an eye out for bargains on used racks because I can you promise that 12U won't last you long.
I'm tempted to go Ubiquity too. Kid's had to bring Chromebooks home for remote learning this year, and my Netgear router has been taking a beating with those added to everything else. My house is small enough that a single router can cover it all wirelessly, but the interference from all the devices & system overhead really gives it hell. Would be nice to have hardware driving it all with room to grow. Seeing your setup in action really helps - a nice blend between consumer/prosumer grade and full business class. I saw Linus' home setup a while back & it seems almost too industrial.
7:15 When you connect to the dashboard the CPU does extra processing, that's why it goes up? Check for firmware updates, high cpu utilisation in new router models is common and gets fixed in later patches. At least that's happened to me a few times over the years.
2:13 There is actually a middle ground between a vanity table and breaking down and buying a rack: the IKEA LACK table. It's almost the exact width of a standard rackmount. It's $10, in the US at least.
Great video! I used to work doing SysAdmin/NetAdmin a number of Fortune 500 companies over the years, but I am retired due to disability, so I fiddle with the IOT level stuff, like flashing DD-WRT (and other similar software loads) and the like into routers and making microservers out of Raspberry Pi 4 Bs. But I went and looked at the Ubiquiti Canadian store, and I find the prices quite reasonable for getting enterprise quality equipment. It would be nice to have some setup and then forget it (except the monitoring, of course) enterprise-level infrastructure that didn't need babying any time the load goes up. Thanks for the info!
this is a great setup, i've been a ubiquiti fan for several years now so it's nice to see them really step up with their offerings. not to mention they look soooo damn sexy.
Setup different vans for your personal devices, IOT and guest network, keep devices like ring doorbells etc.. on different networks to your pc. You can set access rights to content, vpns etc...clients can use on different vlans.
with Virgin gig1 you can get past the 1gb port limit if you connect it to a switch or router that supports balance-rr , it lets you team the ports i've done it and get the full 1.14gb supplied to my house
@@TastyPC no you can have it in Modem mode like i have using Balance-RR as the protocol will effectively team all 4 of the 1Gb ports to let you get past the limit, look on the virgin media community forums a lot of people have done it
Hey Lauren! Good to see you're still uploading! You and I have similar Ubiquiti setups with the UDMP, but I went for the US-Aggregation Switch instead of the UI POE switch. The Agg switch allows for 10gbe while not costing all that much. It's only 8 ports, but they're cheap enough that I bought two: One for my desk, and another for the server rack. Using Fiber cables between the two has been a snap. I managed to wait and snag the US6 wifi as well (with a generic POE). So far, the UDMP was silent before I added a hard drive for video recording. Even without a camera on the network, the fan noise was audible. With the G3-Instant, the Protect software seems pretty straightforward. Try to get a UI cam and play with Protect a bit. Overall, the UI system is imperfect, but I'm still learning about it, too. You may want to sign up for the Early Access program to see if you can get some of the unreleased gear to review for the channel! Hope your health is good!
Hey Jeremiah, I have been considering the 10G Aggregation Switch, but thought that as it’s marketed towards aggregating multiple switches, they probably have a more conventional 10GbE switch in the works. I do have a few UniFi Protect cameras to set up, although I plan to go with an SSD in my UDM-Pro as I don’t require more than a couple of days of recordings. I’ve signed up for the EA program and check there occasionally. My health has been pretty good, thanks. :)
You should also add in your own VPN (not a VPN service/they're borderline scams). This is easily done with something as small as a Raspberry Pi or any other single board computer of your choice.
She's beautiful and her voice is soothing. I don't need anything else in my YT feed. Oh yeah, that's a lot of money on a pro network setup. Although I'm not a fan of registering my network devices on the cloud.
Sweet setup. Im a Ubiquti certified installer. Have done maybe 600 AP's all over the world. UniFis are great, i have 1 at home and they cover 300ft radius, so 600ft. Thats enough for a 4bed home and cover the garden as well. The switch will be noisy, especially in the summer as the fans will ramp up until they are screaming. Not for home use unfortunately. Can you mount all comms into the Garage ?. That would be the answer. Re Router, yes just put it in Modem Mode, thats how i have it.

Having network switches in my bedroom would drive me crazy with all of those blinking light at night. They look cool though!
I saw it uploaded earlier and saw it was private, and I about cried😂😂❤
Imagine the reason why the switches aren't very loud is that you're not using all the PoE ports to drive gear yet. The 48 port switches at work are all pretty loud in our wiring closets, since pretty much every port is also powering a VoIP phone or WiFi AP!
The PoE switch that I'm using is fanless. :)
@@TastyPC Nice!
those touch screens tho!!!!!
Missed you. Glad you are back. Good work, as always.
Since you bought a FlexHD, that would work way better than the nanoHD for your bedroom, since the Flex is designed for table-top scenarios.
I'm going to wall mount the NanoHD :)
Looking great! Cant wait to see the next stages :)
Nice content, can’t wait to see Vlan firewall and more context about the UniFi hardware
the enterprise is a neat touch. even better would the liberator. !!!
Great Video, and someone who pronounces Router correctly 🙂
Why does this channel have so few subs and likes? The content and presenter is amazing
I saw Linus' home setup a while back & it seems almost too industrial.
please make video on Cyberpunk after patches and bugfixes. more game review + benchmark + game setting optimizations videos aswell. thanks
Wow, she is back ❤ I hope she wouldn't disappear again after RTX 4090 review in the future ❤
TastyPC slowly creeping into homelab content makes me smile
That's... what's shown in the video... 🤨
@@TastyPC really sorry I was interrupted and missed that part of your video. its a great video and love the content you put out.
with Virgin gig1 you can get past the 1gb port limit if you connect it to a switch or router that supports balance-rr , it lets you team the ports i've done it and get the full 1.14gb supplied to my house
In modem mode the Hub 4 only outputs through a single 1Gb port. Having it in router mode is too big of a compromise.
Clearly you read my mind, been thinking about what I need/need to do to move to Ubiquiti, I’ll be watching this series with glee!
You should also add in your own VPN (not a VPN service/they're borderline scams). This is easily done with something as small as a Raspberry Pi or any other single board computer of your choice.
Nice to see you back again. And good vid.👍
Hehe, I did exactly the same. Including the pretty cables. It's a shame really my setup is cramped up in the corner of a dark utility room.
She's beautiful and her voice is soothing. I don't need anything else in my YT feed.
Oh yeah, that's a lot of money on a pro network setup.
Although I'm not a fan of registering my network devices on the cloud.
Great video. Thank god there's no aweful music like some other channels.
If you have any questions re config, just hit me up. Im on twitter and insta too. Same name.
The switch I used has no fans as it's passively cooled. My room has hit 30°C and I'm yet to hear the UDM-Pro. So far so good. :)
Nice enterprise 👍
Just upgraded my house network to 10gigabit 😁 got Netgear MS510TXM switches 👍✨💥
love those little displays, but can't beat 1250 MB/sec with those ...
You could get a Vertical Wall Mount Server Rack, that is what I did for my UniFi Gear.
