Deathloop is here and I feel like I'm in a time loop watching my boyfriend play games about time loops. We actually enjoyed Deathloop, but IGN gave it a 10, and we're gamers. So, in this video we're gonna disagree and poop our diapers.

Hey guys! We wanted to apologize for the mispronunciation joke we made about Dinga Bakaba. We purposely mispronounce all kinds of stuff on this channel as a running gag, usually to poke fun at my own ignorance about the gaming industry and it’s many many words to remember. Thanks for helping us understand why it didn’t work this time because the last thing we’d ever want to do is make anyone feel unwelcome here. Love you bye!
Most of us got the joke. People are just looking for a reason to be offended. Keep on creating GR.
Yup. Offence is not given, its taken. People should grow thicker skin, comedy is meant to be the great leveler to all people and thats why I watch this channel because Matt and Shelby have a great sense of humour. So I take offence to people taking offence to an innocuous joke and feel they owe them an apology instead.
@@andreymagnuss I don't understand why (some (for the nitpickers in here)) white people still think it's funny to mispronounce names that aren't as common in the western world as a joke when they already do it casually.
Edit: I do appreciate their apology and don't want to cancel them or think they're racist, I just found it to be insensitive and am glad those that share my opionion, although a minority in this comment section, were also heard by GFR.
Don't listen to these resetera types. Resetera is a vile forum filled with racists and misogynistic man children. They are purely performative in their social justice.

Yes I can

Yeah the kick is super OP, also the game is pretty much just another prey and dishonoured if you're into those games

Seeing Arkane get perfect 10s for Deathloop is like seeing DiCaprio get an Oscar for the Revenant. They deserved it for their previous, better works, but I'll take this.
That’s honestly the best way I’ve heard it put. Yeah, but that Deathloop song goes hard.
I agree 100%. Exactly that. Like seriously, Dishonored is a masterpiece of the game - maybe the best I have ever played. And Prey is also pretty amazing.
That is actually a great analogy. I concur. 😏
Well. The storytelling in this game is a master piece.
Idk about that, maybe, maybe, maybe Prey but this is definitely Arkane's most technically advanced work yet and they definitely deserve praise for it. Dishonored was amazing for its time but still incredibly flawed, Dishonored 2 simply didn't rise to the occasion of the first and carried a lot of the same mistakes though it is still a strong title.

I had a suspicion that if you played as a white male protagonist, it would have gotten 6/10 reviews.
I get the desire for more diverse protagonists in video games, but if reviewers keep handing out fake review scores like this, it will end up having the opposite effect.

Aw man! That "there won't be any fireworks" after that set up with Mabel was funny! Hahahahahaha! XD
I was hopeful you’d talk about how **GREAT** the voice acting is in this. I absolutely love Colt and Julianna’s banter and how much they get under each other’s skin, and the delivery of Colt’s lines especially. I sat there for 2 minutes listening to him guess a password at a door while he just said words like “galvanize” and “spittoon” (he really likes that word). They’re probably my favorite part of the whole game.
I agree that I wish they gave us a little bit more freedom in discovering the perfect loop ourselves but I think they also realized that 90% of us are idiots that would never figure it out, go right to RUclips instead, and then just do the perfect loop and not experience any of the game. Maybe they could have randomized it to each copy like they did with the codes so you can’t just copy a code from the internet for a safe in your game.
I also think it would be smart if they allowed Julianna to invade at any point in time in any Colt player’s game, instead of only the first part of the day. That would make for a much more exciting and nerve-wracking experience knowing she could show up at any point and blow that perfect loop. At least, make it a setting. That way they wouldn’t have to search for a player about to start the morning segment and can just plug you into the next available player that’s beginning any section at any time of the day, and would dramatically increase the speed of getting into a game. But I’m a big fan of her as a player mechanic and have had some good players really wreck my shit, haha.
Best part of the game is Colt singing to himself about being an electric man lol
I know I'm one year late on this, but a human controlled Julianna invasion can happen within the first two minutes of starting any map that has one or more Visionaries in it, not just the morning. And it's been that way since launch. It can throw an AI controlled Julianna in at any time in a map with a Visionary.
There are like over a dozen words for the rocket codes I think and you can tell Colt was having such a blast saying all these completely random words.
"You're not even the best drummer in the Beatles." It's true. I've sunk 13 hours into Deathloop, and while it's good... I reinstalled Prey a week ago, and that's where I've been spending most of my gaming hours. Deathloop is a solid 7 out of 10.
Prey is more of a masterpiece than Deathloop is. Again, this is my personal opinion. Deathloop is awesome, but I wouldn't call it a masterpiece either. Weakest Arkane Studio title in my opinion which isn't a bad thing.
My thoughts when seeing people play this. Cool idea but Id rather just replay Prey or any of the Dishonored games.
Yeah, if deathloop is a 10/10 then that makes Dishonored 2 and Prey a 11/10. It would also make RDR2 and BoTW a 20/10.
I played all three dishonored games after deathloop came out and before death loop came out so yeah deathloop isn’t the best but it’s fun
I don't really replay games but I spent around 35 hours when I played Prey and didn't even touch the dlc lol, amazing game
I appreciate the "Ringo's not even the best drummer in The Beatles" reference. Beautiful.
For those unaware: it was allegedly John Lennon's response when asked if Ringo Starr was the best drummer in the world.
Allegedly being the important part there. As you suggested, he did not actually say that. Also Ringo is considered one of the BEST rock drummers by his peers and most who followed. Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers said it best: "The most important thing a drummer can contribute to a song is the feel - and every Beatles song feels great"
Nobody disses Ringo on my watch! 😝
Yeah as far as I know it’s an old joke and there is no record any Beatles actually said it

Most gamers actually hate that as far as I know. But I love it lol. That's where most of the lore of the plot resides for every game ever.
I wonder how they’d react to the ones in actual bioshock. I’ve seen in the gaming community that this game has been an exception to the rule of gamers disliking audiology.
@@maxpiper4796 oh audiologs in bioshock? Well the environment is a little to intriguing and you don't get a lot of lore from playing the game, so people generally do love hearing those audiologs. But it's will prolly be like first 10 or something and then give up

Exactly. Even if Prey and Mooncrash are arguably Arkane's best games, it hardly matters if so many people will never ever play them.
Deathloop is Arkane goodness, made to appeal to more people. It's less daunting (off-putting), but still leaves loads of details for fans of the genre.

“Bioshock in the 60s” is pretty accurate lol
But Bioshock 1 and 2 both took place in the 1960s
I didn't really like how they just reduced it to "Bioshock in the 60s". It sounded like they were calling it derivative.
There are people at Arkane who have been working on immersive sims since the first SYSTEM Shock came out. These aren't people "just copying Bioshock"... they made the predecessor to Bioshock! They probably took some inspiration from Bioshock's evolutions yes but they've absolutely earned the right to do that.

I highly recommend turning off the objective markers. Makes you feel super big brain once you figure stuff out yourself. Personally, it's my second favorite game of the year.
You don't even have to turn them off in the settings. You can just not choose the missions in the menu, so they don't get tracked.
whats your first or third favorite? just curious I need more games to play haha
@@prod.kidmizu my GoTY is Returnal funny enough. Deathloop is my number 2 and Hunt:Showdown is my number 3. Though Hunt:Showdown didn't come out this year, I only started playing it this year. Great game. Initially, it was gonna be Resi 8, but Hunt is something special.
a masterpiece? maybe not. but it was such a good time to play through and as a big dishonoured fan it was great to be able to play a similar game without those pesky mana restrictions, that really frees up the gameplay for me. biggest negative for me would be the lack of interactions with your targets. we really should have had dialogue with them so we care a bit more because at some point they felt more like lootboxes than actual interesting characters. so for me in terms of numbers out of ten it would probably be a 8,7 really good but with some flaws.
Love it!!!! Excited for the behind the scenes video too
Exceptional editing! I don't comment much but I'm just so impressed. In my opinion, the best editing of any gaming channel on RUclips, period. Extremely impressive (plus the commentary is hilarious).
The moment when youtube plays a "deathloop" ad, after watching a video about a game about deathloops: "shit's getting real meta, now! 😵🙀
I really enjoyed the game more once I removed all the markers from the hud. Made the experience much better
That’s what Arkane does. They’re one of the best studios making these immersive sim games.
this is my new go to strat in most games, its a shame some games simply don't work without the markers
I kept trying to do that but I’d keep getting met with vague objective descriptions. Maybe I just don’t have the patience
Profile pic is muse 2nd law! A beautiful album artwork 😊
Good for you. But not only can you choose markers of which missions to follow in DEATHLOOP, you can also not choose any of them at all and either keep every bit in your head or write it down in notepad. Markers would only hand-hold you if you choose to be hand-held by them (assuming you realised the game has a non-linear structure, though with one main objective for you to complete). You can choose what missions to complete in any order you want. Markers serve the purpose of easier navigation through the level as they are essential at least at the beginning of the game because of the complexities of level-design, game-design and narrative structure.
I honestly love y'alls videos. They make 10 minutes of my day very happy. Thanks for that😁
I've got like 50 hours in. Haven't read many notes and have actively not even tried to solve the loop. I just like jumping in the game and killing everybody. It's the simple pleasures in life...
Seriously though, it's a great game. The multiplayer is really a fun cat and mouse affair. The world is detailed and immersive. There are plenty of minor puzzles you can solve for big brain moments. It's also fun just figuring out what exactly is going on there. The main quest is a little too hand holdy but that's OK.
Maybe it's not a masterpiece like a Zelda game or Red Dead Redemption but it is a masterful representation of what it is.
The Hand holding is only so far until you finish the Tutorial, afterwards its explore each Area in different Timezones, on top of coming back with new Information
I swear, your choice in clips from movies or tv shows to go with your reviews have become so good. They’ve always been a great part of your videos, to be honest.
Arkane deserves the success with Deathloop, they already created underappreciated cult-classics.
Seriously…and they give you all the freedom you want in the game. I didn’t mind the final loop path at all. I hope more developers use Arkane as a model for their FPS’
Dishonered 1 and Dishonored 2 are some of the best stealth games. Personally I love Dishonored 1.
Yeah, it's basically full action dishonored, It can't be bad by definition
@@buffkangaroodog what bad take, I agree with Dishonored being incredible though
@@buffkangaroodog Agreed. The amount of people I've seen say that Deathloop doesn't "look like a 10". I'm like, what does a 10 look like? Pretentious and cinematic with average at best gameplay like so many of these 10s out there? Deathloop is essentially an action oriented Dishonored which is perfect for me, who plays Dishonored like a supernatural John Wick. The gameplay loop was far better than any of the other 10s shown in the video. lol.
Welcome back!!! (crowd cheers) look forward to seeing your content.

From everything I've seen, this looks like the perfect game to get on a discount. Like the type of discount where I could say "Batman: Arkham City for $5? What a bargain!" but applied to Deathloop.
Seems like it's worth it to wait half a year while it drops to game pass.
If that's how you feel, then I highly suggest you have a look at dark messiah of might and magic, a genuinely amazing game (a bit dated, cause time lol) that's often discounted to $5 on steam. Made also by Arkane!

Fantastic video. "Bill Murray Fart Car" totally got me.
Half way through Deathloop I started to feel burnt out. So I decided to play through each area at each time of day to just explore. That was honestly when the game really clicked for me. Reminds me of Metroid Fusion in that way since they tell you where to go for much of the game only to give you a further expanded space to play. At some point you just want to play the game by your own rules and that totally works here.
How is that fantastic video then? If only for jokes, if you liked em. But jokes are also problematic because most of them are based on reviewer not understanding game's systems. The game can tell you what to do and where to go exactly if you let the game do it. Even if with markers turned on (for navigating in complicated and intricate levels first and foremost) the game doesn't handhold. It provides options for player to complete the main goal of the game any way player want to. Somehow people complain about linearity in non-linear games and vice versa.
I love this and I love you guys. Please do a review of the PlayStation showcase like you did last year. There was so much cool stuff

Play outer wilds! It has a similar idea of a loop that you have to solve a specific puzzle to beat, but it makes you feel like you actually have to figure it out and piece the puzzle together rather than giving you the solutions. Amazing game
Yes, and now is a realllllly good time to do it with the DLC just around the corner
Disappointed that there's one mandatory solution to the game. I was hoping it would be a world-sized, dishonored-style puzzle box
It honestly looks like a scaled down version of the original idea
Yet when they make something more freeform like Dishonored 2 you guys whine and dine about choice paralysis. Might as well make a looter shooter if your fans are like this.
That's a bit of an excessive generalization. The mandatory solution to the game requires several other configurations/sequences of the same pieces, to learn and set up the solution to the game. And it's loaded with side stuff for fans of the genre.

Thank you for another quality video! I really enjoyed watching this one
The setup and payoff off that batman clip is why you guys are so great
I think its funny how players will complain about a fixed narrative, and then when given the directors chair will realise they're crappy story tellers and wish for a fixed story again.
There's nothing bad about the overarching fixed story like in DEATHLOOP (I mean it was marketed as the game where you have to kill 8 targets), but I wish people acknowledged they don't have to follow objective markers the game gives them after the tutorial, and that they can create their own narratives through the tools this game provides. Funny how given options some players and unfortunately reviewers with huge audiences complain about game's linearity not having read through tutorial, as it seems.
As a huge Arkane fan, I'm really happy that their games are finally being recognized for the masterpieces they are, but...I agree with the video, Deathloop isn't their best game (that honor belongs to Prey and its Mooncrash expansion). There's only one way to take out all the visionaries and the game spells it out for you. I even turned off all the quest markers to increase my immersion in being able to piece it together myself but the game is still constantly handholding you through the leads. Prey: Mooncrash requires FAR more strategic planning and execution on how you're going to pull off the perfect "escape" and the game does not handhold at ALL. Deathloops' level design is also not as diverse as Dishonored. Once you play the 4 maps a handful of times, you've likely already found all the secrets. The "fun" comes in the invasion mechanic and exploiting your knowledge of the level design as Julianna to repeatedly kill Colt (which is something that they definitely nailed), but outside of that, the game's replayability abruptly hits a wall after some 20 hrs. In contrast, I played Dishonored 1/2/Death of the Outsider and Prey for 60+ hrs until I felt I had found and done everything.
I really like Deathloop and its overall concept + tone, but it's definitely not 10/10. 8/10 would be my rating, maybe 8.5 if it didn't randomly crash and freeze occasionally (yes even on PS5).
@@buffkangaroodog I love all the Dishonored games and have replayed them dozens of times, but Prey is their best game. Personal opinion.

Deathloop is amazing, I feel like this vid kinda skimmed over loads of things about the game that make it fun to play 😅
They literally skipped over everything about the game that makes it fun. But of course they did, you gotta do whats hot in the moment in order to get the views. And right now, it's cool to hate on Deathloop for some reason.
@@Nick-kb2jc Huh? Matt played the game live on Twitch. Throughout the whole playthrough he was having fun but also sometimes complained about the issues he had with the game (one of which being that, at one point, it messed up his computer and had to end stream).
He still tried as often as possible throughout the stream to let people know that he thought it was a really good game despite the story not being for him because of the way it was delivered. By the end though, he was very disappointed, hence the tone of this review, so this video pretty much reflects his actual thoughts about the game and it's not because "it's cool to hate on Deathloop".
@@stephanewd I don’t care what he did on Twitch. I’m talking about this review video. Did you watch it? They were bashing the game for like 8 minutes straight
@@Nick-kb2jc "By the end though, he was very disappointed, hence the tone of this review, so this video pretty much reflects his actual thoughts about the game". And, yes, they do mention in the video that they enjoyed the game and think it's good, just not a 10/10 for them personally.
@@stephanewd That’s fair. I don’t personally think Deathloop is a 10/10 either but it is a fantastic game that deserves more praise. If Deathloop isn’t a 10/10 though, then I don’t know how in the world BoTW and RDR2 are, especially RDR2. I will never understand how that game got a 10/10 score. It’s the most formulaic and generic open world game that has sluggish and tedious gameplay, zero replayability, and some of the most boring and uninspired missions I’ve ever experienced. Nobody complained either when that got a 10/10.

You two should absolutely cover kena bridge of the spirits. It's not getting a lot of traction & seams to be right up your alley
They have been playing it on Twitch recently, so maybe...
I definitely have some empathy for the simplicity in the final loop and the waypoints and all that. They had endlessly open gameplay in Dishonored and Prey and people didnt buy those games.
Dishonored sold well.
@@Gremlyne It sold well enough for a sequel. Dishonored 2 sold… erm… “we need a plan B” amount. And then Prey (plan b) sold “we need someone to buy our studio” many.
I don't think that was the reason for the sales. In fact, the open endedness was a selling point for the Dishonored franchise. Dishonored 1 actually did very well. Dishonored 2 however didn't quite do as well as they wanted let alone the stand alone DLC. I think Dishonored 2 sold like a total of 2 million the last time anyone bothered to check. As for Prey, I didn't even pay attention to it, since it didn't interest me. Honestly, Deathloop should've sold much much better cuz they don't have as much competition due to delays and whatnot, while the pandemic still has some ppl chilling at home.
@@1ProAssassin Big immersive sandbox sims like Dishonored or Hitman or Deus Ex (another franchise that recently faded after two games leading to a studio sale) are a fairly niche genre. Deathloop smoothed out some edges at the cost of open freedom, and it’s a hit.
@@ERoBB1 I think it was a "hit" because of the endless trailers and otherwise massive marketing push. I'd be interested to know how much all of that cost in the end.

Deathloops gameplay is almost perfect. Almost
Well they can always try again in death loop 2
Yeah, now give us actual problems to solve with the gameplay, like different enemy types or interesting mission objectives. The Gameplay is so much fun, but it feels like a really long demo to me.
See…this is why I come to Girlfriend Reviews. Y’all cut through the hype and really dig down into whether it’s worth playing something or not. The purported concept of Deathloop got me excited, but hearing that it works nothing like what they hyped it up to be has me not regretting I didn’t pick it up.
Excited for the behind the scenes video!
Oh man the ‘there won’t be any fireworks’ killed me
if the had put A Tribe Called Quest in thd trailer I might have actually bought this. Great video ss always!
Review scores are always subjective. Also, a 10 for one title doesn’t mean it’s the same experience as another title. I love BOTW (which is a 10/10 for me) but there’s other games I enjoyed just as much that weren’t as weighty of a title (Journey and Tearaway come to mind). To me, those other titles gave me an experience I would never forget and I enjoy the experience. I like ACG’s scale because it takes out the 1-10 scale and make it more about someone’s enjoyment at the current cost of entry. Anyway, well done video but it felt too heavy handed to prove how Deathloop didn’t deserve a score someone else gave it. 🤷🏾♂️
I agree, I felt like half of this review was "here's why it's not a 10/10 for people who felt that way." I don't think RDR2 or BOTW are 10/10's but they do, and I won't tell them why they're wrong.
Yeah, very hypocritical of the reviewer. There are also mostly jokes, which are based on objective mistakes on the reviewer's front and almost none of real critique, which is actually provided by websites like IGN, who in their review of the game at least reviewed the game and not the reviewer's experience with the game (which are very different things when we talk about such complicated design-wise game as DEATHLOOP, where at almost every level of gameplay players have options).
But you complain about her opinion, the opinion that complain another person's opinion. And I think big-media critics like IGN should have at least a basic understanding of what popular opinion would be (a score didn't involve too much personal feeling). What happens if an IGN reviewer gives Fallout 76 a 10 because that's how he/she feels, but 99% of people think it's garbage? I'm not saying they are wrong for what they did, but when you are against the opinion of most people, you need to prepare for people to complain, just like you and I did. LOL
I'm still sad we wont get a conclusion of LoTR series.
The episode of stargate SG1 "window of opportunity" could be a great source of new groundhog day memes for future videos
IN THE MIDDLE OF MY BACKSWING?!?!
The trailer y'all created gives a better representation of the game! Most honest trailer I've seen in a while! Wish it was the real one
Its not a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination. But I think its a really good game. I've only been playing in single player but I've had a hell of a time wirh deathloop.
It might not be masterpiece, but it's funny how the reviewer is fine with RDR, BOTW and GOW getting 10/10 despite these games having flaws as well.
@@andreymagnuss I honestly enjoyed this game way more than the bland gameplay of RDR2
@@andreymagnuss botw has flaws, but by the metrics game reviewers all use it's absolutely a 10.
@@samadams8533 not everyone thinks like you
Well i really did enjoy the game. Even enough to platin it on ps5. And there are many ways to kill the targets on different ways but it is true that it's kind of a bummer that there is only one way to kill them all in one loop. Still a hell of a great game imo.
Not a 10/10 but maybe a 8 ir even 9/10
There is only one way to kill them in one day, but is it a problem? It's an endgame, and leading to it is player's exploration of game's systems and narrative, which is very varied on all fronts: level-design with different paths to take, order in which to complete missions is also based on what player decides to do given the information player received during previous missions. The problem is with the review which is shallow and filled with jokes, whilst the critique part is burried under the reviewer's personal experience with the game, which reviewers hasn't been able to distinguish from what the game is.
Love you guys, good to see you back :D
EEEEEEE!!! I LOVE THE MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE REFERENCE AT 3:30!
I’m just happy we got girlfriends reviews 😄
This isnt a review of backseat gamer this is a normal review.
"You're not even the best drummer in The Beatles" ouch! Writing and editing in Girlfriend Reviews are always top notch as usual. 10/10
The "can you kick it" trailer was hilarious 😂
Me: eagerly searching up if deathloop is on ps4 nooooooo also me: realizing it gonna be realised to xbox next year woooooo.
The thing I love most about Deathloop, apart from the mystery element, is its by far Arkanes most marketed game, so it will hopefully lead people to Arkanes other masterpieces such Prey and the Dishonored series, which would be amazing
The Tribe Called Quest reference was great!
I love all of the videos you guys make. Thank you for bringing joy into my life, even just a little bit. It means so much.
This is amazing and I love it. And I even loved Deathloop. Keep up the great work!
I truly and honestly hope this video doesn’t contribute to the death of my favorite AAA genre…
It would not until there are people who can listen to review and think at least for a bit. A worthless review filled with jokes rather than valid criticisms. Unfortunately, many reviewers on youtube, unlike profile media, can't grasp what this game with complicated game-design has to offer. It's enough to read a few positive reviews to understand, that somehow reviewers like this do not understand what linearity is and blame a very non-linear game for being linear.
"Actual random frame in the title sequence"!? You rickrolled me hard on that one...
Was not expecting an Osita Iheme meme in a Girlfriend Reviews video. Blindsided me with that one at 4:53
Wait, how is Dishonored Bioshock in London? yeah they're both immersive sims but their approaches to level design, gameplay, abilities, and combat are completely different. yes I realize its a joke but still
Eh I still love it and I'm going thru it taking my time with it. Prey never clicked for me and Dishonored pretty had only 2 ways to deal with all the targets. Deathloop does feel like a more limited Dishonored cause of the multiplayer aspect which I'm 10000% sure is the reason you're only allowed to bring in 3 guns and 2 powers (and only with 2 upgrades each too when each upgrade skill is tied to it's own button. Like shift has the swap and kick abilities being R2 and R3 respectively, not like they're bound to the same command)
General rule: integrated multiplayer (multiplayer that is NOT it's own separate mode a la the Assassins Creed games till 4) always, without fail, makes a single player game worse but not vice versa (Like the single player stuff being added to GTA Online)
I think slabs and trinkets are limited more to encourage creative approach and builds for different gameplay situations and missions you can plan. The review is complete garbage by someone who seemingly didn't even try to grasp the gameplay systems provided by the developers. All the jokes are based on reviewers complete lack of comprehension of the tutorial, which is 2 hours so that things like that don't happen.
Outer Wilds Echoes of the Eye is about to release, you gotta check it out! It's not only a 10/10 but also perhaps the best backseat gaming experience in recent years! (Unless he tries to manually land on the sun station)
Lmao the “can I kick it” launch trailer
