Honestly, it has to be Super Mario Bros. It's not the worst video game movie, but it is the one that will make you yell "Wait! Why?!" at the screen the most.

The Sonic movie and Detective Pikachu were pretty good, maybe watch those too offset the bad ones like Mario Bros and Assassin's Creed
I loved this video almost as much as Paul Anderson loves casting his wife in terrible movies

Plot twist: Paul W. S. Anderson doesn't even know the movies he's made are based on video games.
I think someone who was familiar with them advised him in MK and RE 1-2 but after that he made his own Shi* up
Honestly im prefectly fine with all of anderson's movies and eith him constantly casting his wife as the lead. its better bolt's shit movies on alone in the dark and that other video game.
I think he just regurgitates tropes that sound like they could be related to the movie based on the title alone.

Detective Pikachu and Sonic were actually decent movies that definitely showed they cared about the source material, so at least things have improved.
And then you get the new MK movie...
The new Tomb raider and mortal Kombat go in the bucket of progress for me. They’re definitely not bad. But they’re also not something I want to watch again.

@@krispykreme2103 This is a great one to bring up. Miike Takashi, a legit auteur, did a (questionable, in many ways) Yakuza film adapatation, and a bizarre but briliant Ace Attorney film which I still pray gets a sequel. Soooo meme-richly good.
I just think Hollywood believes, deep in their heart; that they’re the only medium that matters. They believe completely that books, plays, games and comics all exist purely to pass a test to maybe be made into a movie.
And if it’s an eastern movie, Russian, Spanish, anywhere other than America; it exists to be made into an American version.
I hate this. Why does it sound so right.

This is why movies based on video games and often books tend to be shit, because the directors and Hollywood producers think they can improve the story and end up butchering it and removing the bits that make the story good all to imprint their own vision on it.

The first silent hill movie is honestly a perfect adaptation of the game in terms of tone. They even keep Akira Yamaoka’s soundtrack.

Nah, it wasn't total trash but far too many people in it, not claustrophobic enough. It felt like an action horror a lot of the time - watch Jacob's Ladder and some David Lynch stuff, that's what Silent Hill was inspired by.

But also hollywood at the time were being a holes about the film. They didn't think a female lead would rack up as much sales so they had all these boring bits surrounding her husband for the film.

The tome of Jacob’s ladder mixed with a Clockwork Orange with the visual presentation of Evil Dead 2, Suspiria and Demoni/Demons (Lamberto Bava and Dario Argento) would be one of the best representations of the first 4 Silent Hills, the first 2 fatal frames, clock tower, rule of Rose, the first 3 resident evils AND Eternal Darkness Sanity’s Requiem

I literally cried during Detective Pikachu. Not because of anything that happened in the movie, but the fact that I had finally watched a good video game movie. I felt the struggle of watching all the other failed adaptations lift off my shoulders.
Fun fact: resident evil was originally given to George A. Romero. He had an assistant sit down and play the game, while he took notes. Unfortunately Anderson's company bought the rights from capcom and so it never got farther than a rough manuscript.

The reason they’re not good is simple: they’re not targeting us, they’re targeting everyone else. Then they throw in “a little something” for us fans (*cough* MEOWSTER CHEF *cough*) and expect us to be cool with it.
They also try to make their own thing instead of staying true to the games story and lore.
Sometimes it can also go the other way where they try so hard to be good to the fans to the point where the movie elements are shit (the new mortal kombat movie is an example of this however I did absolutely love that movie)
There's not enough of "you" to sustain a good box-office run, so appealing to the general audience is just good business.
@@thubelihlezondi5822 Monster Hunter games have been selling like crazy so there's definitely a big audience of fans. And MCU movies show that appealing to fans doesn't compromise general audience appeal.
@@nerdtuga9180 Most MCU "fans" dont read comics, so that just proves my point. Again, gamers aren't the only target audience, there just aren't enough of them to get a good box-office return. Also, some gamers are especially precious about their favourite games and will be negative about movie adaptations. Its time nerds realized the world of entertainment doesn't revolve around them.
I just would like to point out that when Nintendo had to chose who to let make the upcoming Mario movie, they had the legendary studio that created Totoro and Spirited Away just chillin’ in their backyard. And they went with the Minions guys.

Yeah honestly that seems pretty reasonable to me. Creating movies is a business first and foremost. Do you think they're making a Mario movie because they have an incredible idea for a Mario movie? Or is it more likely they're making a Mario movie because they've run out of ideas and just want to make easy money? They gave it to a studio who pretty much guarantees big box office return. Who cares if the movie is actually good? Again, it's a Mario movie.

1. Ghibli disbanded (or is about to shut down, can't remember)
2. They specialize in 2D movies. Mario has mainly been in 3D games for years, and all of the recent main Mario games have been breathtaking visually. Not saying Ghibli can't come up with something visually breathtaking, but I think the traditional style of ghibli wouldn't fit the Mario aesthetic.

Exactly! But second movie though.... Yikes!!! But SH 2006 was pretty good, just not enough to match what was Silent Hill 2 game (which was the one with the most movie like story, buuuut alright, if they prefer the first game!)
If they also made a movie about SL 4 (The Room), it could be good (if they made a character relatable and with emotions)

I think the solution would be to make a movie based off an already cinematic game, like Uncharted. Oh, and to put in effort.
My favorites are the Tomb raider movies(the Angelina Jolie ones). Perfect amount of stupid, perfect use of Angelina Jolie's weirdness, perfect amount of: "hol'up a minute that's actually good".

It’s probably the best of the serious video game movies I’ve watched. The lore dump coming at the end to explain everything is still extremely clumsy storytelling, but it’s at least interesting enough that you want to make it to that. Also, it’s one of the few movies Sean Bean survives.
The first Silent Hill film was good. Hell, I even purchased it.
@@darthmaul589 The lore dump coming at the end is entirely the producers’ fault. Gans needed one more week to shoot the originally planned ending which was really ambitious but he had accumulated delays throughout shooting the movie and they refused to give him one more week and instead had him rewrite and shoot the ending in a day. Also Sean Bean wasn’t made to be in the movie at all, that’s why his character is useless and doesn’t die xD the producers forced Gans to put a male character in the movie because there were only females aside from pyramid head except the movie was already in the middle of production. They threatened to pull back and not to release his film in the US if he did not so he did.
All and all with what he was given he did really well.
Shelby if you see Paul Anderson as the director of a movie based on a videogame franchise you could expect 2 things:
1. A bad movie adaptation
2. Milla Jovovich

Uwe Boll isn’t just a Director. The man is a phenomena, something to be experienced as a whole. Including his impeccable movie reviews.
Apparently Uwe Boll's shtick is to make bad adaptations on purpose because it generates him the most money with the least effort. This is due to some loopholes in the business in his country. He's the real life version of The Producers movie.
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within comes to mind. Its not based on any of the FF games but was made by Sakaguchi. Its not an amazing movie by any stretch, but i am pretty found of it. It was pretty groundbreaking for its time with computer animation.

I never played the game but I loved the Detective Pikachu movie.
I felt like 80% of the movie was pretty good (if a bit odd), but the other 20% just didn't feel like Pokemon at all
@@GrahamRomero it was hyper realized pokemon that did it in. If it had been animated (no live action at all) it wohld have looked much better.
@@adakahless I was actually totally fine with that, I just didn't like pretty much all of the final conflict/ending. Pikachu talking also felt off, but then again there's Meowth from the shows (granted very different reasons for talking).
The fact that you didn’t play the game and liked means you’re the target audience.

For those unaware, the first Resident Evil movie was an Alice in Wonderland allegory, which is why the main character is named Alice, the villain is named the Red Queen and it takes place underground.
But for real Marilyn Manson nailed the music.

It wasn't aggressively terrible like many videogame movies, but it was very forgettable, just another one of those bland action fantasy movies from early 2010's. They should've kept the fairytale atmosphere.
You know, it made the checklist. There was prince, there was jumping, there was persia, we had princess, jumping, sands of time, jumping... So yeah, passable
You should look up how Paul treats people on set, particularly stunt doubles. Not only does he destroy game franchises, he literally ensures people are horribly injured and mutilated in the process ✨
Olivia Jackson was a stunt double for Milla and is lucky to be alive after what happened to her.
