      In NieR Replicant, the big reveal is that the shades (the enemies in the game) are actually human souls, and you are playing as an empty shell of the main human soul that is needed to bring back humanity after the world was destroyed. You end up killing all the shades and the main human soul and doom mankind, which explains why there are no more humans in Automata.

      The quality of my experience, or rather my enjoyment, literally decreased ever since continuing after Route A. This game was so hyped that my expectations were also raised accordingly. The gameplay (and the story except for its motif and premise), however, really seemed stale to me, especially when it came to the end game. I know this game allows for several combos with different weapons (in typical hack and slash fashion) but I‘m pretty sure even that is done better in other games like dmc or bayonetta. The enemies literally turn into damage sponges after the first ending. And I also dislike the gimmick of supposed „endings“ actually just being cuts or time skips in the plot. They shouldnt be considered endings. At most, this game has 3 real endings. Though, I digress: I think what irritates me most about this game is that most people who praise it as a „masterpiece“ are so vague and abstract about what exactly makes them use that title. The only concrete thing I‘ve heard is „its beautiful“ specifically in relation to its music (to which I‘d agree, the music is breathtaking, though thats subjective) .

    • @koichikun2033
      @koichikun2033 Год назад +2

      Nah the reason he played was like many others who dislike this game.
      Everyone said its a 10 out of 10 game, game of the year and many who never played jrpg's think yeah why not seems cool.
      And bam you play just a slightly better game than the average jrpg, which just annoys you, cause the the only thing about this game is good is the story and music.
      The combat is so bad, that you just can start playing on easy, cause there is nothing to learn about the combat which will reward you (i know there are many weapon combinations and combos, but they all just useless, cause you can just spam attack and it will be the same outcome)
      If nier has gameplay and bosses like in souls or kingdom hearts (secret bosses which you just spam would also be cool), if you set the difficulty higher, there would be way less people who would complain.
      Also you get nothing from exploring the world, you will be rewarded with dust and a useless pod, at that point the world could just be linear, cause it doesn't matter if you search the world for better equipment.
      A Game shouldn't be called perfect, when only the music and story is good.
      I think a perfect game should also provide a good combat system and reward you for exploring the world, if it has a big world.
      Nier could be so much better than it is.
      *If you recommend someone to play nier automata, just also tell them to play on easy and not expect anything about the gameplay and what the world has to offer. Just enjoy the story.*
      That way i can see how someone could call this game a masterpiece, but else you must be delusional.

      @@koichikun2033 I honestly found the gameplay decently fun, sure it’s no Metal Gear Rising Revengeance or Bayonetta but it’s still pretty fun. You always gotta think fast, actively attacking and evading enemy attacks you can’t just attack and not do anything else. But I do sort of agree with you, in terms of gameplay it’s honestly not the greatest game I’ve ever played but it definitely was still decent. The story and music is definitely the main focus of the game and it was honestly fine with me, similar to Nier replicant as well, the gameplay is pretty meh in that game but the story and music is fantastic so it’s literally not a big deal to be honest.
      Also the first prologue chapter is not the greatest since when you die you gotta restart the whole thing which might piss people off. So it takes you like a good hour before you can save the first time.

    • @marcosrego7219
      @marcosrego7219 Год назад +7

      Even if it wasn't a reference to Emil.. the basic style kind of "baby/childish" is clearly meant for us players to feel a bit guilty for killing them, to wonder what's the purpose of that (those small robots even try to reproduce like humans). It's part of the concept and story. This review ignores that completely like someone that plays and skips all cutscenes and story, that is one of the main parts of role playing.
      And not even all robots are like that.
      One thing I totally agreed, those invisible walls on the buildings were unnecessary, I also tried many times to pass by them like in the video, on the first hours of playing until I understood how the game was programmed. The player shouldn't feel that.
      If that's a reason to say the game is bad.. WTF NO!

    OK. let me summarize:
    In the first half of this video, the creator tells us that the graphics aren't great and that you have to grind too much because of the extra endings.
    In the second half he gets angry that the cutscenes after the fights don't match the fights and says the story is bad because the statement "emotions are forbidden" is broken right in the first few minutes of the game and because inanimate objects (So everything in the game) should be emotionally tied to the player.
    Here is my review to this Video:
    1. Graphics are bad = True
    2. Grinding is there = True
    3. Cutscenes do not match the fights = True
    4. Nobody lives and we should be emotional for inanimate objects = True

  • @mistman_161
    @mistman_161 Год назад +10

    I'll just try to adress a few points in the video in no particular order:
    If you think the combat system lacks depth, I strongly encourage you to check out "donguri".
    Why is it ridiculous to sympathize with machines and androids? Every single video game character is just a bunch of pixels. Every book character is a bunch of words. Do you have trouble sympathizing with Po from Kung Fu Panda or Wall-E just because they aren't human?
    The visual design is simplistic, I'll give you that. I do think a lot of areas look bland. But I also think that several areas look very nice. And areas such as the Tower and The Copied City are intentionally minimalist.
    I don't think the Machines have bad designs just because they're simplistic. Some of the larger Machine designs are actually quite creative as most of them include Stubbies somewhere on their body. That's not bad, that's just consistent and clever, building upon what already exists.
    There is a good number of bosses that are just balls with lasers. But they all have different mechanics and there's plenty of other bosses that are different. And when it comes to the game "robbing you of the satisfaction of defeating them", that's a *you* problem much like most of the points made in this video. I beat up the boss, I survived, I progressed the story, I leveled up. That's satisfying to me.
    The game does disable fast travel during a few missions. I don't think that's an issue since the map isn't that big, there're animals for faster travel and there's usually something along the way to your destination.
    As you poorly explained, the game does make you replay 80% of the same content with 9S. The other 20% being 9S-unique things and added context. But then you made it sound like Route C and D do the same thing, making you replay the same sections which is just straight up false.
    "Grinding is useless since the enemies are always going to be a couple levels higher." Once again, false. There were many points in my playthrough where I was the same or higher level than the enemies. I didn't even need to grind. I just finished side quests.

    video games are interactive…i dont get why reading is incompatible with that. thats like saying ‘why am i looking at animations and stuff in a video game, if i wanted to watch animated characters doing stuff id rather watch a movie.’ video games add interactivity to other more rigid mediums like books or movies. you still read and watch.

  • @sinwalker_gaming7569
    @sinwalker_gaming7569 Год назад +34

    OK buckle up people because I’m gonna counter every thing he says. Also, I don’t expect him to read all this since he’d “rather read a book.” Also only read this if you are interested, it’s pretty long.
    1. The character designs are perfect not just for the androids, but also the machines. There’s nothing wrong with simplistic designs and obviously he overlook the fact that some of them are wearing outfits.
    2. Yeah, they reused buildings… What’s your point, every video game reuses assets and while I will agree it is less subtle in Nier: Automata I don’t understand how this minor aspect is something that bother’s you to the point where you don’t like the game.
    3. An invisible wall is nothing new. It’s literally presents in every game and it’s not even just for the edge of the map or a clift of some sort. It’s also present in the main world of other games but it’s such a minor issue and if that bothers you that much, then that’s just petty
    4. I always hear people complaining about the PlayStation fan and yes, it is loud, but there is a fix to that… Turn up your volume, headphones, or just don’t play the game at all. I understand that a consoles fan can be very annoying, especially on the PlayStation, but would you rather have a game with terrible graphics but it barely affects the cooling system, or would you rather have a game with beautiful graphics, beautiful art style, and a somewhat louder fan (personally, the PlayStation fan doesn’t bother me)
    5. Now, the combat is interesting because there is a wide variety of attacks you can perform and link combos with it’s not just a light attack spamming game with an occasional heavy attack. It’s much more than that and much more complex and once you actually get the combat down, it is more fun than you would think. you can’t just spam a button and say the combat is terrible in a game. if you really do think the combat is boring then how about you play it on hard or better yet very hard difficulty.
    6. Ok that this is absolutely bull crap. if you don’t like reading so much, then don’t play the game. In fact, reading is present in some of the most recognized and sought after games of all time. It’s not the developers fault that you don’t want to read and learn the story. As for the voice dialogue, it’s mainly present in dialogue that relates to the main story of the game. Every other piece of dialogue is just for quest and stuff that’s not as vital or important to the story.
    7. As for the bosses, not all of them are the big sphere Goliath’s. To be honest I don’t understand what gives you the impression that literally every boss is the same exact enemy but that’s beyond me, and who cares if you yourself don’t get the finishing blow. If you beat the boss and get the cutscene, then you beat the boss and get the cutscene. all people wanna do is beat the boss and guess what the cutscene indicates that you either beat them or you enter their next phase. If you really wanted to fight a hard boss and finish them off yourself then there are plenty of other games out there where you can do exact that.
    8. …OK to be honest I don’t even know what game you’re playing anymore. Of course they’re going to send multiple waves of enemies at you. That’s how the game works and it wants you to fight the enemies so you can progress, level up, and give you resources. This is all for your benefits and sometimes you can even just run past enemies and not have to attack them. Sometimes it’s mandatory sometimes it’s not and believe me it is not hard to figure out if it’s mandatory or not. Also, it’s not always going to be straightforward. Sometimes It’ll throw enemies at you that you have to maneuver in order to defeat and that’s what makes the gameplay more fun.
    9. The story is depressing… and yet, you want to degrade it for being like that. You’re calling one of the main protagonist dying spilled milk? You’re calling another protagonist, saving one of the other protagonist and then leaving herself to die so she can be with her fallen partners a broken toaster? Or how about the fact that you play as two characters throughout two journey but instead of both of them being mirrored, you get to see both sides of the story? Pity
    So, as you can see, none of his reasons can barely stand on their own if not at all. The reason for him hating this game is just because he wants to. His reasons are so incompetent and outrageous and could literally be used on so many other games for those of you who love the game. I love it as well and I’m happy we can show our appreciation for this game. And for those of you who don’t like it try to have a little bit of fun. Remember it’s OK to have your own opinion. I didn’t get through 38 seconds of this video because I wanted to read the comments first. Plus I don’t want anyone to ruin this amazing game for me from some RUclipsrs dumb opinions. I love this game. I prefer games like this over dumb first person shooters. I’m a person who prefers playing very story heavy games with fun gameplay like a good ol hack and slash. Nier automata is that game for me. A story heavy game with hack and slash combat. I’ll admit, I cried when I got ending e. I’ve been replaying the game again in Japanese and so far I’m loving the voice acting, but I think I love the English a bit more because I don’t have to read subtitles while trying to fight a boss or something. In the Japanese voices I might miss some dialogue if I’m battling something, but in any case this game is amazing. It pulls at your heartstrings. If a game, anime, movie, etc can make me cry then it’s a good show/ movie, etc

    Though I appreciate a different point of view on any game, I feel this review doesn't deliver a solid criticism on the game for some reasons that I'm going to write down.
    * When discusing about the desings of the other characters, please show your audience some of the designs in the game and compare them to those designs from other games you think they look better, and, if you're specialized in the field of desing or anything related, or you've heard or read about this topic, bring up points that can make your opinions solid.
    * Though the map in general feel lifeless and empty, invaded in some places by invisible walls, this section felt like it was solely a criticism to the hub of the game (the City Ruins), but what about the other areas of the map? What did you think of them? Because again, I have no clue your target audience, but for someone that is totally new and has no clue of this game, this can feel like misinformation to make them think that the whole map is the City Ruins.
    * Don't asume everyone knows what you mean and what you like. I say that because, if someone (like me) has never played a "good" beat'em up, hack n' slash" game, and our only exposition to those genres is this game, though one can google it, mostly you'll base yourself from the review you're watching or reading, so try to give examples of those games you think are better than NieR: Automata, so your audience know, first off, other titles similar to Automata, and second, those that are way better than what they played or were about to play.
    * If it's you who was playing on the bosses section, I think a part of this boredom or dislike for the bosses can do with the game itself, but the other half has to do with the player not trying or putting some effort to understand the game mechanics.
    * At least on Easy mode, there is no grinding required. Even as a low level player I could complete the whole Route A (16+ hours on the game right now) like that, and even skipping minions I didn't feel like fighting.
    * At least on Steam, most players who have played the game on PC have 39+ hours in the game. If you're going just for the story, it's less that 100 hrs. I truly wish to know where did you get that information.
    * And for thr time being, that's the criticism I have for this video.
    I thank you for having a different point of view from a game I think isn't that bad, but I hope you can follow some of the things I discuse here.

    • @ZumaB

      His opinions on the designs are pretty flawed imo. Its literally the aesthetic they're going for. I've only beaten the game once and don't really want to go through it fully again but if i had to criticize this game i wouldn't start from there. To go on a bit of a tangent here, my issue with this game stems from the combat. Although for some it may be absolutely amazing, but i've grown highly used to intense combat from Platinum games and this honestly doesn't offer that. It seems so close to what i would've preferred which is a more precise combat experience from the differing weapons this game gives you. The bosses, ESPECIALLY THE OPERA SINGER, were fine in my opinion. They were aptly designed and i especially enjoyed running through the game as far as that boss on my second playthrough. The uploader just seems to be picking on things that he can't seem to fully grasp. The game isn't bad, just not for everyone, including myself.

    Most of the criticism in this video is boiled down to i dislike the design choice. There was a few valid points the buildings with invisible walls is the most accurate none troll critique. But really you complain about designs that were designed from that way as a style. I dislike final fantasy 9 but I don't think its a bad game its design was just not for me. I didn't like the characters designs and animation and it pulled me out of the narrative.
    The storytelling in the game was interesting to me the second playthrough was the least interesting however some of the insight from another characters perspective were really great and provided insight to the narrative that they are evolving. Your explanation of the 3rd playthrough couldn't be more inaccurate. It was not playing through the same story again at all the events your main character died in the first 30 minutes it was more like empire strikes back this is the playthrough designed to do all of the bad things you couldn't believe they did.
    The levels bosses and characters were all dramatically different in a chilling way.
    Your welcome to not like the design but your calling it bad is like saying a van gogh painting is bad because you dislike the style he painted. There is a difference between not for you and bad and I can't help but feel you got confused on that.

    The enemy design makes sense and is pretty effective in my opinion. Such simple, clunky designs make it easier to separate them from androids and dehumanise them, they're somewhere between cute and creepy, and overall a blank slate for the player to interpretate how they like. Also them being bulky and rounded helps with visual clarity, especially during shoot em up sections. The eyes make for a convenient 'tell' for their attacks too. As much as I love rad mech designs, it'd be kinda lost on the hoardes of basic enemies.

    While I understand Yoko Taros work, and how much of his story writing relies on symbolism and interpretation, i didnt get that feeling here.
    The whole "playthrough the game multiple times" bit was just strange. I didnt understand the point of playing the same story over again as 9S after playing as 2B. It didnt add anything to the game, just left me frustrated.
    While I understand a lot of the messages and symbolism in the game, I think I'd be more inclined to feel something if the characters weren't so inconsistent. 2B as a character was extremely shallow during the first playthrough, and once she finally becomes interesting as a character she dies off. 9S was initially very interesting as he seemed to question the reasoning behind what they were doing as Yorha. Its a shame after 2B dies his whole philosophy devolves into "i want to kill everything around me since nothing matters".
    A2 was an interesting character but we don't get to see enough of her to really understand her intentions.
    And yes I understand if you go through all of the side quests you see more dialogue, but I played through all of them and felt like I was learning more about world than the characters.
    I find a lot of the themes presented come off as less philosophically sound and more pretentious than anything.

    • @featherton3381
      @featherton3381 2 года назад +3

      Sorry for the essay below.
      I don't really agree with this. On a first playthrough, 2B does seem a bit shallow (nothing more than a tsundere) and I remember feeling like ending A was overdramatic. But the thing is, her character continues evolving even after she dies in route C, and it takes a single (well foreshadowed) paragraph from A2 to completely recontextualize 2B's entire personality. If you replay route A, there's actually a lot going on there with 2B.
      I agree that route B got pretty tedious. Large parts of route B were exactly the same as route A down to the dialogue but with a different viewpoint character. But I wouldn't say we got nothing out of it. I think route B (if you ignore the tedious repetition) did a good job further fleshing out 9S's character, especially near the end. We also got some foreshadowing about the red girls. But yeah, that was the weakest part the game.
      A2 did have the least screen time, but it felt very efficiently done. We got her backstory and a nice short story about how Pascal broke through her hatred of the machines. Her role was to play a foil for 9S who had the same hatred, but while she was mellowed out by Pascal, 9S got to spend route C being continually mindfucked by the red girls until he broke down completely. The reason 9S seemed less interesting in route C was because he lost all of his initiative. For the entire route, he was being manipulated by the red girls and simply reacting to what they wanted him to do. For me, I loved route C because it was our chance to explore the red girls through what they did to 9S.
      I liked Yoko Taro's philosophical approach to the game. I've watched several video essays and I've found that everyone got something different from the game, which is a good sign that it did it right. For me, I really liked his playful questioning approach to the philosophy of the game. He was very interested in taking standard ideas from philosophy and from other media that try to explore ideas of existentialism, truth and meaning and deconstruct them. One example is the number of machines named after philosophers and how each character was made specifically to mock or refute their counterpart's philosophy (e.g. Engels is a factory, or Pascal loses her village because she taught them to act in fear (which addresses how Pascal's wager essentially assumes that one can live a good faithful life driven by fear of hell alone)). But he also caught me by surprise several times. For example, in route A he plays out the tired trope of "what does it mean to be human?" straight while 9S's repeated claims that the machines feel nothing and are simply replicating human actions become more and more unconvincing. Yet, at the end we learn that 9S was right all along. The machine network took the information from the human databank on the moon and spread it through the network ordering its machine units to mimic human society complete with all of its flaws. At the same time, he was wrong because even a mimicry of humanity is essentially indistinguishable from humanity once it's done well enough. To me that is the opposite of pretentious (I'd define the game to be pretentious if it relied on showing off rote knowledge of philosophy while lacking any true exploration of the corresponding ideas. For example, the big bang theory is full of shallow references to nerd culture without any real exploration of those ideas beyond the joke of "this is something only a nerd would know or care about").

So why did't they just make the 2B and 9S have thorough dialogue and merge the 2 playthroughs? There is so much downtime where nothing of significance happens. Just make the characters talk and don't waste the player's time with shitty repetitive gameplay. The narrative is sound on paper and is interesting in a vacuum, but falls flat in execution.

      So what's the point of giving the player a large area to wander when the it doesn't allow you to fully explore said areas? It just comes off as wasted space when a majority of the areas you can see are locked off with arbitrarily placed walls.
      Crap on RDR 2 all you want at least there you can feasibly go to every area on the map

      @@jeremyallen492 Because Automata doesn’t focus on exploration. It is an action JRPG. If you wanted to explore areas in Automata, the best way is to do side quests or main quests. Also I’d say there isn’t that many invisible walls.

      @@DannyBallin99 so what's the point? If they're just going to half ass the open world they might as well have just canned it altogether and gone with a linear approach that only allows the player to go to specific areas for specific mission objectives via a central hub like what Shadow Warrior 2 did

    I was so excited for this game and while playing it, I was genuinely sure it could be one of my favorite games of all time. I’m not into the colors of the game, they are pretty dull for me. But after all was said and done, it ended up falling apart for me. I played it on my steam deck and it maintained 60 FPS, the entire time, happily. But the world is so small, and I’m really not a fan of going to the same places over and over and over again. It felt empty. Once the 20 hour mark hit, I was mindblown route C, and was ready for the game to open up and the story to truly begin. Only 6 hours later, I had all endings minus Y, and I felt no desire to collect and upgrade all weapons. Not only that, but the combat just didn’t feel interesting enough despite all of the cool animations. The characters and concepts were cool, but I didn’t feel they were used to their full potential. Oh, and I was into the shooter segments when they first came up, but doing them so much really had me tired of them-I did not like 9S’s gameplay. I also felt we could have gotten way more of A2, her rebellious nature turned to “I must help the machines” incredibly fast. Finally, I wasn’t a fan of how you very rarely collected weapons and I never once used my materials for everything and made it through the game just fine. And while the soundtrack was legendary, it isn’t enough to save a game for me.
    In the end, the game was only a 6/10 for me. I’m happy everyone else loves it as much as they do, though!

    Alot of these points while true, I find to be more nitpicking that anything. These are flaws the game makes up for in other areas. No game is perfect. If a 10/10 game for you is a perfect game with no flaws, then you will often be disappointed.

    The machines are, i think, intended to look overly simplified compared to the androids. Alien (or simplistic) in form, but familiar in their assimilation of human behaviors. A contrast. They are no different, comparatively, to the androids. But while the androids are encouraged within the game's narrative to suppress human emotion and behavior, the machines embrace it.
    Everything pressed to this disk serves a purpose. Every bit and byte (I can't defend invisible walls, but i'm sruggling to remember a time i noticed them in N:A ).
    I'll concede: in terms of a "game," Nier: Automata is bad... by definition. *BUT* in terms of a narrative or storytelling perspective, Nier: Automata is the best "game" of the last 10 years.
    With regard to multiple playthroughs: Its about perspective. **storytelling** I don't know of any other way to phrase it.
    Played on x1x and PC. No loud fan problems or noticeable performance issues.
    Grinding levels and chips are a legit complaint. BUT chips and levels are not required for a complete playthrough. Changing the difficulty doesn't hamper players in any way... Grinding upgrade materials, however is needed if you want to see 100% of N:A's content.
    I really don't want to boil down your eleven and a half minute "review" of a 60 hour game to "nah" (assuming you were being objective) but
    Nah. Nah, bro.
    EDIT: *YOu* may not have liked it, but it is not a bad game. Like, not even a little.

      One must be blind to not notice invisible walls in this game. But they are so ubiquitous, you quickly stop caring. The same can’t be said about bad camera though.

    • @Eltaurus
      @Eltaurus 3 года назад +3

      @@noop9k The main problem with those invisible walls is not that you cant go some places. It is that after some time you get so accustomed to them being everywhere, that you stop exploring the boundaries of the map so much. At the same time some stuff is actually hidden behind what you are led to believe is an invisible wall. The whole Emil arc is one big example.
      So in the end you have a choice of wasting tens of hours just bumping into all the invisible walls you can find or you miss some important content.
      I always get very upset, when the devs make this part of the exploration in the game so wrong.

    • @noop9k
      @noop9k 3 года назад +4

      @@Eltaurus This is not a "true" AAA game, budget was not that big. And it runs at 60 FPS. Sacrifices had to be made.
      To me, the invisible walls were, like I said, one of many cut corners. And I argue that invisible walls are much more annoying when they are relatively rare and therefore unexpected vs being almost everywhere in a more or less consistent way.
      Compare to HZD where sudden invisible walls block you mid-jump and you fall and die.

    • @Eltaurus
      @Eltaurus 3 года назад +1

      @@noop9k It doesn't take any budget at all to not place anything behind what looks like an invisible wall. I'm fine with the walls being in the game by themselves. But punishing players to explore holes in the map and at the same time making a motivation to do so is just a bad design.

    • @noop9k
      @noop9k 3 года назад +4

      Eltaurus Higher resolution collider geometry requires more memory and performance. Now, if every destroyed building floor, every hole is accessible, players will get stuck there or complain that they are empty, or that the camera doesn’t let them see anything or clipping through walls. Enemies will be able to get stuck there as well. This all has development and debugging and performance cost. Ability to crawl into every hole will only become a costly distraction. Let me remind again. This is a 60 FPS action game. PS4 CPU is garbage, despite 8 cores. For the last 20 years physics in games lags behind graphics and we don’t have games where you can stand on everything you can see , where we are not blocked by silly obstacles, where objects don’t clip onto each other.

He did actually point out valid criticism. Saying that the game has no flaws is kind of going against taros vision of his games. Automata was designed with these flaws and just cuz some of them are intentional doesn't mean people have to like them. Overall i think i disagree with a big bit of this review though.
