It's annoying to me that most male artist have the audacity to lip sync their plain performances.
We should really acknowledge how female artists (group or soloists) put A LOT OF EFFORT to their performances. Imagine singing the same song, in a different outfit, with the different story to tell, different dance break, etc.
WOMEN ARE FUCKING AMAZING!! THEY ARE THE INDUSTRY.
Not the audacity 😭😭😭 Honestly if your songs aren’t hard then what’s the point of lip syncing?
Facts
if youre saying the western male artists then yes but kpop male artists are a different story
@@strawb3rryluv agreed, honestly even soloists go hard in other countries. This is just a western (North america and European) issue
Women are held to such ridiculously high standards it's unreal. Reminds of how Britney was mocked for lipsyncing...
Ariana did a full on workout on that stage
Amazing 👏👏
i don’t know if she was lip syncing, could’ve been more reverb on those phrases in god is a women
@@maincoasters for me it was also mic effects rather than lip sync
@@joanquintero4670 yup!
@@maincoasters I definitely do not think so. She was heavily breathing and laughing at the end when she got excited and proud. And her falsetto climax is so good but sounded just a bit strained. I still can not do that though. Haha.
I'm not against lip synching when the female artists are doing a hard choreo or have an illness that difficult their breath
But male artists need to step up their game
Exactly lol 😂
I mean i never really care if a female does it
@@hunniii2356 only if it’s done with no effort especially at a pricey event
I take that back
live vocals still better than dance. let dancers do their job behind the singer. people came to listen to their real vocals not dance moves
i think lip syncing is only really “bad” when they blatantly lie about it
Otherwise the public will drag them
Or when they make fun of other artists who do it
Is holding a mic lying? It's implied that the mic is being used.
Personally, I don't care about lip syncing, concerts are a whole performance
@@MsAwesomeify i mean the “i never lip sync” ones, not directed at any artist in particular.
The WORST is when stans scream about their fave singing live and they believe it with their WHOLE essence. It's sad. 2021 vmas for instance!
Ari & Little Mix lipping a few notes here and there don't bother me AT ALL, everyone knows how capable of vocalists they are, whether you acknowledge it or not lol
For Ari I feel like from swt to now she hasn’t lip synced. Plus now we now what she can do like look at save your tears, and rain on me live.
Especially since they do full on choreography and have a lot of high notes and their songs. It would be unhealthy for they vocal cords to not lip sing once and a while
Ntm they don't lip ENTIRE songs, just parts of it that might be difficult sometimes like if ur sick or the choreography isn't made with live vocals in mind
love the amount of little mix videos in your recent posts. even though they do lipsync from time to time, we all know how insanely talented they are so when they lipsyinc to pre-recorded tracks it doesn´t bother me because I know how much effort and love they put behind every performance and they always bring it, whether it is a full dance routine with great vocals or an acoustic version.
Oh but it was ok for everyone to try and destroy Mariah one New Year’s Eve 😂

I feel like this video needs to be sent to every single person on Stan Twitter.
@Anne Day I feel like K-pop stans need to see it. Lip syncing in the K-pop in history has gotten ridiculous
@@nameisamine so many stans genuinely believe their favs are signing live in music show and attack u when u tell them they’re lip syncing
@@lunamoon6390 exactly. It’s so sad people can’t tell the difference
These days the Kpop pals don't even bother they just dance to the song and thats it lmao
@@lunamoon6390 It's ridiculous I swear. They will call you a hater and stuff when some groups haven't sung live in the entirety of 2021 💀
one thing that you didn't mention, but i think its very useful when it comes to knowing if a person is lip syncingits or not its the body language, like you really want me to to believe you're hitting that super high note with a completely straight face, or singing with so much emotion and not even smiling or "looking angry" for example.
Over exaggerated facial expressions can definitely be a sign!
I personally sing better when my face is completely relaxed and I don't make faces... Overly dramatic facial expressions are DEFINITELY a sign lol
I usually look at their neck muscles and (if visible) diaphragm. It's pretty obvious if someone is engaging their core to support a note or not. That said, there's still the potential that they're singing along to a pre-recorded vocal track without a live mic cos they just wanted to sing along despite it not being picked up lol.
its better to sing with a relaxed face lol less chance of strain unless you're intentionally singing in a way to activate ur facial muscles to help u sing
The fact I know exactly who you are referring to 💀
My respect goes for Beyoncé for pulling amazing vocals while giving her all in her dance routines.
Wasn’t there a rumor she had to sing while running on a treadmill in heels
@@tb11212 it’s not a rumor. It’s a known fact that her father who was her former manager as well as her old vocal coach David Lee Brewer used to make Beyoncé and her group members run in heels while singing at the same time to build up their endurance and stamina for singing and dancing at the same time
@Anne Day Exactly she's been caught many times using a pre recorded vocal track however it's not often.
Even Beyoncé lip sync a little when she first debuted in 2003. By 2006 she never or rarely lip sync
@@nateclipps that’s actually not true. Beyoncé still to this day uses prerecorded Tracks and lip syncs during tours and live shows. She sings live a lot don’t get me wrong but she’s no stranger to lip syncing her up tempo dance numbers
Appreciate the itzy here, they have some of the most challenging choreographies for k-pop girl groups but still sing live most of the time while sounding really good
Me too, didn't expect it in there goes me dancing to MITM and WANNABE
I agree but Itzy don’t really have hard vocals or raps tho.
@@mayayoung5405 Personally I think theu just keep it consistent in all 3 areas.

But yes Itzy are one if the most stable groups i’ve seen .
Honestly I don’t care if Mariah pre records some of those hard notes, she’s proved enough that she can do them during her prime so if she wants to lip them to protect her delicate vocals during tours I think it’s fine. She has an unpredictable and delicate voice due to nodules
Exactly and it’s not like she doesn’t do some hard parts of the songs live every concert
@@homeshoppingnetworkera1673 omg what a random era you are😂😂
@@polkafolka9724 thank u😌 these other eras are so uncreative
she also records backing vocals using her own voice and overlapping in the song which sometimes look like an attempt to lipsync but it was just overlapping vocals of herself meant for her to harmonize
Taaaahhhruuuueee darling!! Mariah had been singing for 32 years 🌚 it’s stupid not to lipsync
AS a Mixer, I'm not delusional and know that from time to time the girls lip-sync. But if I were to ask myself are they're lip-syncing the performance, I keep my eyes on Jesy. She's the most obvious one to notice when they decide to lip-sync (esp. if it's a handheld mic performance).
really? i thought was Perrie, specially in "Woman's world" and "Good enough" lives performances, she used to exaggerate her movements specially the hands. anyways, we all know they can sing so i'm glad that Perrie chose to not demage her voice.
@@amyhinault9602 Oh yeah in Good Enough Perrie was definitely the most obvious, she did a lot of exaggerated movements and and drops lol, but she's better at it now I think. Jesy is so obvious though, she rarely sang live in the last few years of Little Mix performances and you could tell because she would barely open her mouth or her movements wouldn't match. Even Leigh-Anne, her lip syncs were obvious if you paid attention just because her level of movement didn't match the vocals. Anyway, this isn't to bash them or anything btw
@@nehaali5499 yeah i've been watching their performances and you are correct! no worries i think little mix have never deny using lip sync, it is totally fine if your are a artist who have already proves they can pull a full live show. But yeah i wish jesy had put more effort in making it less obvious, at least perrie exaggerated but looks that she tried lol.
@@amyhinault9602 It's just sad that some Mixers will go above and beyond to defend them in situation when they're clearly lip syncing, they would be like oh they're just that good at singing it's definitely not lipped😂😭 Like it's okay to lip sync sometimes, dance movements and heat on stage make it hella difficult to sing properly without getting light headed, especially when it's a fast paced song
Actually, Perrie's is the most obvious. The woman simply cannot stay still when she lipsyncs.
Jade's is the most obvious after Perrie (she rarely even mouths the words 💀)
Jesy lipsyncing is actually quite hard to notice (she literally lipped all of the C5s in Nobody Like You during the Glory Days Tour and not one time did she make it seem as if it was not live)
Leigh's lipsyncing is also quite difficult to notice (e.g.:- No More Sad Songs) unless the girls are doing a lot of intense choreo (e.g.:- Power)
There are good excuses for a lot of female artists especially, since they are essentially required to dance as part of their performances
Ikr which is why I don't mind when they do esp when ik they have the voice
True but if they aren’t dancing and are lip-syncing it’s irritating
Pink is such a Strong vocalist, that she can actually sound incredible while doing all the acrobatics))Absolutely live))This Lady is Living Legend! P!nk is by far the best consistent live singer.
@@rockablity_hound1716 Lol, no.

Ultimately, I think it comes down to three things:
1. Can they actually sing? A singer like Beyoncé can get away with lip-syncing because she has proven time and time again that she is a very capable vocalist, so even if she "gets caught", she has plenty of receits to prove she ain't a fraud.
2. Why do they do it? Going back to Beyoncé, I feel like her lipping her inauguation performance is justified, since an unproperly rehearsed and sound-checked performance can be a nightmare, and you can't risk it in such an important occasion. Similarly, occasionally lipping the highest notes of asong when on tour not only seems reasonable, but also logical: even with a great technique, that shit is taxing. You can't be running a marathon everyday for months.
3. Are they good at it? IMO, the most important point. Lip-syncing is also a skill, and you can be good or bad a it, and you can put effort into it or none at all. Bon Jovi had a prime-time, New Year's Eve show in Spain where he pretty clearly lipped (he was still walking toward the microphone when his vocals started). Yet, even after such an embarrasing moment at the very start of the performance, he still gave one hell of a lip-sync. You can easily forget he was lipping because of how great his physical delivery was, and the performance was still super enjoyable.
She was also singing under that inaugural sound as well.
@@bmwjourdandunngoddess6024 exactly. She wasn’t lip syncing, she was singing along with her backing track.
I always look at the tongue and nostrils. You can look at the underside of the chin to check for the inevitable tension singing creates down there. Also the nostrils will involuntarily flare outwards as the level of airflow changes. Singers can’t fake that. You can just tell it’s actually pretty easy if you are a singer yourself.
My go to is always the nostrils as well. The more extreme the notes, the more they will flare, and it's unavoidable.
I hate when it’s ovbs lip sync but it’s there favs and they won’t admit it lmao
Same.
If their throat isn't moving up and down, they arn't producing any sound.
Literally just watched to see if you would acknowledge Demi for never lip syncing and it made me really happy to see that you did! It was amazing hearing those vocals live when I went to see Demi on tour.
Yes! Even after they didn’t recover from tonsil surgery and went tour anyways in 2014 vocals were live every day

I love how Ariana didn't lip-sync Side to Side at VMAs, she rarely lip syncs, and 90% of lip-syncing was 2013-2015, and the older she got the less she did it, and also she lipped Pink Champagne's A5s and Be My Baby's Bb5s which if she sang live would've destroyed her voice, but she managed to sing MOST live, respect tbh.
2015 and 2019 only
In be my baby 35-40% of the climax is lipped but most were live, she mostly lipped when she was sick, but she doesn't do it anymore
She rarely does. Because I observe that she wants to sing her ass off for real everytime. Some of her climaxes in "Be My Baby" and "God is a woman" (only the whistle parts) are lip-synced to protect her vocals. Do not sing A#5/Bb5 belts and whistles everytime!!! It is damaging to your voice!
she lips a lot on tour tho
@@inma5665 No she doesn’t. The only tours she lipped was Yours Truly Session & Honeymoon Tour & 80% of the whistles in GIAW in Sweetener Tour. Other than that, most of her tours are live and very interactive with her fans
The fact is even if they aren't lip syncing they have pitch correction while singing no one can physically sing well while dancing or walking its not a bad thing everyone does it its physically impossible not to

before i got into k-pop, I used to look down on pop singers for lip syncing. i primarily listened to American roots music that emphasizes technical virtuosity but also prioritizes communicating emotion over reproducing studio perfection. so i thought that if a singer didn’t have the chops to sing well and mostly in tune live, they were lesser than my faves. learning all the different things that comprise a k-pop stage changed my perspective on the use of lip sync. i’ve come to see that it’s a tool like any other, one that can be used to help preserve the voice and to craft the experience the artist intends the audience to have. of course it can be overused as well even to the detriment of the artist, and many stans will stubbornly continue to insist their faves aren’t lip syncing or even using pitch correction when it’s extremely obvious, lol. but I appreciate your nuanced perspective on the topic. it’s informing how I continue to look at lip sync and production as a whole in the music industry. great videos, i really enjoy your channel!
Yeah, it's done mostly to preserve the voice because they have to do a lot of performances over many years. It's also done so that they can focus more on the dancing and stage presence aspect and so make it more entertaining for the audience. This is especially true when the dancing is vigorous. The artist should sing live some of the time of course but I think it's a matter of choosing your battles wisely, and for the sake of longevity it is probably best for them to lip sync most of the time.
It's different for music shows/award shows and concerts. Singers should never lip sinc for full concerts that fans have paid to go to (unless they have a health reason for doing so). Kpop idols should be taught proper vocal technique and do proper vocal warm ups. Most of them are in groups and only sing a few lines per song, so they should be able to sing live at concerts.
funny that it took K Pop to change your mind, as its the most corporate, fabricated, and commercialized type of music.
@@fartyfat6539 It still stemmed from American music lol. And not all K-pop is "commercialized", you are mostly only talking about usually mainstream songs and groups. There is nothing wrong with that either. If I would say that, I am basically also ignoring the intense hardwork of the trainees and the hardships they suffered before joining the group and for just making their songs and for you to just summarize them as a whole in a condescending and depressing way. Not great perspective.
@@archive2500 it is stemmed from US music. I'm not saying one is worst than the other but KPop (at least the mainstream part) is very corporate and far removed from their idols' musical artistry.
So its just funny how they said that they can't appreciate US pop music (for its performative entertainment value) but went straight to K-Pop which is the bigger offender out of the 2.
P!nk is the only artist that I know that still singing live while spinning in the roof
She’s like insanely fit though, it’s amazing
kpop is hard to tell because the backtracking is so freaking loud.
As a kpop stan I totally agree! The only time we're able to get genuine clear vocals are during concerts
I think the only people who look down on lip-sync or think its cheating or w/e, are people who themselves aren't singers or performers at all and they honestly just don't understand how difficult performing is. Yes, Pink can do it at one-off performances and blow everyone's damn minds, but, not everyone is Pink and even Pink doesn't sing fully live on tour. Fans would be incredibly disappointed if they went to see their fave performer on tour and the performer's voice was utterly fried from months of daily fully live performances. If all singers did their tours 100% live, they'd have to do far fewer live performances too, or they would inevitably end up with no voice at all by the end of the tour.
I personally couldn't give less of a shit about whether a singer sounds as good as their studio track when singing live; most don't and it's absurdly unrealistic to expect anyone's live vocals to be as "good" as studio produced vocals. I just wish artists were more transparent and upfront about how much lip sync and pre-recorded tracks are used during live performances so maybe everyone could stop acting like it's a big deal.
ALSO I think people seem to forget that even if they are using a vocal track, they did ACTUALLY sing that at some point, they're just not doing it right now.
MAD RESPECT FOR MS. GRANDE FOR ALWAYS SERVING ✨LIVE VOCALS✨
As a Normani stan I wish that when mani does heavy choreo in a song at least give us like one live performance of you vocally slaughtering the song instead of just choreo or like do the heavy choreo but like give us some beautiful riffs and runs or something
If you’ve been following normani for years then you’d know she’s not capable of “vocally slaughtering” a song live. She’s mediocre vocally but an amazing dancer and performer
those heavy choreo is so unnesessary in such slow song tbh
We know she can dance her ass off I just want her to showcase range and all of that without dancing and just do more vocally
@@cashcow4450 “mediocre” means average, the average person can’t sing the way normani can, you should know how good she really is since apparently you’ve been following her for years, she just needs more to explore her voice a little more
@@kphoria1009 girl the average person most definitely can sing like normani. when I'm trying to see if a singer is lip syncing or not, I pay attention on their neck, if their larynx move, probably their singing live(sorry for the gramatical mistakes, I'm not fluent in English yet).
You’re fine and I do the same
Also a lot of singers will close their mouth just a bit too soon haha
That's actually not a good idea. Look up Barbra Streisand performing. Her larynx don't move and there's barely any movement in chest and neck. But she is indeed singing live

Honestly I like when artists power through their stages and show the rawness of their voice. You have good and bad performances, it's okay. If you know that you can't hit a certain note, you can lower/raise the key or cut it short. I like when artists play with their notes and change it. I tend to notice when my faves lip-sync and it kinda disconnects me from their performance so I end up not watching it all the way through. This is why I love Mamamoo so much, they even intentionally "mess up" or laugh to let fans know they're singing live. They've started including lip-syncing into their performances here and there but generally they prefer live. Same can be said for Dreamcatcher.

Thank you for pointing out how hard it is for singers to project their lower registers when moving. I remember when Dinah and Ally in 5H would struggle with their parts in Work From Home early on bc they were so low and everyone suddenly started swearing they had zero breath control. Somehow Dinah is the one still stuck with this stigma even though she stopped having issues after a few performances whereas Ally just pitched her part up.
crazy how camila never lipsyncs during fifth harmony
@@igiglim True. Everyone in 5H almost always sang live. The only one who ever intentionally lipped was Normani and even that was rare. Typically the few times they’re “lip syncing” is just their backtrack turned up too loud bc they’d still be trying to sing over it to let you know their mics were on no matter how weird it sounded (even in that clip he used of Lauren she does a really gnarly, rough belt right after that when she brings the mic back up and there’s no way that was pre-recorded).
Lip syncing high notes while on touring kinda makes sense I mean perrie has a high note in almost every song of little mix & if they do even 15 shows think abt it she'd have to hit a lot of high notes which will obv damage her vocals
when it comes to kpop, the industry itself has made it very difficult for the groups to stop lip syncing. the choreos become harder by day, every comeback that a group has, the choreo gets more difficult than the last, therefore, less singing is to be realistically expected. but that bothers some people because of course a performance is supposed to also include vocals. and now, if groups were to start making easier choreos in order to perform completely live, people will have something negative to say too. i think that’s why encore stages for the group that get music show wins are important, it lets them show the actually pull off the vocals, and also, certain groups upload behind the scenes of when they are recording the songs, for example nct and svt (i have seen other groups but i can’t recall) so, that’s another way to check their actual abilities.
in MY opinion (you’re entitled to yours) i don’t mind when idols or anyone really that performs, lip sync, as long as they have proven in some sort of way that they can do it without help.
Some singers who rarely lipsync I can tell include Demi Lovato, Kelly Clarkson and Taylor Swift.

I liked that little mix was present on this video, and I wanna give a thought to it haha. Little mix did a tour to their second disc "The Salute Tour", this tour was mostly 80% prerecorded vocals, BUUUUUUUUT, i wanted to point that even with pre-recorded vocals it was a really impressive vocal oriented show, like vocals were their main character. They made different arrangements, new harmonies, new sections, note changes, u can really see a really big effort put into giving the audience a full live experience and giving space to showcase their abilities as individuals and as a group. I wanted to talk about this cuz, just like u said, sometimes doing playback to a pre-recorded vocal its really judged and seen as the easy way, but its not the case at all with little mix, its like i can't imagine their fans getting disappointed or upset at the show when they maybe notice that its pre-recorded vocals, cuz it still has that surprising and fresh sound and feeling that u expect to get on live shows and not get something u can hear on Spotify or a CD. So yeah, don't come for my girls!! I know that it wasn't the case with u and ur video but i wanted to take it as a opportunity to correct the people out there hahaha (sorry for my English)
Pink is just amazing.
this is honestly so cool! I never thought about a lot of different things you have mentioned here but it definitely makes sense
I’m a Mixer and all Mixers and other people know how talented Little Mix are and when they sing their acoustic versions too But I’m just Proud being a Mixer❤️
Kpop industry has their own ways to go by it which I think fits the conversation. Instead of lipsync (which not saying that kpop artists don't do at all) they use obvious sounding backing tracks during their dance breaks or sing on top of those tracks and the fans know those parts of the song won't be sung live.
maybe western artist don't do these because they don't have a very heavy choreography? or their fans has a different standards compare to us kpop stans
@@yujin4038 why are u so passive aggressive for? They’re just saying.
@@cheerupbaby7792 girl i'm not being aggressive lol i'm just saying the difference between western and kpop audience :)
@@yujin4038 for sure, to me i prefer the kpop way, like the examples with itzy in the video, you can hear theres a backing track but you can clearly hear when they sing live. most of western artists do very little of any choreo so i would not give them a pass with similar amount of backing track. im sure the standards are different in a way bc there is no choreo so ofc you expect more. the same way i expect more from kpop idols if there is a slow song or they dont even have choreo.
6:56 STAN ITZY they have one of the hardest choreographys in kpop yet they still try to sing live time to time these girls are legendary 😩😌💅
This really helped me understand why it's hard to tell sometimes if an artist is lip syncing. I always look for it during live performances and can tell if it's just straight lip syncing to the track or if they're singing over a backing track but I didn't know about the prerecorded vocals and using them for different parts of the song and then live singing to other parts. I do think lip syncing over the original track is lazy and I would much rather hear bad vocals than a 100% fake performance.
This was a great video. A few years ago whilst I was at university studying a music vocals degree I did a whole project based on lip syncing, and it was cool to see some of those points bought up here!
But also interesting were some things that weren’t here! Like hiding when lip syncing, or when they don’t actually lip sync a performance but tv shows put the track over the top when it’s broadcast anyway.
There is such a taboo around lip sync and like you said, when used in the right way- for important moments, then of course! I only feel an issue when it’s used to sell something that truly isn’t real.
Great video.
I will always have immense respect for itzy. They are killing it

Great video as usual. You have an amazing ear when distinguishing between pre-recorded vocals, The studio track, As well as singing along to a track.
Thank you!😄
I can't imagine your effort analyzing all of this great content as usual.
It was 10 years ago, but Gaga's BTW performance at the Grammys is still one of my fave non-lipped performances by a pop star. She wasn't mentioned here, but I can probably count on one hand all the times I've seen a lipped performance from her.
The singing and dancing part is definitely true, one of my favorite artists is tinashe and she’s both an excellent vocalist and hands one of the top 3 best dancers in western pop music (along with teyana taylor and Normani) and she know how to be able to sing well and dance well when performing live. Look at her Conan performance of all hands on deck
Or the entire 333 virtual show! She is unbelievable...
Black women are so talented. 😩
that performance was AMAZING, she killed it omg
She's incredible however I do remember watching a particular late night performance she did where she performed 2 On that was very clearly a lipped pre-recorded version because she was dancing her ass off and her vocals sounded nearly perfect, never out of breath. She really dances so hard tho so it's necessary
@@rightwhereyouleftme__ right I’m not saying she’s 100% singing live all the time but just wanted to point that’s more to her time she’s singing and dancing live
I have so much respect for ITZY being a dance oriented group but singing live more than their peers.
Now let me tell you something: i love what you're doing, boy! Your edition, the examples, the acknowledge... You're doing a great job, hope you fell content with the chanel, you have reasons to it😊 Love from Brazil🇧🇷♥️
Omg thank you so much for this. I recently watched Olivia Rodrigo's Good 4 You performance in an award show (I think Grammy's but I'm not sure lol) and she was breathing heavily by the end of the performance. It's so easy to think that she's simply a weak singer compared to other, more experienced vocalists but honestly if I was jumping around as much as she was, my singing quality probably would have been half as great as hers was. Your video validated what I was thinking, and it made me respect Olivia that much more as an artist for daring to sing live (though I wonder if she also executed the same half lip-synced, half-live performance that most singers do or if she went live all the way? I don't have the ear for these types of things unfortunately)
women are INSANE!!!!! absolute legends in this vid, all of them !
Omg didn’t expect to find ITZY here! I appreciate so much that they keep singing live. One of the few 4th gen K-pop acts to sing live consistently, despite their crazy choreos
Oh I LOVE ITZY, plus Yeji has been by bias as of lately:)
@@aintnootherfan ayyy yeji stan I knew you were a real one ! 👌
I dont think Itzy sing live bcoz i have heard them in encore stage they were basically shouting and the fact only lia can sing decently
This is why Itzy needs more recognition
They're recognized for singing live, but I've noticed that Lia is an overhead vocalist.
Only Lia is avg in singing
I hate how people forget that Katy Perry never lip-syncs and people instead of respecting that, they take advantage of it and call her a bad singer while she was always a great singer, an she imoroved so much she is a vocalist now, she always puts on an energetic show and ofc her vocals can be shaky plus she rarely dodges high notes and she still manages to hit them
BUT, there is one time i think she lipped was on NRJ awards when she sang Roar but i heard her live vocals so idk
people call katy a bad singer (which admittedly she can be) when ever she sings live, no matter how good or bad her voice is cuz they’re used to lip synced and over produced “live” vocals from other performers too. a real live vocal in a big budget stage production is never going to sound good or as good as what the singer is capable of singing at
One time someone put the wrong track, with the vocals in it. They stopped the music and Katy started from the top with the right one. I don't remember if it happened on this awards lol
"never" is a brave word
@@graysang5386 it is right
Me, a huge Harmonizer, totally unsurprised by 5H being the first example lol
I think we can all agree that this is not an area *Mariah* excels in.
Sure, she lip-syncs... but for some reason she is quite bad at it. Probably the worst I've seen thus far.
It seems like she started being bad at lip syinc after daydream era
Yes you can always tell when she’s Lip syncing
yess she tries to hard or focus on looking pretty
@@joaopedro-zm7dy she only started lipsync in daydream.
@@takemyhand1988 that's the funny thing
I like that you said that lip-syncing is a tool that can be used for good or bad.
Honestly I’ve never been against lip syncing and I never understood why ppl hate it so much. We already know these artists can sing great, they should be able to lip sync while performing. It’s hardwork to dance and sing at the same time.
Loved this!!! You said everything that needed to be said! I swear the amount of times people have said someone is singing live because yOu cAn hEaR tHeiR bReAThs omg.
Also periodt for using Itzy and Blackpink, my live singing queens 💕
I really like your very unbiased and fact-based approach for each of these videos. Maybe you would enjoy making a video about not so well known vocalists? For example Daneliya Tuleshova (she has a ton of covers and performances on talent shows on RUclips)? I would really fancy hearing your well researched opinion on her, it would be really interesting!! Keep the good stuff up :)
Morissette is one of those singer who doesnt know how to lipped even if her voice is tired or not in a good shape or even she is Dancing in a hard choreography she never attempt, That was also the reason why i really stan her she is a hardworking artist :)
stan the queen!

6: This is why Music Bank is my favourite Korean music show/program to watch artists perform on, because 9/10 they are actually preforming live, which is very refreshing to hear considering the K-pop industry's overuse of pre-recorded vocals.
actually music bank is also pre-recorded. they perform prior to it because it is not a live perfomance for tv, so it’s done that way to avoid mistakes and failed vocals
@@jujuliliath nah. that’s really just an SM ent thing lmao. most singers on music bank are obviously singing live.
@@horizonkyun7203 very rarely, they will sing over the pre-recorded vocals. but is never ever 100% live with no autotune correction or a backtrack
@@jujuliliath I probaby used the wrong terminology however, I am referring to their vocals. We can actual hear idols singing on Music bank and the background track is not louder than or overtaking their actual singing.
@@kanyin.f4488 music bank is very clearly pre-recorded vocals or edited just like very other show
Also, especially with the pandemic, artists have a good amount of time to make their performance look perfect. If in a performance there are close ups and right after a shot from far away and you can't see any other cameras, or if the singer somehow always manages to be looking at the camera even if it's different angles, that's usually a sign the performance was recorded multiple times and editors picked the best parts to put together, making it not live either. This is especially common in kpop comeback stages, in which artists record their performances multiple times and use pre recorded vocals then in later weeks it's a one-shot with live vocals.
The video is great and very informative!
Also, what I think should be mentioned more frequently when it comes to lipsync, is that artists can't always choose whether or not they want to lipsyinc during a performance (especially at awardshows etc). It's the organiser.
At huge shows where multiple artists are performing it might even be impossible for the organiser to keep track of all microphones and use lipsync instead
6:07 that was the way hurricane trained for Loco loco. And in the end their vocals were so stable in eurovision

Artist like little mix who do full on choreography and dance breaks when they perform and have a lot of high notes in their songs. I can understand lip singing especially on tours when ur constantly singing with only short breaks from performances. Or if there on tour and sick. If they were to not lip sing their vocal cords would be severely damaged. Like for example during little mixes LM5 tour jade usual lip singing count is 18 but due to her having a throat infection she couldn't sing a lot of the songs and notes full out. So in order to heal properly and not damage her vocal cords she lip singed. Lip singing isn't a bad thing but if you're going to deny it and lie to your fans then it's a problem also if you just never actually sing live.
Thank you for this great video.
EVERY ARTIST DOES IT. They have good days and bad, also some venues don’t support live singing also being on tour singing every night WILL affect your voice. Good technique or not.
Most singers will lipsync when they have a lot of dancing involved in their performances but will sing live when not moving so much and those saying that Adele never does lipsync remember 99.9 % of the time she doesn't even move 😜
I mean there’s others that don’t move and still lip
Leigh-Anne’s Sweet Melody for Little Mix: The Search seems to be live as the “melodies” part is pronounced differently
I'm glad this video popped up on my recommendation. This video is very informative and I agree, I wish that the artist would actually sing live since that's what the audiences paid for.
I'm so happy that you include ITZY❤️
Regarding the Itzy performances where you say "you can even hear the sound the outfit makes!" I'm sorry to tell you but kpop artists pre recorded vocals usually include these secondary noises such as accessories blinging and even eventual clapping that might be included the choreography lmao the only real indicator a kpop group is singing live is when the dancing is more toned down than usual
Another great video u never disappoint man
If the choreo is simpler, you hear the breaths and the vocals are a bit shakier, it’s probably live. When they’re doing crazy choreo and someone goes “but you hear breaths!” I just roll my eyes. There’s no actual way. I can understand lip synching when there is complex choreo or if the performer has been touring or needs vocal rest. There is so much pressure on performers, especially female performers.
Well put together, thank you for educating the People.
im literally so fucking impressed how good itzy can sound when singing live dancing to one of the hardest kpop choreographies to ever exist. theyre so talented and hard working. so proud of them they amaze me.
Tori Kelly queen of never lipsyncing or dodging low notes 😩🙌 And you know she’s always singing live because every performance of the same song sounds different from the one before with her coming up with different riffs and runs on the spot and messing up lyrics all the time 🤭
She does lip sync on Macy's Christmas Parade in 2017 or 2018
@@Sammy-jh6fz That was not her choice, every performer for the Macy’s Parade are required to lipsync. The whole event has never had live singing for performers on the floats.
@@chikoritaleaf but she has lip synced, tons of artists don’t want to lip synch and are forced to
@@audreyf9092 You’re comparing her lipsyncing during an event that mandates all performers to lipsync versus singers shown in this video CHOOSING to lipsync during one-off performances and tours. It’s not even remotely the same thing.
plenty of artists switch up notes and mess up lyrics, she is not the only one out here not lipsyncing. she doesn't, but when it comes to switching up notes, that can just be a pre-recorded track, so it's not always the best way to tell if someone isn't lipsyncing.

Tori Kelly never lip syncs and does all her crazy vocal acrobatics while accompanying herself on guitar. A beast.
Edit: People in the replies dense af talking about how she doesn’t dance. No shit. I know she makes it look effortless, but playing an instrument skillfully and singing, ESPECIALLY her style of singing her vocally-demanding songs, is so so difficult and she hardly gets any praise for that. Watch her perform Don’t You Worry Bout A Thing, which she deems her most vocally-challenging song, WHILE playing complicated guitar chords. Most people can’t even sing her rendition as it is, let alone while killing it on guitar. She has performed that song while noticeably sick, and didn’t lipsync either.
i've never seen her dance on stage...not really comparable to most artists in this video, who do whole acrobatics on stage

I personally don't think ari lipped some of the giaw at the ama's. like she def could have but i think they just added some effects to the mic during pre/chorus
@Anne Day Nah I've Seen that performance over and over and it doesn't look like she lipped it also bc some notes were "pitchy". Them again the climax was live and that's all i really care about
@Anne Day ik but all I'm saying is that the performance genuinely looks live, yes there is a back track too but also bc after 2015 she stopped lipping apart from some whistles in the swt then again she is an amazing singer so even if she did i wouldn't care anyway

i’m glad you included kpop videos in this too, kpop is getting way too used to prerecorded performances & fans are starting to not tell what live vocals are anymore :(
my ideal choreo w/ singing situation is the perry one. pull through with the choreo when you don't need to sing, but wind down the intensity so your vocals don't falter too much when necessary. conserving your energy (and not rolling around and jumping while acting like you're singing with perfect vocals) is vital imo
Little mix are queens when it comes to vocals and harmonies and stage presence.
They just kill it
I think Tinashe usually does live vocals, like you can hear when she struggles with certain notes but she still gives insane performances. You should make a video on her btw bc her vocal ability is great.
As a fan of kpop jpop and c pop I constantly see people lip syncing. That and the plethora of western artists that also lip their vocals it have become pretty easy to point them out. Love that you covered this topic.
Great vid. Wish you showed Cheryl's MULTIPLE pre-recorded vocals for 'Fight For This Love'. She's had soooo many. Even though - she was still lipsyncing - she still put in the effort to make sure all vocals were re-recorded.
