This argument is so stupid tbh. Technique doesn’t mean just singing powerfully, it just means being able to sing without causing any damage to your vocal chords. With a solid technique you should be able to sing softly, heavy, and everything in between. So when y’all say technique doesn’t matter do y’all want ur faves to be struggling all the time? I would rather my fave to actually be able to a hold a note......

    • @Ignasimp

Having proper and healthy technique means you can project your voice without constriction. That gives you the freedom to sing soft if you need to. Singing breathy is bad for the voice, and not being able to produce a big sound means there are constriction that don't let the vocal folds vibrate freely and the air get's stuck or is leeked through.

For example Billie might not write a melody like Ocean Eyes or Party’s Over nowadays because she doesn’t think she can hit those high/low notes comfortably/consistently live. Even Patti has had formal training, she didn’t rely on raw skill.

you guys need to stop being toxic, there's a difference between an artist and singer, an artist can be a lot of things, such as a songwriter, a performer, a producer, an actor, etc, a singer is someone who has a style of voice and knows how to sing notes, of course there are mediocre singers who just stick with their bad technique and don´t care about improving, if your fav singer is like that don´t feel attacked bc it´s not your fault but if you do don´t attack others who just say the truth, singing is not easy and there are people who really want to improve and have vocal agility, so stop being toxic!!! please:)

Sometimes her songs can be showy and she has talked about that but why albums like Daydream and Butterfly worked so well is because the runs she has in those songs are subtle, yet packed. Aye, Emotions has high notes because she’s singing about someone make her feel high, Honey has loads of runs, because Honey is smooth and *runny*, and We Belong Together has that climax because she is screaming out desperation for him to “come back”. Fly Like A Bird also does some of these things as well.
Btw, I don’t think that makes Taylor Swift inherently a bad writer either, although her lyrics is the only thing that gives her any artist cred for me. On the flip side not everyone is into big belting and songs where you would lose your voice trying to sing along to.

I love both of their music but it's no denying that Tori has the upper hand in terms of vocal technique (there's actually a video of Billie complimenting Tori's voice in an interview). Tori's also very truthful with how she writes her songs. Now, what I love about Billie is her unique sound of her music that have had a huge impact in the music industry rn (well, even Tori is covering her music, it shows). She's also a great songwriter. @@averyy6681 Tori's guitar was actually tuned half step down, so it was lower than Billie's. Even with the same key, Tori can still be able to hit those notes more effortless than Billie's.
And also, actually, both are using falsettos. You will know it because both did sound so thin and airy. Head voice on the other hand sounds much fuller and thick.
The problem with what Billie did was she was pushing or squeezing her throat for projecting those falsettos. Don't get me wrong, Tori's doing it too; it's just less tensed than Billie's.
Tori's falsetto and head voice isn't actually her forte or known for her singing. While she can do whistle very decently, her head voice tend to be the weakest part of her voice. It's not a let down though because she still has great lows despite being a light-lyric soprano, she also has a very developed mixed belt, and don't even get me started with her runs/riffs/melisma.
Going back with Billie, again, she's still so young, she just needs a coach to help her take care of her voice.

Billie also has nice runs she actually has shown a lot but in different performances, times and videos. I doubt billie would actually get a vocal coach, she said her self "A want to be seen as a visual artist and not a vocal artist." That's why she holds back a lot and I wish she actually showed what she's hiding cs she's teased us in her harmonies and background vocals. Also billie's dad said she used to sing in whistle register when she was 13 for fun. So it's obvious she has potential. Also imo tori kinda over did it with the runs, her music doesn't do it for me, but as a vocalist she's amazing. I also checked and it still was an F3 billie hit an e3 that still is there, not completely inaudible but if she wasn't sick idk what happened in that performance.

@@averyy6681 Ok why am I getting an angry vibe here? You don't have to get so defensive as I am also aware of what Billie can do. Again I'm a fan of them both, not just Tori.
I said in the last statement that she just needs a coach, but I know that she doesn't want to and she even mocks vocal coaches who reacted to her voice. In fact, she's aware that she is not a vocalist. That is what I love about her. She isn't here as a vocalist. She's a true artist and that was her point in creating music from the start after all. She doesn't filter and usually very vocal about certain issues.
Tori on the other hand is not just about her vocals too. She has decent songwriting skills and not some generic pop lyrics, but I am aware that her music is not everyone's cup of tea as music taste is subjective. That is why Billie is more popular right now because of how "experimental" her sound is.
Although, I still stand that both of them are using falsettos though.

Your absolutely right great trained vocalists are truly amazing as their voice can carry any style of singing with relative ease. They have the power to pierce the heart of the listener with their phenomenal skill. They need to be appreciated more for the time they've spent to hone their voice into a invincible weapon.
But great stylistic singers also deserve the appreciation as creating a unique stylized voice that can carve a place in many people's minds & hearts needs a hell of a lot of creativity and work as well!
So both trained vocalists & stylistic singers are amazing for totally different reasons so there's no comparing & putting one above the other!
In today's scenario to achieve success both needs to work have in hand as there are a lot of competition just one thing won't cut it🤷! Especially because there are a large number of good popular trained singers but popular stylistic singers are relatively few! Stylistic singers are a relative new happening compared to trained singers so I feel that's why they seem to be trending now!

Noooo not really, listening to a bad singer won’t affect your health in anyway. Singing is about preference and sometimes people just prefer certain voices to others. I feel like people need to get over this obsession with doing things the ‘right way’. Skill is subjective, if a singer wants to use their voice in a unique way that doesn’t cause themselves harm then I don’t see the issue. People can use their voice however they want, it’s their art.

And as someone who teaches, you’re absolutely incorrect about technique, there IS a correct way to do things. Now that means something different from student to student. I absolutely support keeping ones uniqueness, but singing well and correctly is still necessary. I’ve seen many a student copy someone with improper technique and like any form of imitation, they pick up those bad habits. If your prefer one voice over another, that’s fine by that is entirely separate from skill level which is quite objective.

Some artists really rely on their style and tone to a point where their techniques begin to decline , in order to keep a healthy voice and better performances they need technique, cuz those techniques can apply to every style and help them improve while staying in their own styles , without the skeleton/foundation and the base you can’t really build a strong/durable building no matter what shape that building is or what it is for

i'm a dancer and this reminds me of the same debate but with dance. i think people just simply don't understand that great technique makes you MORE able to make interesting artistic choices and express yourself more effectively. someone with great technique can always choose to make their voice sound light and airy or full and bright or whatever they want to do stylistically. you're able to do such cool runs and have a larger comfortable range you don't have to strain for. you literally have more options at your disposal to artistically express yourself. but people are somehow convinced that having good technique or trying to develop your technique is completely at odds with artistic expression and improving your technique will make you lose your creativity, when this is literally just not true. yeah, pop singers don't NEED to have solid technique like opera singers or musical theatre performers but all having good technique does is make your life easier, make your voice healthier, and open up even more options for artistic expression to you

THANK YOU!! This is a conversation and topic that fans should be able to discuss.
There’s IS such a thing as objectivity when it comes to technique/abilities. Personal taste/style is a separate issue, however, the two may not necessarily be mutually exclusive. Technique most certainly can open the doors for artists to adopt multiple different tones and sounds and do them safely without long term consequences (ex. Hard rock distortion). Technique expands your abilities and choices .... it doesn’t limit them! Also two things can also be true at once... something can sound nice stylistically or be someone’s cool signature sound - and not be technically great if performed unhealthily. Its exhausting hearing people only make excuses for singers all the time (age, lip-synch, style, etc). If you take care of your voice properly you can sing amazingly forever!
I’m so glad you make videos on topics like this. Stay strong in your convictions!

Not every singer that has good technique necessarily WORKED on it. Some people are just born with the talent. You think Grace Wandervall took voice lessons since she was 2??
Some are born with amazing strong voice, some with a better capacity to belt, some with a great head register, some with an outstanding ability to do riffs and runs. Different people hit the ceiling at different levels. Just because someone's 'ceiling' of capacity of "technique" is lower than the other doesn't necessarily mean they aren't working on their voice enough or frequently enough. That's just maybe how far their instrument goes. Doesn't make them a lesser singer.

Somehow Tori's excellent control (she's great) doesn't portray the same feeling.
In contrast, fragility of Selena's vocals just makes her sound weak, bc her songs usually need actual vocal power.
    I hope I made sense

Mariah Carey, Beyonce are just some of the prime example when great timbre and technique collide. The thing with untechnical singers, I always feel anxiety whether or not they can hit the tricky part of the songs, or are they going to lipsync. There are many technically flawed singers who I believe choose to ignore the technical aspect for stylistic purposes, it doesn't mean they don't know how to sing, they just prefer to ignore it (which is actually unhealthy). Some at the top of my mind are Christina Aguillera, Adele, Park Bom. You know they are technically flawed but you just can't help but loving their timbre.

Using a proper Vocal Technique allows vocalists to understand their instrument and utilize it in the most artistic, creative and emotive way possible.

For me, it kind of feels like a top model stopping after every step on the catwalk to shout "hey, you see how slim my waist is? How 'bout my thighs? Did you notice it? Look at my shiny hair!".

We consider physical fitness but just because we can’t see those vocal cords and muscles, doesn’t mean they don’t require working out. As a person paying to see someone perform, especially those who are earning a significant amount, I wouldn’t pay to see someone who doesn’t put the work into essentially what they do for a living. Each members have unique tone, vocal color, etc they sound great when they sing as solo artists but when they sing together woah they sound even better. They sound hella great live than their studio versions.
