twice did too.. before momo started recievng an unheathy amout of hate after moreand more i guess.. but they did sing live in i cant stop me era too.. but recently tey have stopped edit: aparrently they are still singing live!!!! but not often because of the same reason i guess.

Probably because when they do lip they tend to be bad at it. 😅 I did appreciate the Moonbyul love with the clips. She’s improved massively recently with the newfound confidence she has, both vocally and from a stage presence standpoint.
I care about live singing very much. For mainly 2 reasons: 1. it's unfair to both the dancers and the vocalists in the group if they always lip sync. Dancers always have to perform with full energy because they need to dance live and were expected to dance better, while vocalists were expected less because dancing is not their expertise. Vocalists don't get to sing their songs as much, which means they don't get to practice their confidence, showcase their vocal skills, and perfect their artistry. When they finally get to sing live, if they make mistakes, people start to question their skills because that's the only material they have. 2. Live performances are just more fun. Live singing allows singer to showcase different interpretation of songs. Every live performance is different. Singers get to experiment and play with the same line. You get to hear different runs, phrasing, emotion, and even mistakes. And because of that, live audience would have different reaction, with different reaction artists may deliver different details. Good live performance is extremely entertaining to watch, because not a single one of them is the same. But right now a lot of KPOP lip sync performances are just same backtrack with different cloths, sometimes a little variation on certain dance moves. It's SOOOOO boring. Moreover, I hate people say idols cannot always perform live because they are tired or that could damage their voice, musical actors and actresses have to perform 2 shows a day, 8 shows a week, and each show is usually 2 hours long. No one complains. With all that said, I do think KPOP choreography in recent years are getting ridiculous. Some of the choreos were not choreographed with live singing in mind. How could anyone expect people to jump and rotate your head up and down and hold a long note steadily at the same time??? I really hope companies can use choreos that makes more sense to sing live. otherwise may as well just form dance groups instead of singing groups. No one care if they can sing anyways.
Oh yeah this comment!!!!!! Especially the last two paragraph!!!!! With musical actors, we know they have way more advanced vocal technique thus making them able to do that amount of shows a week. Which should be a sign for these idol to get MORE vocal lessons if they care enough about their singing. And second yes! Choreos got crazier with time and seems like they don't considered they have to do it while also singing at the same time. Beyonce is an excellent example for these perfomers on how to still have a choreo but also sing live! Idk why nobody seem to bother taking notes from her.
I have to say that even tho i enjoy live vocals i also love crazy performances so sometimes i don’t mind if the group isn’t singing live. That’s why there are vocal based and performance based groups. And if the group mainly focuses on vocals their choreos aren’t as crazy as others in most cases
@@yngbokkari I think you didn't understand what I mean. I don't mean the choreography should not be intense, but simply take live vocal in consideration when choreographing. For example, belting usually requires singer to have a straighter posture, don't let them belt and pop their chest or bend over their body at the same time; holding longer notes are easier to achieve when you are not jumping up and down and out of breath. For shorter line and the dance breaks the choreography can get as intense as you want. Or if the dance moves has to be intense all the time, have a song with shorter lines that allow singer the breath in between lines and moves. Good example is itsy, they sing live all the time with intense choreo. They are able to do so because the choreo rarely contradict their vocal.
Soyeon is always so easy to notice that she is singing live because she usually sings in a ocmpletly different tone of the backtracking and usually louder so we can hear her and she usually also stops singing at all in some parts where the backtrack continues. Not giving a shit about pretending to sing live. She's awesome *respect* 😎
as a dreamcatcher fan, watching fancams since debut from music show to busking to festival to radio show to concert clips, I have mastered the part they're singing live, and up until now they never disappoint. Idols need to breathe too 😅, but I'm really enjoying how dreamcatcher perform because of how great they deliver their song while singing live, I love the raw vocals 😅

Like obviously when the choreo is harder, they let the backtrack play a little but they always try to keep up and finish their lines. I admire them so much for that! ❤
I saw them live during their tour last year and their vocals are NO JOKE. It was a pretty small venue so could hear them very well. They joked around and imitated each other singing during the audience interaction portions and you could tell they’re all great singers.
The first point is something that Kpop fans should know. They overrate "stable" singing as if it's what makes a good singer/vocalist. "Stable" singer doesn't always mean great vocalist. All it means is they can sing while dancing but not necessarily always with good technique.
I used to be TERRIBLE at doing this but I've gotten a lot better. It's easier than most people think. Lpped vocals are usually really loud and can normally be heard over a large crowd. They could also sound autotuned/pitch-corrected (for those who have good musical ears). Determining whether a vocal is lipped or live also depends on the mouth movements and mic technique of the singer in question... if he/she is moving the mic away but there is no change in volume, or if his/her mouth movements don't match with the track, it's very clear that the singer is lipsyncing. Frankly speaking, I don't think mouth movements are visible if you use fancams lol so I guess you can only judge from the mic technique and mic distance. "How much do you care of live vocal?". I used to not care much about it, until Itzy & Nmixx debuted. I was so used watching performances with perfect vocals (lipsync) and when they start singing live while performing, it makes me realize it is possible to sing while dancing. Sure, the vocals won't be perfect but you can see how much effort they put in their dancing & singing. Both groups have pretty hard choreography but they still slay anyway
I want to highlight the stayc girls, their songs are on high notes, and they have sung without a track, or autotune while dancing. To be a new group is so remarkable
I guess we all can agree that Mamamoo is the queen for live-singing, followed by Dreamcather. The other groups are more like partially live-singing(?)... I mean they do sing live on some parts and rely more on the backtrack. (nooffense)
Personally, I feel disappointed watching a supposed 'live' performance with no live vocals at all, but it also depends on how justified the artist is in lip-syncing in that situation. Are they in a vulnerable vocal condition? Do they have to do intense choreography? Do they have to sing an extremely hard song that'll tear their voice apart if they do it in every show? In these situations, I completely understand the use of playback. I also don't mind performers singing on top of a loud backtrack in some parts and pausing in others because they have to dance at the same time. However, if you literally just have to stand still in front of a microphone and sing, it irks me quite a bit. Especially if you straight up use the studio version or a heavily edited pre-recording. If you're feeling too anxious about performing live, I'd say use a pre-recorded track with minimal to no editing, at least I know that that's how your voice actually sounds.

Nmixx is a monster group when it comes to vocals but yes, their choreos are far too complicated sometimes. I love Twice but rarely do members who are not part of the vocal ling sing live. Jeongyeon slays. Say something about Blackpink and Itzy's inferior vocals but they always sing live (of course there are also exceptions). Mamamoo members are also allergic to lipsync. Aespa almost always lips but I feel like Winter wants to sing live every time that's why she looks so bored. She looks happier when she's singing live. Red Velvet's Wendy and Seulgi are hard to spot.

Dreamcatcher have to use backtrack for their intense songs because their choreography is insane. Saw them live and they can definitely sing but songs liek red Sun were mostly lipped because of the insane dancing. But they sang other songs a lot more

I care a lot about live singing and I love mamamoo for always turning on their mics. Even is they do have a loud back track they always try to overpower is. You always see those neck muscles and being powerful. But they are at the same time really smart when they let the backing track help them.
I strongly care about live vocals. I love to hear imperfections when I'm watching a supposed live performance. That's why I do prefer simple choreos like in the past, which allowed to sing live like SHINee's choreos. That's why I don't understand why SM director won't allow his idols to sing live anymore, like, they have shown they can do it before (SHINee, Red velvet, etc). I'm not asking to make them sing live all the time, I do think that if they have proven they can do it, they deserve some break at times, like you know, right from antiquity 😂
I grew up watching Michael Jackson concerts on RUclips and I always admired how he sang and danced live so that really set the bar when I was watching other artists perform. He made me admire other artists with strong vocals that can also dance for a long time

Pre-recorded kpop vocals are crazy these days, they'll layer it over a backing track so 'they MUST be singing', they'll add in mic sounds like explosive 'p' sounds to make it seem live, and even add pre-rehearsed pauses to make it seem like they naturally took a break in singing
Live singing is very important to me. As much as I love their personalities off stage or their other charms on stage, dance rap or singing whichever speciality anyone has, it should be necessary to improve your stamina and perform your songs live as much as possible. Backtrack do helps, and I have no problem with that. Also some parts with falsettos, they are very hard to control and I have exemptions when analyzing these parts. Some idols lipsync falsettos or do not lip sync the parts at all (dance or gesture it off to show that the part isnt live), and could do the other parts live. This could also apply to fxs (chromatic auto-tune parts, robot parts, distorting voices) However high notes, esp if you have a main vocal position, should be done live and clear. I could like a group and support them, but I could personally only stan those who can master their craft and put as much passion on stage. I really appreciate others who do entertaining adlibs, too
For me, it's all about how necessary (so to speak) it is and how much it affects the performance. Like, if you're dancing your ass off (as Twice, for example, usually is), then it's kind of a dick move for me to point out that you're lipsyncing. In my opinion, at least. I also think we need to take into account the performance philosophy of the artist when having these conversations. For instance, I do not give a shit that EXO Kai lipsyncs 90% of his performances, because he has made it clear that he is a visual artist. His focus is giving you a visually captivating performance. On the flip side, if you're performing a ballad or something that doesn't require much movement, you better be singing live. The only time I excuse lipsync in those kinds of perfs is when the vocalist is sick as a dog or they need the vocal rest. But even then, y'all better not be puttin' the CD in and pressing play. Take the vocals from another performance and lipsync to those, kthxbai!! At the end of the day, I think something we all need to keep in mind is that irregardless of if an artist lipsyncs or sings live, the recorded vocals are their own. For the most part, anyway. They had to be performed, at some point. Now, is it more impressive if they can replicate that performance in a live setting?! Ofc it is!! But, for me, it's impressive that they were able to perform the vocals, at all. Perhaps that makes me a little simple, but I've made peace with that.
I respectfully disagree. At the end of the day all of these artists are singers, they should sing live and if the choreo is too demanding then change it, you are a singer not a backup dancer. I understand how lip syncing is necessary sometimes when idols have demanding schedules and have to sing like everyday and it could hurt their voices (although a healthy tecnique could help prevent damaging ur vocal chords) but if u lip sync 90% of ur performances then... idk why even bother being a singer.
They should sing live sometimes. They can tone down their energy when dancing in some performances and focus on singing. Especially if they're not like Nmixx that can basically do backflips on stage while being incredibly stable.

Idol groups have various positions that means its not all about singing. Besides there are many different types of groups some are vocally focussed some are not. Idols do sing live although not always. Even if you have gopd vocal technique , voice will get tired of you are performing live all the time. I don't think it's possible to always perform life but definitely there can be more live performances especially for many groups these days who are talented yet are not allowed to sing live
@@Ww28sbvf I am not saying change the choreo at the last moment i am saying companies should make the choreos thinking about their artists singing live not only for promotions but for tours as well. Yes, idols are “more than singers” but again, the way they make their livelihood and are know for its their music and since most idols don’t play instruments they should be able to carry a tune and do it live. The other aspects of idols groups are also not merely as much work from them as it is from their creative teams and make up/wardrobe teams who create a visual idea of a concept. I completely agree that it is hard to have them sing live ALWAYS but lets look at Mamamoo or most 2nd gen groups for example. They sing live almost always if not always, they have choreos that while sometimes demanding allows them to sing live and they have creative concepts/visuals/main dancers, all of the other things other groups have now and they are able to sing live. I understand that kpop “is more than just the music” since it is a visual art as well but at the end of the day i am listening to their songs more than watching their concepts videos and when i watch a live performance I want to hear them sing live. Many of the 2nd and 3rd Gen have sung live many many times. But these days un the 4th Gen I I we got to se more amazing vocals (excluding nmixx ) I also like itzy they have such challenging choreography they have been seen singing live as well. I wish companies give priority to vocals too because it will benefit their artist
I discovered NMIXX not long after their debut… and soon after discovered they suck at lip-syncing so they rarely do it. If they're not singing live, they don't even try to pretend they are (e.g.: Kyujin's laughing at start & end of "Dice"). That clip where you said Bae was lip-syncing -- I don't think she was, at least not intentionally. They've had more than one show where at least one girl's microphone (head or hand) crapped out partway through.
They are singers first. So live vocal is important. There's no hate here to be honest. But it's natural to dislike something you don't like. And i really like watching them performing with live vocals. Take Mamamoo for instance, you can tell they sing live every time. It's their pride. But i do understand when the dance is intense, they will try to lipsync. It's just i lose interest watching soft choreo n lipsync thru out the song. N this happens to popular groups. I love it when even the dance is hard, they still try to sing with broken vocals. That just shows commitment and dedication as singers and performers. So much respect to these kind of groups (and there are just a few)
honestly i prefer hearing slightly imperfect live vocals than watching a performance where they lipsync all the way through. of course, there are idols who are completely unstable on stage or not very good vocalists and they're often told to lipsync instead (like shuhua from gidle, up until very recently, i think she almost always lipsynced). but it's really a pity when actually skilled vocalists are made to lipsync almost all the time *cough* aespa *cough* . i get that they can't sing 100% live all the time, but their agencies are just inviting more hate by not letting them show their full potential. the reason i stan groups like mamamoo and kard is because it's so clear that they sing live almost all the time (with a few exceptions) and even with groups where not all members are super stable vocalists, there's still a special charm to live performances. it feels more authentic.
sing live or being stable does not make them good vocally, the only ones in stayce that have decent vocal are seuin, yoon(that girl scream mos of the time but has her good moments) and isa, and however all of then are shallow and inconsistent

I think these days Billlie's pre-recorded stages are among the best and trickiest to tell because they actually keep some flaws and the backing track besides the main vocals, like they did during many Ring MA Bell performances where they sounded live although it was easy to spot the same flaws happened at the same exact moments during most stages. I feel like that's something most companies seem to forget when it comes to making their lipped stages sound realistic, so the pre-recorded tracks end up sounding fake because they get rid of backing vocals completely, which they wouldn't during an actual live performance. Then there's ICHILLIN', which are the complete opposite with their pre-recorded tracks usually being autotuned as heck, such as most of their Draw or La Luna performances.
Even when you think you can spot if someone is doing lipsync or live vocals, remember they can also record artists' vocals in rehearsals and have them lipsync over such recordings. With today's technology you can never tell who is actually singing live.
If it's just on some shows, I think I'm okay with lip-sync because I remember Solji(from EXID) said that her lines were too high for her to sing every performance so she decides to lipsync. The thing is, today it's so rare and I feel like it's kind of disrespectful to some of the fans that paid the tickets to watch them "PERFORM" live not just "DANCE" live. This is the reason why NMIXX became my ult gg for 4th gen because man, those live vocals/performances is just something. I can also remember myself repeating Aespa's Coachella performance because despite showing a lot of imperfections, they did well in singing live, and at that point they managed to give their fans who came there respect that they deserve. I think that's just some of my thoughts. I would love it if SM would stop having most, if not all, of their idols lip sync especially in concerts (Some of them sang live in Tokyo SM TOWN but IIRC their perf in SK were mostly lipped). I spoke to someone that went to one of their concerts, he said that they lipsynced the majority of the tracks lol don't know if it's true or not but he stopped being a fan because he was so disappointed

I have no idea what he expected but the girls have to care for their throats. I accidentally got into an argument on Twitter because I said my fave group isn't always singing live and uses backing tracks for their dance numbers. I did not think this was a controversial statement, because I've been listening to them sing for over a decade and I feel like every fan should know the difference between their live vs. recorded vocals. I thought WRONG, though, because apparently this pissed people off. I needed to watch this video to reassure myself I wasn't crazy. Idk how people can't hear the difference! I know sometimes it's more confusing, but generally I think the physical signs are just a giveaway. Like, especially a long, sustained, high notes. You will hear movement and see their neck/facial muscles moving. Idk I needed this video right now.
I actually really love your live/lip sync vids. I just find the topic fascinating because I’m really into music, and everything related to that and performing so, despite some people hating it, if it’s done well and not just because an artist is lazy, I don’t have a problem with it!
Maybe I'm biased because I'm not really into dance, live performance is just way more fun to listen to. Espescially at concert and public event, singing live helps the singer to interract with the audience. 3-4 years ago I'm still actively watch music show performances because I love how they have some and slight difference with music videos. i love imperfections in live performance, group like bigbang and 2ne1 who wasn't really a performance based group still are my favourite performance because they actually enjoyed what they do instead of focusing on dance moves and lost their excitement and personalities in it. I think the over looking on perfections was because of the companies decision themselves and public just went with it. I missed second and third gen outtakes on performances.
For me personally I prefer the artists to sing live rather than executing hard choreography while lip syncing, I just can't enjoy the performance much if they're not singing live (again, it's my personal opinion). And mostly I would listen to the live version rather than the studio version if the artists executed it well (the vocals, the emotions, the delivery, etc).
I only care about live vocals outside of music shows tbh. And if it’s a song where the choreography is center stage, I also don’t care. We have to remember that sometimes they pre-recorded live vocals, so a lot of people sometimes think that they’re singing live but they’re just lipsync the pre-recorded audio thats sounds live…
When an artist is singing live even his face accuses them, because I notice that there is a greater concentration on it going well to look pretty, and as they have to vocalize well it becomes quite noticeable when they are really live. In addition to this singing live (and dancing) the voice will never be heard robotic and perfect while they jump, crouch, run, etc. Commonly when singing live the dance is less energetic and the difficult on dance steps feel light or are even changed.
7:13 the one thing i absolutely hated at the twice concerts (went 5x times) was chaeyoung and jeongyeon’s back track was so loud, they were fighting those backtracks hard and you could hear them trying to
Sometimes idols aren’t trying to “fight” the backtrack but they just are trying belting cause the song is too high for their range or their company taught them strong vocals = yelling into the mic
I totally understand the need for lip synching when you have a jam-packed promotional schedule - it'd simply damage the voice if they had to sing, like, every day, sometimes multiple times, for weeks on end. I just think that when people actually pay a good chunk of money to hear you live in concert, you should at least attempt to sing live as much as possible.
I mean, don’t pop singers perform hours long concerts, sometimes for years long tours? Is singing a song once or twice a day for a few weeks really that intensive?

I think that if I pay for a LIVE concert I want a LIVE concert not someone lipsync all the time. I have nothing against backtracks if you can hear the idol singing but only lipsync is a no go for me.

I quite agree with this video and this is my opinion 1. And what surprises me is that kpop fanatics, especially fans of an idol group, always say "they live blah blah blah, wow... their voices are so beautiful blah blah blah". Group A fans say group B is lip syncing but their own idol group is lip sync. 2. Believe it or not, they are lucky cz they come from South Korea cz South Korea is currently a trend in several countries due to the influence of several government strategies through drama, films, and music. But if I wanna to talk bout their voices as singers when they were on stage, I can say when they were in a country that is famous for having a lot of good singers....they wouldn't be as famous as they are now (except for their looks n beauty). I have no comment on their voices cz if I'm honest and objective, I asked myself "why the majority of them can become pro singers in the music and entertainment industry, cz the way they sing everyone can do". That's why South Korean solo singers (not solo singers from idol groups) are not internationally famous (only a few), even though their solo singers are so much better even when they're doing choreography or doing some treatment on stage. 3. Not all of them (kpop = idol group) lip sync but the majority of kpop (idol groups) is lipsync n only a few of the idol groups n member can actually sing w/ a pretty good voice technique and character. Nowadays, there are many audio tricks that can be done, such as AutoTune Live (singing live but using an autotune tool that can be carried anywhere, so that singing can be very precise in any condition), LMR (singing only at certain times with a stage scenario that has been made. Usually only sing for about 2 - 5 seconds, the rest are not live), Live recording (singing voices are recorded first so they seem like they're actually singing when they live), Live recording + LMR and many more tricks that can be used. for me.... the position of the voice can never change or can never be lied to, even though using advanced technology. The position of the live singer's voice will always be in front of other musical instruments, even though using live recording + LMR techniques. Even if the microphone is turned on the slightest, the position will not change. We can see n hear in various videos of live solo singers for an xample, the position of the voice singers 4. That's what distinguishes their boygroup/femalegroup from the US/UK country. In US/UK, they focus on singing voices. choreography n treatment on stage is number 2, appearance n beauty is number 3. While in South Korea, it focuses on beauty, appearance number 2, dance number 3. As for the singing voice, it is at number 4. 5. I am very anti-lipsynk, but with the advancement of technology... I understand that for some things lipsynk is needed n I understand that it is only for 3 things, which is promotion, field technical n preparation.

Easy No.2 is live, as you poined out for Tzuyu's part later on in the pinned comment, the backtrack is loud. If you listen to an MR Removed version (e.g Lyma's), you can hear their vocals clearly.
Finally someone who understands the difference between smaller and bigger and takes it into consideration. How I hate when people compare twice and BP in choreography when in blackpink each member has to sing longer whiles in twice each each member gets small singing task because of their huge number even with that there isnt any much difference in BP and Twice choreography. Therefore i do understand aespa's situation.

I care about live singing very much. For mainly 2 reasons:
1. it's unfair to both the dancers and the vocalists in the group if they always lip sync. Dancers always have to perform with full energy because they need to dance live and were expected to dance better, while vocalists were expected less because dancing is not their expertise.
Vocalists don't get to sing their songs as much, which means they don't get to practice their confidence, showcase their vocal skills, and perfect their artistry. When they finally get to sing live, if they make mistakes, people start to question their skills because that's the only material they have.
2. Live performances are just more fun. Live singing allows singer to showcase different interpretation of songs. Every live performance is different. Singers get to experiment and play with the same line. You get to hear different runs, phrasing, emotion, and even mistakes. And because of that, live audience would have different reaction, with different reaction artists may deliver different details. Good live performance is extremely entertaining to watch, because not a single one of them is the same.
But right now a lot of KPOP lip sync performances are just same backtrack with different cloths, sometimes a little variation on certain dance moves. It's SOOOOO boring.
Moreover, I hate people say idols cannot always perform live because they are tired or that could damage their voice, musical actors and actresses have to perform 2 shows a day, 8 shows a week, and each show is usually 2 hours long. No one complains.
With all that said, I do think KPOP choreography in recent years are getting ridiculous. Some of the choreos were not choreographed with live singing in mind. How could anyone expect people to jump and rotate your head up and down and hold a long note steadily at the same time??? I really hope companies can use choreos that makes more sense to sing live. otherwise may as well just form dance groups instead of singing groups. No one care if they can sing anyways.

With musical actors, we know they have way more advanced vocal technique thus making them able to do that amount of shows a week. Which should be a sign for these idol to get MORE vocal lessons if they care enough about their singing.
And second yes! Choreos got crazier with time and seems like they don't considered they have to do it while also singing at the same time. Beyonce is an excellent example for these perfomers on how to still have a choreo but also sing live! Idk why nobody seem to bother taking notes from her.

I have to say that even tho i enjoy live vocals i also love crazy performances so sometimes i don’t mind if the group isn’t singing live. That’s why there are vocal based and performance based groups. And if the group mainly focuses on vocals their choreos aren’t as crazy as others in most cases
@@yngbokkari I think you didn't understand what I mean. I don't mean the choreography should not be intense, but simply take live vocal in consideration when choreographing. For example, belting usually requires singer to have a straighter posture, don't let them belt and pop their chest or bend over their body at the same time; holding longer notes are easier to achieve when you are not jumping up and down and out of breath. For shorter line and the dance breaks the choreography can get as intense as you want.
Or if the dance moves has to be intense all the time, have a song with shorter lines that allow singer the breath in between lines and moves.
Good example is itsy, they sing live all the time with intense choreo. They are able to do so because the choreo rarely contradict their vocal.

Soyeon is always so easy to notice that she is singing live because she usually sings in a ocmpletly different tone of the backtracking and usually louder so we can hear her and she usually also stops singing at all in some parts where the backtrack continues. I saw them live during their tour last year and their vocals are NO JOKE. It was a pretty small venue so could hear them very well. They joked around and imitated each other singing during the audience interaction portions and you could tell they’re all great singers.
The first point is something that Kpop fans should know. They overrate "stable" singing as if it's what makes a good singer/vocalist. "Stable" singer doesn't always mean great vocalist. All it means is they can sing while dancing but not necessarily always with good technique.

I used to be TERRIBLE at doing this but I've gotten a lot better. It's easier than most people think. Lpped vocals are usually really loud and can normally be heard over a large crowd. They could also sound autotuned/pitch-corrected (for those who have good musical ears). Determining whether a vocal is lipped or live also depends on the mouth movements and mic technique of the singer in question... if he/she is moving the mic away but there is no change in volume, or if his/her mouth movements don't match with the track, it's very clear that the singer is lipsyncing. Frankly speaking, I don't think mouth movements are visible if you use fancams lol so I guess you can only judge from the mic technique and mic distance.

"How much do you care of live vocal?". I used to not care much about it, until Itzy & Nmixx debuted. I was so used watching performances with perfect vocals (lipsync) and when they start singing live while performing, it makes me realize it is possible to sing while dancing. Sure, the vocals won't be perfect but you can see how much effort they put in their dancing & singing. Both groups have pretty hard choreography but they still slay anyway
I want to highlight the stayc girls, their songs are on high notes, and they have sung without a track, or autotune while dancing. To be a new group is so remarkable
I guess we all can agree that Mamamoo is the queen for live-singing, followed by Dreamcather. The other groups are more like partially live-singing(?)... I mean they do sing live on some parts and rely more on the backtrack. (nooffense)
Personally, I feel disappointed watching a supposed 'live' performance with no live vocals at all, but it also depends on how justified the artist is in lip-syncing in that situation. Are they in a vulnerable vocal condition? Do they have to do intense choreography? Do they have to sing an extremely hard song that'll tear their voice apart if they do it in every show?
In these situations, I completely understand the use of playback. I also don't mind performers singing on top of a loud backtrack in some parts and pausing in others because they have to dance at the same time.
However, if you literally just have to stand still in front of a microphone and sing, it irks me quite a bit. Especially if you straight up use the studio version or a heavily edited pre-recording. If you're feeling too anxious about performing live, I'd say use a pre-recorded track with minimal to no editing, at least I know that that's how your voice actually sounds.
My favourite live kpop moment is ningning during Coachella, her jaw nearly popped from her high notes it was great to watch

Nmixx is a monster group when it comes to vocals but yes, their choreos are far too complicated sometimes. I love Twice but rarely do members who are not part of the vocal ling sing live. Jeongyeon slays. Say something about Blackpink and Itzy's inferior vocals but they always sing live (of course there are also exceptions). Mamamoo members are also allergic to lipsync. Aespa almost always lips but I feel like Winter wants to sing live every time that's why she looks so bored. She looks happier when she's singing live. Red Velvet's Wendy and Seulgi are hard to spot.
NMIXX really need a producer like Soyeon to make their talent shine. I almost only listen to NMIXX’s cover cuz their own songs are not attractive 😢

I care a lot about live singing and I love mamamoo for always turning on their mics. Even is they do have a loud back track they always try to overpower is. You always see those neck muscles and being powerful. But they are at the same time really smart when they let the backing track help them.
They have to go live and serve astounding vocals anyways because that one time in 2015/16. They can't lip-syc for the life of them lmao

I feel like the thing in dreamcatchers choreos is that, while complex, they are made especially with live singing in mind. Same with ITZYs choreos.
I strongly care about live vocals. I love to hear imperfections when I'm watching a supposed live performance. That's why I do prefer simple choreos like in the past, which allowed to sing live like SHINee's choreos.
That's why I don't understand why SM director won't allow his idols to sing live anymore, like, they have shown they can do it before (SHINee, Red velvet, etc). I'm not asking to make them sing live all the time, I do think that if they have proven they can do it, they deserve some break at times, like you know, right from antiquity 😂

Pre-recorded kpop vocals are crazy these days, they'll layer it over a backing track so 'they MUST be singing', they'll add in mic sounds like explosive 'p' sounds to make it seem live, and even add pre-rehearsed pauses to make it seem like they naturally took a break in singing
At that point it takes more effort to lip sync than to actually sing live 😂

Live singing is very important to me. As much as I love their personalities off stage or their other charms on stage, dance rap or singing whichever speciality anyone has, it should be necessary to improve your stamina and perform your songs live as much as possible. Backtrack do helps, and I have no problem with that. Also some parts with falsettos, they are very hard to control and I have exemptions when analyzing these parts. Some idols lipsync falsettos or do not lip sync the parts at all (dance or gesture it off to show that the part isnt live), and could do the other parts live. This could also apply to fxs (chromatic auto-tune parts, robot parts, distorting voices) However high notes, esp if you have a main vocal position, should be done live and clear. I could like a group and support them, but I could personally only stan those who can master their craft and put as much passion on stage. I really appreciate others who do entertaining adlibs, too
For me, it's all about how necessary (so to speak) it is and how much it affects the performance. Like, if you're dancing your ass off (as Twice, for example, usually is), then it's kind of a dick move for me to point out that you're lipsyncing. In my opinion, at least. I also think we need to take into account the performance philosophy of the artist when having these conversations. For instance, I do not give a shit that EXO Kai lipsyncs 90% of his performances, because he has made it clear that he is a visual artist. His focus is giving you a visually captivating performance.
On the flip side, if you're performing a ballad or something that doesn't require much movement, you better be singing live. The only time I excuse lipsync in those kinds of perfs is when the vocalist is sick as a dog or they need the vocal rest. But even then, y'all better not be puttin' the CD in and pressing play. Take the vocals from another performance and lipsync to those, kthxbai!!
At the end of the day, I think something we all need to keep in mind is that irregardless of if an artist lipsyncs or sings live, the recorded vocals are their own. For the most part, anyway. They had to be performed, at some point. Now, is it more impressive if they can replicate that performance in a live setting?! Ofc it is!! But, for me, it's impressive that they were able to perform the vocals, at all. Perhaps that makes me a little simple, but I've made peace with that.
I respectfully disagree. At the end of the day all of these artists are singers, they should sing live and if the choreo is too demanding then change it, you are a singer not a backup dancer. I understand how lip syncing is necessary sometimes when idols have demanding schedules and have to sing like everyday and it could hurt their voices (although a healthy tecnique could help prevent damaging ur vocal chords) but if u lip sync 90% of ur performances then... idk why even bother being a singer.
They should sing live sometimes. They can tone down their energy when dancing in some performances and focus on singing. Especially if they're not like Nmixx that can basically do backflips on stage while being incredibly stable.

Idol groups have various positions that means its not all about singing. Besides there are many different types of groups some are vocally focussed some are not. Idols do sing live although not always. Even if you have gopd vocal technique , voice will get tired of you are performing live all the time. I don't think it's possible to always perform life but definitely there can be more live performances especially for many groups these days who are talented yet are not allowed to sing live

Yes, idols are “more than singers” but again, the way they make their livelihood and are know for its their music and since most idols don’t play instruments they should be able to carry a tune and do it live. The other aspects of idols groups are also not merely as much work from them as it is from their creative teams and make up/wardrobe teams who create a visual idea of a concept. I completely agree that it is hard to have them sing live ALWAYS but lets look at Mamamoo or most 2nd gen groups for example. They sing live almost always if not always, they have choreos that while sometimes demanding allows them to sing live and they have creative concepts/visuals/main dancers, all of the other things other groups have now and they are able to sing live. I understand that kpop “is more than just the music” since it is a visual art as well but at the end of the day i am listening to their songs more than watching their concepts videos and when i watch a live performance I want to hear them sing live. The thing is companies these days care more about visual and dance than vocals because vocals can be faked (sometimes) whereas dance is for everybody to see. Mamamoo is soo talented and they so sing live but again their chores are made while keeping in mind that they sing, they're a vocally foxussed group. Many of the 2nd and 3rd Gen have sung live many many times. But these days un the 4th Gen I I we got to se more amazing vocals (excluding nmixx ) I also like itzy they have such challenging choreography they have been seen singing live as well. I wish companies give priority to vocals too because it will benefit their artist
I discovered NMIXX not long after their debut… and soon after discovered they suck at lip-syncing so they rarely do it.
If they're not singing live, they don't even try to pretend they are (e.g.: Kyujin's laughing at start & end of "Dice").
That clip where you said Bae was lip-syncing -- I don't think she was, at least not intentionally. They've had more than one show where at least one girl's microphone (head or hand) crapped out partway through.

They are singers first. So live vocal is important. There's no hate here to be honest. But it's natural to dislike something you don't like. And i really like watching them performing with live vocals. Take Mamamoo for instance, you can tell they sing live every time. It's their pride. But i do understand when the dance is intense, they will try to lipsync. It's just i lose interest watching soft choreo n lipsync thru out the song. N this happens to popular groups. I love it when even the dance is hard, they still try to sing with broken vocals. That just shows commitment and dedication as singers and performers. So much respect to these kind of groups (and there are just a few)

honestly i prefer hearing slightly imperfect live vocals than watching a performance where they lipsync all the way through. of course, there are idols who are completely unstable on stage or not very good vocalists and they're often told to lipsync instead (like shuhua from gidle, up until very recently, i think she almost always lipsynced).
but it's really a pity when actually skilled vocalists are made to lipsync almost all the time *cough* aespa *cough* . i get that they can't sing 100% live all the time, but their agencies are just inviting more hate by not letting them show their full potential.
the reason i stan groups like mamamoo and kard is because it's so clear that they sing live almost all the time (with a few exceptions) and even with groups where not all members are super stable vocalists, there's still a special charm to live performances. it feels more authentic.

sing live or being stable does not make them good vocally, the only ones in stayce that have decent vocal are seuin, yoon(that girl scream mos of the time but has her good moments) and isa, and however all of then are shallow and inconsistent

I think these days Billlie's pre-recorded stages are among the best and trickiest to tell because they actually keep some flaws and the backing track besides the main vocals, like they did during many Ring MA Bell performances where they sounded live although it was easy to spot the same flaws happened at the same exact moments during most stages. I feel like that's something most companies seem to forget when it comes to making their lipped stages sound realistic, so the pre-recorded tracks end up sounding fake because they get rid of backing vocals completely, which they wouldn't during an actual live performance. Then there's ICHILLIN', which are the complete opposite with their pre-recorded tracks usually being autotuned as heck, such as most of their Draw or La Luna performances.
Even when you think you can spot if someone is doing lipsync or live vocals, remember they can also record artists' vocals in rehearsals and have them lipsync over such recordings. With today's technology you can never tell who is actually singing live.
If it's just on some shows, I think I'm okay with lip-sync because I remember Solji(from EXID) said that her lines were too high for her to sing every performance so she decides to lipsync. The thing is, today it's so rare and I feel like it's kind of disrespectful to some of the fans that paid the tickets to watch them "PERFORM" live not just "DANCE" live. This is the reason why NMIXX became my ult gg for 4th gen because man, those live vocals/performances is just something. I can also remember myself repeating Aespa's Coachella performance because despite showing a lot of imperfections, they did well in singing live, and at that point they managed to give their fans who came there respect that they deserve. I think that's just some of my thoughts. I would love it if SM would stop having most, if not all, of their idols lip sync especially in concerts (Some of them sang live in Tokyo SM TOWN but IIRC their perf in SK were mostly lipped). I accidentally got into an argument on Twitter because I said my fave group isn't always singing live and uses backing tracks for their dance numbers. I did not think this was a controversial statement, because I've been listening to them sing for over a decade and I feel like every fan should know the difference between their live vs. recorded vocals.
I thought WRONG, though, because apparently this pissed people off. I needed to watch this video to reassure myself I wasn't crazy. Idk how people can't hear the difference! I know sometimes it's more confusing, but generally I think the physical signs are just a giveaway. Like, especially a long, sustained, high notes. You will hear movement and see their neck/facial muscles moving. Idk I needed this video right now.

Maybe I'm biased because I'm not really into dance, live performance is just way more fun to listen to. Espescially at concert and public event, singing live helps the singer to interract with the audience. 3-4 years ago I'm still actively watch music show performances because I love how they have some and slight difference with music videos. i love imperfections in live performance, group like bigbang and 2ne1 who wasn't really a performance based group still are my favourite performance because they actually enjoyed what they do instead of focusing on dance moves and lost their excitement and personalities in it. I think the over looking on perfections was because of the companies decision themselves and public just went with it. I missed second and third gen outtakes on performances.
For me personally I prefer the artists to sing live rather than executing hard choreography while lip syncing, I just can't enjoy the performance much if they're not singing live (again, it's my personal opinion). And mostly I would listen to the live version rather than the studio version if the artists executed it well (the vocals, the emotions, the delivery, etc).
I only care about live vocals outside of music shows tbh. And if it’s a song where the choreography is center stage, I also don’t care. Btw, I failed big time lmao what all my faves have shown me outside of music shows is enough for me to be happy.. what other people think doesn’t affect me or my liking of their songs, or performances. Tho most folks fave vocalists are from sm, all of mine are not.. majority are all from smaller companies and not all are well known enough yet! We have to remember that sometimes they pre-recorded live vocals, so a lot of people sometimes think that they’re singing live but they’re just lipsync the pre-recorded audio thats sounds live…
When an artist is singing live even his face accuses them, because I notice that there is a greater concentration on it going well to look pretty, and as they have to vocalize well it becomes quite noticeable when they are really live.
In addition to this singing live (and dancing) the voice will never be heard robotic and perfect while they jump, crouch, run, etc. Commonly when singing live the dance is less energetic and the difficult on dance steps feel light or are even changed.

Sometimes idols aren’t trying to “fight” the backtrack but they just are trying belting cause the song is too high for their range or their company taught them strong vocals = yelling into the mic
I totally understand the need for lip synching when you have a jam-packed promotional schedule - it'd simply damage the voice if they had to sing, like, every day, sometimes multiple times, for weeks on end. I just think that when people actually pay a good chunk of money to hear you live in concert, you should at least attempt to sing live as much as possible.
I mean, don’t pop singers perform hours long concerts, sometimes for years long tours? Is singing a song once or twice a day for a few weeks really that intensive?
@@maddyrevenge it is, idols barely get to sleep all year long bc they have a lot of promotion and have to sing at shows all the time so basically it affects their health and vocals a lot, they do all this while preparing other comebacks, solos rtc.. they dont leave the training sometimes til late whereas in the west its just punctual i think

I quite agree with this video and this is my opinion
1. And what surprises me is that kpop fanatics, especially fans of an idol group, always say "they live blah blah blah, wow... their voices are so beautiful blah blah blah". Group A fans say group B is lip syncing but their own idol group is lip sync.
2. Believe it or not, they are lucky cz they come from South Korea cz South Korea is currently a trend in several countries due to the influence of several government strategies through drama, films, and music.
But if I wanna to talk bout their voices as singers when they were on stage, I can say when they were in a country that is famous for having a lot of good singers....they wouldn't be as famous as they are now (except for their looks n beauty). I have no comment on their voices cz if I'm honest and objective, I asked myself "why the majority of them can become pro singers in the music and entertainment industry, cz the way they sing everyone can do".
That's why South Korean solo singers (not solo singers from idol groups) are not internationally famous (only a few), even though their solo singers are so much better even when they're doing choreography or doing some treatment on stage.
3. Not all of them (kpop = idol group) lip sync but the majority of kpop (idol groups) is lipsync n only a few of the idol groups n member can actually sing w/ a pretty good voice technique and character.
Nowadays, there are many audio tricks that can be done, such as AutoTune Live (singing live but using an autotune tool that can be carried anywhere, so that singing can be very precise in any condition), LMR (singing only at certain times with a stage scenario that has been made. Usually only sing for about 2 - 5 seconds, the rest are not live), Live recording (singing voices are recorded first so they seem like they're actually singing when they live), Live recording + LMR and many more tricks that can be used.
for me.... the position of the voice can never change or can never be lied to, even though using advanced technology. The position of the live singer's voice will always be in front of other musical instruments, even though using live recording + LMR techniques. Even if the microphone is turned on the slightest, the position will not change.
We can see n hear in various videos of live solo singers for an xample, the position of the voice singers
4. That's what distinguishes their boygroup/femalegroup from the US/UK country. In US/UK, they focus on singing voices. choreography n treatment on stage is number 2, appearance n beauty is number 3. While in South Korea, it focuses on beauty, appearance number 2, dance number 3. As for the singing voice, it is at number 4.
5. I am very anti-lipsynk, but with the advancement of technology... I understand that for some things lipsynk is needed n I understand that it is only for 3 things, which is promotion, field technical n preparation.

To explain the 1/2 on hard, they sung Next Level and Black Mamba LIVE but lipped Girls and Illusion. Maybe the sound team just decided to not turn off their mics.

Easy No.2 is live, as you poined out for Tzuyu's part later on in the pinned comment, the backtrack is loud. If you listen to an MR Removed version (e.g Lyma's), you can hear their vocals clearly.
The fact that y all dont accept that all of them are strained, especially in smaller groups where they have to sing more, it's insane to me.
Finally someone who understands the difference between smaller and bigger and takes it into consideration. How I hate when people compare twice and BP in choreography when in blackpink each member has to sing longer whiles in twice each each member gets small singing task because of their huge number even with that there isnt any much difference in BP and Twice choreography. Therefore i do understand aespa's situation.
i've gotten a lot better at this now, its really interesting going back and looking at performances i once thought were live and realising theyre actually lip-synced
