I've read "don't let anyone rent a space in your head unless they are a good tenant". Jocko you and Echo are excellent tenants. As is Joe and Theo. Thank you.

    Great episode! My takeaways:
•balance and discernment are crucial in high stake decision making(decision making in general really)
•timing is everything when deciding when and to what extent to “skew” the rules.
Thanks for continuing to share this content.

I just took away something I overlook often: Assume everything is false, not true by default. Assuming principles or conclusions are true by default can lead us on a path to groupthink and destruction.

In the opening, where you and EC discuss the part of a person getting to a position because of many many good decisions to be in a place where a catastrophic failure is even possible reminded also of the fact that to uninformed observer or individuals who want to take on a leadership role will only see the decisions they consider a mistake or the wrong approach. The dichotomy her is the belief of the newly minted leader that he/she has the skills to do as good or better a job based on the snapshot of the good leaders failure and not seeing the hundred or thousands of decisions that went flawlessly. It’s very eye opening to experience leadership for the first time and learn how good that other leader really was. Like you said about your BBall friend. Made a lot of baskets to get there! PS. Just finished About Face.

With all due respect, as an enlisted man during WW2, Adm. Emerson was most assuredly a Colonel of the Urinal for some period of time and was trained well. He got there from the bottom up and he was a much better man and leader for it. I am positive of this.

I think a lot of the "Navy Principles of War" harken back to lessons learned over hundreds of years of perfecting Naval gunnery and Naval expeditions. You only have so many ships in so many places and getting more isn't a quick thing. So you need to be efficient with your fires (make good decisions on what you yeet your cannon balls at), have better standoff than your opponent and adapt to the unexpected. You never know what is over the horizon, so you can't make rules for it (as long as you stay awake on watch and don't leave without relief). Also, until relatively recently, you can't call back and ask some Admiral for permission or advice. So you go to sea with what you think you'll need and the rules or "principles" are kinda made up on the spot depending on what you find on the other side of the horizon. How this applies in the rest of life is that adaptation is the most critical skill you can have. Be flexible and agile.

I respectfully disagree if you're telling me someone has made it to where they are because of the great decisions those Were not under very stressful conditions so there's a lot of people that could get to that point but they can't handle the major adversity when it comes to critical crunch they buckle under the pressure and that weeds out the week and keeps the strong where they belong I don't care if it's one mistake that mistake is a big mistake and that could cost many of lives and he did not come through because the adversity was so overwhelming whatever he did in the past means nothing he was put in a position where he never was in before and he did not live up to his position there's no excuses no excuses no excuses no excuses you put in that position and it comes time where it's a real critical moment and you fell but you passed 99 of them previously and 99 of them previously wasn't filled with adversity to the highest extent and danger to the highest he buckled and is no excuse for it plain and simple there's no pass especially when lives have been lost you can't judge someone on their his and he never been in the position that he's been and it shows because he didn't make the right decision you could make 99 great decisions because a lot of those 99 decisions are a walk but when it comes down to adversity and danger if you don't have control of your mind you're going to have doubts creeping in and that's what happened with him and he is not a winner he is a average whatever he was he should have never been a leader someone should have picked that out or saw that early there's no excuse for crunch time you come through you don't look at someone's past you look at what they did right then and there then and there what they did in that critical moment and critical is the key word critical was not in those 99 other episodes that he passed this is not something he experienced and should never have been put in the position of being the leader that should have been someone in that group to stand up and say something a lot of people are intimidated the only person you should fear is Jesus Christ this guy I would not want him to be the leader of any of my situations because he fell at the most critical time where he needed to win with all due respect love you guys
