- Bear with me on this 26 minute long video! Here we have a Santa Fe livery GP9u working a grain elevator, a former DM&IR SD-M collecting the cars from the mill, an ex NS GP38-2 startup and an ex EJE SD-M in notch 8 leading the unit train. I spent 12 hours filming this and another 4 editing!
Last week I used a vacation day to go follow the Chesapeake and Indiana around. I found that they had a grain train being loaded at Malden Indiana at the Co-Alliance grain elevator. This is located on the west end of the CKIN's Malden branch, part of the former C&O of Indiana. The elevator uses an ex ATSF GP7u still showing the unpatched BNSF 1653 to load the trains, at a rate of 3-4 cars an hour. The 1653 was built for the ATSF in 1956 as a GP9. I attempted to collect appropriate audio but the hum of the grain machinery drowned out most of the sounds of the locomotive and cars.
Once the CKIN crew came on duty I went east to La Crosse to film CKIN 814 trundle to Malden. 814 was built as a SD9 for the DMIR in 1959 before being rebuilt as a SD-M. This also gave me an opportunity to try out my new device, the DJI Osmo Pocket. This is a handheld gimbal that shoots 4K seems ideal to film close up pan shots. Upon arriving at Malden the Co-Al crew still had 2 cars to load. 814 was tied on and ready to air test when 1653 shoved the last cut of cars onto the train. CKIN 814 pulled the loaded cars long hood forward back to La Crosse this was half the train. Also the abandoned structure is Wade Tower. At this location the Monon heading north to Michigan City crossed the C&O.
At La Crosse in the Chesapeake and Indiana's yard CKIN 818 / CKIN 5093 were tied down with the other half of the train, already loaded. 818 also was built as an SD9 for the DMIR in 1959, the 5093 was built for the Southern Railway in 1973 and retains its original number. The crew tied down the 814 and moved over to this power set giving me the opportunity to film 2 locomotive startups. The crew would reverse to the other set and do their air test. About 20 minutes after sunset the 818 came notching by taking the full train to interchange with Norfolk Southern at Thomaston Indiana.

This may have been the first time any of us have ever seen a grain hopper being loaded from the top view. That was excellent. The drone view is like watching the best and most realistic train set you can imagine. 👍
Thank you!! They’re typically not accessible for the public to watch!
Amazing how with the drone footage the real trains are looking like model trains, and the model trains are looking like real trains!
Great video! Wonderful overhead shots of QN Cabin!
This is really cool. Thanks. Ive been to Malden multiple times, but had never seen any of the trains going in or out. Nice to see. Thanks
Very very sweet Scott. Those golden hour drone shots are beautiful!
Thank you!!!
Awesome video, thanks for showing the entire operation!
This channel’s work among the very best railfanning... And there are some genuinely great channels out there. Five stars across the board! Thank you so much for sharing your hard work!
Thank you! I try to plan the final product as I film and I thing it shows in the end result.
Interesting video -- I especially liked the detail of the train loading, watching the guy close the hatches, the way cuts were maneuvered. Nice job.
Scott, you hit this one out of the ballpark, I just love the first gen. diesels still earning their keep today. I'm a little bored of class 1 main line race tracks.
Thank you, I planned the end result as I was filming and I think it comes across in the final product!
Great description love the details. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching. This is definitely one I put a lot of effort into!
Good video, thanks for the time you put in.
It's wonderful to see the green! I really enjoy your videography. Going into August and seeing snow was beginning to make me think you might live in Narnia. Just kidding I enjoy your work, thank you!!!
Thank you so much for this. I absolutely love watching them work industries and switching. This is a top notch video.
Thank you very much!!
Excellent work. I appreciate your efforts.
What a brilliant shot of the loading process, showing just how it's done
Thank you very much!!
Well done video. Most informative on how they load their grain hoppers and build the train. Enjoyed it.
Very well done reminds me of my days chasing Goderich and Exeter to Goderich to pick up the salt cars. The Drone allows you to see more of the area and you shots of the molll and the train were very well done. I've been flying a drone for about 3 years myself and it sure does make a difference. I Isubbed your channel. Look forward to more of your videos.
Great video! I always wanted to see this operation!
Really great video! Drone shots are awesome especially around the grain elevator!
Flat out Awesome Video!!! Thanks for posting!!
Thank you very much
Wow! Absolutely amazing vid! Great job!
Excellent work. Thanks for the fine video.
Thank you!!!!
An absolutely great video!!! Love the industrial shots, especially with the drone!! You have such a great talent in this genre.
Thank you so much
1st Time Viewer and based on the Video and many Great Comments, I decided to Subscribe. 👍
Thank you very much for the subscribe!
Outstanding!...Again! Thank you Scott.
Thank you!!
Just subscribed. Great video. Makes a change from main line running and it’s good to see the surrounding American countryside. Excellent. Stay safe. 🇬🇧Mick
Badass! Love the sound of the EMD naturally aspirated engines. I used to work for the J and worked around both the 814 and 818. They were mostly hump engines, occasionally transfers to C&O/B&O or NS Pines or out on the Lake Front Line to Marks yard
Great video Scott. Really enjoyed it.
scott-
well done sir. now we all know how it is done. great drone use too.
did not know it was all that flat in parts of this country.
your efforts on your holiday are greatly appreciated by me, and I hope all who see this.
thank the little helper too, i'm sure he will grow into a train fan like his father. god bless.
Incredible drone footage (as usual).
Thank you!!
A awesome Video.....thanks for sharing
i have driven past that bnsf santefe engine for so long it's unreal. crazy to see this as a recommended video for myself.
wow, how simulation games be developed is really amazing
Awesome video. This is on my bucket list to visit.
Thank you
Great video! Always go through Malden on my way to Wheatfield . That facility has grown through the years. Always good to se the Santa Fee engine parked by highway 49.
Beutifull !!! Thanks for sharing
Excellent footage!!!! that GP38-2 screaming took the cake.
Thank you!!
@@ScottTaipaleRail you're welcome.
Great work Scott !! Thanks
Thank you
@Scott Taipale,
Very nice video. Great angles, solid content and well produced. It kept my interest.
Keep them coming!
Thank you very much!!
Excellent video Scott!!!

@@ScottTaipaleRail Your welcome!!!
Happy new week! 🎆
Fantastic video!
Great mix of motive power.
Great video!
I always enjoy working up in that area and getting to see the trains go by once and awhile
Cool
Thank you for sharing. I waved back at you.
Outstanding!
Great Video, I love it!
Thank you!!
Nice and interesting video.
Thank you
Well it shows hard work pays off. I'am a new subscriber GOOD JOB.
Drove by that elevator on route 49 many times. Remember when it was much smaller, and in the fall, they would pile corn on ground.
Awesome! Had no idea any of this was still in use.
Thank you. It came close to abandonment but the elevator is a big shipper!
Nice to see the the Original EJ&E engine still running. There were two of them in the arrow paint scheme. The rest were painted in an Orange paint scheme.Miss seeing it run thru Griffith Indiana now that CN bought it out.
Beautiful work Scott! You have the colour temp dialled in perfect on the Drone...wonderful shots! The sun shining on the train is perfect lighting and your composition is getting better and better! Well worth taking the time to watch sir.
Cheers Gregg.
Thanks Gregg!!
Very cool.
Thank you
Very good video ! I model grain on my layout and this video is out standing. Definitely a keeper for future reference. I also model the E.J.& E.
Thank you!! I’m working on gathering scenes from various grain operations for one grand grain elevator video. I find the operations very interesting.
another thoroughly enjoyable operations video - great for railfans, even better for model railroaders like me. :) THANK YOU for these wonderful movies. You don't know how mnay different ways these footages help me. :) Cheers! Kaustav
Thank you and enjoy the modeling!!
I love gp9s especially the B&o ones
Agree
Often drive by the Malden Elevator on Indiana SR 49. I've always thought that engine to be a GP20.
Has Mr. Felix seen this? If not I'm sure he would love it. An incredible turn-around for this operation over the years. Fantastic shots.
I figure he’ll see it eventually!
@@ScottTaipaleRail Talked to him last night. I'll pass on the specific link.

Thank you
It took me until 1:50 seeing the movement of the dozer to realize that I was infact not looking at a very realistic model set...
I do my Malden watching from the oasis
If you've ever worked a grain elevator or a farmer's co-op, you didn't like to work it after it rained. The grain fermented, rotted, and stuck to your work boots, which in turn smelled rotten. lol
I worked on a dairy farm and fermented feed is nasty!
Nothing like switching cars standing in rotting corn. Yep. Done that a time or two
Awesome video Scott, 1st time I've ever seen a grain train loaded as such. That place looks amazing right out surrounded by fields etc. I do know that one building that's stores grain holds 1million bushels! I have a question Scott. The next time you're out doing videos and if the NS HIGH HOOD is running can you take a picture and send to me for the railroad room I'm creating in our new home. Reason I asked is bcuz I'm a disabled Delawarian and don't get out much. TIA my friend..
That ground man is trying to get himself killed
Nice. Have you vidio unloading grass from train
Thank God for flat country or they would need some more muscle. Nice vid,
Thank you!
Locomotives from different railways, pretty cool video. Just curious what drone are you flying.
so that's how they load covered hopper cars
Yes
Superb footage, some of the steadiest and sharpest drone footage of trains I have seen. Really loved the old Santa Fe livery, it has held up well despite it’s age. One negative, and a fairly major one: you have obviously enabled Google to advertise on your clips, there were at least SEVEN interruptions whilst trying watch this! Surely the enjoyment of your many subscribers is worth more than the handful of dollars they give you at the end of the month?
The commercial interruptions suck but how many people have the time to dedicate 16+ hours on a RUclips video without at least breaking even.
Soon I will be migrating some of my films to a subscription service and they will no long be available for free.
Scott Taipale apologies Scott I had no idea this is what you do for a living, I just assumed it was a hobby like most of us. Sorry to see you migrating to a paid subscription, although I have enjoyed many of your videos I am not sure I consider them good enough to pay for. That is just personally speaking, I am sure there are others out there who would.
What kind of drone are you using? Great video!
Where can I get this game, looks so real.
Haha
Very nice video. It tells a story. Question: What did the BNSF GP9 do when it returned to the grain elevator?
They parked it by the office. I had to hurry because it only took a few minutes for 814 to underway.
Nicely done.
Q: Does the locomotives have to have some special apparatus on it to keep sparks from happening in order to keep any grain dust explosions from occurring?
No. Dust explosions basically only happen in confined spaces. You'd need to generate an unbelievable amount of dust from loading for the locomotive to spark a dust explosion.
Scott, Muchly appreciate you doing these video's for us, love the old livery SantaFe.
Is that an old Tower/train station or house at 19:05 in the video?
Thank you. Wade tower, the Monon crossed here.
if you want to find more old sante fe engines. check the St Louis area! where i have gotten lucky! caught a unpatched atsf engine on point! of a stack train! St louis has a ton of hidden fallen flag gems!
How many wagons do they pull ? Great video
The old c&o railroad main line runs next to it.
CKIN runs the C&O, the PRR main parallels the C&O east of La Crosse.
Yes
I thought BNSF 1653 was out of Commission ... I’m pretty sure it’s actually ATSF 725 Which used to be a high hood locomotive
What are santa fe old train
What Railroad originally ran the line ?
what r they loading corn, barley, oats, wheat, soy beans? are those 3400 or 4000 bushel cars? where are heading to great lakes or to New Orleans?
I have always wondered how those cars were loaded how are they unloaded?
I have not had the opportunity to sit around to sit around watching an unload....yet
Scott, I work here currently. How can I get in touch with you about a specific question please? Thanks

...presses wrong button, dumps 50 tons of soybeans onto the locomotive...
