    Folks, I have a cassette tool. I use it all the time to replace the cassette. But I'm not gonna let a puny little piece of plastic tell me how run my life. Just try the torch method. You'll love it.

      Hey I did it the other day but I did it in two sections so I can just pull it off easily and thanks for the method it’s another trick in my book

      Or from people not agreeing to see a hot knife close to the bike. And you can see why: after the first 5 millimeters @1:04 the knife slips and hit something. It can damage the frame or a cable housing. Or yourself. LOL. Sorry but I don't recommend doing it like in this video to anyone.

    Worked perfectly thank you.
    Didn't have a cassette tool or a blow torch so I used a gas hob. Only casualty was the butter knife.

    I just cut it with a steel wire cutter but you inspired me to do that - thanks :)

    I have to say, you are genius. I have either cassette tool or blow torch but a gas stove.
    simply heat the knife and carefully cut it. Done. 100% faster than with cassette tool.

    Nothing but a "perceived upgrade in appearance" without it. Mind you that perceived value increase is greatly diminished if the chain (or derailleur) shifts into the spoke and rolling bike force rips off the shifter.

    The hardest part of removing the dork ring is removing the wheel. Removing cassette takes 30 seconds 60second to rebuild and retorque.

    me and my buddy used a set of pliers and a blowtorch, pulling it with the pliers and melting the crap out of it with the blowtorch

    • @bensnyder2057

      The important part is that you used a torch. Nice work.

    Pretty risky way of doing this, would not recommend doing this. Just get some pruning shears or wire cutters. Snip snip done

    I don’t have a blow torch or cassette tool 🤦🏻‍♂️ I used wire cutter to chip away at the plastic and I used a long nose plier to pull it apart. It wasn’t easy. Just keep at it and it will eventually come out.

    Easier than removing the cassette?

    • @bensnyder2057
      @bensnyder2057  6 лет назад +2

      100% + waaay cleaner. And, I'd wager, you're more likely to damage something removing the cassette simply by there being more steps with metal on metal contact. Chain whips slip, wrenches strip etc.

  • @CappyLarou

    but why remove it, it's weight is negligible, has no impact on aerodynamics, and will save your literal skin if your chain hops.

    • @bensnyder2057
      @bensnyder2057  2 года назад +4

      1) if you ever have a mechanical during a race with a dork disk (say it breaks and jams in the spikes) your race is over because you have to remove the cassette to get to it, 2) it looks better and cycling is 95% about looking cool, 5% about going fast.

  • @daniellopez732
    @daniellopez732 4 года назад +1

    This takes longer than simply using a cassette tool. Just unscrew it, take it out, take the dork disk out, and re attach it. Wtf is the point in this. Also, a torch costs a shit ton more than a simple cassette tool.

    Christ almighty, just remove the cassette. Of all the ways you could’ve done this you decided to blow torch a butter knife. Why?
