Folks, I have a cassette tool. I use it all the time to replace the cassette. But I'm not gonna let a puny little piece of plastic tell me how run my life. Just try the torch method. You'll love it.
Or from people not agreeing to see a hot knife close to the bike. And you can see why: after the first 5 millimeters @1:04 the knife slips and hit something. It can damage the frame or a cable housing. Or yourself. LOL. Sorry but I don't recommend doing it like in this video to anyone.
I have to say, you are genius. I have either cassette tool or blow torch but a gas stove. simply heat the knife and carefully cut it. Done. 100% faster than with cassette tool.
Nothing but a "perceived upgrade in appearance" without it. Mind you that perceived value increase is greatly diminished if the chain (or derailleur) shifts into the spoke and rolling bike force rips off the shifter.
I don’t have a blow torch or cassette tool 🤦🏻♂️ I used wire cutter to chip away at the plastic and I used a long nose plier to pull it apart. It wasn’t easy. Just keep at it and it will eventually come out.
100% + waaay cleaner. And, I'd wager, you're more likely to damage something removing the cassette simply by there being more steps with metal on metal contact. Chain whips slip, wrenches strip etc.
1) if you ever have a mechanical during a race with a dork disk (say it breaks and jams in the spikes) your race is over because you have to remove the cassette to get to it, 2) it looks better and cycling is 95% about looking cool, 5% about going fast.
This takes longer than simply using a cassette tool. Just unscrew it, take it out, take the dork disk out, and re attach it. Wtf is the point in this. Also, a torch costs a shit ton more than a simple cassette tool.

Hey I did it the other day but I did it in two sections so I can just pull it off easily and thanks for the method it’s another trick in my book
The dislikes are people with a cassette tool
O K 😆

10000 degree knife vs dork disc
I can hear the wife now, "What the hell happened to my butter knife and how did the kids burn their fingers!"
Worked perfectly thank you.
Didn't have a cassette tool or a blow torch so I used a gas hob. Only casualty was the butter knife.
I just cut it with a steel wire cutter but you inspired me to do that - thanks :)
This is the best bike video I’ve ever seen.
It's a ton of fun too.

Did it with a candle, worked perfectly.
Fence sheers (clippers) work just fine.
Awesome idea. Gonna use a spade tipped soldering iron.
I used a pair heavy duty scissors took 10 seconds 😂👍
Thanks I didn’t wanna risk destroying my spokes
@Lee Meerun thanks for the tip
"This is the funner way too, BTW"
Your, jib. . . I fancy that cut!
That went a lot smoother than how I did it haha!
pure genius. thank you
Thanks

Dude, there are GRAMS in there.
Come on and WW like a pro.!
The hardest part of removing the dork ring is removing the wheel. Removing cassette takes 30 seconds 60second to rebuild and retorque.
Let's race :)
question is why remove it
It make dirt and dusts getting trapped on your gears
me and my buddy used a set of pliers and a blowtorch, pulling it with the pliers and melting the crap out of it with the blowtorch
The important part is that you used a torch. Nice work.
Pretty risky way of doing this, would not recommend doing this. Just get some pruning shears or wire cutters. Snip snip done
Scissors???

i just used scissors lol. really good ones
Why? It's meant to prevent tragedy along with expense.
I used snips
The things people do to remove a plastic disc
Yeah i have a heat torch in my house its so common :D
A lot more work that you needed to do
I don’t have a blow torch so ill just use my stove lol.
That’s the spirit!
Easier than removing the cassette?

I don’t usually give a thumbs down but you deserve a big one here !
I’m inspired by your commitment to using the internet.
Yeah, cause everyone has a torch
Blow torches are more than 5x as popular than cassette tools trends.google.com/trends/explore?geo=US&q=blow%20torch,cassette%20tool
Mole grips snap less than a second ya dork
but why remove it, it's weight is negligible, has no impact on aerodynamics, and will save your literal skin if your chain hops.

I couldn't see shit
Christ almighty, just remove the cassette. Of all the ways you could’ve done this you decided to blow torch a butter knife. Why?
