    As a professional mechanic since 1984 Im fully aware of what the spoke protector does and doesn't do. Yes those stupid rings on high end wheels don't work very well. The most common cause of the overshift is not a poorly adjusted derailleur. It is the derailleur hanger getting bent that is equipped on the majority of bikes sold (high end road bikes are a niche market) those hangers bend very easily and are usually not true by the time the bike is in for a tune up a year later and many of the bikes I work will have evidence of an overshift probably half because it's pretty common. Those 3 and 4 pronged spoke protector do work on alot of normal small and large flange hubs just replace it with a new cassette. Some of those failures can be quite catastrophic to the parts and sometimes the body. But usually goes unnoticed until one of the drive side spokes breaks and then I end up replacing all of that side of the flange by removing them one at at time unthreading ,replace and get it up to proper tension onto the next in a staggered rotation. Then after all are replaced wheel truing begins. This process takes as long as a whole wheel build with all new spokes ...many just buy a new wheel. Some just replace the one broken spoke and have the wheel trued (and some of the time I break some more any way truing the wheel) and are back with a new broken spoke later. Too bad they don't make real nice looking ones that actually work for high end wheels...but then again that's a niche market with expensive and high profit margins parts . Cha...Ching ! Oh forgot chash registers don't make that sound anymore. So let's stop calling them dork disks it's insulting and unprofessional. And they do serve a majority of costumers well. Those bikes subject to alot of random stuff and not noticed until the inevitable overshift. Any mechanic that says that it's all about being properly adjusted is full of ....

      I seriously doubt that most mass market bike riders follow this channel or watch such videos, so they're dorky within the confines of higher-end bikes and the people who ride them, like kick stands and schrader valves. Of course if you ride a nice bike but don't know the first thing about maintaining it, it might be a good idea to keep the dork disk.

      so my question is I think my first road bike broke because I over shifted and I broke my derailer specifically because I didn’t have the plastic guard. This was a lightbulb moment just now. Currently I have a specialized allez… if I over shift, you guys are telling me that this is a legit safety feature? If anyone understands my two questions, please let me know. I have been on a bicycle for 2+ years as a mode of transportation. if it’s a dork dish that prevents me from breaking my bicycle im all for it

    It's removed from all of my bikes but I could see how it may have helped when I crashed off road and ever so slightly bent the derailleur hanger. When I tried to get into the biggest cog, the chain went behind it and jammed hard. Damaged a spoke that broke shortly thereafter.

    I just got a new bike (your super-cheap beginner's bike from a few weeks ago that you looked down your noses at but a step up for me) and it has a dork disk. Figured I'll tear it off soon when I'm completely sure I have it all dialed in. It's about the same size as the cassette and barely noticeable.
    I actually put a dork disk on my 1977 Trek two years ago. Found a vintage aluminum one that's a bit smaller than my freewheel so you can't really see it. I broke a spoke and had to dnf a triathlon when it got up in there. It happened a few times since and the dork disk protected the spokes. I know I'm a total loser and don't know how to ride a bike if that happens, but stuff happens with friction shifters and 45 year old parts. Got it dialed in now and have put a few thousand miles on it the past couple years without losing the chain up there.

    Don't take them off just because you don't want to look like a dork. Wait until you aren't a dork. A dork will never bother to check their derailleur alignment after they crash on or fall onto their drive side. A bent derailleur hanger can result in a broken hanger and/or rear derailleur.

    1:50 10 o'clock & 2 o'clock with your tools Ollie. 10 o'clock & 2 o'clock FFS. The reason they are on bikes is so that the factory assemblers can jam through the gears in no time flat without scratching the spokes with low gear overruns, and then leave it on (for the 30 sec time saving it takes to remove) and sell it as a benefit to retailers, who sell it to customers. On kids bikes, they're justified, as kids just chuck their bikes driveside down and bend the derailleur so that it deposits the chain in the spokes, no matter how carefully it's adjusted. Even MTBs without a clutch derailleur can benefit from them.

      The analogy is a comparison of "shoulds" not drivers and riders. We all "should" know the rules of the road, not just good drivers. We all should not need a "dork disk." Both the traffic signals and dork disk overcome potential problems. A lack of them invites problems. All that's going on with the dork disk discussion is one-upmanship. Nothing more.

  • @bengt_axle
    @bengt_axle 2 года назад

    I believe the dork disk was initially put there at the request of legal representatives, who wanted to reduce liability in the case of a lawsuit where one alleges that the bike is inherently dangerous because if the derailleur gets caught in the spokes, it can cause loss of control. We know, of course, if this happens it will just slow the bike down. Today, it may have a second use: protecting the disk brake rotor from overspray when degreasing and washing the bike while it is being sprayed. Can you relocate the dork disk on the other side, closer to the disk?

      I concur with you. Keep it on but only provided it's a decent quality dork disc, that doesn't rattle or rub your derailleur or chain. Sometimes you luck out and get a dork disc with a tight fit that looks decent. Most dork discs are low quality, rattle, rub the chain or derailleur & UV degrade quickly. More people would keep them on if they actually FIT well & were made of quality UV resistant nearly invisible plastic that was only just as wide a diameter as necessary so as it looks 'austhetically pleasing'.
      A 'quality dork disc' is a definate 'project' to design if you have access to a 3D printer!

    Is the dork disc necessary if having electric gear-shifter such as ETAP? :)

    I bent my hanger powering up a short hill on a 400k ride. At 300 km I shifted my rear derailleur into my rear wheel which ended my ride (at 1am) and did almost $300 worth of damage. New Campy Chorus rear derailleur and a rebuilt wheel. That's why the dork disk is there. I will never remove one again.

    Leave it on unless it's broke or making a noise. It's there for a reason if you don't know how to adjust the detailer.

    The easiest way to remove the dork disc is to cut the disc in two places with metal shears (aka tin snips). Works like a charm in a couple of minutes.

    I don't know WTH Ollie is talking about ... 'Dork Discs' from european racing bikes of the 1930s-50s, with Campagnolo Cambio Corsa or Paris-Roubaix or Super Champion Osgear Derailleurs looked PROPER COOL!

    Thus far, I've destroyed two derailleurs, two derailleur hangers, one new gp5000 tire, and one wheel because i dont use the dork disc.
    But it has been many years since i had a problem because i always straighten my hanger and adjust my derailleur myself. NEVER TRUST LOCAL BIKE SHOPS! You're a dork if you let them touch your bike... That's just my experience. 😤
    It's like putting your life in the hands of a someone still working their way through freshmen year of college. I would only trust an MD with my life. And even then i wouldn't blindly trust that MD. I would want to know and understand exactly what it is that he or she wants to do and why! At least with car mechanics, they've had several years of specialized education. But with the local bike shop they just learn on the job.. hardly even have an apprenticeship.

    The dork is the guy sitting at the roadside with his chain wedged between his gears and spokes -- maybe with damaged spokes to boot! Hit some bumps, and the derailer adjustment doesn't matter. Dork.

    If you couldn't figure out how to remove the dork disc without watching this video first, you probably are not that good at keeping your derailleur adjusted and should keep the disc in place.

      On the contrary, if you follow the rules and watch tech videos, you are more likely to read the derailleur service manual and adjust it corretly

      No one's born knowing how to do most things. Particularly mechanical things like this. No need to have a snobby attitude. Spreading education and knowledge is a good thing; if you feel threatened by that, then maybe you need to address your own insecurities rather than project them onto others.

    • @wilfdarr
      @wilfdarr 2 года назад

      Exactly! Anyone with a multitool has already figured this out: anyone who hasn't already probably hasn't figured out derailleur adjustment and is going to get a chain in there sooner than later!

    If one can't figure out how to remove it, then they probably don't understand how it works and when it would actually help them; hence they should leave it attached.

    I love the idea of a Dura-Ace wheel set coming with dork discs. Shimano should absolutely consider running an ad for Dura-Ace wheels that is normal in every way save for the inclusion of dork discs for April Fools.

  • @wilfdarr
    @wilfdarr 2 года назад +2

    Keep it in place until it breaks (you never know when someone bends your derailleur at a coffee stop or bike lock up at work without your knowledge, after which you shift into low, and !crunch!): once it's broken it's extremely easy to remove and not doing any good anyways!
    Makes it an easy decision!
