This video really hits close to home for me. I went a good 6 months straight of being in a depressed funk and eating fast food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It both killed me financially and probably did a number on my arteries. I’m one month into cooking and eating all my meals at home and I feel healthier and my wallet feels fatter. For anyone out there reading this who is in a similar situation, one of my favorite super easy meals is grilling some chicken breast marinated in Greek vinaigrette. I then chop it up and serve it on top of a plate of romaine lettuce and spinach with a drizzle of the vinaigrette and a hefty sprinkle of Parmesan cheese.
leon leon I don’t know if you’ve ever gone through horrible suicidal depression, but sometimes logic can go out the window. Even just boiling water for some instant oatmeal can be too much work when all you want to do is lay in bed and wallow. You get to the point where you’ll go days on end not showering because you just don’t care about anything anymore. The best thing I ever did was take 6 weeks off from work to seek intense mental health treatment. That’s why I included my favorite easy recipe because when you’re trying to claw your way out of that hole you need tiny baby steps of low effort tasks. Frozen fruits/berries are also clutch, most of them come pre chopped and you can just run them under hot water for a few seconds and they're defrosted but still cold. Frozen shrimp, if you're doing the $100 over one month, I got 4 lbs frozen for $20 at a supermarket not too long ago. Still eating them, same thing you can just run under hot water and they're defrosted and ready to cook. I make ceviche, shrimp alfredo, shrimp and rice, all kinds of stuff. Good source of low calorie protein and omega 3s.
One of my biggest concerns with buying fresh fruit is how quickly it can go bad, and having the urge to use it all up before it spoils. Frozen fruit can stay fresh longer because you keep it in the freezer (duh). So you can pick up a bag of frozen blueberries or strawberries, run a small handful under some warm water, and toss them into your oatmeal. Easy alternative to fresh fruit, and a whole bag might last you more than a couple weeks.

I still remember a time in my life when it was "I can't afford to eat." and a time shortly afterwards where I only had $7.50-10 per week for food. Luckily I know how to grow a lot of food (and have subsequently come to despise the taste of tomatoes) but don't speak as if everyone has the same privileged life you've led.
@@taylorhillard4868 What you are describing is not being able to afford to eat, not "i can't afford to eat healthy". The choice of what to buy with your money always allows for healtht food. Bags of beans and rice are about as cheap as it gets and can go a very long way while providing adequate fats, proteins, and carbs.
@@taylorhillard4868 Most of the people who we see saying "I can't afford to eat healthy" can afford to eat take out. Of course if you're struggling to pay for food, then get as much calorie dense foods as you can regardless of health.
@@taylorhillard4868 First off, you know nothing about me and my "Privileged life" , lol. Living a healthy life-style does not require any more money than living an unhealthy life. You don't need a gym membership to get some exercise, go for a walk or run, its free. When buying food, instead of picking up that pack of processed cookies, buy some fruit instead, or buy the ingredients to make your own cookies at home. Yes, if you are extremely poor, you will probably go for the most calorie dense food, but that doesn't necessarily mean it needs to be shit food. Being healthy is a state of mind. People make all kinds of excuses to themselves for making bad decisions when it comes to their health.
This is basically what I live on. About 6 years ago I lost over a hundred pounds and set to getting buff after that. I really didn't have much success until quarantine where I got right with my macros and wound up gaining a lot of upper body weight while keeping my waist a 33. I'm 6'5, 262lbs, and I live off of $85 CAD every two weeks, which is bottom barrel pricing, especially trying to just hit carbs and get within 15g of protein goal. For me though, I go a lot for dried chickpeas, dried lentils, 10lb bags of rice (that lasts me two months), passata, whole wheat flour, tofu, oat milk, and veg. I recently began trying to lean out and return to my vegetarian roots, but had to concede to keeping skyr and feta cheese because nothing else has the right carb to protein ratio.
Beyond the awesome budget and nutritional info I got from the video I loved to see that you didn't take your mask down to talk in the store(so many other channels are) and you didn't use any plastic bags! I like the little things here and there that show that not only are you dudes buff, but your awesome people!
Protip: don't crack eggs on the edge of anything (bowl, counter, etc.) Do this on a flat surface instead -- you're less likely to get shell in your meal.
You forgot one of the cheapest, easiest, and most versatile foods of all. Instant potatoes. 3 bucks for at least 3lbs, that'll last you a few months easy.
This was so useful, thanks Hudson, there's some of us out there that really can't afford those super fancy ingredients that most famous diets need but still wanna eat clean, definitely will be adding some of these meals to my list

Great video! I do this a lot, just because I am an ultra runner and LOVE Pasta, rice, oats, bread etc haha so it works out super cheap for me. I use lentils, Soy meat/TVP and shakes for protein mostly and occasionally eggs or meat/fish if I want them. Then Frozen veggies/fruit and bananas for 50c per lb or under and sorted
I've done a challenge like this! I found out in my area (South Atlanta area), the answer is NO, you CANNOT eat healthy on $20 per week, because groceries are quite expensive when you get close to I-285. Particularly in high-poverty areas, paradoxically. I only need 1800 calories per day, by the way. So when I say it can't be done in my area, it really, really can't be done. Heads up: Incoming rant. I did my challenge in an attempt to learn extreme budgeting and I inadvertently learned a bunch of the hidden complications of poverty. Here's the difference between my challenge and this one in the video: 1. I couldn't afford meat. At the time I attempted this, meat was entirely out of my budget. My protein came from eggs, milk, and beans. 2. Frozen vegetables were SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive, so I wasn't able to get many servings. (It looks like he was able to get a couple of pounds of broccoli for $2.67 and a pound of spinach for $1.00. Where I was shopping, the best deal I could get was a dollar for twelve ounces of mixed vegetables, with the price going up on spinach and other individual options.) 3. Even bananas were more expensive, at 35 cents apiece. 4. I had one, and only one, choice of locations to shop at. When you have a limited budget, you don't have gas money. On the $20 diet, I was dangerously low on fats, especially omega-3's, and on top of the calorie deficit, that meant I wasn't getting in my fat-soluble vitamins. In addition, the diet was low in potassium and calcium (despite the milk and bananas, I know). I was tired all the time, stressed about my food running short too soon, and clearly deficient in b-vitamins from the get-go. Fun fact, if you have an anxiety disorder like I do, your body needs more b-vitamins than the typical person. It's quite easy to run low. Will I ever attempt this again? Perhaps. I'll likely consider different food staples, like adding more potatoes for that coveted potassium and finding ways to incorporate fish in some form, but without travel options and the discounts that come from being able to buy and store in bulk or having a store membership, healthy food gets expensive fast. A $50 weekly budget is doable, even luxurious to the savvy cook. But the $20 weekly menu? If you're in the wrong area, your health will suffer.
I just realized right now, everytime you guys make a challenge, you don't just entertain us, you learn something yourself. After all these years, it must be empowering. Right now, you know that if you'll ever become poor, you could make it. That must be relaxing
I was born and raised in American poverty and I know for a fact that eating healthy is cheaper than indulging sugary junk and boxed crap. What people REALLY mean when they say they can't afford it is (1) that they've never really even tried to budget, not by necessity or otherwise, and just don't realize this or (2) they just don't want to put in the effort as it's easier to prepare meals of boxed junk than it is to cook rice and oats etc. Hudson made great choices for this experiment. The idea of budgeting for a month is even better. I recommend that people also consider identifying someone in your family or friend circle with a Sam's Club membership to see if they can take you with them once a month. For instance, you can buy 25lbs bag of rice for $10-$12 which would last an individual much more than a month. In this way you can get rotations going, buying your rice this month, your oats next month, etc. With planning, it's absolutely doable.
@@axonis2306 Well minimum wage is 380$ / month. Approximately 40% of country is working on minimum wage, and other qualified jobs pay nearly the same salary more or less. But it is not over yet! @@eToLiveIsToDie Really sorry to read that. I sincerely hope it will get better soon. I believe that; I live in Greece and 5 years ago I thought that our economic depression would never end. Covid-19 damage aside, things get better. I'm sure it will for Turkey as well.
Both me and my partner spend about this much combined a week ( if we're not splurging on junk food) so this is actually a little expensive on our end. We mostly try to eat everything with white rice, it's cheap and nutritious. In general, just cooking from scratch at home is cheaper and better for you.
Great video! Look up the flyers the week before, spend 20min planning your grocery list, and focus on bulk purchases and you’ll immediately notice a huge difference.
Awesome vid! Especially good for those trying to build muscle and maintain a calorie deficit. "I can't afford to eat healthy" is a crazy way to think. Pay now or pay big time later, when you need open heart surgery.
People love making excuses

You guys have amazing content, I hate that people aren’t watching you guys as much.
Just wanted to say you guys are awesome! Your tips have helped me knock off 5lbs in the last 5 weeks and I am well on my way to my goal.
Beyond the awesome budget and nutritional info I got from the video I loved to see that you didn't take your mask down to talk in the store(so many other channels are) and you didn't use any plastic bags! I like the little things here and there that show that not only are you dudes buff, but your awesome people!
OMGosh! "Buff Dudes, Ya!" --the little one makes me want to do this challenge! Hahahaha!
Protip: don't crack eggs on the edge of anything (bowl, counter, etc.)
Do this on a flat surface instead -- you're less likely to get shell in your meal.
i actually noticed that one day when i was making eggs lmao like the edge literally pushes the shell inside the egg
More and more people need these kind of videos to help the through these times! Thanks for sharing!
You forgot one of the cheapest, easiest, and most versatile foods of all. Instant potatoes.

Thanks! Really appreciate this video Buff Dude's
I spend 150 month for groceries, protein powder included and I’m really happy with it so that’s like a realistic goal
This is awesome, and super encouraging! Thank you guys for putting out videos like this. 👍🏼
For oatmeal, I love doing something savory. I do salt, pepper, garlic, and an over easy egg or 2. Works pretty well when I’m trying to fill up for cheap.
I need to rethink my spending habits

Assumptions here is that the person budgeting a healthy meal already has basic condiments (salt, pepper, paprika, etc) and oil for cooking. Still doable and I would like to challenge myself with only $20/week spending too

The same purchase in Canada would be around 35$ it's hard to find meat for that cheap thats decent quality, usually low grade and probably not fit for human consumption 😝
Because your guys money is worth less. So it adds up because making $35 in Canada is way easier than making $35 in the US.

When the food in Amercia is cheaper than the food in Bulgaria and here the minimum wage is like 250 bucks a month.
Keep in mind that things like healthcare or study in US are very expensive. And their quality of food is not that well.
Overall cost of living here is way higher. Not sure how it all works out really. Walmart is about as cheap as it gets as well. In terms of price and quality. Most people I know won't even buy meat from Walmart.

I wish I’d known 1. How to cook and 2. How to budget for groceries in bulk when I was in college. So many Kroger pop tarts, so few gains. Good thing I’ve got the buff dudes to guide me 10 years later
Such good advice! I've done this when I switched to macro eating and even plant based. Meals didn't get boring, just had staples and substituted when on sale.
Try doing this in 2023. Where it cost a arm and a leg to get basic necessities .
THANK YOU FOR NOT DOING THIS LONG DRAWN OUT VIDEO!! These other YTubers drag things on. I hate that. l love the budget meals! I just started them. Am on a fixed income. These look very delicious. Will try this wk.
*the Buff Dudes are PUSHING IT TO THE LIMIT with this budget (over)stretching.*
I follow a few other Fitness channels and i think its important to do a food challenge thats budget based because the reality is that many people (especially here in the UK) have such a tight budget that its hard to eat filling food let alone healthy or even tasty. Good stuff man
I would skip the milk and bought another carton of eggs and bag of broccoli.
Neither eggs nor milk is healthy though.
@@MrMakingwavesmedia Wrong, almond milk is better for you, more than cow milk is
@@NoName-zz8nl I did not say almond milk is not healthy. But the highly processed and GM almonds you have in the states are.
@@MrMakingwavesmedia depends on the brand. But eggs are actually healthy. Very protein dense tbh

This is so hard to do while living in NYC. Everything here is too damn expensive!
Steal from your neighbours.
Bodegas or Dollar Generals should have what you need.
I’m not sure which borough you live in.Try Stop & Shop, Aldi’s, Target and for $55 a year BJ’s (for buying in bulk). All the stores I mentioned are along the last 4 stops on the Uptown 1 train.
It's true, 3 lbs of chicken for $5, or 18 eggs for $2, is unheard of in NYC.
@Thelondonbadger I mean, I do all right for myself by stocking up when things are on sale. Costco is way out of the way for me, not worth it.
Here's the difference between my challenge and this one in the video:
Where I was shopping, the best deal I could get was a dollar for twelve ounces of mixed vegetables, with the price going up on spinach and other individual options.)
Dude thank you
I just realized right now, everytime you guys make a challenge, you don't just entertain us, you learn something yourself. After all these years, it must be empowering. Right now, you know that if you'll ever become poor, you could make it. That must be relaxing
"Red beans and rice didn't miss her..."
Thank You Guys !! Much Success in Life!! You're Helping Me and Many More !
My eggs came out 5 dollars a pack this year
I was born and raised in American poverty and I know for a fact that eating healthy is cheaper than indulging sugary junk and boxed crap.
With planning, it's absolutely doable.
you should do the montly one too, I would think you could get way more for 80 - 100 a month
I just started working and have no one to tell me how to manage my expenses so I appreciate you
it is so hard to watch this while living in turkey, lol
Why ?
@@axonis2306 Well minimum wage is 380$ / month. Approximately 40% of country is working on minimum wage, and other qualified jobs pay nearly the same salary more or less. But it is not over yet! And 20 Turkish liras can buy only 1kg of chicken breast or 4 liters of milk with current inflation in economy. That's all.
@@eToLiveIsToDie Really sorry to read that. I sincerely hope it will get better soon. I believe that; I live in Greece and 5 years ago I thought that our economic depression would never end. Covid-19 damage aside, things get better. I'm sure it will for Turkey as well.
@@axonis2306 I hope so. Thank you γείτονας, sincerely.
Both me and my partner spend about this much combined a week ( if we're not splurging on junk food) so this is actually a little expensive on our end. We mostly try to eat everything with white rice, it's cheap and nutritious. In general, just cooking from scratch at home is cheaper and better for you.
Great video! We teach personal finance on our channel, and one thing that we’ve covered is that it’s amazing what results you can achieve by even doing something as simple as not buying any candy or junk food on a grocery trip. In some cases it can reduce your expenses by up to 1/3 (individual cases will vary, naturally).
Look up the flyers the week before, spend 20min planning your grocery list, and focus on bulk purchases and you’ll immediately notice a huge difference.
Awesome video dude! I’m going to try it! Especially that burrito bowl.
I'd have trouble with that. I'd buy 2 steaks and that'd be it for the week >_
Awesome vid! Especially good for those trying to build muscle and maintain a calorie deficit. I am guessing you’re around 220lbs and most folks are probably not that big and this would be much more doable. Me being 168lbs shooting for 1600-1800 calories per day, $20 would honestly be easy as hell they way you just did it!!
