  • In part one of project “Hemi Jeep” I show my son the ropes of turning wrenches!
As a retired Master Mechanic with almost 30 years of experience, I figured this project would be perfect for teaching my son the in and outs of being a mechanic, as he has shown interest in doing so.
We bought this Jeep with a known bad engine. It had a very bad engine knock and the rear main seal was leaking, as well as many other seals.
If you are wondering why we tore the engine down while in the vehicle, it was because I decided to use the Jeep as an opportunity to teach my son the amount of labor required to just replace a bad camshaft and lifters in a modern Hemi. Once the camshaft was out, we moved on to removing the engine, which at that point was only an extra 30 minutes of easy work.
Engine tear down reviled brittle timing cover and oil pan gaskets. A failed rear main seal, destroyed camshaft, and 6 bad lifters. We inspected the bottom end and found no issues. We won’t be removing the pistons, as you will see in part 2, the cylinder walls and bottom end are in great shape!
