- I edited together The Berserk (TV Series 1997) into a film trilogy, I also used some parts from the new 2012 Berserk films. I take no credit for this video in anyway. The work is from Kentaro Miura story "Berserk". Directed by Naohito Takahashi and Toshiyuki Kubooka. Written by Ichirô Ohkôchi . Produced by Toshio Nakatani
For anyone wondering, the second two films, Farewell and The Hand of God are blocked in Canada, Holy See, Italy, San Marino and the United States. I tried a second attempt on Farewell, currently Canada and United States are still blocked. It's a bummer I wanted to share what I find to be a great way to watch Berserk.
I recommend any Berserk Fan to check out the film, Blue Velvet by David Lynch, I feel that at the core these to pieces of work are very similar.

well it is a dirty task, since Griffith said "because of the nature of this task, you are the only one I can trust"( 1:59:13 ). the point is that he trust Guts the most and he doesn't hesitate to kill.
i thought this exact same thing when i first watched this. I was like yo Guts is like a bull in a china shop, hes not a sneaky assassin?? wtf ? why not just griffith do it himself when its as important as this.
Maybe so there was no question whether the assassin would kill him or not? Casca and Judeau would have a harder time killing him if they were seen like Guts was. That said, I feel like Judeau's knife throwing would be an easy kill, and Casca could be much sneakier

There's nothing like hand-drawn animation on watercolor backdrops. Every scene is literally a painting.

Yea just sucks they left out some parts from the manga but still it's the best animation they have put out

If Guts didn't hear that, he wouldn't get it in his head to leave the Hawks in search of a dream of his own, Griffith doesn't feel the need to get busy with Charlotte as a consolation prize, never gets caught, never gets turned into an invalid. The whole series hinges upon that sentence.

1:27:57 basically tells you the real motif of the manga, "escaping fate" or "strength of change" Guts is given no choices in life yet manages to create them for himself by shear determination and will power defies the imposed ex: survives after mother passed away, becomes independent and free of his detainees, survives his death fate and slays a god. it might sound stupid but this the impression i get from reading and watching the anime but it really is one of the many meanings this series holds. truly a perfect work of art.
Their fate was already determined. Remember what Zodd said before he flew away after sparing both Guts and Griffith's lives. So regardless if Guts heard it or not... Griffith was willing to give up anything for his dream even his own men which included Guts. The eclipse was inevitable
I would kill to have the entire Manga done in this style. I don't understand why no one has. There's 1000 episode series of less deserving stories. So much money could be made off it.

@@legophaseiiclone4914 after the golden ages the story still continues. just look up berserk 2016 or something. they continue off from after skullknight saves them from the eclipse but skips a bit of the story to the main plot. its hard to explain but if you havent seen the new episodes or read the rest of the manga, you should go see it lol

When you think about it Guts is probably the last person you should send to assassinate. Sure he can get the kill but sneaking out isnt exactly his forte and hes easy to recognize with that sword lol.
Celtic Wind I’ve always thought about this, too. I think it boiled down to being the one person that Griffith trusts. Casca would be sneakier but he doesn’t have faith in her.
I think it had more to do with the comment Griffith made about how he drew up his plans with "Guts's propensities in mind". I think he was planning on having the kid killed and anyone else that was there in the process.
But even tho he got seen and some guards were left alive nobody notices the assassin has the exact same giant sword and cloth as guts

Dark Souls is influenced a lot by berserk, but I wouldn't call it the driving factor or inspiration.
So this is the “Golden age arc”? Why didn’t they continue the story in THIS animation style? This is way better than the newer films. The energy of the music is crazy. I miss these types of Anime so much.
this is only the first part of the golden age, the 1997 anime goes up to the eclipse.
Because this kind of animation and dedication to detail bankrupted many studios. Look at "Redline" one of the most visually compelling animes EVER made yet studio who made it died making it. So yeah cheaper to us computers to animate these days
@@captaintoyota3171 also remember back in thr day anime wasnt as big and as normalized as it is now so a good majority of the berserk fan base is comprised of vets who known berserk and anime for the longest so if possible you can get enough people from the community to help budget it depending on what studio of course but it can be hard since berserk is a manga/anime that in this year isn't as liked due to some scenes we all know which ones I'm talking about so trying to make a full fledged berserk anime will be extremely hard yet easy if the fan base grows much more

Great edit. Good place to end it and the post credit edit was a really good way to resequence that scene and it really makes it feel like it's even more about gut's life that way.
It's hard to put to words how much I hate Griffith. He's so polite and innocent it's impossible not to fall for him. It's not even that his behavior is an act. He's genuinely so polite, intelligent, level headed, skillful, well spoken and just downright fascinating. The only part of his behavior I would call an act is his modesty. But even then it isn't that he thinks highly of himself. He knows beyond a shadow of a doubt that he's fated to be something above other men.
Just look at how he conducts himself with the princess. He has practically every quality any person could ever hope to be, and yet this is what he does with it. He never says a word that won't further his ambition. Never forms a relationship for reasons other than his own gain. This is the philosophy he builds, the path he chooses to take.
Then again, fate is such a big part of Berserk. The universe goes out of its way to make sure Griffith keeps going, keeps getting closer to his goal. So maybe that anger shouldn't be directed at Griffith himself, but at the world that gave the man everything only to destine him to misuse it like this.
Still, every time the veil drops a bit and you get reminded of his single minded ambition, it feels like a betrayal.
Being frustrated with how Griffith uses his talents is like being frustrated with Guts for swinging around a huge sword.

Haven’t seen too many comments on it so I just wanted to say I love that you opened with the end of the eclipse. Really makes this feel like a grand epic being told with fate guiding our characters the entire way
The main plot of the story is that Griffith wanted Guts senpai attention and love but was pushed aside for casca and then killed everyone and rage fucked casca so hard she loses her memory and pisses off Guts senpai
Draico Storm basically and if you really think about it, the eclipse happened all because Griffith got laid lol
Draico Storm berserk is less about the story and more about the evolution of the characters.
Every frame looks so good, you rarely get this quality anymore.

It’s been a few years, but thank you again for providing us (non anime intellectuals) a way to view this. It’s dropped my jaw years ago, and still does now.
This strangely haunting, but kinda beatiful in a way. Very poetic too. Never seen beserk, but this story of Guts and Griffith is interesting. All I know about berserk is the eclipse and the dark soul references. The story moves pretty fast but it's interesting seeing small changes in guts every scene. I find his loyalty to Griffith inspiring for some reason.

This series has such a unique atmosphere that the movies just don't have, I think that's mostly because of the gorgeously painted backgrounds and Susumu Hirasawa soundtrack

New Berserk fan here, I’ve read the manga up to the point where Guts and Griffith play with the buckets, but the mangas are quite expensive so I watched this. At first I was worried that I would be missing something that the show skips, and as a result I wouldn’t be invested, I mean I don’t even know the names of the two blonde boys in the Hawk band (Like Judas and Rephial or something) but the moment where Guts goes on that mission at the end and… I was completely shocked, and now I’m completely hooked. Look forward to finishing this trilogy, and then reading what the show had to skip, thank you for making this!

You sure about that? Guts was one of the greatest reasons the Band of the Hawk was so powerful. Remember, he slayed 100 men on his own. He was their raider. Without Guts, their power dropped. In fact, I don't remember his name, but there was this one dude who hated Guts. He claimed that they didn't need him anyway after Guts helped them rescue Griffith. Even Caska brought up Guts not being there.

I dont like how they changed the assassination scene in this, in the manga Guts just heard someone say intruder and saw a shadow by the door, he didnt knowingly kill the child he charged before he saw
They show the kid but it's implied that it's pitch dark, with the candles being out and the scene getter darker. Plus u can tell from guts reaction, he couldn't tell who it was. To me, all of this was heavily implied
It's more powerful that he knew it was the kid. No witnesses was the order, so killing the kid even though he didn't want to showed how his blind loyalty to Griffith was making Guts slide towards ammorality.
@Greig91 This is my FIRST time watching Berserk in its entirety and not jumping around randomly like when I was young. So from an unbiased perspective, Guts clearly knew who he was killing.

This is crazy you put the Berserk 1997 series as a film mixed with the movies!!! And soo happy it has the English voices! At first I thought Guts was voiced by Crispin Freeman (Itachi) but I am CERTAIN Griffith has Sasuke's voice!!! Amazed by your dedication to put it together! But after having finished the show last night, I need to watch the movies. 3:30pm 15.12.2023
