Bro that little tama flyer kit, especially the 14" bass drum, are impressively fat in the mix

Thank you! I know man, I absolutely love this thing. Wait until you hear the latest recordings of it I've done. Tuesday I'll post a new lesson to a full song that the whole kit sounds so warm and fat. Most people tune them way too high. Keep thick heads on them and tune them super low and they sound amazing.

I appreciate you making a video on this.
    Multi instrumentalist here, bass primary.
I’m about 1k-1.5k hours into learning drums at home. The guy I bought the kit from was 2
To 3 inches taller than me.
I’ve adjusted the hats down and the throne up to be just about even from elbow bent to hats. My snare is very close to where your is.
It feels good for the kick leg to switch back
And forth between dropping the leg and calf/toe strikes.
I found the rimshot/snare part informative as well. Thanks for that!

Don’t tell Tommy Aldridge about the harms of sitting too low 😊
Great video! I sit about the same height, maybe slightly higher than you.

Heyyyy, I recognize that comment! 😆Awesome video Justin, very helpful, thank you dude!! I've raised my seat slightly as well as raising my snare a decent amount. It feels a bit awkward since I'm just not used to it yet, but I can definitely feel a difference in terms of power and action, as well as not smacking my leg as much haha. Thanks a lot dude, great info here!

What about thrones with a back rest. Many drummers use these, like Larry Mullen Jr. and it looks like it would add more comfort.

Personally, I don't really recommend them. You really shouldn't be leaning back, or any direction when you play drums. Sure in between songs it's fine. But generally, you should have your weight centered while playing.

I think you covered the highly contested topic of throne hight admirably.
While setting up kits are highly personal and subjective, our physiology and the mechanics of the human body are more or less the same . And what feels good or makes you think that you can play better in the short-term can often limit your growth and or cause you problems in the future. Worse , often times people dont make the connection between the cause and symptoms, since theyre not always as obvious as the deaf drummer who never uses ear protection.
Although this was a short video, it's importance should not be overlooked. Great content as usual my guy🤌
    Respect 👊

So informative. I’m a big guy and have never had a good throne to fit me. I can’t master heel up on the bass drum also so playing heel down requires a lower throne height. No issue with the snare tho. Thanks
Btw, what are you using to capture that amazing sound in your video? I still can’t get my Irig 2 to work with iPhone 13 after months. Love the channel 👍🏾

Thanks bud, glad you found it helpful! I actually had the whole kit miked up recording into Reaper on my MacBook that you can see to my right. For my voice I was using a wireless lapel mic going into my iPhone.

Ideally, you want to start your throne height with your thighs parallel to the floor while heel up and then adjust from there.
One thing you see people talking about is trying high and low throne heights. Set up high and feel what works and what doesn't. Set up low and do the same. Too high and i feel off balance, too low and i feel it in my right hip. So my happy medium is high enough so my legs dont feel fatigued but low enough to maintain balance and not feeling like I'm towering over and leaning into the kit.
We all have the same ergonomics, but we all have different measurements. Try high, try low, find your medium.
Also, notice throne height doesn't mess with your hands. You just raise up the kit to you, but you cant lower the floor. The only time you're going to have trouble is sitting super low with two 26" kicks with four power toms over them. Your toms shouldnt be pointed at you horizontally like spotlights pointing at your bellybutton. And they shouldn't be all cockeyed and crazy. Ergonomics. As flat as you get them, then angle towards you so you're not clicking rims. Simple ergonomics. So many people go visual first. "Flat looks cool!" Enjoy your slower progress and all of your upcoming injuries that cut your hobby/career/creative outlet short.

Some very good tips, however, I don’t agree with avoiding hydraulic thrones. I’m 68 years old and since playing on Roc’nSoc Hydraulic Thrones for the last 30 years, often 5 nights or more a week 4 hours a night I have no backache anymore. I can vary the seat height slightly for different styles of playing. For traditional grip I sit a few inches lower than for matched grip songs, which changes the rim height of the snare among other angles. The most important thing of the throne height is for me, that the hip, knee and ankle angles are all at more than 100 degrees.

Seat height is very personal. I've been seating low for 36 years and i'm very comfortable because i use a backrest. It is crucial that you take care of your back. Maybe you will not use one because most drummer don't but good luck because your playing more with your health than with your drums.
