Thanks for this lesson, Max, throne height is very important to having a comfortable setup, and a lot of drummers don't think about it. I played for years with a throne that was too low, and I struggled constantly with balance issues because I didn't know any better.
Thank you for this video! I have something for drummers to try. Positioning your throne’s tripod base with the single leg in front/ middle and the two other legs on either side of the drummer’s body, try removing the rubber feet from those two rear legs. It will cause the throne to tilt upwards at the front by maybe half an inch. I find it very comfortable on my back. This idea was inspired by the original DrumRack invention back in the ‘90s, which was notably used live by Will Kennedy.
I love the way yoıu look at music. I am a clasically trained composer and the way i approach music or the way that I TRY TO approach music is right around where you are at. Thanks for your content. I hope giving likes and commenting on your videos is good enough to support you. You are whatever Julian bream, Celibidache, Mlies Davis,John cage are to me. Thank you once more. Love the way you exist Dimsunk! :)
You are absolutely right. Playing any instrument begins with holding it right, standing right, sitting right, etc. It always ends up taking less effort to perform when you are comfortable and in the right position to operate the instrument efficiently.
Thanks Max for this important lesson. Drumming more than any other instrument that l can think of is intensely personal with setup. There are some common concepts, but no standard. When l first started learning drums on an e-kit in a big box music store, my teacher's philosophy was 'don't mess with the setup.' l can't tell you how frustrating it was playing on a kit that was supposed to serve all ages and abilities. What my teacher was saying without saying was 'learn to be uncomfortable.' This is a great reminder for us to take agency with our creative passions. 🙏
This is so timely. I bought a new drum stool last month for the first time since I got my first kit (over a decade). It has been difficult to adjust. I no longer get back pain but my footwork does not feel as secure as it used to be. I will experiment further using the principles you outlined in this video. Thanks a lot Max.
Ah man, I’d say yes!! Most definitely, I bought that DW airlift tractor throne a few years ago and it really gives me the stamina and balance for a gig, glad I bought it a few years ago, because they’re really expensive now. Love your vids Max!! You’re a stellar player!!
Surely though the fan noise is distracting you more than a half inch on the stool? Ditch the fan and play in your pants for the true soulful expression lol!

took me a minute to get that joke :D
Ergonomy is the less studied matter in music schools. Thanks

Great tip!
This really makes a world of a difference in control. If I’m comfortable on the stool, the longevity I have during a gig is increased 10 fold.
master drummer!
Ergonomy gets ignored a lot. Great points made!
Beginner Stuff! ...and this is what I am, since 40 years.
A good reminder, thanx!

Listening to this on 1.5x makes for some unbelievable grooves when you give examples!!

Bad posture = not only bad playing, but = injury too... ⚕🥁⚕
Talking from experience here...
Learning the hard way 😁😁😁
Thank you!! Nobody talks about this enough

Thx Dimitri! Hope all is well :)
Really great attention to these nuances which are typically completely overlooked.

Good advice, thanks
Wonderful thoughtful lesson Max. Thank you for the time - off to the drum set now…✌️🌻
Thank you.
Great points made here 👌🏽
Appreciate it!
Awesome lesson, Max, thanks!
I assume that I would also need to raise the snare and toms, if I raise the stool, right?
Correct!
I know stool width can...
What is this noice in the background hahah
VERY loud fan!!
