"Sitting up higher FOR ME causes a lot less back pain." What a beautiful answer. Massive respect, for all you do. 🙏

I appreciate bringing anatomy into drumming! What actually happens with your psoas major (which is the main hip flexor in the body), is that if it gets really tight it pulls on the 5 lower lumbar vertebrae, which it attaches to and creates an anterior shear force which causes back pain. So basically if you’re sitting lower on a drum throne, that muscle becomes shortened overtime and starts pulling on those lumbar vertebrae which causes low back pain.

Great topic. I can't emphasize how important it is keeping your back healthy. I had my 3rd back surgery (lumbar fusion) 2.5 years ago. That was surgery #3. Since I've had the fusion I can't play for all intents and purposes. I still play daily in hopes I'll feel my R foot again. I don't know if I'll ever get a steady gig again. It's super frustrating, but I stil feel my body may adjust (neurologically). I'm doing my best to keep good posture, and staying relaxed, although it's not always easy

    Hi, Adam, great answer.
As a (pro) physiotherapist, as well as a (non-pro) drummer, I couldn't agree more. Being both things, I can't help but notice how little this topic are present in so many drumming education videos in the net or social media, and yours is one of the best (brief) answers/explanation I've seen. Most drummers doesn't even know what our "tenderloin" (psoas) is... 😂
I would add the need of keeping your core activated, or engaged, or how you want to say it, wich, I guess, has to do with what you call "active sitting".
In fact, back in 2007-2008, when I was ending my physio studies, some mates and I made a research about drumming ergonomics, and this was one of the topics we covered. We found that sitting in a position of about 70° (+/-) of hip flexion was ideal for most subjects, and keeping activated the core is a must.
See you this Sunday in Sevilla... 🤘🏼💀

Thanks for the kind words here my friend! I never thought of the Psoas as the tenderloin, but that’s exactly what it is! Lol.
See you in Spain my friend!

Everyone obviously has their own take on said topic but I couldn't agree with you more. I started sitting low for many years and it got me by but everything that you mention had happened to me plus the fact i had horrible posture as well. Adjusting the hight of my throne to what you mentioned as well as keeping conscience of my posture helped a tremendous amount. But all them years prior to sitting correctly did take a toll on my lower back and I'm only 42.. moral of the story is take what is said here and try to apply it early on in anyone's drumming journey for it will help in the long run as well as now.

personally I like sitting higher as it allows me to angle my rack toms flatter and also makes me more comfortable on my pedals.

Two words… “Bosu ball”! I’ve recently taken up mountain biking as a hobby to help build my psoas endurance (not really, i just like riding on two wheels 😎), and I stretch those muscles every night by lying face up with the weight of my body is distributed just above the upper half of my butt and hips, and my upper back, shoulders, and head making contact with the floor (you’ll be in an arch). I also do all of my core stretches in this position as well, increasing my range of motion due to my hips being elevated. Hadn’t felt this limber in 20 years 🥳.

With 3 failed back surgeries I struggle to find anything that works, So what I been doing is sitting with my legs almost straight across with my tom’s slightly angled , this keeps me sitting up so I don’t hunch down and this helps me the most and it makes me play slower and more controlled cause I tend to play too fast, and more heels down, it takes alittle to get used to but it helps the most.

Sitting low on a throne is like the guitar equivalent of a strap below the waist ahahaha

True... i dont sit low on my throne hurts my hips & its hard to control my foot on the BD, but if i sit high i got control on my foot and my fills🥁

I can't believe how low some drummers still sit. If I sit lower, I wind up with severe pain shortly after. I can play for hours sitting up high.

It’s crazy because I have the complete opposite effect when trying to increase my thrown height.
I’ve tried sitting high but I always feel off balanced. It unfortunately makes me focus on staying on balance more than the music.

    • @AdamTuminaro
      @AdamTuminaro  2 года назад +4

Any change to your throne height will initially make you feel off balance, or at least awkward. It takes time to adapt to even the smallest change. Try a 1/4” adjustment every 2 weeks. Don’t let your first impression of a high throne dictate your seating position for the next 20 years. I promise that it’s worth the investment of time and initial discomfort.
