- Phil Easi takes on the subject on cloning cucumber plants. Can it be done? Is it really a simple free way to increase your cucumber crops? Demonstration and discussion on cloning techniques. Extra important tip discovered.
dude theyre in the same family as squash gonna try it on more youre a G
Hi Shaz, yes give it a try and let us know how it goes...may plants can be cloned this way!!
that info is gold! Thank you so much.
Hi Ozden so glad you found it helpful. Thanks for the positive comment.
Can I directly plant the stem in the potting soil?? I cut a big stem by mistake that has 4 baby cucumbers forming?
What's my best option.? Thanks
Hi Kanchan. Yes plant it directly. Just make sure the potting soil does not dry out. Dip cut end of plant into rooting hormone if you have some, it will speed up the rooting. If the leaves really start to look like they are drying out then spay them with a mist of water. Best of luck.
@@EasyGardenHacks I think my plant survived so far it's still green thanks.
@@kanchanp3966 Nice, you may see a bit of shrivel or some loss of green with a bit of time, that was normal for me. So glad to hear you are giving it a try, keep us posted thanks
I would recommend pinching off the flowers - allows it to focus on the roots
Good call, thanks for watching and your comment
Are you Canadian? I can hear the accent. Reminds me of home. I never really noticed until I moved to the US. Now every time I talk to family it’s all “a-boat” and “eh” and “buddy”. Lol.
Hi yes well done, I am. Where was home? I am in BC up in the mountains. Thanks for watching the video.
@@EasyGardenHacks From BC. Born in Surrey. Grew up in Kitimat.
@@AngelDRose Cool, have a great day
They would root much better at the node where the growth happens at. Also a pot of soil soaking in water would stimulate root growth.
I agree 100% great tips, thanks for watching
But did they take and grow? Thanks.
Ever film a follow up on how these grew?
Hi I did not unfortunately, the update is they took and grew but I had done the cloning pretty late in the season we have a early end to the season as well and they only got a couple feet tall, no big fruit. I dont know if I will need to do it this year but if I did I would as soon as I have the side shoots.
Thank god for this vid I got sciarid fly larvae eating my only cucumbers roots as I've I've started it off indoors and is pretty well grown (about 25cm tall)so I can just remove it from the soil! 😍
Hi Craig, so glad you saw the vid also, dont know about the fly larvae but it sounds bad. Well done on already being at 25 cm! Best of luck with the cloning. Extra tip if you add rooting hormone to the water, either powder or liquid this will speed things up quite a bit.
Sciarid fly larvae… aka fungus gnats. i had to look it up ❤
Thank you for this video. I plant the suckers from my tomatoes, peppers and sweet potatoes. I always had bad luck with cucumbers cuttings but I’m going to try it again this year.
Thank You!
Now I can start over,
w/jump start, w/new knowledge/awareness of vine borers and borer prevention!
Hi Honey Jackson, sorry to hear about the borers, hopfully the cloning helps, add rooting hormone if you can get you hands on it to the water for quicker/better results. Also I found the ones not in direct sunlight did better. Thanks for watching best of luck
Propagate seedless watermelons the same way. Just cut 2 nodes past flower and root in water or damp soil. Seedless melon seeds are about $1.00 each now.
Hi sharky great tip, thanks for watching and the idea
Great video! I have to try this
Hi Rob, thanks!! It is really easy, add rooting hormone if you dont want to wait the 2-3 weeks. Give it a try, very little risk for possible great reward.
So, i know you can't get seeds from an F1 hybrid cucumber, but does it propagate from cuttings just fine? Ty for the vid!
Hi Dee, yes it will propagate from the cutting even if its an F1 hybrid. What you are taking with a cutting is a clone, it will be identical to the plant you took it from. Thanks for watching
Thanks
Strange the ones in sunlight didn't root as well as those in shade.
I found a broken stem so I'm going to try to root as well.
How did the plants do over the season?
Yes I think the ones with partial shade did better because it was not as hard on the plant to transition, hard enough being chopped up, let alone left out exposed in the sun and heat...just a guess. They ended up doing the same as the others, I couldnt tell them apart at the end of the season. Best of luck. Thanks for watching and you comment
Hello. I recently collected a heirloom variety of cucumber. I did not to save seeds.
I have only one plant and it seems to be withering from the base.
Do you think i can grow another plant plant from still green and health vine endings?
Hi, yes I would clone a piece or two if you can, I did not do it in my video but if you add growth hormone (liquid or powder found a most garden stores) to the water it will increase your chances of rooting also will speed the process up quite a bit. I think it is worth a try, Best of luck!
What yield did u get from the propagated cucumber plant?
Is it the same as the mother plant or less..?
Hi great question, I should have weighed it, I feel it was similar yeilds, there was not enough difference to tell. Great idea for a possible test / video this year. Thanks for watching
I pinch the growing tips out anyway, to get suckers for higher production....i gotta try this
Hi Cristie, great to hear, thanks for watching
I accidentally cut one of my cucumbers 5” from the base and now I’m trying this jar method to try and save it. Hopefully this works 😢
Hi zinab, sorry to hear, I have done that before, try adding some nutrients to the water, I have been told it speeds up the process. Best of luck. Thanks for watching
@@EasyGardenHacks Yup I added some! I figured I should since the plant wouldn’t be getting any from the soil. It still hasn’t perked up but I’m holding hope for it. Do you think rooting hormone would help here?
@@zinabalbaiti9348 yes I would add the rooting hormone as well, keep holding hope, I found the ones I had in partial shade (under the cucumber leaves) did better than the ones in direct sun in the hoophouse.
If your existing plant is still in the ground I would leave it in and see if it will grow any more shoots, if it does you can use the new shoot as your leader or if you have suckers let them get big then try rooting them in the water hormone mixture
I would sprinkle a tiny bit of potassium nitrate into that water, so it gets potassium, to make roots with. And also, use rooting hormone... Unlike what this other guy says, fish emulsion sold in stores usually has a 5-1-1 ratio... that is not good for rooting. Potassium nitrate is much better. They sell that as a tree stump remover, but it is an awesome fertilizer, for certain things, when you aren't flowering or fruiting yet, but want growth.
Hi mercucio, thanks for the great info, I didnt know about the fish emulsion but it makes sense what you say. Potassim nitrate in water I will need to try, I have used rooting hormone with success on other plants. Thanks again for the info and watching
@@EasyGardenHacks It does not take very much. Just tiny sprinkle, to give some potassium for roots, and to help the plant to inhibit rot.
@@007mercucio thanks again for more details appreciate it
@@EasyGardenHacks If you do it too much, it could collapse the plant, so really just a grain or two.
Brilliant 👍🏻 🇬🇧
Thanks 🙏
Hi Shaun, thanks for watching and the postive comment. Have a good one
You could have cloned them much faster if you used a tiny bit of rooting hormone and a tiny bit of fish emulsion in the water. Less than half the time if I remember right and I don't change the water out. I leave them outside in a place that only gets dappled sunlight. Same process for tomatoes but even without rooting hormone they will form 5x the number of roots your cucumber had in only about 5 days! 💪
Hi Nutsack, Great tip!! I wondered about that. It makes sense that the hormone and fish could help speed it up. I will give it a try next time around. Thanks for the knowledge drop.
Does this work for all members of the cucumber family? Melons, pumpkins, squashes etc?
Ooooo9ooooii8
Thanks for the video! What kind of mulch is safe to use in my vegetable garden?
Hi sorry for taking so long to respond, summer got real fast at the end...there are many options for mulch depending on what you have around you. I use 2 year old horse manure/compost for veggies, for garlic leaves in the fall from a variety of trees (dont use walnut as can be bad for garden) and even wood chips around the berry bushes . Other options i have read about are grass clippings. Black plastic. Straw. Pine needles, Cocoa hulls. Newspaper (some dont like this one due to the ink in the soil as it breaks down). Thanks for watching and the question
@@EasyGardenHacks thanks for the info! I have another question lol. If I had some small sago palms sitting in pots with dirt can I use that dirt in my vegetable garden or is it poisonous now?
@@sweetnsalty4602 Good question, I have no direct experience with the sago palms (no palms this far north:) I did a bit a research and was not able to find any data supporting allelopathy of cycads, so from what I can tell you are able to use the soil. Best of luck.
@@EasyGardenHacks thanks 😊
Pot plant looks good as well
😉
Do you think adding a small bubbler if I do more than one sucker per jar or container? Or would that be over thought? Because I want to try this
Hi Chris, I have not tried a bubbler with cloning but understand it is to increase oxygen in the solution. I dont think it would hurt at all. I think I could have gotton away with a lot more suckers per jar. Give it a try and let me know how it turns out if you dont mind. Thanks for the question.
Can I directly plant it in the soil instead of waiting for roots..
I cut a big stem of my cucumber that had 4 cucumber babies on it...I dont want to lose it...
What are my options??
Hi see my answer in your other question. Thanks for the question. Best of luck.
