Can we just appreciate the “birds and the bees” comment with how baby cucumbers are made?! 😂 Thanks for the tips! This is my first year growing cucumbers so knowing how and what to prune is helpful.
Our garden is about one month behind due to cold June nights. Not a good growing season for us, but tomatoes are about ready. A garden never grows the same from year to year. We will take what we can get. Learning experience every year.
Good information, Luke! I pruned my Patty Pan squash and it helped keep it healthier longer. I also lucked out one morning and managed to snap a picture of an adorable bumblebee sleeping inside a squash flower.
This has been my best year ever for cucumbers, and it's a good thing, because I can chow down on 5-6 a day, just by myself. I'm eating a plate full of cukes right now!😁
I Subscribed to the MIGARDENER a long time ago & have been watching Luke for years, but i gotta say, this is the first time I chuckled out loud while watching him, as he says, "So cute, BOP, BOP, BOP". Love your content & your sense of humor! Oh, and I just ordered a bunch more seed packets to add to my seed case collection!! -> I'm gardening YEAR AROUND since I've learned to not only plant a Spring garden, but also plant a Fall garden and now gardening with Hydroponics throughout the winter! All learned from MiGardener!! Thanks so much Luke!!
I honestly did NOT know you could prune cucumbers. My mind is blown right now. I had an ok harvest for my cucumbers but i planted some i got from you. Theyre growing really fast
With all the NW Ohio rain, my cukes got mildew so bad I had to tear them out and replant. Good tips from you! I spaced further apart, will water in the morning only, and will prune for better air flow. Thanks!
I was just in the greenhouse for stage 1 swamp out , cave of cukes, hanging off the ceiling and escaping out the top . Bango ! Video ! ...and stage 2 , Angus, out
I have been harvesting cucumbers for a few weeks now. I learned to prune the plants like you are doing. I am feeding my house and my neighbors with the abundance of them this year. I strung a section of coated fencing across t-posts and let them ramble. Best year ever for them. Thanks for your info Luke.
We've had a great crop of cucumbers this year! We had three kinds: muncher, tender crisp (I think), and Poona Kheera. The Poona Kheera have produced so much! Trellising cucumbers sure makes a huge difference in production! Will have to prune some.
I've had a successful haul so far, and I've been hoping you had a video on cucumbers, because issues are starting to appear. Perfect timing, and thank you!
Learned a ton, Luke. Really liked your thoughts on pruning especially the idea of pruning to a single vine. I had wondered why some flowers didn't get cucumbers. Who knew I would be getting a lesson on the birds and the bees! 🐝
I pulled up my 1st cucumbers, they were getting crispy. I replanted to see if we could get a 2nd harvest. We had so many cucumbers the first go around that we were giving them away by the gallon bags full. Just planted enough for salads and such this time. I've canned all the pickles I need.
I wish I was your neighbor. I had 1 or 2 cucumbers and 1 zucchini. Pathetic! Out of 15 tomato plants I had enough for 2 mediumish bowls of salsa. Nothing did well so far. The potato plants did not develop properly, will see what the sweet potatoes are going to be doing. Onions didn't grow their leaves even..... so bad. I had a few peppers 3 small Japanese eggplant from 3 plants. I spent a lot of money on raise beds and soil and was a bust so far.🥴
@camicri4263, I put in some new beds this year and found the new soil wasn’t very fertile. I think it included too much wood chip that wasn’t broken down enough, locking up the nitrogen. I fertilized heavily and had success, but nothing like my old beds. Maybe some extra fertilizer will help your beds too. Best of luck!
I did not know you could prune off the leaves that look unhealthy to make your cucumbers produce more. Thank you for the tip. I will share this video with others.
I really appreciate your videos and all the tips you provide! You explain things really well and make it easy for an amateur like me to understand. Keep up the good work!
I needed this info, Luke! Thanks! I have only three cucumber plants (I'm north of Toronto) planted in the ground (I tried in containers last year and only harvested TWO cukes, LOL) and the season has been very wet. I do need to do some pruning! They have been producing well, so far! Two or three nice sized fruits every other day! I have enjoyed MANY cucumber sandwiches, and given away quite a few to neighbours. (They appreciate them FAR more than Zucchini! LOL) Last week I made a large batch of sweet cucumber relish which turned out GREAT! I'm well on the way to cooking up a second batch. Thanks so much for your video and advice!
I pruned my early summer cukes this year and ended up giving a ton away, made several batches of dehydrated cucumber chips and almost 100 jars of relish. Unfortunately, here in the Southeast, we end up with pickle worms if we try for a second planting.
Did not know cucumbers had both male and female flowers. This is my first year growing cucumbers in raised beds. They are thriving and the timing of this video was perfect. Confirmed a few things I was doing and answered many questions I had too! You are my go-to gardener on you tube, thanks for all you do! I also looove Michigan and hope to visit your store in the near future!
I planted my first garden this year. I have 3 cucumber plants growing. There are lots of male flowers but no female flowers yet. I have done some light pruning to remove the yellowing leaves. Don’t know what I am doing wrong to not have fruit but the vines are still beautiful! 😂😂
This has been an awesome year for cucumbers. I have canned tons of pickles and relishes this year. Salads have been abundant as well. We've had so many that our chickens are eating cucumbers everyday too lol. I didn't even really think about pruning them, but they are doing the same as yours. Tomorrow is pruning day!
Thank you so much for the tip. In years past I've struggled have a large cucumber yield. This year, I've paid more attention to pruning leaves and "exposing" the flowers to the bees so they can have easy access to pollinating the flowers and provide increased airflow. Great video!
My first year trellising my picklers , I never have any luck with cukes but this year they are doing really good all thanks to your videos.... your my go to Thanks a Bunch!!
Great info! I’m not so good at pruning enough. So thank you for the motivation! (I’ll prune my cucumbers today) I have definitely got some fungus on my cucumbers, cantaloupes, and zucchinis. I’ve been pruning the others but I find it difficult to keep up. I tend to start my cucumbers later in June in MI (usually my last plant to get in). It’s my goal next year to get them in a little earlier.
Luke, I do container gardening, and when I grow my cucumbers, I do them from my deck, and they grow to hang down vs. climbing up. I've never pruned so I am going to try that but wondering your thoughts on that? Has anyone else done this.
Share this video? I share your videos with everybody!!! I only have 4 videos I watch regularly and when they’re over I think “ Oh darn, it’s over already. So I have to watch more. MI Gardner, homesteading Family, RoseRed homestead, The Seasonal Homestead. ❤❤❤❤
You recently did a video on zucchini late season, can you do the same with cucumbers? It truly has been a great year for cucumbers, I can’t eat all of them, nor give them away. I have my last batch of pickles going, and what is left I chop up for the chickens. But having them going into fall would be a treat.
My garden has struggled this year but for some reason, the cucumbers, both burbless and Poinsett were in abundance. The fungal infections hit hard. spraying help. But pruning would have been a much better way to go. I will have to do that. I prune pumpkins and pretty aggressively.
A tip: Don't use sulphur fungicide on cucurbits. It's generally incompatible and will burn your leaves to a crisp. 😵💫 I'm pretty lucky, my plants recovered, and I'm finally getting cucumber production!
I am growing couple of plants in my greenhouse in the UK. Left each with few branches. I have cut the tops off when they reached the roof. However I often leave a foot long branch (a sucker) on each node and then cutting off the rest.On this way I get few cucumbers out of each branch and in the same time don't allow my plants to get too bushy.
bop bop bop. last year I did bush cucumbers, but chose another variety this year - I've only had three cucumbers so far. I never even considered hand pollination. all of my fruit so far has been eaten by a hungry nightime animal. spraying a homemade solution has given me one uneaten one so far - any advice on what to spray to keep the critters out would be great!!!
Ok so when you have no bees around to pollinate, and it’s terribly hot (Arizona), what do you suggest? I have my plant with a shade cover but I just don’t see bees. Same for my pole beans, beautiful plant, 2 beans. I’m used to lovely Oregon gardens and am having a difficult time in Az.
First time growing cucumbers & they are producing, start out green but as they grow they are turning white, some on just one side. I did add potting soil around the plants roots as best I could after noticing they were getting white. Could this be caused by not pruning & airflow that you mentioned in the video? Maybe I need to pick them sooner when they are small. Any advice would be much appreciated. They are growing in the garden on the ground, did not trellis them. They are pickling cucumbers. Think it is too late now to try to grow them upright on a stick or trellis?
Luke, I was wondering how many female flowers can you hand pollinate with a male flower. I don't want to take all of my male flowers off so the bees will have some to do there job.
I use some composter to put in my pots and plant my flowers this year and had what I thought grew out of. It was zucchinis then I went to cucumbers and they turned out to be cantaloupes. Isn’t that weird? Just had a compost. I use some composter to put in my pots and plant my flowers this year and had what I thought grew out of. Hey man..any idea why my Boston pickling variety look all yellow and stubby? I don't over water but they look like little squash. I can't attach pictures but they look weird lol
My Straight 8 plants are dying before they even make female flowers. In contrast, my pickling cukes are doing well, albeit slower than normal. I don't know whats going on with the Straight 8s.

hi migardener 🤗
im pruning cucumber leaves today because they are blocking the sun from reaching other plants in my raised bed. tfs
Best cucumber harvest yet for the third time growing big. First time fermenting them with some spicy peppers. Amazing!

Thank you, my cucumbers are going crazy! I didn't give them enough height to climb. Already pulled about 25lbs easily, but sometimes hard to see.
Airflow, I never knew it was such a concern, thanks for the tips!

110 today here in Dallas. No rain since April. Cucumbers (2nd planting) look like toast. Think it’s time to plant again.

Hi! I'm so glad I found you! You are a wealth of information!! I needed this content today about cucumbers!! I'm in zone 10a in Southern California
Can I compost the cucumber leaves that are showing fungal spots?
I tried this hack last year was amazed at the affects ❤
I really enjoyed this thanks

Thanks, I learned two new things about cucumbers I did not know before...do you have tips for Tomatillo plants...they are a mess in my garden!
Can cucumber leaves that still look green and healthy go in compost? Same Q for melon vines when suckers are pruned out?
Thank you!
Thank you, always learn something
Great video! I had no idea! I will put this into practice next year. Thanks! :)
Very interesting Luke, I'm seeing the dreaded squash bugs!
Please make a video how to fertilize cucumbers plants
Thank you
This is my go to channel for learning :))
Understand pollination now!! Wow!!

Ahhh thank you good to know
I use a mixture of mostly water with peroxide and a bit of baking soda. It kills existing fungus and prevents new. And it basically costs nothing.
I’m so happy for this video cuz I’m always afraid of pruning the wrong parts 😳
I am growing couple of plants in my greenhouse in the UK. Left each with few branches. I have cut the tops off when they reached the roof. Should you compost the leaves with fungus spots or are you better off just burning them?
Every time I watch your channel end up, running outside and pruning. Lol.
Hey. I pruned my plant today, and whattayouknow, a bee was able to come in and pollinate. I already have 2 cucumbers growing
it's been raining a lot here too

Beryl may be pruning mine for me.
Luke, I was wondering how many female flowers can you hand pollinate with a male flower. I don't want to take all of my male flowers off so the bees will have some to do there job.
Do you compost those leaves or throw them out separately?
We compost them :)
What do you spray with to protect from fungus?
A baking soda spray. It works well!
can i put the fungal spot pruned leaves in my compost bin?
You don’t want to add the disease to your compost
I use some composter to put in my pots and plant my flowers this year and had what I thought grew out of. It was zucchinis then I went to cucumbers and they turned out to be cantaloupes. Isn’t that weird? Just had a compost. I use some composter to put in my pots and plant my flowers this year and had what I thought grew out of. Try the BEIT ALPHA variety. Sweet, thin skinned, and burpless --- but the best part, it does't need to be pollinated!
My Straight 8 plants are dying before they even make female flowers. In contrast, my pickling cukes are doing well, albeit slower than normal. I don't know whats going on with the Straight 8s.
Try soyo long cucumbers. Nothing seems to bother them, they are burpless and don't attract beetles. They are delicious!
Can we compost leaves?
You don’t want to add the disease to your compost.
My cucumber plants have had male flowers for weeks and no female flowers. Is there anything I can do to get female flower production started?
Try growing parthenocarpic cucumbers. They are cucumber varieties which don't require pollination to produce cucumbers.
I think over prune my cucumbers, i even but the sun leaf. Will it still live? 😢😢😢
I prune mine
"Bop, bop, bop" is the technical terminology, right? 😂🐝🏵❤
My cucumbers plants are really bad. I've cut a lot brown leaves off. Did put up 8pts of pickle relish the other day.
What is your solution for this?
Does anyone know how to get rid of the zucchini bugs from my soil?
I think if deer are hungry enough they eat anything. My cucumber and zucchini leaves have been eaten completely down. The plants struggled so much!
Too much development in my area - land is cleared and houses go up.
Anyone has tips to grow cucumbers? Please share.
I have tried a few seasons now - all my cucumber plants died due to cucumber beetles- bacteria wilt disease.
Get the soyo long variety. They are great plus burpless and don't attract cucumber beetles. Win win!

How to keep the mildew off .
Try whey mixed 50/50 with water
I used a mixture of 30% cows milk and 70% water (act was probably 40/60) and sprayed on all my leaves top and bottom and it took care of the mildew in pretty much 1 spraying. Had to back next day and do a couple of them a second time ...but it worked! 😊
I just watched this, I was wondering what to do with my plants, they are a mess right now
Bop Bop Bop :)
Don't forget to disinfect your pruning tool after pruning diseased plants - even between individual cucumber plants (which is impossible so I just do it frequently while pruning) I'm a little surprised he didn't mention it.
I was going to state just that! That might have been why so many of his leaves were Infected with the fungus.
