Excellent presentation! English is my second language and I was pleasantly surprised to understand everything in detail. No where else I could find such a thorough explanation about all parts of the plant, the pollination and tips about healthy growth and rich harvest. Thank you so much!!
You are my go to master gardener. Your presentations are always excellent, informative and easy to understand. Thank you for all you do for us aspiring to have healthy and productive gardens.
Like a Bob Ross of gardening. I appreciate the clean and simple explanations and step-by-step you give. Thank you for making gardening easy to understand for this ADHD mind of mine. Lol
After more than 40 years of growing my own vegetables I am still looking for tips to improve my gardening I love this video. You explain every detail very clearly and wisely. One thing that I plan to do next year is to include some flowers in my veggie garden to attract more pollinators to my cucumber plants. This year was the first time that I did staggered planting of my indeterminate English cucumbers. 3 weeks after planting my first set of seedlings that I raised indoors, I put more seeds in between the already growing vines on each side of my arched trellis. After watching your video I realized that I should have planted the seedlings on just one side of the trellis and later planted the seeds directly in the ground on the other side of the arched trellis. Regardless of my mistake, I am enjoying a second harvest. I am doing the same staggering with my pole green beans.
Try borage! I hardly ever saw bees in my garden (other pollinators but not bees) until I planted borage. Now they're everywhere and everything is well-pollinated. Borage is also edible and medicinal.
I never knew about pinching off suckers in a cucumber plant. Thanks for the tips Gardener Scott. I have planted lots of cosmos and other flowers to bring in more pollinators.
I want to echo others' comments that this was the most thoroughly explained video on the growing habit of cucumbers. I knew there were two basic types of cucumbers, but I never understood what the difference between a slicing and a pickling cucumber was. Equipped with the information you have given me I'll have more success in the garden.
i learned a ton from your video; pinching out new branches, keeping lower branches and leaves off the ground, growing vertically, improving air circulation. I love cukes and didn't know that hidden maturing cukes would shut my plants down. This gives me hope that i will have a better crop this year. Thanks!
I’m back for a refresher course. I had my best cucumber harvest last year after listening to your advice. This year, starting tomorrow, I’ll plant my succession cucumbers.
Thank you for your help,I love growing my own vegetables, it’s my favorite hobby and the vegetables seem to taste more better than store bought ones,,haha, just fun going out to your own garden and finding some wonderful veggies!, the pruning is one thing I am just learning, and have been wondering how to do,,so thanks again ❤ North Carolina girl,
Thank you so much gardener Scott! Your tip on hidden cucumber was spot on! My plant is now 5 foot long with many small cucumbers, growing and more blooms coming, but plant the is starting to yellow. After watering your video yesterday, I just found a large overgrown cucumber fruit at the beginning of the plant hidden in grass! I picked it and hope the production will continue. Thanks! 🙏
Last year was my first time growing vegetables, pickling cucumbers were my most successful one and they gave me the taste of freshness that I have never experienced before. I will use your wonderful tips this year to have better and more harvest. Thank you!
Perfect timing. We had a downpour of rain today and the cukes got knocked down. Now I realize that the reason they fell is because of the over growth of the suckers. They are short enough still that it is fixable. Thanks Scott. Really appreciate all your info.
I just want to say THANK YOU Gardener Scott! I love going back to these videos as a guide. I am planning on starting some cucumbers from seed today and I have a new bed with a similar setup as yours to eventually plant them in. Your vids are so informative and inspiring. CHEERS!
So glad I got to watch this video. Second year gardener and I lost my cucumber plants the first year . This year I’m trellising and they are looking great at , however , I hadn’t realized the pruning / suckers / etc and I’m thinking I would’ve run into trouble again . Thankful to have run into this video . Now to go prune and start another succession planting 😂
Thanks Scott for the first video I’ve seen that explains and shows, the benefits of pruning cucumbers. In the past I gave up pruning down low, as I was just guessing, and ended up with a lot of short growth flopping on the ground. Apart from the short growth looking sick and not producing much fruit, it’s far harder to pick the produce.
Thanks Scott…been busy pruning my indeterminate tomatoes…now it’s off to the cucumbers…We really appreciate all your helpful hints! George from Danbury, CT USA
Thank you for all of information. God bless you. Bcz of you I did true gardening this year. I have opo squash, martini cucumber, zucchini, peppers, mint, peas, tomato’s and so on. Watching all of this growing every day, I always remember you. And thanks that day when I subscribe your channel.
Been growing Marketmore for several years. I used to grow Straight Eights. I like Marketmore just a little more. I do 2 vertical plantings. Plenty for us and sharing. Yes, pruning is a must.
Thanks so much! I have an unheated hoophouse this year, and I'm going to start an early planting of armenians and persians in 10gal growbags with a net trellis, then have 2 more successions outdoors. I will certainly be pinching suckers!
Thank goodness for a video telling me it is okay to prune cucumbers!! This year I am growing vertical using the cow panel method. I am using an Aluminet 40% shade cloth this year and I am noticing the most prolific growth ever in my cucumbers. Despite directing vines to the cow panel they are crowding neighboring plants. I already have cukes - and so many flowers! Low growing, flowering herbs, such as thyme, might be good to grow next to the cucumbers for pollination as well.
Enjoyed your video. So much good stuff. Growing vertically is the way to go. Cannot emphasize enough the aggressive picking to keep plant going as you said. Good advise and tips, Gardner Scott. Thank you very much!
Thank you for such a wonderful presentation. I have been growing cucumbers for quite sometime now and I’m still learning. I appreciate the detail and educational information. 🌿🌾🙌
My single seed challenge this year was a Boothby Blonde variety. This was my 3 year trying to grow this and by far my most successful even though I didn't follow any of these tips. I plan to let at least one cuke on the vine until it yellows to save some seeds and try it again next season adding what I learned in this video. Thanks.
Wow, fantastic timing! I just planted lemon cucumber and market more 76 cucumber seeds 4 days ago. I planted both of these earlier this year and just did OK. Figured I’d give it another try and see if the fall here in the Florida is better to grow these types of cucumbers. Thank you for posting such an informative video. I enjoy your channel very much.
best tutorial... been watching tons of how-tos and Gardener Scott you a natural born teacher... great simple and thorough explanations...that makes it easy to understand. New subscriber and total respect!
Magnificent! We just planted some late season cucumbers, they are growing in our gardens and hoping to grab a harvest before the first freeze. Thank you Scott!
I do not have enough bees in my area to polinate anything...so I pollinate my cucumbers myself by rubing the stamin of the male flower onto the pistal of the female ...I carefully pluck away the male flower petals and hold onto just the center stamen then I insert that into the female center and rub it around a bit..the pollen gets transfered and i ALWAYS get cucumbers that way. Bees are becoming more and more scarce so this tip might help some of your growers.. It helps my crop 100%
I did grow tomatoes last year my first time cherry tomatoes and it was great my very first time I'm trying cucumbers now and I learned a lot thank you 💯🙏
It's easy to get more cucumbers than one knows what to do with. My favorites are the Asian/Japanese cucumbers, they are so fresh and crunchy tasting, but also juicy. I find that some of the best varieties of vegetables/fruits are the Japanese varieties.
The Japanese cukes are the best for me too. Crunchy, long, excellent taste... drizzle them with vinaigrette dressing -or- marinade them in the dressing first thing and eat for dinner. Glorious cukes! However, any irregular watering of this veggie can cause cukes to be bitter. It will ruin the taste and you'd toss them to the pigs. This year, I decided to grow Suyo Long and Lemon cukes -- the latter as an insurance. The Lemon variety is prolific and I harvest everyday to enjoy the crunch and the fresh taste!
Love it, thank you for the tips! Been growing cucumbers for a couple seasons now and they produce a surprising amount. Trying to get as much out of them as possible.
🥒🥒🥒 I like the way you have conclusions tips at the end. Yes. I will start overlap my plants in my vege garden so I can have it through Summer and Authum. Thank you. 🤠HappyFeeet.NZ
I made every mistake he mentioned when growing cucumbers this year, but I still got a ton of cucumbers to harvest. I found one hidden in tall grass that was 18" long.
With being so busy mine have not been pruned and its affected the plants they have sprawled everywhere. now the wedding is out of the way I will be able to get to the garden and sort it out
Thank you so much!!! This is my first year growing cucumbers and I am so excited to try these tips out and see a great harvest in my first attempt. Here's hoping!
Great video! Thanks for sharing your cuke tips. I never thought about pruning them like that. Definitely going to do that this summer. Your voice and enunciation are great for videos!
So happy to have found you after years of watching gardening videos! I am in Colorado Springs, and our climate is just not like Michigan, Arkansas, or California! You are now my LOCAL guy for growing in this region. Thank you, oh, and is the Galileo garden you talk about at East Middle School?
I to am putting the clips to other use other than"tomatoes", Suppose "tomato clips" will be used for everything but for use to the tomato plants. Thank you for the teaching Sir
Very informative review on the cucumber! I learned something new. Thank you! I wish vining varieties would make a note on thier packs a little better. It is kind of confusing. I've always considered building a towering style bed just for cucumbers to rain down. But never came up with a solid plan. But with today's technology of auto timers and auto waterers well, I might have to reconsider that this year. It would save me half a day working on cucumbers.

we;re having pollinator problems in lower MI this spring.. I'm finding withered female flower at the tip of the fruit with males just above the female. We had a mild winter by our standards,so we have plenty of the bad bugs.
Excellent presentation!

I feel like I'm in a gardening class 😆. Thank you Gardener Scott for your expert tips.
You are a wonderful teacher. If you were my instructor in college I may have stuck around.
You are the only one talking real beneficial information. Thank you.
Very helpful! This might be the first successful year for cucumbers in my garden. I’ve tried for 3 years; Third time’s the charm!
I really enjoy meeting you in the garden, Mr Scott. Thank you for the channel.

Been thinking about whether or not to prune the suckers. After watching this, I’m on my way out the door with pruners in hand. Nice video!
It's the same with tomatoes.
I’m back for a refresher course. I had my best cucumber harvest last year after listening to your advice. This year, starting tomorrow, I’ll plant my succession cucumbers.

This was very helpful in understanding plant anatomy and growing tips.
The best video ive seen on the subject. Thank you gardner Scott .

You can self pollinate just like squash plants. I've done it. I grow bush cukes because of my setup.
What a great teacher you are! Very thorough and concise. Im subscribed!!!
Thanks! Welcome to the channel!
Very informative and very helpful. Thank you so much Garner Scott! I'm going to prune those suckers and put some flowers around!
Thanks!
Thanks, Paul! I really appreciate that!
You looked like Jeff Bridges in the thumbnail
The best video on cucumbers ive seen, thank you!
I absolutely love the Beit Alpha cucumber both for production and quality.
I'm growing those this year. Already enjoying cucs!
Very informative review on the cucumber! I learned something new. Thank you! I wish vining varieties would make a note on thier packs a little better. It is kind of confusing. Lovely vid! And LOVE the thumbnail😂😂😂 CUCS? Count us in!
Dear G.S, Peace and thank you for the videos. Just an update. I've got tons of aphid eggs (I think) on my cucs, but my cucumber season is coming to an end here. There are tons of tiny, black dots and the leaves are all dying, but that's normal for August. I only had enough for five pickling jars this year, but I did see a few different types of lady bugs towards the end of the season. My two good things this time are that my vanilla orchids, which I had on life support for almost a year, are much healthier and happier. My second is that I was able to start my first gallon of watermelon wine yesterday! I even made the yeast, and I used mostly things from my garden to make it. I also pickled some watermelon rind!
So helpful. Thank you for taking the time to make this clear and concise video!
I loved your tip on growing flowering plants by your veggies 2 attract polinators👍
Lambs Ear is a great plant to attract pollinators to your garden.
I enjoy the way you teach. I love learning 😊
we;re having pollinator problems in lower MI this spring.. I'm finding withered female flower at the tip of the fruit with males just above the female. We had a mild winter by our standards,so we have plenty of the bad bugs.
put some in a hanging basket on my patio this year- trying to get things in as many places as I can and trying new things after 45 years lol
You really have a great way of explanation, thank you!
