    If you think Doom's soundtrack is good to listen to, listen to it while you're playing Doom. It hits you on a whole new level. There is a reason why the only thing the demons fear is you.

    The thing I find most interesting about djent, at least how Mick Gordon plays it, is that the guitar work is honestly way more chill-looking than the intense shredding from other metal styles, despite sounding way more aggressive. Like...the word that comes to mind when I listen to this song is _toothy._

    If nothing else, you really owe it to yourself to watch the intro sequence for Doom. Establishes the human element as far as antagonists go in an attempt to "justify" using Hell as an energy source, illustrates the sheer contempt the player character has for said antagonist (Doomslayer says nothing the entire game but has the most expressive arms and camera movements I've seen in an FPS) and then transitions into one of Mick's beats comes in, have a title drop and then ends abruptly as is Mick's style, but the beat is carried on perfectly one last time in the form of Doomslayer cocking his shotgun. It's so freaking cool.

      We also get some subtle character building for the Slayer, where Hayden makes the excuse that everything was for the betterment of mankind. Except, laying there under the communicator is a dead scientist, and the Slayer clearly doesn't like that, cracking his knuckles and obliterating the communication device. Great way to show early on that the Slayer clearly has it out for anyone who abuses humanity.

    Soooo, doom and doom eternal both have adaptive music, it was created to be mixed together, rise and fall with the intensity of combat, so the songs heard on album are rarely the same that you have in game ;) that became Mick's challenge as he had to port his music to song format !

    • @ChirdXtreme
      @ChirdXtreme 2 года назад

      Yeah that's why the album versions have some unsatisfying endings sometimes. In game it just sort of blends between clips from various songs. The best early game example is the first gore nest you find. It's just chill ambient and then the second you grab the heart out of it and smash it in your hand everything just goes insane and the music fires off into Rip and Tear and it's just head banging while slaying demons. Man I need to play that game again :-D

    For a more fast paced track like this one, BFG 10k from Doom Eternal is so sick. The original BFG Division was super good but the "sequel" skips almost all of the building and is just pure adrenaline packed into a much shorter track. Cultist Base from the same game is kind of a mix of the two, but has some of his best riffs from all of his tracks imo. Loving the reactions man, keep it up!

    It's honestly a damn shame that extenuating circumstances resulted in Mick only being able to personally mix two of Doom Eternal's tracks. Imagine what we could've gotten if he'd been able to finish Super Gore Nest, or BFG 10,000, or Gladiator. Of course, Koma's done a damn good job with what they had to work with, but they didn't get it from the source.
    Alas, at least he managed to get out arguably the two best tracks in the base game.

    Don't forget that the music adjusts to what you are doing in the game. Out of the game you are listening to something more static. In game it flows with you. THIS is the reason Doom got rewards for its soundtrack. Not just the music being good itself, but its unique implementation. This does only concern Doom 2016 though. Doom Eternal suffered in many departments and the soundtrack got the worst of it. Hell, mixing was done by some random dudes, not by Mick. Plus the ingame implementation was oversimplified.

    Mick Gordon at the time of Doom reboot went against the grain and the philosophy of game music as well, which is "the music suppose to be part of the ambience less it distract player from the action". Mick went the opposite way with balistic music to enhance and sync the player with action, mixing up different buildups to keep the player in action in and out of combat. The success of Doom 2016 is impossible without Doom soundtrack which both the devs and fan agree on.
