Soundgarden lead singer Chris Cornell wrote this about how he suffered from a severe case of depression during his teenage years, rarely leaving the house. At one point, he spent a whole year without leaving his house, during which time he would play drums and guitar. Cornell told Artist Direct in a 2012 interview that the song is "about waking up and realizing you're in a dark period of your life."
Chris made this song after coming out a dark spell of depression. He waited to record it till then so it would portray how he felt. This video really speaks that
Sheer genius. Great reaction to a great song, equal band. This era was so important to me, bands as Soundgarden, KoRn, FNM; I miss them. Raw and real and genuine. Thanks Millie
Millie I think that everyone in your life that loves you is easily brought to smiles when you're happy and just as easily brought to tears when you're hurting
Chris Cornell was the only musician in history with the versatility to go from being an icon for Seattle Grunge to a James Bond theme creator. He was the John Lennon of our time. Rest in peace, Legend.
There are many dark telegraphed lines, but for some reason the hardest hitting one for me is "hands are for shaking, not tying". Considering the method he chose... Yeah...
All of Chris' songs are personal which is why so many of his songs touch on the dark side of life. People are drawn to this music because many of us can empathise with the pain he feels because we feel similar.
Love this song/album/group/Chris. It's one of the songs I remember where I was the first time I heard it. I was in college and already a fan of Soundgarden. I was on "spring break" in 1994 (meaning I was at home working because I had no $), and this song came on the radio when I was in my room. Blown away immediately. So glad you loved it too,
Its tough to listen to any Soundgarden or Cornell song now and not just get caught up with some kind of emotion, speaks to how great he was as a song writer and performer. Saw them back in 1992 and can vividly remember the performance 32 years later.
I can’t remember whether I was lucky enough to see Soundgarden live two or three times. Been to hundreds of concerts and remembering how many times I saw any band is usually fuzzy at best, haha. They were a great band to see in person. We only get one life. And it is ours. It belongs to no one else. Sometimes people want us to do things because it may be in our best interest, or at least they think so. Sometimes people want us to do things for their own selfish interests. But no matter what it is, and no matter what the reason, people need to realize that at the end of the day each person belongs to themselves and what they choose is their own, too. We may have certain responsibilities. We may have certain desires. We may have several things influencing every single decision we make. We may want what seems best for those we care about. But ultimately we each have to do what we feel is right for ourselves. And those around us shouldn’t make us feel like that isn’t the case. Sometimes we have to disappoint others in order to keep our own ships pointed in the right direction for us. It is unavoidable. You can’t always please others, no matter how hard you try. We’re only going once around the ride. And we should enjoy it as best we can. We’re all going to die one day, and we should all hope to have as few regrets as possible when our time comes. Do what you think is right for you, because it is your time to spend how you see fit. Give some to those you care about if they’re trying to be just as giving, but keep some for yourself. It doesn’t belong to anyone but you.
BEAUTUFUL!!! This is exactly who TOOL is to us. Every song can take you somewhere for you to heal and grieve. They are a TOOL for your progress in life.
A great emotional song with Chris' incredible vocals and Kim Thayil's fantastic guitar work. Try the "Spoonman" mv, fun and upbeat! Applaud your strength to stay true to yourself, Millie. 🙌
Everybody who has lived has experienced times when everything in life was bleak and dire... that is why 'Fell on black days'...resonated w/ millions of fans worldwide... Chris Cornell struggled w/ depression and it ultimately took his life... It's now obvious from songs he had written, like 'The day I tried to live' ... 'Let me drown' ... 'Like suicide'... 'Pretty noose' ... 'Blow up the outside world'... (by Soundgarden) as well as 'Like a stone' ... 'Show me how to live' (by Audioslave) By all accounts, he was doing well in 2017 but clearly, something in him broke one night and he took his own life... leaving behind a devastated wife and kids. A truly sad tragedy...
Millie, I loved your interpretation. I felt the same thing with the song. I think this also applies to many relationships too. At least it feels like this with one of mine. Much love, glad you’re living for yourself and feel free to be yourself. ❤
I have found myself in a similar situation as you described but it came to a point where I had to draw a line in the sand and like you said you have to say enough is enough and tell those people that you're not going to just sit back and take it we have to say enough is enough even if it hurts like hell at first but i have come to find out that in the end distancing from that situation and those people was the best thing that could have happened because i am in a better place now physically and mentally. So i can totally relate to where you're coming from Millie, we have to be strong for ourselves and just press on. Since having stood my ground and moved forward i have started writing lyrics for music and it's just like the words flow freely where as before it was like I couldnt find the words to express myself so i know that i made the decision because now i can express myself creatively and am in a better position all the way around.
Great song and great reaction. It's hard to be held up as the one who is always expected to be strong and help everyone else, while you're not allowed to have any of your own issues that you might need help with.
I can relate to how you feel. It feels like a weight that you can’t drop. Chris couldn’t take it anymore. But we can learn from his tragic fate and shed the crap that we get from people and move on.
Live your life the way u want...my mother .told.me.once live life as much as you can to the fullest...no one has the promise of tommorrow...live you life on ur terms young lady...rip ma....thanks for your wisdom...cheers feom kansas city
Trying to live up to expectations of others will destroy you. I gave up on that years ago and got to the point that I don't GAF anymore. A much better life.
The most important thing I've realized is that we all share the exact same core being, the unconditional "I Am," and everything after that is the ego or conditioned personal identity. It can be very difficult to relate with someone's ego once you've seen through that level of being. Sometimes it's better to just let them go and hope that they wake up, and try not to fall back asleep into the hypnosis of ego.
Everyone fails at being who they're supposed to be. The measure of a person is how well they succeed at being who they are. Yes I quoted Thor's mom. But it's so true.❤😂
Ab"soul"utely concur as I've felt this and walked out of bad relations with people who I thought were friends. When my character came into question, is when I found out how none of them stood in my defense as certainly I've been there for them. I did my best for fears of letting them down when all they ever did was let me down. Chance after chances I've given them opportunity only to do more of the same. I once believed friends were meant to be for life. I'm happy to say that since I've left them in the past, I'm doing very well after having reconnected with myself as opposed to whoever else they expected me to be, in which case I never was.
2 years ago I know you reacted to " Like A Stone" with Audio Slave that Chris Cornell also led after Soundgarden. One of the first times you cried you said. I said then that most of his songs dealt with depression till depression took his life.
I know what you are going through. It takes time to understand how it's the right thing for you and it'll never be ok, but it's ok. The future starts to look brighter.
I believe this song is a hard honest look at yourself, when what you thought of yourself and how things are in life turned out not to be quite true. Takes a level of maturity to see those things and not to blame others for this.
Millie...if you have not listened to Audioslave, then it's time. Start with "Shadow On the Sun"...then listen to all of their albums. Best tip this week.
No one can be expected to carry everyone’s burdens nor can they be expected to solve everyone’s problems. It is great to be able to be a rock to lean on for your loved ones however it is human nature to become dependent. Cutting away that weight should not be seen as a bad thing. Those that are dependent need to learn to rely on themselves. If you are trying to carry and fix everything for others it will only destroy you and they will not flourish either. Do good in your life and be patient. People can change for the better and those relationships can be repaired if they become worth having again.
Yeah, monetary supported relatives and so on throughout the pandemic with money, groceries, and so forth. They started asking for more and more. I finally said no more, now I'm the outcast after 4 years of keeping them from going homeless...that's the thank you I got.
Just so you know, a “remaster” is taking the exact same master tape as the original version and making a new master of it with better equipment, software, and techniques. It is not a different version of a song/album. “Mastering” basically means applying EQ tweaks, perhaps compression and/or limiting, things like that to a finished mix. When remastering you take the original mix and do what you consider to be a better job at making a new master of it. Nothing about the recorded performance itself is different. Typically this is done because we’re able to do a better job of making things sound better with newer equipment and technology compared to the equipment that was used before, such as better digital transfer electronics. The goal being to make that original master sound better than it could back then, though sometimes this job is done horribly and the earlier one still sounds better in many ways. And this means that “remastering” does not apply to this case here. I believe what we see and hear here is actually a live recording from when they recorded the video. And a “remix” is when you go back further in the recording timeline than the original master tape and go back to the multitrack recordings where you may have several different takes of the various instrumental and vocal tracks and you pick and choose which takes or snippets to use, sometimes also recording completely new takes or new parts, and incorporating those into the song. You can change how loud or quiet the different pieces are relative to one another, and how things are edited and sewn together. Sometimes these are done selecting all the original takes, but making what seems to be a better volume balance between the various instruments or voices. Or it can be drastically different with many different parts being chosen. That’s a remix. And if I’m wrong about this being a live recording from the day of filming, it is also possible/probable that this is a remix with different takes used than what is heard on the original album version, but recorded during the same recording sessions as what we hear on the album.
Black Sabbath with Dio Lady Evil There’s a place just south of Witches Valley Where they say the wind won’t blow And they only speak in whispers of her name There’s a lady they say who feeds the darkness It eats right from her hand With a crying shout, she’ll search you out And freeze you where you stand
I don’t know why they did a different version for the video but the album version of this song is far better. Nothing wrong with this one, but the studio version shows his vocals a bit better.
I'm sorry to hear that undo pressure was placed upon you. That is unfair. I hope all is well now! As for the song, my take on the lyrics is in regards to mental anguish.
singer, bassist, musician....I can.t carry a note in a bucket. your opinion is better than mine. I must trust your judgement. I thought I like soundgarden for their music. clearly I was wrong. I needed a singer, bassist, musician to explain to me what an a.hole I am

Life’s been rough on transformative vocalists of my youth.

Chris Cornell was the only musician in history with the versatility to go from being an icon for Seattle Grunge to a James Bond theme creator. He was the John Lennon of our time. Rest in peace, Legend.
Chris played his last song here in Detroit and my cousin was there. Rest in peace to such a legend. Music never dies.
This is the first time the real meaning of this song hit me. I feel so sad that he was telegraphing his later decision.
There are many dark telegraphed lines, but for some reason the hardest hitting one for me is "hands are for shaking, not tying". Considering the method he chose... Yeah...
I'm older than the grunge era but enjoyed it.
Cornell and Staley were the voices, imo.
Chris had overwhelming talent.
one of my fave Soundgarden songs! ♥
All of Chris' songs are personal which is why so many of his songs touch on the dark side of life. People are drawn to this music because many of us can empathise with the pain he feels because we feel similar.
One of my favourite Soundgarden songs!

Think you do a great job on these reactions. Love your energy and positive vibes.

Thanks for sharing Millie, you're the best!
And the Patreon song outro pops! Has a nice Hole meets Matthew Sweet vibe.

I could really RELATE and FEEL this song when it came out, I related it to a "HEARTBREAK" I was going 💔 through/ dealing with
Chris had a generational voice.
Thank you for showing me this video!😅I’m a new fan of NIN, only going back ten months…🌿🌸

I am an alcoholic and I am changed when I'm drinking. My oldest daughter is in rehabilitation due to heroin and fentanyl. Great video girlie.
IF you like Chris's singing, he really shine with Audioslave on "Like a Stone," and "Be Yourself," both of which are masterpieces.
The lyrics has some real deep inner soul searching.

I love your hair like this
This song feels (to me) like Chris Cornell wanted to write a song about how depression feels. He really pegged it, I think. ❤
The most important thing I've realized is that we all share the exact same core being, the unconditional "I Am," and everything after that is the ego or conditioned personal identity.

Check out 'The day I tried to live' by Soundgarden... 🔥🔥🤘🤘incredible bass from Ben Shepherd of Soundgarden...

Hi, Millie!
You asked for songs:
Instrumental - Budos Band “Old Engine Oil”, Dark - Lush -“Undertow”, Indie - Sky Cries Mary - “Shipwrecked”
I know what you are going through. It takes time to understand how it's the right thing for you and it'll never be ok, but it's ok. The future starts to look brighter.

BTW this is not the album version and was recorded live for the video. Chris casually tearing it up as always.
Suggestion.... Emerson, Lake and Palmer, 1974 live, Welcome Back....Tarkus.
Yeah, monetary supported relatives and so on throughout the pandemic with money, groceries, and so forth. They started asking for more and more. I finally said no more, now I'm the outcast after 4 years of keeping them from going homeless...that's the thank you I got.
The whole Superunknown album is fire
Soundgarden is the best. Period. Fight me IRL!
❤ Millie
Your audio is excellent.
Love u Mill
I’ve had “it” for u, for 3 yrs
U can walk away from me
I’ll never walk away from u
Please do Soundgarden, Burden in my Hand
I believe that is the remastered version of that song. I prefer the original version personally, but the remastered version isn't that bad either.

Black Sabbath with Dio
Lady Evil
There’s a place just south of Witches Valley
Where they say the wind won’t blow
And they only speak in whispers of her name
There’s a lady they say who feeds the darkness
It eats right from her hand
With a crying shout, she’ll search you out
And freeze you where you stand
I’m the oldest and quit giving a fuck cus every thing was always my fault
How would I know that this could be my fate?
So many of my banshee heroes
are gone.
Picked a good one Mill.

I love listening to both one after the other. This is a live performance
Ditto
Just like Even Flow. Way better than the album version.
That’s a great live performance though
Completely disagree this live performance is outstanding. It’s raw.
Seriously, one of the greatest reactions I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot. Thank you for being so open.
I'm sorry to hear that undo pressure was placed upon you. That is unfair. I hope all is well now! As for the song, my take on the lyrics is in regards to mental anguish.
