This was my generation! The reason people are head banging and rocking to the music is because they feel every word and felt seen. They are liberating the sadness within. They are singing along because it's their story too. Creep is an anthem!
yeah .. the hymn of unrecuited love......................... or in other words - "somtething in your head is tearing you apart - fight FIGHT!" (Raindbirds: "In love and alright")
It's about unrequited love, being infatuated with someone who doesn't even care that you're alive...especially if you're a different or perhaps nerdy guy that looks like Thom.
I kind of have to give the title to the ultimate unrequitted love song to Pearl Jam's song called Black. That once you can just feel the anguish. Especially the MTV unplugged live version.@@Frk_Tamer
@@tomcat9761 I'm surprised to see this song referenced, but it is truly a great song. Allowing yourself to feel that love, knowing the ultimate result. Been there.
Again, I must say, I’ve seen this song live, and yes I sung and moshed. But it’s a celebration of the song, we all stop and sing the emotion bits together, most of us with tears in our eyes because the song resonates so deeply with, me. The plural of anecdote is not data but I very much doubt I was the only Radiohead fan singing those lines from the bottom of my heart…
It was about a girl he fell for at Uni who he never had a courage to approach until one night when drunk he told her how he felt and she ran away. It was late and a guy she didn't know approached her , not too surprising she ran. The line "She's Running again" is from that moment. Years later apparently she went to a Radiohead concert and someone told him she was there and he almost didn't go on. It's a really personal song to him.
NO... she ran away out of a record shop after seeing that he was in there (probably where they got the idea in that Johnny Depp movie), that's on record. No idea where you got that info but Thom said he never even told that girl he liked her, it was just kinda obvious to her. according to him he couldn't even get close to her let alone talk to her.
I was 19 when this song hit the scene! Thom is such an amazing vocalist! You can hear the pain in his voice. Radiohead was around in the 90s Muse was early 2000s
I can see how it the crowd's reaction appears in conflict with the performance. The thing is, the reason everyone is so energetic is because when this song came out it spoke to so many people that feel or have felt exactly what Thom is singing about. It hit me like a ton bricks at the time, still does. It's a very specific thing, and this song goes straight to quick of it in a way no other song had really ever done before. He is voicing a feeling that is rarely expressed so honestly, and the relief from feeling seen and heard from that can be quite freeing; Hence the enthusiasm.
“What happened there?” He was crying! 😢 omg that song… this version…so personal… so raw…god knows what he’s thinking there singing it. I guess we’ll never know for sure. But it’s powerful & it hurts. 😔
I think the definition of creep has tightened since then. Back then you may think of someone hanging on the outside, lurking not so much in a sinister fashion, but more just not belonging or out of place. Now it's more specific to unwanted advances, etc. Those were creeps too, but not the only type :)
This is about that second type though. It's about a girl he was really into but didn't even dare to approach. Not a pushy pervert kind of creep, but an always glancing, knows everything about you yet you barely know him kind of creep. Regardless of whether he really acted like a creep, it made him feel that way.
Radiohead had a lot of songs and videos in the 1990’s played on MTV. Several albums- the Bends, Kid A, OK Computer, In Rainbows and many more. I’ve been watching a Lolapolosa concert in Berlin 2017 is good and they’ve a Grammy performance with the USC band that good. Thom Yorke had a very hypnotic voice and stage presence- all the band is Good!!
Yeah sometimes a live performance just conveys the emotions so much stronger than the record, I felt the same way you did just now, on first listen it didnt hit me but when you see this version it hits like a truck in comparison. It does show Radiohead is a great band to see live (eventhough they hate playing Creep I believe haha) (Tool - Sober Live, had a similar effect on me)
You could have an incredible reaction channel just doing Tool and Radiohead and even though they don't sound at all alike their music does remind me of the other both very intricate but in a very different way.
this song voiced my angst in the ´90´s being 13 and helpless, father just died from leukemia, brother in same angst, hormones running amok, mother cracking from loss while working shifts as nurse assistant to keep remains of the family alive.
It was around at a similarly shitty time in my life as well, only I was 18 then. This song speaks to everyone of all ages everywhere. Most of us (I can't say all cause some ppl have only ever known good times, for now) can relate this song to some time or event in their lives. I lost my dad to cancer, I was working on a trawler at the time and could be gone for weeks on end working hard and risking my life until I had enough to put a deposit on a flat and get me and the then love of my life a place of our own. Only later to find out while I was living wet through and freezing cold everyday and being sick as a dog and getting an hours sleep a day, wet, rough broken horrible sleep, she'd been doing other things, with other ppl. So it wasn't a great time in my life either. And this song transports me back 30 years in an instant. Props to your mum for carrying on for you all when she must have been dying inside and about ready to just breakdown.
This was way before Cell Phones and how there was an instant way to "Hook" up. Infact you might have heard of MTV and this was one of the first bands they had a live performance around some weird pool set up and they sang that song back then. It was from a time where your actions held true. I grew up in the 80's and even back then we knew (if your mother and father taught you proper lessons) that even though you were out of place at the time. You totally felt like a creep, like you couldn't approach the cute girl in middle school, in highschool. As time goes by, we tend to learn lessons it's more about possitivity and including people that surround you is the key. Back then you had no communication skills, you most likely wer from a totally broken home and were never taught how to share outwards because inwards you were being attacked as a preteen. It's a message, a love message where even when you think you're down, the person you like might have those lost feelings as well as a teen.
Interesting how Postmodern Jukebox and Hayley Reinhard have completely changed the singing by changing the arrangement and style of singing!Totally different (sexy).
You had the proper reaction to such a powerful performance. I think many of us musicians tear up for great performances. Also "creep" didn't always refer to a person making sexual advances. There was just a general category of someone other people would call a creep back then.
most likely they are happy to be among people that relate with the song, as well as a song thats relateble, and feel happy to see their favorite band live, its.. different
For one of the best ever Radiohead live performances, check out their performance of Planet Telex at Cochella (mid-1990s.) It's amazing. And Thom is channeling Smeagol..
He wrote it after a real life thing. He liked a girl at his college and he saw her in a record shop one day and when she saw him she basically ran out... hence the 'run, run, run' etc.
I’m sorry Millie. I was somewhat ostracized growing up because I was shy. My now 35-year old son grew up with Asperger’s. And boy. No words for the horror of that. Not just for him (of course he himself experienced the horribleness of it) but as a Mother. Ugh. Powerful song.
I think it's something many of us (I can only speak for blokes) feel in our teenage years. Desperately infatuated with someone, and feeling completely "unworthy" and incapable of approaching them.
Thom's performance, i.e. how he channels the lyrics from within himself into their raw emotional form, is why no matter how well people cover Radiohead songs, they still fall short in comparison. Although, I would be curious to see James Blunt try something like Exit Music. 😂
Hermosa reacción Milly. Ahora ve la versión que hizo Paulina, la baterista de the warning. Por cierto en abril van para allá las diosas del rock para que vayas a verlas.
Along with The Beatles and Led Zeppelin, Radiohead are creative genius' that evolved and changed their musical art with each subsequent album. When you do choose to listen to whole albums, these three bands (at least) deserve that attention. "Ok Computer" is a masterpiece.
In fairness, most will view those they deem a weirdo as a creep, because only other weirdos accept the flirtations of other weirdos. Most creatives I think are "weirdos", because in order to be creative you have to not fit in the mold of society as precise as the "normal" person. Awesome reaction.

( And yes there are glaring exceptions) If you watch your video back you can see the cat reading your eye movement and expression. (Yes I know there are millions that won't agree) Great reaction! I have heard this before, Radiohead took elements from the 1972 song "The Air That I Breathe" perfomed by the Hollies; following legal action, Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood are credited as cowriters. Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creep_(Radiohead_song) I love both version!
Back then, the word "creep" had a different meaning. It meant someone who acts differently than what society deems acceptable and as such that person would be shunned by most. Later Radiohead is some of their best work. Masterpieces, some of it. Kid A, Ok Computer, In Rainbows. "How To Disappear Completely" might be the saddest song ever written when you analyze the lyrics.
Good reaction, for more music of more or less the same time, I would suggest you hunger strike from temple of the dog, there is a live performance with Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornel. Another very personal performance would be Everlong from foo fighters (Wimbley 2008).
