This was one of the biggest alternative rock hits of the early ‘90s, and might still be their most well-known song, even though they have tons of more complex and unique tunes. That era featured a number of songs with similar sentiments in their lyrics- feeling bad about yourself. It was a pretty serious time in music, really, and some have said it was too serious, even. Good foresight because yes, the chorus goes to hard rocking after quiet verses. I love the power of his voice on the bridge, and I think that’s the most emotional I’ve ever heard him belt it out.

As someone who was in HS and college in the 90's, Radiohead is like the Gen X Beatles - 5 of their 9 albums have made the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums List (take such rankings for what they are, but the point is there is good reason they can impact you like this - they are a truly massive and incredible band). This was their first single, great way to start, it was one of the biggest alt/rock songs of the early to mid 90s and is an anthem for anyone who has ever been in love with someone but thinks they aren't ever gonna have a chance as they think they aren't good enough themselves - such a Universal theme and the song displays it in such a memorable, instantly catchy way. They are an absolutely killer live band so this performance is just Radiohead being Radiohead and crushing it on stage, but this one is for sure a powerful clip. Nice reaction!

I arrived at your channel for Dimash and subscribed then but am delighted you've started on Radiohead. I've never heard that performance of the song before but it had me in tears at exactly the same point it did for you, which tells me it's not just the song, and not even just Thom's always mesmerizing vocals, but that specific moment in that specific performance, with the band dropping out to leave Thom infinitely raw and exposed and powerfully controlling my emotions. That song has long been one burned into my soul but that moment will be burned into my dreams tonight.

The notes were backed by and drawn from deep emotions. Its almost a WAIL if you will. These kinda of expressions of sorrow and anguish are hard coded into our psyche. Its akin to seeing a war time photograph of a mother holding the corpse of her child and the camera captured the exact moment of her wail.

I think this song is an amalgamation of events in his high school years. Everybody fancies the beautiful girl in school but not many have a chance. He's a small guy and his childhood was filled with surgeries to correct his eye. Singling him out for bullying of course. It's really heartbreaking. He did OK in the end though and gave a massive middle finger to the bullies.
You can't act out the passion he puts into this. It has to be lived.
Pearl Jam unplugged, Eddie Vedder singing "Black." Same deal. Can't replicate those emotions.

Random Trivia: There's another musician, Jeff Buckley - Thom Yorke went and saw him play in the early nineties and there's a video of Jeff absolutely slaying a song and Yorke is right up at the front of the audience and he looks.... upset?
Yorke later said watching Jeff's performance made him realize he and his band weren't good enough and he needed to do better. That motivation ended up being a driving focus for Radiohead and the rest as they say, is history.

4:23 Seeing the look on your face when Thom Yorke started to really hit that long note showed me that you were really appreciating the talent of this awesome band. There are many versions of this song on the internet - some studio and some live, and there are some differences in how the band plays it and how he sings it, but there are all great. In this version he breaks it at about 4:32, but in one live version he continues to hold that note for over 20 seconds, and then continues singing not even out of breath. ruclips.net/video/VzLlwlb1PRI/видео.html
I really loved your reaction to this amazing song and am looking forward to more.

@7:33 it's funny that that explosion is the result of the lead guitarist Jonny Greenwood disliking the song (which figures, as he likely couldn't relate to the rejection it portrays) and trying to fuck it up by slamming what he thought would be an inappropriate guitar into it. ironically the rest of the band liked the result, as it's perfectly suited to the emotions of it.
