As a business owner, PayPal also take a much larger cut of my sales than any other method of payment, but consumers feel it’s safe and reliable, and I’d potentially lose more than a third of my sales. Unfortunately it’s not viable for many business to remove it as a payment option. Edit: due to interesting takes: here in Australia, most small businesses do NOT WANT your card details. We use options like Apple Pay, Google pay, PayPal, square pay, shop pay, etc. I do not want your card details, ever. I do not see or keep your card details. You can please stop telling me you don’t trust small business with it. Fair enough; I AM NOT ASKING YOU TO. What a headache.
We don't want our card saved in your system or even submitted, i only use PayPal checkout. If I can't use PayPal I won't make the purchase. I had a store and I ONLY accepted PayPal
@@chatch15117 I don’t save card details. I use square space, which is its own platform for payments as well. I have no interest in keeping people’s details. But yes, when I’m making an online purchase, that’s also a concern. But with PayPal’s behaviour, not really sure I want them having my details either.
As a consumer, I really appreciate when sellers give PayPal as an option. I've been scammed too many times by bad sellers on the internet, and PayPal is the only payment method which will refund a dodgy transaction. I also prefer not to give my CC details to every shop out there.
When has a class action ever actually hurt a company? These are multi billion dollar companies charged scraps. U think the $725mil FB was charged affected them at all? And that was a much much bigger scandal. Paypal makes $30billion a year, paying a few hundred mil after a decade long lawsuit won't even scratch their bottom line. Only people who win are lawyers.
@@jordannoell4222 So the system isn’t actually working if they’re just going to find another way to weasel their way around the law. That’s why this sentiment exists. These cat and mouse chases are pointless if theirs no actual reformation.
Yea the problem is the guy “running” the lawsuit is a rainmaker who’s not a great lawyer just has the degree and a likable personality (to some people) the whole thing is going to vanish like his foia request did after he got smacked down in court for filing that nonsense
A friend of a friend made a PS3 super computer out of like 30 consoles, using the OtherOS. When it was removed, it broke everything. He signed up for the class action, it took many years and he only got a couple hundred dollars, not even enough to compensate 1 console, let alone 30. Myself, i signed up for the CRT class action. Again, it took like 6+ years. I think i got $40 lol.

For anyone interested: The heatpump thing here in Germany is, unfortunately, kinda multi-fold. And while yeah, most of it stems from political dumbassery, the "reasons" are kinda varied. The current building energy law, which mandates a certain percentage of renewable sources for new-install heating and cooling solutions for buildings, is a big sticking point. It was originally designed and approved under the previous government and ultimately (after actually simplifying it a little) ratified under the current government. And "certain" circles of the political landscape are vilifying literally EVERYTHING the current government, but particular the Green party, does. No matter what it is (like shutting down nuclear, which was ratified into law with a firm deadline in 2013, also by the Merkel government) Going so far as that the most likely next majority leader party, which led the government for 16 years under Merkel, is talking about completely canning that law. A law which they have created. Electricity is also still rather on the pricy side here, so in most cases, gas/oil/wood/whatever heating systems were, for the longest time, still cheaper to run (trending up constantly tho, obviously) Add to that, of course, that for 20+ years, our previous governments sold our asses to Russia for cheap gas. So gas heating was incredibly cheap for decades. Until of course, Russia shut it off, despite gas even being excluded from sanctions, in an attempt to freeze us out of helping Ukraine. Means, people were looking at orders of magnitude higher energy bills. Blaming of course, the Green party and their "eco fascism" And then there's some FUD-lore. The going "concern" for a long time was and still somewhat is, this asinine claim that in order for a heat pump to work in old buildings, the entire heating system needs to be ripped out and replaced with under-floor heating and full insulation. For tens, if not hundreds of thousands of Euros. Obvious horseshit. Yeah, of course, the more you replace, the more efficient the thing will run, but you can run a heat pump perfectly fine in decades old systems. And we all know how politics work, these days. And how damn stupid people have become. So all of the above nonsense was sprinkled around copiously, along with moronic fear-mongering how the government would come and take away your precious gas heaters. There's a fairly large installed solar capacity here, heat pumps are an absolute no-brainer. But there you have it. Political discourse, mixed with "culture war" nonsense.
@@giliuscaesar Absolutely. It's a pretty flawed comparison. Comes with, you know, having natural gas available. Canada produces 190 billion cubic meters of gas per year. In Germany it`s not even 4 billion. It was as much cheaper as it was due to deals with the Russians through Nordstream and we see where that leads. It's why the focus on renewables is so important. It's literally the only thing we can build that doesn't make us dependant on anyone else. Well, except fucking lignite, I guess....
@@Eipotttatschnope.. not true.. i pay 9 cents per kWh for gas and 34 cents for electricity.. i have a decently insulated 25 year old house and still a heatpump wouldnt necessarily reach the 350 % efficiency that it would need for the cost to be the same because i only have tiny radiators (which means high water temperature in order to heat).. so i maybe pay about the same every month, but i pay 10k more in advance to install the thing... or i pay even more to replace all the radiators too.. also i dont really have the space outside.. .. and thats for a fairly well (better than average) insulated house. .. for a new house? yeah. definitely. do it. for an existing one, not necessarily
@@Eipotttatsch it all depends. Personally for me (Belgium), even if electricity was FREE, it would take almost 5 years to "earn back" the initial cost of the heat-pump vs a natural gas installation. Of all investments I could make to make my house more energy efficient, a heat pump isn't high on the 'makes-sense'-list. Heat pumps are subsidized here, but it's still the thing that only makes sense after you already have solar panels, home battery, rain tank, heavy insulation/windows etc.
The money consumers get from class action lawsuits isn't the point. They are supposed to make it costly enough for the company so they don't do the same thing again in the future. It's punitive and the only way to punish a giant company is to take their money. They are extremely costly, difficult and time-consuming for the firm filing them. These things sometimes go on for decades.
Yup, and the large payout to lawyers is the only reason class actions can happen at all. Class action is a massive undertaking for lawyer firms and if it fails they get nothing, or very little. Even with the large potential payout, being a lawyer for class action is basically lawyer activism.
Well, you say the only way to punish companies is their money, but a lot consider that cost of business. I think the way now is charging people from the companies like CEOs, since that actually affects people, not 1% of income.
@@CentreMetre yeah, no. There's the cost of business like paying fines and such. And then there's paying for actual damages. I don't think any company is going to be happy to pay for damages, that came from an action that generates their incoming revenue. Damages can be up to a significant percentage of earned income from multiple years. Absolutely no company is going to take that as a cost of doing business.
The money means nothing to these companies and they have teams of people who are dedicated to dealing with lawsuits. So it wastes none of their real time. They love that the lawsuits take decades. Blue cross blue sheild has a class action that started in 2012, concluded in 2020, appeals finished in 2022. In that time they've made $300bil im revenue. The $2.8bil from the lawsuit is just a cpst of doing business.
@@TealJosh For small businesses maybe. Big tech is a different story, and it has been talked about on WAN show many times. They get hit with lawsuit after lawsuit for illegal behavior, but they don't care, because to them, all damages they have ever had to pay was a small slap on the wrist. If they make significantly more money breaking the law than they have to pay in fines or damages for doing so, the system practically encourages them to do it.
Regarding Honey: I pay for RUclips Premium and have done for years. I think it's right that creators are compensated. I installed honey years ago after seeing it on a LTT video, I believe I've still got it installed on my desktop and didn't know anything about this controversy before it blew up this week. Had I known about it years ago I would have uninstalled it years ago, so I think there is something to be said for LTT sharing the information, even if it's not a full on vilification video. I also think you are owed stolen affiliate revenue, so I would support you joining legal action.
As a premium member, I agree that content creators deserve a fair share considering Honey would have been taking revenue from creators who DIDN’T partner with them. Feck them.
He talked about it. They did not know it harmed consumers and only knew about hijacking affiliated links. This means, according to the news then, it took money from creators but not consumers. If he did make a video talking about it, people would be mad because he is telling people to remove an extension that saves them money but hijacks money from the creator. Looking from both sides, people would be mad for it and some people who are understanding would stop using it.
@@bijay1088 The percentage of people paying an affiliate tax actually does have an impact on the price for the simple reason that it has an impact on the profits. If Honey is making that percentage 100 for a substantial number of people, that has a more noticeable impact than people who occasionally buy from an affiliate link of their favorite youtubers or whatever.
I don't think there is as many people going back and watching old Wan shows as much as people fall asleep watching RUclips and wake up to an old Wan show. Can't tell you the number of times that I woke up to an old Wan show. Lol.
I enjoy the long wan shows... not the endless tirades about stuff only linus and like 4 audience members care about.. that's were timestamps come in handy
A good option for those old videos would be to mute the audio during the sponsor spot and display something on screen stating that the sponsor has been retroactively removed.
could potentially end up being sued themselves for this. you cant accept a contract and then a couple months/years later decide that you want to break that contract. they were paid for the sponsor spot already..
regarding 9:10 re-watching old wan shows, you are beloved by youtube. No mater what i watch if i fall a sleep and wake up, auto play always puts me on old wan shows after 2-3 videos. I could be watching a different topic like sports and in 2-3 videos auto play still ends up bringing me to your channel.
Heatpumps have been politicised in germany (thanks FDP) but the truth is as always more complicated. Contractors will charge you 3 times as much for a heat pump than for gas heating, even though heat pumps should be cheaper than gas burners by now. Theroretically you could always buy a cheap heatpump on the internet, but then you won't find a contractor to install it. They have enough requests that they can be picky. That is a very german problem. In the neighbouring countries, heatpumps are significantly cheaper. So if you live close to the border it can be a good idea to hire a french or polish contractor, for example. But if you don't live close to a border that often isn't viable. Another problem is that germany has a lot of old and badly insulated houses. There are heatpumps that can provide the higher temperatures you need for these houses now, but there didn't use to be for a long time, so a lot of people don't know that yet. And the final problem: At the moment electricity is pretty expensive and gas is pretty cheap in germany. So while a heat pump will still save you money in the long run, it can be 13+ years, considering the other things I already mentioned.
@@user-op8fg3ny3jthere still is a point because heat pumps abuse thermodynamics and can get a coefficient of performance so high (4+) they become better then any heating method and if you have a hot summer ( like everyone is going to have in a few years) they can also cool your home in the summer for a tiny investment.
Reading the beginning of your first sentence I was prepared for another conservative hot take so you can imagine my relief when an actual well thought out comment followed. Grüße aus Restdeutschland!
Lol when Linus mentioned people going back and watching WAN show, it just makes me think of how every single time I wake up from a nap, WAN show is playing and I'm like, okay guess I'm watching this now.
As a user. If I knew Honey was stealing affiliate money from creators who were sponsored by honey, any creators at all actually. I would have un-installed Honey right there. Which I did after seeing Megalag's video. I'm not necessarily upset that LTT didn't publicly share that they knew about this, I just wish that they said something so I could have known to keep supporting creators instead of Paypal.
Unfortunately, not all people are like you. I even saw some "people" (probably trolls) who brags about installing Honey just to spite content creators.
@@hanifarroisimukhlis5989 Agreed, plus the point of some people in the live chat were clearly born 3 years ago because 1. they couldn't think back 4 years, and 2. they also don't have a memory of what happened 3 minutes ago.
Not only that, knowing that Honey was stealing affiliate money from creators who were sponsored by honey would have made me wonder what other shady business was happening behind the scenes and would have convinced myself and others to uninstall the extension
I think the whole story tells you everything you needed to know about the ethics at LMG... now you know how reliable are the sponsorships and recommandations made...
The angle would never have been “it makes Linus less money”, the angle would logically have been “they are stealing from every content creator whether they’ve endorsed Honey or not!”
Never expect people to take the most logical angle. Seriously, when's the last time they made that? Even now their angle hasn't been to hate on Honey, it was to accuse a victim of Honey of being irresponsible. It's really insane.
Germany is actually way less dependent on russian gas than was reported, heatpumps have a hard time being adopted, because there is virtually no infrastructure available (HVAC Technicians forr one) since Germany does not traditionally have any sort of AC systems in the home
Using a password manager as an alternative to PayPal isn't an option for most because they don't use PayPal just because it's convenient. They also use it because they perceive it to be safer. Not having to hand out your card details to a party you are not 100% sure about is the reason PayPal started out in the first place.
Basically that. It's the go to option when you don't want to pass your credentials. Plus, in many countries, it's actually uncommon to have credit cards. Like in germany. So you *have to* rely on those options.
@@AkuniLesare credit cards or debit cards? You don’t need to use credit cards for any site, most will accept a debit card. No clue how ye are surviving without debit cards.
@@eomoran Debit cards nowadays are very integrated with the internet, but there was a time especially back in the day where they just straight up didn't work for a lot things, that's a huge part of why people started to use paypal.
We're not watching old WanShow, every time i fall asleep, RUclips starts playing old WanShows, and I stop them in the morning. Watched some of them for over 20 times this way 😅
They've talked about why they don't in the past. Basically it leads to responses sounding canned and corporate. This specific audience would jump off the ship faster than they would for any gaff.
The bit at the end with the "You need to look at management if you are salary capped." That is such a stupid ass mentality. It's how companies end up with garbage leadership. You have a guy, let's call him Frank, fantastic welder, does some of the best work in the company and has capped pay rate. Frank wants more money and the company decides to push him to management. Turns out Frank is not a very good leader. Now Frank has 3 options, either take the pay hit to go back to welding, git gud at leading, or find a new job. Finding a new job sucks, that's it job hunting blows, Frank probably not going to take a pay hit. I love my job I really do, but if they stopped paying me I'd not show up, we all work for the same reason, we need money to live. Keeping the decent pay and, going back to what Frank is actually good at is no going to happen, so he stays in management. You now have a garbage leader who is only in the position cause they don't want to take a pay cut, and a skilled artisan that is not dropping quality welds. The system is broken.
I think the heat pump situation in Germany is similar to here in Austria: heat pumps are used, but often people switch to pallets for heating or stay with gas. Electricity is not so cheap anymore and without solar panels it is quite a big investment. In the long run, gas will be much more expensive, but people often don't do the 10-20 year calculations. But only if you own a house. If you live in the city in a rented flat, things get trickier: as a tenant, you can't change the gas heater, and there's no incentive for landlords to switch from gas to district heating, which is common here in Vienna (basically, heat is produced centrally and delivered via pipes). The main problem, which is really ridiculous, is that electricity prices are determined by gas prices, because gas can be used to produce electricity. This means that the more scarce gas becomes, the more expensive electricity and gas become. This makes it uncompetitive to switch from gas to some form of electric heating. And even if you can install solar panels, the grid operators pay almost nothing to feed the electricity you produce into the central grid, so they basically get free electricity from you while you pay the price.
The advantage of PayPal as a consumer is that your credit card doesn't leave PayPal. I want to reduce the the number of places that have my card info. The number of data breaches is a concern so if they don't have the card info all the better.
Bingo. Even as a developer that’s had to deal with the ‘fun’ of manually implementing it. I still use it on many stores because of exactly this. Having to change all your bill payments because some random store has been hacked and lost your credit card number is not fun.
They have to give your card information to make the purchase tho...... idky people think PayPal is just your name and everything is private it's not your card still has to be run don't be dumb
Paypal sucks as a company, though. They provide an incredibly valuable service but they'd still sooner spit in your direction than actually care about you.

Some people watch old wan shows because they are fans. Ask yourself: how many times have you listened to your favourite music artist? For me these shows are anti brain rot, it's long, funny and I learn something everytime! Better than 101 shorts about something dumb where I have to focus on something new every 10 seconds. Because wan is so long I can listen to it as a radio show while working!

German here: amortization for a heatpump is insane. Temperatures below zero for a good amount of winter. Have you heard about our electricity prices? 0.3 - 0.5€ per kWh. A 3,6kW heating wire (a small one, 6kW would be standard in my region) in the heat pump, at 8 hours a day, would net more than 400€ a month. More than double the price of eg. domestic gas. I know multiple people with a heat pumps which installed a fire place to compensate by burning wood. Edit: Old buildings with regular convection radiators have minimal to zero chance to get an acceptable water temperature in the heating system. (40⁰C delivered, depending on the house up to 65⁰C are required.) So add the cost of ripping all your floors for floor heating.
2:15:38 My parents have a water-to-water heat pump. The cold side is a line underground in their garden. It's only about a meter down but it works fine even at -40F/C. They built it in the 80s. It's old tech at this point.
@@rkan2 Not really. I often tried using Apple Pay for online purchases linked to my debit card, it doesn’t work. It only seems to work for in-store transactions.
@@rkan2 Germany has its own domestic card payment system. A lot of people use those and don't have Visa or Mastercards (two main card providers here). A lot of every day transactions are still done in cash. Add in a wide use of SEPA direct transfers and people don't see the need to get a VISA/Mastercard, which often costs extra.
@@rkan2 Debit cards in Germany work a little bit different so you can't use them online directly. They don't have the card number in the same format, don't have a CVC code, etc.
My car is 22 years, and I now have to rebuild the frontend because of a wreck. Still cheaper then buying a new car due to a lack of damage to the chassis and engine.
My first car cost $2,000 nine years ago, still going strong. Although I've only done 20k miles, I just drive to do my shopping once or twice a week, with an occasional long journey 1-2 times a year.
The main reason I tend to use PayPal (or similar products like Amazon Pay or Google Pay) when shopping online is that I don't have to give my actual card details to the merchant (though 3-month split pay for large purchases is also handy). Part of my security posture is to reduce the number of companies that I give my details to. My using Google Pay, Amazon Pay, or PayPal when shopping online, the details are stored in fewer places, so less chance of a data breach gaining access to my card details. For me it's about the security of not handing my card details to the merchant directly, not the autofill part (but I would if I needed to)
I expect there will be 2 more class action suits coming. This one is unjust enrichment and tortious interference with trade from the creators. I expect there will be one for businesses for extortion and conversion as well. And then one from consumers for fraud. The consumers would be more difficult, as there is an arbitration clause, but that may be set aside due to fraudulent inducement.
@@PlittHD IANAL, but I'm pretty sure you can't enforce illegal terms in a regular ToC , to some degree even signed contracts can be torn up if the terms are illegal, so idk how a ToC saves you from outright fraud. Again, not a lawyer, maybe legal eagle will do a breakdown video.
@@samlevi4744 The coming MegaLag video may expose extortion as well. It appears as if he might show evidence that Honey is forcing sellers into relationships by threatening to process extremely (excessively?) generous coupons. This is speculation, but it was teased at the end of the first video.
@@samlevi4744 At the end of hte unveiling video, there were heavy implications that Honey (ab)used their system to force stores to partner with them, as to keep the coupons on a normal level. Like, Honey was giving out coupons that were not meant for the public or some such stuff and when they didn't work, people complained to the store and such, if i remember that correctly.
@@DeinonychusCowboy It's why protests are usually more valuable than sending hate online. There's a cost (not necessarily financial) to entry, which means people are more likely to only voice their opinion on things that matter rather than doing it for kicks, or just the sake of it. Haven't looked at where exactly it breaks but the timecodes end up completely off towards the end at least. 1:41:00 for example they are talking about META and parental control stuff, not sponsors which happened earlier.
Oh man, Osmond has been doing that show FOREVER. My mother was a huge fan and got a photo with him backstage in the mid-90's. We grew up listening to the tape/CD of that performance.
I hate Paypal, but until every card provider allows you to make virtual cards, I will use it. I've had card numbers stolen many times before I started using Paypal and now it is far less frequent.
@TheosTechTips the problem I have with Privacy and other services is that they're similar to PayPal - a third party you give your cards (and last 4 of SSN in the States) to. If Chase/BofA/etc created a first-party solution, my data remains in the bank where I created the account in the first place.
12:00 what many people in the americas also don't realize is that in Europe (or at least where I live) having a credit card is not the norm, even as an adult. My parents have one credit card that they barely use and don't need to because all our local webshops use our national online payment system. I only have a credit card for when I go on vacation aswell, as Paypal is enough in most cases.
@@sbaaamm it's not? Interesting, I know several people in the UK, germany and belgium who all don't have/need one. In which countries is it the norm? For clarity: I mean any card that can be used in international visa/mastercard payments. Where I live the default is maestro/vpay.
@@sbaaamm again, I specifically meant a card that lets you shop internationally with visa/mastercard protocols. Debit cards are everywhere yes but not everywhere they let you use those protocols
As the average WAN show edges closer and closer to 3h, maybe it’s time to have someone on staff who writes timestamps as the show takes place, rather than relying on volunteer work.
I’ve only seen Joseph put on by a local high school several years ago. Was quite fun, and honestly would love to see it done professionally! One thing I’m never going to forget is that song with the massive list of colours on the coat. I was a theatre kid so at one point I had to memorize it. Definitely one of those things that never leaves you…. 😧
I am still at 13:44 and one point you guys missed - paypal OBSCURES CARD DETAILS from the seller. That's why I use it everywhere I can. Not because it is awesome, but because shady businesses and linux iso webshops don't get to have my card details.
So does Apple Pay (I assume Google Pay too) and some banks offer onetime cards where once used the card details are refreshed so they become useless if tried again
As does Stripe (Checkout), as does Visa Connect (and every other CC Provider specific payment offering), as does Apple Pay. Really, any payment service that takes your information off the Vendor's site.
@@tomstravels520 yes but for those sites I have to go transfer money to said card, get the info then paste it into the purchase site. Or just two clicks with paypal and provides the same function but faster and easier. Hence why paypal is used by so many. Also not as many places take apple pay as they do paypal.
2:14:20 As a german I have that 90% of the time when I see any news about America. Also Regarding Darth JarJar He is a thing in the new Star Wars Lego movie.
Is there any chance that an LMG sponsors web page could be created that lists all of the current sponsors and maybe a history of dropped sponsors? That way viewers would have a place to go and check the status of any sponsor they see in a video regardless of how old the content is. Just a thought, no idea how challenging of a task it would be to create.
Hearing Linus came to Scotland, and liked it, is awesome. And shocking. Crazy to think I could've been walking along the street and seen Linus and Yvonne, considering I had no idea he was on vacation let alone in my tiny country, I would've lost my mind. And yes Harry Potter is huge here. Almost every shop has a whole Harry Potter section. I'm one of the ones that still buy it. I'm 27 and my room is filled with Harry Potter decorations.
Okay, but Linus didn't get anywhere near the reaction. "Why do you hate hamburgers that became hot dogs" deserved. It was a good joke. I appreciated it
Linus mentioned that nobody announces publicly when they drop their sponsors, and he's 100% correct. Unless there's something shady happening, in which case someone like Gamers Nexus would publicly mention it. I don't know what others think, but I don't think what LTT did in advertising for Honey was bad. The only issue is that if you see something shady happening, it's good to raise the alarm. The distinction you guys make between consumers and other creators is not a healthy one. Someone justified it by saying we didn't know consumers were being hurt at the time, so we didn't raise any alarms. But at the end of the day, it's not that deep, and people aren't super mad at LTT. I'm just disappointed. On the other hand, I don't think we should dictate anything to creators. We can only ask, and if we don't find what we want, we should move on. This mob mentality doesn't help anyone and makes creators who get criticized tense up. By the way, Linus, work on handling criticism or hire a PR coach - sometimes you say things that make the situation more annoying, and that's worse defense than staying silent. Just saying.
2:14:06 the issue with heatpumps is that they do not work well in old, less insulated, houses with radiators. The flow temperature is just too low, or energy cost would be to high with increased temperature. in our house we use wood pellets for our central heating, it works well and they are locally produced.
I wouldn't say I'm a diehard PayPal but it lets me deal with forex in a secure easy manner... and as a customer I don't need to worry about how the merchant will protect my payment details.
Also it offers 2 layers of protection. First one being their own customer protection, and then you can undo payments to Paypal itself where they usually will just grab the money back from the merchant.
I am kinda confused Any bank I have can also easily deal with foreign exchange and the mandatory 2 factor auth by my bank kinda seal the deal on security I don't see why anyone would use PayPal today
@@wapniak666 seriosuly, I still don't get, how PayPal still exists. Around here (Ukraine) - such services have died like 15 years ago, because internet banking using your bank are just way more convenient. What is the point of using third party?
Most people i know use paypal not for convenience but for the ability to not providing the card details to the retailer. Its more hassle in a lot of instances using paypal but that extra security is what people like about it.
Im German, heat pumps are great, but i live in an old house, we use propane to heat and when i turn off my heating the house is cold in a few hours. Meaning the insulation is just plain bad here, soo a heatpump hardly keeps up. Also energy costs here are crazy! We are paying 32ish cents per kwh. Wich makes heatpumps less interesting tbg
@The1stChillaKilla But you can get special rates for your heat pump electricity, which is around 19-20ct/kwh. This makes them much more interesting. Source: my own electricity contract.
The insulation is bad regardless of your heating method. A heatpump is cheaper per kWh of energy you put in, because the efficiency difference is greater than the difference in cost of gas vs electricity
Honey’s business practices are common in cashback sites and extensions. Not saying they’re good, just that the whole sector is bad. Not to mention other companies’ bad practices like account balance fees, intentionally bad cashback tracking, no customer support, etc.
Yeah I am still confused that apparently Noone knew about this. I have been using cashback services since 2014 and it has been common knowledge in the community how these operate
Honey provided a service and that service could be a factor of the sale (without a promocode you may not have bought it) which will validate them taking the ref code in court. onlytime it would be questionable is when they could not provide a code but even then you manually press the button to try their service and i would imagine it is written that they would take a commission when you use their service. Pretty sure they have the law on their side even tho its an ugly practice. If it seem to good to be true then it probably is. good that the tech yters learn a valuable lesson to check their sponsors properly
When you operate an affiliate scheme, it can be an open scheme where any site or app or influencer can sign up, or it can be a moderated scheme where you need to be approved. All these sites approved Honey as an affiliate as well as sites like LTT. The problem isn't with Honey, it's with the sites allowing them onto their affiliate scheme.
i believe they are talking about mechanics and enemy ai work using frames to determine what to do. so if the fps goes higher than the cap, things stop working as intended. i probably didn't word that the best, and have 0 experience in the field, but I watch too much youtube.
PayPal and others like it make it such that I don't needs to share my CC details with each retailers I deal with. Over the last 30 years I've seen too many Internet retail sites get hacked and have customer CC details stolen. Having your CC details stolen is a real pain in the a$$ since any and all pre-authorized payments need to change to reflect the new CC details. In this modern life that can be a dozen or more entities that need to be informed of the change, which can take many days to do since most places have cut customer support to the marrow. And no, not all places let you make such changes from their web site.
PayPal is just too big in US Europe has dozens of payment methods many of which don't rely on any card information and no information is stored on retailer side
I 100% agree. As annoyed as I am about the Honey scam, there's no way I'm dropping PayPal. It's just too valuable because it let's you buy things from random sites without needing to give your card info. All it takes is one bad apple to, through either incompetence or malice, have your info sold to cryber criminals. I've delt with fraud before using PayPal, someone stole $1500 from me to buy concert tickets. 3 weeks and 7 calls to my bank later I finally got the damn money back. I don't even know which web shop did it because I've used so many in the time I had the card. I trust Google, Amazon, PayPal, Cashapp, Microsoft, and Venmo with my card numbers and that's it. No exceptions. If they don't accept PayPal then I'm not buying it.
I think the better alternative to PayPal is virtual or temporary credit card numbers. For example, my Capital One Quicksilver card lets me generate a unique credit card number that is locked to a specific vendor. If I only ever intend to buy from that vendor once, I can delete the number after the transaction is over. Or, if the number gets leaked, I can just call up Capital One to report the fraud and have that virtual number deleted, without needing to change numbers with every other vendor. Doing it this way narrows the blast radius without needing to do anything nonstandard. It is comparable to the concept of using a unique password for each website vs. using the same password for every website. And with regard to buyer protection, I kinda trust my CC company more than PayPal to help me out.
36:50 i had a 0.9 pensil. It was awesome, but not the most elegant. My grip was also very awkward, so it made sense. Otherwise I like 0.5 even if it breaks often for me.
@dtemp132 Yeah, 3 hours is like the average. There were days when it was 4 hours, but it had been creeping up from like 2 hours for years. Then Yvonne got jealous of Linus' work wife and wanted him to come home sooner and we were back to 2 hours for a bit. I'm fine with 2-3 hours. I'm not more important than someone's wife and kids.
@AlexMBellino It's also a joke For the longest time, WAN shows were being shortened because Luke had a hard out due to needed to medicate his birds. Either that's still true or Dan has just streamlined the show enough as a producer that these medium-sized streams have become more likely to happen. There's also the chance that Yvonne or Linus's kids have an influence on this, but I actually doubt it. After a certain point, Linus's kids started accepting that nothing gets done on Friday nights because WAN show goes so late (this was discussed at one point, no I do not have the citation). It is very likely Yvonne is in the same boat
I get why people criticize lawyers for being vultures during class action lawsuits. I understand it can be scummy for some. But to play the devil's advocate, let's not forget that lawyers with the biggest cuts of the payout are those that also do the work for free, even shelling out for court fees at times. So yes, it may look terrible if they get a large chunk of the payout, but at the same time, they also could potentially lose thousands if not close to millions if they lose. If they lose, that's professional fees, court fees, and lost revenue from foregoing other more winnable cases down the drain. I know class action suits rarely permanently damage their targets, but I think it's a fair recourse for getting back what was damaged from the victims, even if the payout is tiny because of the chunk that lawyers take. Let's not forget, there are some small wins here and there, like getting Monsanto to pay out 2 Billion for their weed killer that ended up causing cancer. What Honey did wasn't deadly, but it might as well be equally as scummy. I'd rather let the lawyers win hundreds of millions than let Honey keep the revenue they stole.
Perhaps as a viewpoint from where I live in Europe: Credit cards, BAD. More elaborate, they take long with only monthly payback of what got used in a month with unclear spendage. Also credit score is just not a thing here. Stronger yet using credit/loan other then for something big like buying a house or car is deemed socially as the act of someone who does not know how to handle their money.
@@Eucep compared to the US, I get rewarded for using my credit card with some percentage of cash back each month... A lot of people use the credit card and just immediately transfer funds to pay them off. It'd be silly not to use it. (That doesn't stop me from attaching my credit to Paypal, but I was just thinking it's interesting how cultural differences compare)
@@dannyphillips15 Now this could just be due to the link to my bank, but if I transfer funds to my credit card, it does not lower the credit owned. In stead it adds to the 'money I can spend' for the next month(s) till I use up that amount. But it does not affect current balance. Which adds to my reluctance to use it. Also credit card usage only 'costs' money, but it is included in the monthly costs for having it part of my bank account... even if I do not use it.
5:53 Don't tell people what to do; just give them the facts and let them decide what to do with that information. Eg., Honey does this, and these are the effects of their action. End the video there. Don't give a verdict.
I use Adblock for my systems safety. Too many bad actors on unmoderated ad networks, but at the same time I will use memberships to avoid them when available.
When I first heard about the Honey controversy last week, I thought, "Weren't they an LTT sponsor?" But as soon as the guys clarified that they quit working with Honey years ago, I immediately quit caring about it.
The pro shot of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, also with Donny Osman as Joseph, had cheap sets as well. In the film version, they are literally performing it AS a school play in front of an audience of kids. It works well for the material.
Being Linus and frowned upon in a shop is hilarious. I'd be too tempted to really show them up by buying something nuts from a friendlier member of staff. Or other shop entirely
There are so many things to do in Las Vegas that isn’t drinking and gambling: tons of stellar local and globally famous restaurants, a track in the north part of town where you can rent super cars with an instructor that will coach you around the track as fast as your skill will allow, tons of shows….etc
The main reason I use paypal is because I don't want my credit card info in a billion different databases whose security practices I don't know. Paypal keeps my credit card info in one database, theirs.
There's the option of using virtual credit cards with some banks, AFAIK. They give you a virtual credit card (which essentially leads back to a specific credit card account or something like that) that you can revoke at any time. And you can have loads of different virtual credit cards so you can use a specific virtual credit card for only one service, so if that card number is abused you know where to look for the problem (and you can revoke the card number so nothing more can be done with it)
For the socks, you want a thick pad above the heel for 2 reason. 1. It protects the back of your foot from getting shredded from walking a lot in work "boots" or hiking shoes and 2. it prevents the seam from ripping above the heel pad when you pull the back side for a tighter fit. I am on my feet (usually walking) for about 20 hours straight 3 days a week so my socks get heavily abused just wearing them one time and most pairs do not last longer then 2 or 3 days of that (not continuous) before they get a hole or the seam on the back rips.
Paypal is important to encourage people to buy from you as it means there's an option to pay where the shop/store doesn't get access to your details. Having you card details with as few companys as possible is important for many of us.
There are a thousand alternatives. Most stores, even when entering your card information, are just using a stripe plugin or something similar. You can use Apple, Google or ShopPay. None of these put your card information at risk. It’s not 2008 anymore and you should only be using PayPal if you need an escrow service.
I agree with this but Paypal is also not a great company, either. So it provides an invaluable service but still, if only there was a better option, though the same could be said for banks. They provide services we need but most (if not all) stuck and don't give a shit at all.
The overwhelming majority of businesses (large or small) use a merchant platform like Shopify, or Square, or similar. I don't think you'll find a business that builds their own e-commerce platform, and thus would be storing or even processing the card payments. When a business uses Shopify (or similar) it is Shopify who is processing the payment and the business sees none of it, all they get is a "payment successful" token. It isn't the year 2000 anymore.
The Tesla thing is quite funny especially given that VW is currently facing a big scandal over recording, storing, and leaking GPS data of half a million cars down to 10cm accuracy. Tesla must've been like Hold my Beer
@@_Super_Hans_ I will be honest and you will probably not like it: MKBHD, along with many other big creators, probably knew about it before the controversy began, and are just now talking about it because shit hit the fan. Really, a lot of them are probably just pretending they didn't know the same shit Linus knew. Because somehow, for some reason, a lot of people believe big creators with accountants wouldn't notice how they weren't getting money from affiliate links.
PayPal is just so central and easy to use that switching to something else would actually be annoying. The only real option would be to use my credit card everywhere but I hate that
The only thing I don't like about heat pumps is the noise. All of a sudden completely silent neighborhoods become noisy, which sucks at night, because a lot of people like to sleep with an open window.

I find the funniest thing about Tiffanys is the sales assistant looking at you like you’re “poor” while Tiffanys pay barely above minimum wage.
What a headache.
i'm in the same boat. i cry a little every time there is a big purchase paid for with pay pal. but it has to be there
We don't want our card saved in your system or even submitted, i only use PayPal checkout. If I can't use PayPal I won't make the purchase. I had a store and I ONLY accepted PayPal
PayPal still exists proves that consumers are idiots, unfortunately
@@chatch15117 I don’t save card details. I use square space, which is its own platform for payments as well. I have no interest in keeping people’s details. But yes, when I’m making an online purchase, that’s also a concern. But with PayPal’s behaviour, not really sure I want them having my details either.
As a consumer, I really appreciate when sellers give PayPal as an option. I've been scammed too many times by bad sellers on the internet, and PayPal is the only payment method which will refund a dodgy transaction. I also prefer not to give my CC details to every shop out there.
Class action lawsuits are less about making money and more about making the company hurt so much that they knock off their bullshit.

Met Linus at Apple in Edinburgh this week. Was looking at the accessories and i heard a familiar voice turned around and Linus was standing there it was hilarious and surreal for me at the same time. It's not everyday you run into a big RUclips creator in Scotland when your looking at cords.

Blaming of course, the Green party and their "eco fascism"
And then there's some FUD-lore.
Electricity being double the price compared to Canada and natural gas being 4 times cheaper is kind of an important factor to account for.
@@giliuscaesar sure, but with the average efficiency of heat pumps over a year they still end up reliably cheaper than gas or oil heating
If then possibly can. LMG is a canadian company and the class action is US only.
++ same here , i mean a yt community post would be the minimum imo

This, to the top with you!
No insulation; no point. Would be like trying to run a fridge/freezer that's poorly insulated
Not very smart to be dependent on gas. This might bite you on your buttocks again.
Reading the beginning of your first sentence I was prepared for another conservative hot take so you can imagine my relief when an actual well thought out comment followed.

"How much is it?" - "Is what sir?" - "The business. I'm buying it."
The advantage of PayPal as a consumer is that your credit card doesn't leave PayPal. I want to reduce the the number of places that have my card info. The number of data breaches is a concern so if they don't have the card info all the better.

I hate Paypal, but until every card provider allows you to make virtual cards, I will use it. I've had card numbers stolen many times before I started using Paypal and now it is far less frequent.
Revolut does it and is easy to use.
You could use Privacy. It will allow you to make virtual cards.
@TheosTechTips the problem I have with Privacy and other services is that they're similar to PayPal - a third party you give your cards (and last 4 of SSN in the States) to. If Chase/BofA/etc created a first-party solution, my data remains in the bank where I created the account in the first place.

As the average WAN show edges closer and closer to 3h, maybe it’s time to have someone on staff who writes timestamps as the show takes place, rather than relying on volunteer work.
Why do you think they should have timestamps? If you just want the specific things you can wait to get the clips they upload of a topic.
Yeah! They should totally pay someone so they can make less money.

If by linux isos you mean something else then you shouldn't be paying for free content.
PayPal is not remotely the only service that does that. They are one of many.

And then wake up in the middle of the night because of Luke laughing loudly. I love it.
Yeah i agree. I am not sure if Linus mentioned what the actual Problem NOW even is with Honey.

If only US wasn't so behind on banking tech lol
Also it offers 2 layers of protection. First one being their own customer protection, and then you can undo payments to Paypal itself where they usually will just grab the money back from the merchant.
I am kinda confused
Any bank I have can also easily deal with foreign exchange and the mandatory 2 factor auth by my bank kinda seal the deal on security
I don't see why anyone would use PayPal today
@@wapniak666 seriosuly, I still don't get, how PayPal still exists. Around here (Ukraine) - such services have died like 15 years ago, because internet banking using your bank are just way more convenient. What is the point of using third party?

I don't rewatch old WAN shows, but holy F**k does RUclips love playing them every time I fall asleep
Most people i know use paypal not for convenience but for the ability to not providing the card details to the retailer. Its more hassle in a lot of instances using paypal but that extra security is what people like about it.
Why not use other virtual card services? Or reloadable burner visas?
I was with my family too in Edinburgh watching Joseph and the technicolour dreamcoat. Would have made my day to see Linus in person 😂
That just makes it even better that it's now getting challenged
Someone should check if the built in MS Edge coupon function does this.
@53:50, As a beginner game dev, I don't understand what they mean by capping the FPS, and Linux said something about using the time.

PayPal is just too big in US
Europe has dozens of payment methods many of which don't rely on any card information and no information is stored on retailer side
@@wapniak666such as? (asking as a European)

@@cozymonkthats dark
@AlexMBellino It's also a joke
For the longest time, WAN shows were being shortened because Luke had a hard out due to needed to medicate his birds.

Credit Cards are safe and reputable
PayPal is the exact opposite
You can use Apple/Google Pay then or some banks offer one time digital cards
The overwhelming majority of businesses (large or small) use a merchant platform like Shopify, or Square, or similar. I don't think you'll find a business that builds their own e-commerce platform, and thus would be storing or even processing the card payments.
When a business uses Shopify (or similar) it is Shopify who is processing the payment and the business sees none of it, all they get is a "payment successful" token.
It isn't the year 2000 anymore.
