For context, The Black Album was written and recorded during the first Iraqi War in the early 90s. They filmed the making of the album for a documentary and during they had clips of James watching the news as Operation Desert Storm was underway. I can imagine this song was written with that in mind.

They blew up with this album. A lot of die hard old school Metallica fans equated their success with selling out. They were popular for a reason folks. They're good! Their songs are good. They blazed a trail that others are still struggling to even get on. Long live the Metal militia!

Agreed. I was a Metallica fan in high school. This came out when I was in Korea in the Air Force. It was everywhere. Things get a backlash when they are that popular.

@@Gary_MThey were huge in metal, not in general. Justice was their first arena headline tour, the album has sold 9.5 million units to date and had one song get radio and MTV play. Compare that to the Black album, where they toured for 2 1/2 years straight and have sold 31 million copies and the entire album was played on radio. This album brought them to the mainstream audience, it broadened their appeal by a huge amount.
People can call it selling out all they want, but if you know anything about James and Lars, you’ll know they don’t do anything they don’t want to do. After Justice they were tired of really long, super complicated songs going 1000 mph. So they got the right producer for them for this album to create shorter, more concise songs but also where James actually learned how to sing. He learned how to warm up, do vocal exercises and actually sing, as compared to his more screaming style before this.
I personally love all eras of the band. From the first 4 albums, to the black album, the load era…maybe not st. Anger so much, but DM, Hardwired and 72 Seasons are all great albums.

Yeah the “hate” has more to do with them shying away from the thrash sound on their first four albums.
They brought on Bob Rock as producer because they were impressed with what he did with Motley Crue (Dr. Feelgood). They stuck with him for the next three albums (Load, Reload and St. Anger) before shifting over to Rick Rubin for Death Magnetic and now Greg Fidelman with their last two albums (Hardwired and 72 Seasons).

The thing about this album is, most metal fans liked it when it first came out, and it got played on repeat. This one just doesn't age as well as their previous albums on repeated listens. It just hits you one day when one of these songs comes on and you realize "damn, that's corny" or "this actually isn't heavy at all" or "where are the fast parts?" Master and Lightning are timeless. This album is very much of its time.

Those who hate the "Black Album" and the Big 4 Thrash Metal bands for a change are the more traditional and even closed-minded Metalheads who see Metal's past (80s and 90s) as the only era that matters.
Those who always expect a band to repeat itself infinitely, to always be extreme, to always repeat its past glories.
People change as they get older, so we can't expect those musicians to remain aggressive all their lives, even Slayer, Napalm Death, etc. have slowed down a bit.
For example, it is seen much more in Extreme Metal, when in Thrash Metal and Death Metal certain bands began to be more melodic, or to be less extreme and more accessible, or more Progressive, but above all with the arrival of new styles such as Groove Metal with Pantera, Melodic Death Metal or Symphonic Black Metal.
Examples: Carcass since 1993, Arch Enemy since they change in mid 2000s, Dimmu Borgir since they became more symphonic, In Flames since the 2000s, etc, even classics like Judas Priest or Iron Maiden.

I had no idea what "Don't tread on me" referred to back in 1992 when I heard it... We thought it came from World War II... but now, I realize it was a flag from the 1775 American Revolution... I did know the snake emblem on the cover of the 'black' album referred to the track.
I felt that Metallica's 'black' album was brilliant... I was blasting that on cassette for years.
It wasn't until 'Load' came out in 1996 that my 'hero worship' of Metallica came to an end while I was in college... 🤣

Great idea for Vivek to adopt this song. He's a revolutionary because our over-bloated corrupt government is at a tipping point. It is a far cry from the ideals of what our Founding Documents put forth. That's why the establishment and corporate media are trying to smear him. Listen to Vivek's long-form talks.
The Black Album gets a lot of shit because it was such a drastic change in their style that was more simple and mainstream friendly. I was only 9 years old at the time so it was my favorite shit back then. It was Metallica mania. I love this album almost equally to their previous four. The song-writing and production are just top notch. If you watch the Year And A Half documentary, you'll gain a great appreciation for what went into this record.

Secrecy is the keystone to all tyranny. Not force, but secrecy and censorship. When any government or church for that matter, undertakes to say to its subjects, "This you may not read, this you must not know," the end result is tyranny and oppression, no matter how holy the motives. Mighty little force is needed to control a man who has been hoodwinked in this fashion; contrariwise, no amount of force can control a free man, whose mind is free. No, not the rack nor the atomic bomb, not anything. You can't conquer a free man; the most you can do is kill him.

The Black album was the first departure from anarchy rock but as any true artist will tell you after so many songs/records/tours you grow and this album Big M started to address life instead of rock. Many people say that's when they sold out but I thing the sales show that is when they really started talking to people soul instead of entertaining teens and making music.

The reason this album gets so much hate is actually 2 fold and has nothing to do with sales...
    1) - Its the album when Metallica went from being a true heavy metal band to being a mainstream rock band. Along with this came many things going on behind the scenes by the band that pissed off a lot of long time fans, greed, bad attitude, etc... hence the "sell out" comments, its not about them making money, it was about how they changed for the worse.
    2) - On top of that, now you have new fans calling the new Metallica "heavy metal" which also pissed off the old fans and even non fan metal heads because no one in the metal scene considers them metal.
This is why you see such harsh comments from old school metal heads.

For me, this stands up there with Pantera's "Walk" as a killer groove metal song of the era.
People need to get over the resentment they have towards Metallica's "sell out" album, especially when soooo many thrash bands followed by trying their own black album, and largely failed. The Black album is to arena metal what the first four were to thrash.
As far as a Metallica song to pump me up in the morning, "Spit Out the Bone" has become my go-to. Best modern Metallica thrash song.

I like Megadeth and Metallica equally. Grew up on both. You should react to Megadeths song The Conjuring from the peace sells album!
