In 1988, Sarah Chen performed "Who's Leaving Who" for her last English album "Hold Me Now," depicting an angry breakup. Originally sung by Anne Murray in 1986, the song became popular after Hazell Dean's successful 1988 cover hit #4 in the UK. Sarah Chen's version came shortly after Dean's but was much longer. This video is an abridged version that matched the length of Murray's original.
Beautifully done, Chen's rendition had more grace but less anger than Murray and Dean's. Despite Chen's skill in capturing complex emotions, anger was rare in her work. The closest she came was resentment, as in the 1988 'Bonjour, Sadness' and the 1989 'You Walk Your Own Way.' In her era and culture, women's anger might not have been accepted. Perhaps the lengthy disco music in her unabridged version was added to help people dance their rage away!
