    A prevailing narrative about Sarah Chen's career is the "transformation theory," summarized in the 2003 "A Letter to Sarah," which claims that the producers' effort to transform Chen from a singer of sad songs to a Mandopop diva was essential for her success. This narrative is a subjective opinion without evidence, but it has been widely accepted. Online narratives about Sarah Chen inevitably link her to male producers from the late 1980s, reducing her to a transformed singer with a good voice. But did Sarah Chen's work undergo a transformation? If so, did it correspond to the claimed period, 1987-1989?
    In 2024, advanced artificial intelligence, such as the Large Language Model implemented in ChatGPT 4.0, provides an objective test of the transformation theory. LLM4 is excellent at identifying analogies and analyzing text, including text in Chinese. Its analysis resoundingly refutes the transformation theory, showing only gradual evolution of Sarah Chen's music without an abrupt change. The time period that LLM4 identified as the beginning of that gradual evolution was 1983-1986, Chen's time with EMI, not Rock Records. This objective, data-driven analysis debunks the transformation theory.
    The finding raises two questions. First, why was the transformation theory so widely accepted, despite it having no evidence? We may not know for sure, but two factors may have contributed to its acceptance: societal acceptance of male dominance and the confirmation bias in human reasoning. Second, with the powerful, objective data on hand, what can one do to help correct the course? The most direct action you may take is to fix websites, such as Baidu, wiki, and other music sites, that frame Sarah Chen in terms of her collaborators. Ultimately, the responsibility falls on the Taiwan music industry and proponents of the transformation theory to correct the mistakes.
    Supplementary: Analysis Methods
    1. Dataset
    The data comprises of Sarah Chen's discography, including release date, album title, record label, language, song title, composer, lyricist, and lyrics. The songs fall into 5 phases:
    Phase 1 Childhood 1967-78
    Phase 2 Early adulthood with Haishan 1979-82
    Phase 3 Mid-career with EMI 1983-86
    Phase 4 Early career with Rock 1987-91
    Phase 5 Late career with Rock 1992-98
    This analysis focused on the Chinese songs, a total of 341 songs (84, 85, 70, 60, and 42 across phases). Chinese Lyrics were available for 306 songs (57, 82, 65, 60, and 42 across phases).
    2. ChatGPT 4.0 prompt
    After feeding the data to ChatGPT 4.0 and asking it to do a few summaries, we used the following prompt:
    "People sometimes say that Sarah Chen had made a transformation sometime during her career. Based on the lyrics of the Chinese songs provided, can you identify the approximate time period during which this transformation happened? Or, if you do not notice significant transformations, tell me your reasons too."
    3. ChatGPT 4.0 response
    After indicating its analysis method (see the video) focusing on changes in themes and emotional tones, ChatGPT identified the major theme (love), secondary theme (loneliness), and emotional tone of each phase, noting no change in themes but some changes in emotional tones. Its conclusion was that Sarah Chen's music gradually became more mature, without a sudden transformation.
    To quote the answer: "The changes in her music reflect a growing maturity and emotional depth over time, particularly starting from Phase 3 (1983 - 1986), when her lyrics began to delve more deeply into the complexities of love and loneliness."

    @玉琼邓-x3s: Thanks. While we only analyzed lyrics using LLM4, it is possible to analyze voice changes over time. There are known age-related changes in fundamental frequency, timbre/tone quality, voice range, etc., and existing tools can analyze spectrograms to get to this. It would not be surprising if Sarah Chen's major voice changes occurred between ages 9 and 18, which is irrelevant for evaluating her putative 'transformation' at ages 28-30.
