Not the Chiefs going downtown it was the Royals stadium. Three suggested sites were given as options for the "new" Royals stadium. With the Royals and Chiefs sharing a complex with 2 separate stadiums, the Royals moving was needed for part of this plan. The other was the funding. I'm not sure clay county wasn't included in the proposed sales tax; the other county that is part of kansas City (I personally live in Clay County). We already pay a tax each year for the kc zoo located in Jackson County. Anyway, this rejected tax was more about the Royals stadium and the downtown location.
There has never been a plan to move the Chiefs downtown. The Royals would move downtown and I think they would be great downtown. The Chiefs wanted to just renovated Arrowhead which is also fine. But KC blew it and now they gambling with both team's future in KC.
@BGWhisperer bike lanes are dumb. This is hill I'm prepared to die on being a lifelong 12! 😉😂 If memory serves me correct....Seattle funded their stadium back in early 2000's with lotto revenue and lotto tax. Along with a small sales tax, they also came out with specific scratch off tickets you could buy to help fund the stadium. The revenue and tax from the sales of these tickets went directly to fund a portion of the stadium. I thought this was a solid approach because you could choose to purchase the tickets to help fund if you were more inclined to do so. Another cool aspect to this approach meant that because it was funded through the people, they choose not to find a corporate naming sponsor for the stadium when finished, and as a nod to the people it was simply "Seahawks Stadium" for the first few years of its life. I do remember that the state held up on its end of the bargain pertaining to the sales tax that woulld be used to fund the stadium, and that was once the tax raised a specific amount of money it was immediately dropped....they didn't just keep it around.
