hiiii! I’m a firm believer that there is an audience for every type of media so if you loved this show, pls let me know what you loved about it! (This is no dig at you, I genuinely would love to hear your thoughts!)
Also despite the title of the video, I DID enjoy this episode more than the rest of the season! GABIMARU’S WIFE???? What do we think anime onlys???

I personally really love this series and will continue to watch it or read it past this episode despite the flaws it has going for it (flashbacks before unearned character deaths, NII-SAN!, inconsistent animation, lack of villains' screentime). There are a lot of the things I love about this show but I'll highlight the main the 3 things I love about it:
The setting kind of reminds me of Alex Garland's "Annihilation" mixed with Sekiro's Fountainhead Palace (my favorite area in all of videogames ever) which is a dope combination I never knew I wanted. Out of the Big Dark 3 (JJK, CSM, and Hell's Paradise), this is the one I consider to have the most interesting setting right off the jump. I love how at the starting portion of the story, nothing makes sense. It creates a genuine sense of curiosity, dread, wonder. As it goes on, things start to make more sense, but to make up for the lessening wonder, it provides satisfying answers to mysteries just like Owen Dennis' "Infinity Train".
The cast of characters are probably my favorite thing about this show, Gabimaru and Sagiri being my favorites. Just when you think they only have this one thing going for them, they surprise by doing something completely different from what you expect from them like how Chobei is a surprisingly smart person even though he just looks like a typical Bakugo look-like brute. They are multi-faceted people with depth. Characters who you think are bad may have a good side and vice versa. This series also does something right that a lot of Shonen fuck up which is how it handles female characters. Since Shonen is meant to cater to cater young males, mangaka don't dedicate as much attention to the characters that the demographic won't resonate with such as the afformentioned female characters, ohh especially them. It has gotten better in recent times but I still feel like how they are treated pales in comparison to male characters. A lot of the time they treated like shipping tools, damsels in distress, objectified objects, or plot devices; as in, the quality of their writing is secondary. Luckily, Hell's Paradise doesn't feel that way. Nurugai, Mei, Yui, and especially Sagiri and Yuzuhira are all great. I'll just focus on Sagiri as a charaacter since not only is she my favorite out of all the female characters, but my favorite in the cast in general. She, to me, is what Tanjiro from Demon Slayer should've been which is a complex but admirable paragon-of-good character. I don't know how, but Yuji Kaku somehow added depth to Sagiri without having to give her piece-of-shit elements to achieve her depth like most Big Dark 3 characters. They didn't have to make her morally gray to make her a "deep" character which is rare. She's very caring, compassionate, and herioc, but she still has her struggles and shortcomings.
Lastly, I like how this series handles its batte royale-like premise.
The thing I appreciate from this series is how it doesn't feel like it's funneling or filtering out all the other characters until there's onle one left like most battle royale stories. This is a problem I have with Squid Game and all other Battle Royale stories. The moment you figure who the writer's favorite character is, you know that they'll be the only one to survive while everyone else dies. Not only does this make the show more predictable, but also makes it feel cheap. If your favorite character isn't the same as the writer's favorite, well say goodbye them and everyone else you like.
Fortunately, Hell's Paradise doesn't suffer from this problem, or at least it doesn't feel that way. Unlike a lot of battle royale, a lot of the characters in this series actually have different endgame goals for this battle royale, some not even conflicting with other characters' goals. This prevents the series from feeling like everyone is fighting each other to death for the same goal, AKA the last-one-standing situation I don't like. The main objective is that the criminals should get the Elixir of Life, but that doesn't necessarilly have to be it. One group may just want to leave immediately; some may want to get the elixir for themselves, while others simply seek glory to be immortalized. Not to mention the executioners on this battle royale (The Asaemon) have completely different goals and win conditions from the criminals altogether. This makes the series feel unpredictable despite the fact that it kills characters less frequently than a lot of battle royale. Man, it feels nice to have my favorite characters last this long in a battle royale.

Yuzuriha's theory about Gabimaru's wife not being real makes no sense. In the abstract, it's plausible that the Iwagakure chief might make an illusory wife to strengthen Gabimaru's dedication to the clan. The problem with the theory is that Gabimaru's wife did the exact opposite of that: she convinced him that killing is wrong and was his inspiration for *leaving* the clan, which is why the chief tried to have him killed. It makes no sense that the chief would create an illusion to drive away his best shinobi, so I suspect that she is actually a real person.

As a manga reader, the manga is 9.5/10 for me, the anime is 8/10 for me. Don't blame you for feeling that way about the pacing. The manga is already on "Chainsaw Man Pacing", and there is zero fluff, so you really can't cut anything when you turn that into an anime. But MAPPA cut out a lot of the panels that provide more context and make the different parts gel together.
MAPPA did the opposite with Chainsaw Man. For the anime, they added a lot of anime-only scenes to provide more context and give things room to breathe. That is what they should have done with Hell's Paradise as well, but they took the opposite approach, which is very unfortunate.
This season really should have been 24 episodes instead of 13. I love this series, but have to agree, it's too fast in a lot of places, and a lot of important story points are glossed over very quickly.
Still very much looking forward to Season 2, because these are issues MAPPA can fix.... if they are willing to invest the resources this series deserves. These are not issues with the source material. The writing in the source material is top notch.... but some of it is not coming through because of MAPPA's production decisions.

I think the reason of your problems with hells paradise is the series being to fast paced since is the assistance writer for chainsaw man it makes all sense 😂. I still think reading the manga is definitely worth while as the art alone is amazing and pulls more of a punch than the anime itself. I still love the series regardless with its supporting cast.

I recommended hells paradise when it first came out and it was only because I read the manga and enjoyed it, but the anime just didn’t hit me like the manga, a lot of inconsistent drawings with a lot of unimpactful scenes where it feels like somethings missing, ended up dropping it and it’s a shame really

I agree with you. At first I had high hopes for this anime, just like its pre-broadcast reputation. This is because it features famous Japanese singers for the OP and ED and the production company, MAPPA, is well-known. However, to be honest, I did not find it very interesting to watch, except for a few depictions. I don't know if this anime is faithful to the original manga, but the setting was also a bit difficult to understand.

In my personal opinion, it was completely faithful to the manga. Id still recommend the manga cause it's a easy quick read and it's not bad at all and I enjoyed binging it. But it's an average to above average typical battle shonen in my personal opinion

After episode 7 or 8 I read the manga. I liked it sure, but it's a fairly short story, and i feel the characters and story generally lack depth. That feeling of moving too fast also happens in the manga. I won't say more obviously but I share your take.

sometimes I think the budget allocation, amount of animation in fight scenes and realtime frustration of animation team, when they are controlled by someone else and constantly pounded for completing the project fast just does not give what they can actually achieve.

I genuinely felt bored with this anime and I thought of dropping it, too! It's so bland, especially at the start.
The blind white-hair dude was the best. *Episode 8* made me continue watching even though the whole season is average so far. 😂

i dropped it halfway thru the first episode. i don't care how good the animation / story is, if i don't like the flow of the dialogue, i won't like the anime. i'm glad i dropped it
