Greetings! First time dropping by - I certainly hope you enjoy this show. It's an emotional roller coaster.
Couple of useful notes - the show is in nine episodes, in three story arcs of three episodes each.
The economy of Piltover (topside) is largely based on mining in a series of fissures the main part of the city is built above. The ore is an environmental hazard, tainting the air and water. Different people are effected in different ways and to different extents, but long-term exposure is often dangerous. Hence the masks on the enforcers.
This show is incredibly information-dense, with lots of things going on in the dialogue, character expressions and movements, and in background details. Almost all relevant plot points (the kind of thing that sometimes confuses first-time watchers) are touched on, but they can be missed. The writing is very natural, without the "I will now give exposition" that can be distressingly common. So re-watching an episode is never a bad idea.
Welcome to Arcane! Avoid spoilers, buckle your seat belt, and get ready!

Just so it's clear Vi and Jinx do not know the crystals are explosive. They do not know the crystals had anything to do with the apartment explosion. You can tell Powder is not even aware she lost one of them and Vi didn't know they existed until Powder showed them to her near the end of the episode. She even asks "what are they?" and Powder answers "I don't know"

They are related! They literally showed their birth parents` corpses at the start of the show in the bridge scene! Their mom had blue hair like Powder and Caitlyn and their dad had black hair, looked like an adult Mylo and was wearing a frying pan helmet which Powder and Ekko wore a smaller version of in the "Enemy" music video!

Regarding the object Powder throws when she's being chased: she filled it full of nails and wanted it to explode. As she's small, she tries to use gadgets to fight.
In regards to masks: you're correct. There's fumes from the mines as well as industrial waste. People in the undercity are used to it but it still damages their lungs over time.
The large building is in Piltover, the northside where the enforcers are from.

Ahhhh the nails thing is cool!
and omg thankyou for the clarification about the largest building 😅 I never worked it out!

Welcome to the world of Arcane, and... I'm sorry. You'll understand as you go. It is a phenomenal show, and everything about it is just... beautifully executed, from the storytelling, to the animation, and even the music. Unlike a lot of shows, there are no filler episodes, and the characters are all... so wonderfully complex. You're going to really enjoy it.

I am already so intrigued to know about your reactions to the following episodes, I give you the "welcome to the playground" I subscribed to your channel to see how this series is going to hit your spirits, without giving you spoilers because once you saw the first one you will get used to what you are going to see, the beginning is brutal with a death scene and two girls in all their innocence look for their loved ones and only see death, the man abandons his weapons and embraces life, but Vi looks back with fury , Powder instead we see her assume everything in silence, when we see the scene of the fight in the streets we hear that violin and we see her observe without reacting, she absorbs everything like a sponge and can only be bad, Vi on the other hand explodes with emotions more than other characters in an entire series but she does it only in the prologue without saying a word, we have almost all the tropes of a classic adventure of young people who face a world of adversities, but I will remind you that this is not Disney where they will be happy or Dreamwork I know where you are going to have a laugh making fun of the cliches, I just want you to prepare yourself emotionally and it will be soon but you should move on because far from being a classic story of overcoming or hope I take it as one where you must mature and accept the harshness because in Arcane everything has rhyme and I ask you to remember Powder's song and its position on the plane, the colors, the situation and what came after, Piltover is a city with stone structures and large bridges where white and gold predominate, lighting and space, the lower district has narrow spaces, iron bridges and a toxic green tone which reveals how unhealthy life is down there, where the enforcers must wear masks possibly without getting used to it, the lighting is key, the music too and the shots are works of art.

The geography of the show is more like the real world compared to the lore. In the lore there is more verticality to the geography. This way lets them crib off of real world Paris (the animation studio Fortiche is French) and makes the relationship between the river (actually more of a strait or canal between two oceans in the lore) and the big council building in the heart of Piltover, and stuff like that more visually intuitive. But it implies that the fisures that the lanes are built in are below the level of the river which isn't _entirely_ implausible since most if not all of New Orleans is well below the level of the Mississippi River, but having mines down there is... hydrodrologically problematic, shall we say. It's one of the a handfull of minor quibbles I have but generally they don't impact the story so I give it a pass.
This show is backstory for a number of characters so either knowing the lore and being able to appreciate the dramatic irony of knowing how the characters end up or not knowing and being surprised are both rewarding. Just knowing the name and appearance of Jinx is in between and not a bad thing. At least you can appreciate the significance when that word is used. Cheers!

Yeah, having a river be the boundary between Piltover and Zaun is great thematically (THE BRIDGE) but is realistically problematic, since as you say, most of Zaun is supposed to be underground, and water flows down. It could be possible that there's some sort of impermeable boundary of rock between the riverbed and the south side that keeps the water contained, but since the lore (in game, anyway) is supposed to be that Zaun was created by a massive geological collapse, that seems unlikely.
