I have watched hundreds of YT guitar lessons over the last 10 years, and Ian continues to show me something elegant and simple that I didn't really know. He keeps doing this. Time after time. Chapeau, sir. Best learning channel on YT.
Agreed! He’s a gem!
I loved that you didn't just talk about playing arpeggios but explained the value of the chord notes to the music and the melody.
This is the most accessible way I've ever had theory explained. Now I have a clue why knowing which notes are which in each chord is so important.
The only teacher on RUclips that actually explains how to LISTEN
Dude, that really made sense. It's nice to hear someone answer the biggest question which is Why? Your videos really highlight this. Keep em coming
You are the first instructor to explain major and minors along with the melody so well. You are one of the best guitar teachers on RUclips. Thank you for sharing you knowledge
Sometimes, you get to hear a description that makes your palm hit your face. The third was that moment. Thank you. The playing on the 5th for the chord change is so natural too, but only once explained. Thank you so much.
And remember the fifth from the third is perfect Harmony.
Tried the rest, you're the best. All your lessons are new and challenging and sound so melodic yet you make it easier to understand than your peers and make me want to learn more and just play for pleasure. You make music look so easy, it isn't but I'm trying.
Thank you, now I realized the importance of notes, not just strumming my strings without understanding them.
The information and the explanation that you’re giving is very deep into the making of a musician. Understanding how to lay the foundations in your head helps connect the dots. Please don’t stop this is fabulous and you have a brand new follower who will share your wisdom with my band.
Finally someone who can simply explain the feel and logic behind a melody. Thank you so much!!!
I hope this man never stops making videos. Always finding a way to add another piece to the massive guitar playing puzzle
I gotta say, you're taking subjects that are moderately hard to understand for self taught folks like myself and making them SO simple. Thanks for the help! My mind is blown!
Such a GOOD teacher and an excellent motivator, thanks Jocelyn! Have a nice day…
This hitting the 5 before moving to another chord is gold! haha! I must know more! I hope your videos hold all kinds of jems like this!
Im here watching the whole video. Awesome
Known the mechanics of this for ages....but this made me think more and was very helpful. The role of the 5th and any extension note. Thanks for the meandering session.
Your lessons are always so timely. Some of the best content on RUclips!
Oh man! This is golden stuff right here. Thank you for this video. I now see chords in a new light.
Thanks!
Awesome lesson! Learning the job of the 1, 3, 5, 7 notes of a chord is very inspiring. Thanks
Great lesson Stich! This is exactly what I needed with where I am at in my guitar learning journey! I'm going to definitely work on doing this to create melodies. I think this will help with ear training as well learning the difference in the intervals. Thanks
Complete sense, never finish watching before the end.
Nobody can break down the fundamentals as well as you do. My go to channel for getting to know the ins and outs of not just guitar but music in general. Thank you.
My goodness, you are such a great guitar teacher! I’ve also been watching your chord melody vids, ie the Beatles Eleanor Rigby and Two of Us…regards from the UK
Dude, I don't know if you'll know what I'm talking about, but I remember once, when I was trying to learn to play, I was having trouble tuning my guitar, so I brought it to my roommate Geoff, who was the single most naturally talented (and well trained) guitarist I've ever met. As he was tuning my guitar, he started just riffing with it, and I swear, for like 5 minutes, he sat there and had a conversation with me THROUGH THE MUSIC. No words, he'd simply play something and look at me, and I'd KNOW what he was "saying". It was the strangest, most incredible musical experience I've ever had, but I've never understood HOW it happened. Have you ever heard of anything like that before? Ever experienced it?
I play at mandolin and your text of musical theory can be applied to really any instrument! thanks! joe
I discovered you through Sean's channel. Turns out you have amazing content on your channel. Thank you so much and love you.
This was definitely useful. Like all of your videos I feel like I'll be chewing on this one for awhile, but am super excited for the improvement it'll bring to my playing. Please keep making these videos! They've helped me so much!
It has helped on a problem I've been having for a long time!! THANKS
Great advice at 6:17, bringing home finding those cheeky thirds!
How amazing it is to actually do this and hear how much better I sound. I need more practice of course, but just paying attention to those notes made the guitar pop. Thank you so much for passing on these skills. Your explanations are also fantastic, you are a true master.
You’re an excellent teacher. I totally got what you were talking about. Thank you.
Been watching Stitch a good couple years. This is my favourite lesson. Top man! ✊🙂
Yep, spot on ...perfectly understood. Thanks Mr. Stich
Brilliant! Several lightbulb moments - thanks
Yes! This was very helpful and eye opening thanks for shedding some light on the 1 3 5. I really like the concept of accenting the 5 to build tension prior to a chord change, very good lesson for this point in my learning. THANK YOU my friend!
Thank you, great content as always. Using the fifth for movement is enlightening.
But really I just gotta say LOVE THAT FRETBOARD COLOR! First thing I notice when you use that guitar.
Makes perfect sense and extremely illuminating. Excellent!
“Am I doing ok?” ..yeah man, best videos ever! Wish I could find someone like you in real life to play guitar and hang out with. Found you through Sean Daniels, and I’m jealous when I watch and listen to you guys goof around and jam. You guys are awesome, thanks
You are a genius. I had to stop and go to the guitar and check for myself is it really real?
It was. Yes I did nod my head to concur with your thoughts. I did also feel annoyed by that “some invisible irritant” flying through your nose. 🤓
I was there right near your desk taking instructions. Not a second got lost.
For the first time could see the D-minor and C major connection. Many Indian Hindi songs have these Dminor to C jump many many many. But I couldn’t connect them or make sense out of it, other than mechanically playing them sometimes with decent sound interspersed with many a times a dumb-muted sound.
But the 5th of dminor to the 3rd of Cmajor sound when I could connect blew me up. Now this opens up a an ocean of possibilities.
Probably innumerable people might have tried to say this same thing, but only today I could connect.
Back to where I started. You are indeed a genius. Furthermore your thoughts flow at a speed where anyone can understand.
Take a bow. Respect.🙏🙏🙏🙏
Wow. Now I know why I like to hit that 5th on the one beat and hold it through the measure. I could always feel that tension/push I just didn't know how to find that note other than by ear.
Now I know. It's the fifth. Thanks!
Perfect lesson for an old guy picking up guitar. Baby steps. Thanks Ian
Love your style of teaching. Relaxed and easy to follow. Have subbed 👍
Very cool man. Keep on talking you’re helping to bring out the magnificent musician in me
We’re here, and we get it! You’re a great teacher, thank you.
Great lesson!! Saw many videos but this opens my eyes/ears. Thank you very much!

Another top lesson Stich, you have a gift for teaching.
so much helpful. I have been searching this in youtube for years!
Food for the soul. Warms my heart on a freezing morning.
Getting a feel for each interval’s personality is a personal thing... and a door... well done for recognising and communicating.... brilliant as ever.
I certainly didn’t turn it off!! Excellent lesson - I love your teaching style. Patreon soon...
Wonderful demonstration, I absolutely love it. Many thanks for sharing this.
Excellent vid, gotta practise emphasizing the 3rd in my playing. Thanks bud 👍
That was fantastic information. I just can't believe how much this help me make actual music. THANKS
Very lucid, coherent and informative, it made me want to explore music theory a bit more.✌❤
Thank you for this. You are a great and inspirational teacher. I loved the way you teach.
Great lesson! I started practicing pick accuracy last week. This concept gives me a great way to do it without it being boring while at the same time adding another layer to my playing.
I love the way you explain. So easy to follow.
Wow.....a real kick-starter - thanks Stitch!
Such a fantastic tutorial. One of the best virtual lessons I've had!
Brother your such a huge blessing to so many who are growing thanks man for keeping it real awesome teacher
I can not wait to try this out, It is what I have been trying to do for a long time.
Hey, I really enjoyed whatever you were playing! Excellent for improvisation! Thank you very much!
You stiched again!1😅
Very good teacher, thank you for sharing. 🕊🥀💐🎚🙏
Always taking the mystery out of the music. Thank you!
Love your lessons, man. I just put down my electrics to learn the acoustic. This is an awesome lesson. Thanks
Great video. I really needed to hear someone bring all the pieces together. Absolutely one of the best discussions I've heard on the feeling of sounds and mood created.
Yes, this made sense. It's interesting that in a lot of things, people hear things or see things and are moved by them without really knowing why. In the case of these specific notes, as listeners, I think everyone "hears" tension in music but couldn't say what it was beyond saying, "it needs to go end/resolve/go somewhere" Great video!
I’m learning music theory talking.
Your doing a great job of talking it in words.
Eventually we’ll meet in the middle. Love it.
Great instruction and description Stich. A light bulb moment right there, thank you.
I find this very interesting. I've been doing this for years by ear. Since covid began I've been trying to learn some theory and these videos are really helpful, Ian. Thanks.
You make things very clear to me ( and many others I guess ). Thanks !
that was amazing bro made me think of my chords and strumming patterns in a completely different way. i love your delivery style keep up the great vids instant subsciber here.
Stitch, I like this. Simply and well done. I am excited to apply it. You are the best. Love your videos.
Seeing you soon right?!
Awesome information. Well put and articulated.
We love you Stitch you're doing a great job thank you
Absolutely an amazing lesson. I wish I found you when I first started learning guitar. You have many gifts such as playing and teaching.
Great lesson Ian! You tied together a lot of concepts I have been trying to work together. Thank you
Love your kindness. We are crescendo 🎵🎵🎵 like..ing your style of teaching how to explore the fb. Clap ...Clap.. Peace to the 🌍
Personally, I think this is a wonderful lesson!!! I have been doing this for years, I just call it arpeggiating chords. I started doing this years ago primarily because as an entertainer I wanted my music to sound better than just simply strumming chords which, sometimes is necessary, but there is so much more! Now, I have simply been doing this because it sounded good to me and I am pretty much an autodidactic player so this has come to me, I suppose innately. However, just hearing you talk about what I am already doing and offering the theory behind it will certainly make me much better at it. Although, I do not write music per se, I write my own arrangements and in doing so, I do use many variations of chords to add color, and that, "one note", makes a tremendous difference. Thanks so much.
Awesome explanation on the fifth interval!
Thank you so, so much for doing this video. I still have a lot to learn but this has been a real eye opener and beautiful explained both verbally and physically with a good speed to it. Thanks again 🙌
Ma Carter was the momma of this style. your a good teacher.
grreat lesson, thanks from germany
Wonderful Mind! Very well explained Thanks Stitch 🎸
I already have knowledge of this material, however, hearing your thoughts of how to use this knowledge, I always find myself saying, "Ah Ha". Nice guitar! :-)
That was really super useful. Really appreciate it.
Made perfect sense. I learn something new with every one of your videos, thank you!
Oh my.
I don't know if I'll be able to actually put it in practice, but it makes absolute sense.
Great video. Would love to see a follow up on the little flourish you sprinkle in your strumming pattern at times.
Thank you. I will study this until it's my own. Then I will apply it.
Great session. Thanks so much. You are terrific
I enjoyed this video very much and got a lot out of it. Tried it on my guitar and was pleasantly surprised at how I could add Melody and flavor or texture to the strumming of the chords. Very cool thanks
I’m only a beginner but I really loved the way u made those chords sound beautiful.
Oooh, a little fly right here...........OMG moments bud, thanks for your work......
You are an amazing teacher, thank you.
I'm following. I'm here. Thanks!
Great lesson. I’ve been trying to figure out how to add color and melodies to my chording. Also how to play riffs or embellishments out of chords. It is difficult for me to do while I’m singing. I played and sang for years but always in a band. And usually just chord rhythm. Now I’m wanting to do solo gigs and I’m terrified because it’s just me and my guitar. No safety nets. Anyways, you’re my favorite teacher. Thank you for your teaching videos
Really good stuff sir.
