*Yes I meant "I never use AF-S" not AF-C lol my bad.

    • @White_Thorn_Media

In AF-S mode aperture stay open wide till you take a picture so is much easier to find focus. If you use for example 85mm f1. 8 lens in AF-C mode and aperture you set is f5.6 - that settings make much more trouble for camera to find focus because aperture is small but when you switch to AF-S, camera looking for focus with wide open aperture f1.8 and after that close it to f5.6. So in low lights situations AF-S is King. Hope I explained this clearly. Sorry for my English.

Great video thanks. Just a note on the Lock-on modes - these activate subject tracking and are great for fast moving subjects - it's like Eye AF but for everything except eyes! I don't do weddings but do lots of events and some performing arts. Lock-on AF: Centre is my default AF setting. I move the camera to centre on the subject, activate AF and then recompose my image. I find this much faster and easier than messing about with the joystick or touchpad to move the AF point, it's a very fluid way of working.

i Under estimated the AF-C on my A7rii, i only use it for eye AF .I will surely be using AF-C more now thanks to you for this simple explanation. There is also a problem when there are multiple faces in a shot and you are in WIDE AREA , it is near impossible to get the right face unless you change the AF area and then you point it over and press the eye-AF button to lock it.. The more you know.....thanks for this!Subbed!

Rami H to choose a face when in Wide Area, place it in the centre of the frame then press the shutter or AF button, no need to switch modes. Same applies when using Eye AF with Wide area. That said, I rarely use Face Detect now, Eye AF does the same thing but is more controllable IMO.

AF-M will only engage automatic magnification if you have a focus by wire lens. On fully manual lenses you have to dedicate a button for that.

  • @ansonlee3533

Chris, do you realize that by using AF-S mode and together with face focus tracking being enable, when you click the shutter half way, it actually focusing 2 faces with 2 green box instead of once focusing one face when using AF-C mode.

This was a very helpful video for a 10+ years Nikon shooter starting to switch over to Sony! There's one question I haven't found the answer to in any videos on RUclips so far... with eye AF, how do you choose which eye you want to focus on? @RamiH 6 лет назад

Hi Colleen, this is a general issue with everyone shooting at a shallow depth of field. The only way is to try and get the people to line up as much as they can in the same distance next to each other , if not then there is no way to get them all in focus , it is just physics, unless you stop down a bit depending on your distance, the further you are the more In focus they will all be as a general rule, the closer you get the wider the gap becomes and difference apparent.

    • @ChrisTurnerPhotographer
      @ChrisTurnerPhotographer  6 лет назад

Rami H yeah pretty much. I’d usually shoot a group at f2 if I can get them in a straight line (just because I like to push the limits lol) otherwise I’ll stop down to about 2.8 or 3.2 and just keep them straight. It also depends on the lens so a 24mm at f2 will have a wider depth of field because of depth compression

Chryseas S. Yeah, my a9 doesn't have it either. But I know what it is because I also have Sony a7 1st gen. Focusing outside that area is much slower on a7, so this frame helps you to keep that in mind.

Hi great video How i set my eye auto focus on my a6000

when you have eye detect on it continues to focus on the eye even when its outside of the focus spot! I had no idea it did this.
Is there a way to apply the same principle to face detect?
    BTW, great video!

Hi Chris, I am new to Sony. I was trying the method you described where you can choose which person you want the eye AF to lock on by putting the AF box on their face and then clicking the eye AF button. But it doesn't seem to be working on my A7riii, I suspect it might be because of the new v3.0 firmware. Any ideas? Thanks.

What focus area do you have your camera in

@@ChrisTurnerPhotographer I was in expand flexible spot. It looks like if the eye is in the expanded area around the main square and you press the assigned eye AF button, it will jump from face to face. I just did a quick retest with the normal flexible spot and it seems it sticks to the person's eyes that were inside the box when the eye AF was pressed.

can i move all the focusing options on the a7r2 like you did with the joystick on focus zone or can i only move the flexible spot

Wouldnt afs be better for focus re-composing? Or do you find moving your focus point with afc to be a better option for framing up your shot?

what button did you set up for eye-focus? I have it set to the AEL, and AF-ON for BBF, and with four faces, it still only picks one and does not allow me to pick another face in the group. What am I missing in what setting if you know?

Have you tried the Nikon Z7 ? I think A7R3 is slow in general....

Yeah it’s a lot slower than the A7R3...

Chris Turner I don’t know if my A7R3 has issues, but I feel it is much slower than the Z7! Even to turn it on take some seconds! I have been trying the z7 and it’s fantastic! Your videos are great, keep it going!

Is there a way to switch between eyes with Eye Auto Focus? I've noticed a couple of times when shooting wide open if my model isn't square on sometimes the EAF grabs the back eye which at 1.4 leaves the eye closest to the camera out of focus. Is this something you've seen happen?

    • @ChrisTurnerPhotographer

Yeah happens sometimes. Not often for me. The best way is just to release the button and then press it again
