Sony a7R only use contrast detection. Wish Gary made the distinction and provided info on it. He says "applies for all a7 . . ." Which might mean all a7 series - so it doesn't mean that.

2:2 that type of autofocus also available on the A7sII? Because I have it since more than one year, I never had to use the autofocus too much until now but I will have to, but it seems that I can't find how to get this tracking dots (I only found how to enable the standard face detection but without these dots).

Sorry you lost me. With a a7iii or a a6500, if you are in AF-C and area wide, how do you "lock on" to either an object (ie. Pet) or a face? If you can lock onto a moving object in "wide" area, and follow it while firing, why is lock on flexible spot (and various choices) even needed?

    Hi folks,
I need a bit of help in sorting a problem with my A7 lll. I have tried to set the focus mode in AF-S but every time I try to film it reverts back to AF-C. I know that the 'Movie' mode (top dial) only offers AF-M and AF-C but to get around that I set all my preferences in M mode (top dial) and save them to one of the top presets 1 and 2 (top dial).
I have looked through the entire menu system to see where I might be going wrong but to no avail. If anyone can offer a solution I would be grateful.
    Happy weekend.

Real big issue I am having is that background shudders, focus hunting whenever the subject moves during an interview. Its not noticeable on the viewfinder or EVF but when I get back to my rushes you can notice and turns the shot. I have had to revert back to manual focus for the time being. Gary, I know you know your "stuff" but you don't mention in this video that Sony sneaked in a change to the focusing system whilst issuing firmware for uncompressed raw files and internal overheating issues. They did it because some of the Sony G lenses have a focus shift problem and so now if you've got your lens set at f8 and try tracking a subject it fails because the camera doesn't use the max aperture of the lens (as a DSLR would do) but uses the f8 setting. At f8 the phase detection AF fails and the lens will hunt like you wouldn't believe. It happened to me recently and 7 of my lens had the same problem. Yes they work at max aperture (in this video Gary conveniently has the lens set at f4) but at smaller apertures it fails miserably. Anyone who is interested can search the next and they will find thousands of photographers very upset about this. Sony have known about it for over all year and done nothing about it. Before anyone questions my motives, I ditched my Canon system and bought a Sony A7RII camera and it IS awesome but Sony have wrecked it with this change. Why don't they issue also firmware update to give us the choice between wide open and closed down focusing? I am hoping Gary doesn't delete this comment but instead uses his influence and gets Sony to resolve this situation and makes me and many thousand other A7RII users happy again

      Depends on the environment.
Indoors, something like f/2.8 and a high enough ISO to get your shutter speed to at least 1/250 (ideally, faster), continuous AF, and high speed rive mode for bursts.

Thank you for taking the time to explain these features! I have the a7ii, and these autofocusing features don't seem to work during video. If I lock focus on the subject before pressing record, it tracks but if a new object comes in I can't get the AF to focus on the new subject. I could have sworn that before I started using BBF the video mode would automatically focus (without me needing to press the shutter or AEL button halfway) on the subject within my focus setting (center, flexible, etc.). I also know that I don't have ALL the features because I have a Sigma lens.
Could someone tell me in short: Will the video mode automatically focus on a subject within my focal point without needing to press the shutter/AEL button?
What is the best way to change focus during video without MF?

  • @gregnielsen7924
    @gregnielsen7924 7 лет назад

Would it be correct to say there are two basic operational methods for locking onto moving objects like this? 1) The "hold shutter button half way" method in the 'Wide" or 'Lock On-AF' AF modes and 2) The "Use a programmed button" in the 'Flexible Spot' AF mode. This second one needs the extra "Center Lock on Focus" button pressing sequence to turn it off and on.

Well.. I am a sports action photographer, and I disagree somewhat to what Gary is teaching here. When I am shooting high speed sports I use Center Spot focus. This puts the tracking of the object in the hands of the photographer. His method only puts that control onto the camera. I choose to track the action with center spot thus assuring focus with continuous focus.

Hi Gary, thank you for sharing your skills and knowledge! I enjoyed this video; yet a s a new owner of the A7 Mark II I must ask, what do you mean by 'christen' the selection in this video? Do you mean you hold the shutter button half down and then press from that point to take the shot? I am trying to photograph birds in-flight and struggling with this one.
Thank you very very much - Jim

I use a6300 and sigma 18-35 with mc 11 adapter. Since I did updates for firmware and also for sony system, I am not able to choose AF-C. Does anyone know why? Is it Normal?

Since you're using a third party lens and adapter, there are several variables that could causing the issue. Since it is likely the result of the lens and/or the MC 11, we recommend contacting Sigma directly for troubleshooting. They may have a new firmware fix for that gear to restore compatibility.

Hello Gary. First of all Thank You for ur technical videos. and I have a issue shooting pic with flash on with my a6300 and that is: while I am pressing shutter button all the way down, sometimes it's unable to shoot a pic , it is like hunting at that time but not shooting. and to work it properly I'm again turning off and on the camera then it's working properly for first few pics and again the same issue follows. Why is it happening? Please help me.

If the camera is on single-shot focus, it will not fire until it achieves sharp focus. Do you have the focus assist beam on the flash to help lock focus?

I do not know this "focus assist beam" brother gary. even iam using wide focus and with on board flash of sony a 6300.

Gary first thanks for the outstanding videos, on the a6000 when you use the la sony adapter does the width of the adapter have any effect on the focal length? I know on with the crop sencor its longer. By 1.5 i think
    Thanks Tom
