I've worked as a photojournalist for the past 35 years. When I need a small, pocketable setup, I use my A5100 (24mp) and a Kamlan 50mm f/1.1 (great for portraits). Take your time (use focus peaking, bracket your exposures), and you will be stunned with the results. Thanks for this excellent video, Mark.
Thanks for sharing! I wanted to learn photography. So I got a used Sony A7s2. Then lens I got with it was damaged. I thought buying a zoom lens would help me practice diversely with different focal lengths. The thing is I don't keep my camera with me. I should have got a fixed focal length lens (which would have also been smaller) and a smaller camera so that I can keep this handy with me always. I need to practice more and more. The setup I have currently I just don't carry with me. Keeping in mind I want to click pictures in low light during evening and night after office, please share some suggestions for a body and lens to have with me everyday.
@@sweetphilly2 Focus peaking means that the camera indicates in colour on the display which areas of the image are currently in focus while you are focusing manually. Another aid is the focus magnifier, which allows you to enlarge a section of the image in order to focus even better. Exposure bracketing means that you take several pictures with different exposure times or use the exposure compensation function to take a number of pictures (3 - 5). You then either select the best exposed image or merge the images to create an image with a so-called high dynamic range.
I sold my a5100 after I bought an a6400 as an upgrade. I also bought a Kamlan (100 euros in 2019) at that time when I had both so this was a surprise comment to see this combination. It really does make a good combo when speed isn’t an issue. Image Quality wise, the sensor is as good as you need.
I use my A5000 with an Industar 69 28mm f2.8 lens and an M39 adapter. The Industar 69 is basically a pancake lens, and together with the A5000 you have a great little setup that you can easily slip into your pocket. Some of the best photos I took in the past year were taken with this setup. Highly recommended!
The A5000 was my first Sony Alpha camera. I bought mine in 2014. I bought an A7II in 2018 and an A7IV in 2022. I use the A5000 all the time still because of its compact size and yes the image quality of the A5000 is excellent for a ten year old mirrorless camera.

This is my baby. I bought the a5000 10 years ago at Best Buy for $300. Came with the kit lens (which is pretty bad) and a $100 gift card. Love how tiny it is. Its been my main camera since because its allowed in places where other cameras are not. I go through metal detectors and people don't ever give it a second look.

If you already have an a7 S2 I and want low light, I would get a Sony 50 1.8 which is cheap, around 150 euros and use that. Then upgrade depending depending on what you want. I used an a7 mark 1 with that 50 1.8 at drag racing and offroad events and it turned out great, clean photos even if the a7 focused a bit slow. Then, an offroad buggy went off track and ran over a couple of backpacks. The 50 was destroyed.😅
My first Sony e-mount was the a5100 and it captured some incredible shots for my travel photography series. Mt. Rainer, St. Helen, Banff and the list goes on. I recently just pulled it out and dubbed it the ‘Dad Cam’ small enough for us to use when we travel and want to capture the kids on our travels!
the a5100 is a big step forward. i got one last September brand new in a sealed box with one-year warranty for 11,000THB (313USD at that time). perfect for experimenting with CCTV lenses like the Fujian 35mm 1.4 and all the fantastic manual lenses by Brightin Star, Risespray, 7Artisans, TTartisan... edit: the focus peaking comes in very handy in absence of the viewfinder.
That is an understatement! The a5100 is a bad camera, compared to what Sony has today, even on the entry-level. It has decent autofocus, awful ergonomics, and a lack of buttons and a reduced customisability. But it's tiny, ultra-cheap used, and has a flash and a good touchscreen to put your focus point! The a6000 is the much more useful camera, in autofocus and ergonomics, despite not having a touchscreen. However, compared to the a5100, the a5000 is a garbage camera for not much lower price, and the NEX-5T for instance (one of the best of the NEXs) is awful as well - has that old techonolgy of touchscreen, which is awful and semi-responsive.
I thought the 5100 was basically a nex bodied, without evf, version of the a6000, so has the same AF abilities including the wider pd area than the 5000 also has the a6000 24mp sensor vs the 20mp. If so it should be a really capable pocketable camera.. just lacking certain creature comforts.

I agree 100%, I was lucky to snag one, body only, in a battered box on ebay for £50 around 5 years ago. These days, it would be more like £150. I’ve captured some of my favourite images on this camera purely because it’s so small, I was able to put it in my work rucksack. Great video!

The older NEX series cameras were amazing as well. I look back at photos I took with my NEX 5R back 7+ years ago and the quality and detail is surprisingly good, even by today's standards.
People are so obsessive with their bodys, I bought a alpha6000 in 2023 because she was cheap and I knew its all about the lens and my eye :) Hell a camera from 20 years ago would make great pictures with the right lens
Yeah I realised this after 6yrs of using a6300; my images were not bright n sharp as others with the kit lens. Now I feel, I should have ordered a good lens too. Lens is a game changer.
I occasionally do commercial work and event photography. For that, I use manual lenses a lot, even on my A7III. My favorite one is a vintage Canon FD 135mm f2.5 - it is tack sharp, buttery smooth in operation with a very long throw and some really good weight, with a built in lens hood. Stop it down to f/4 and you can shoot it all day. The best thing is: you can get those for well under 100 bucks.
used Sony cameras are quite expensive (for a used camera) in recent years with the vintage lens+adapter boom ... it's almost impossible to find a 10 years old NEX series for less than 150-200 dollars

I need to thank you. I have been in a creative rut for quite a while now. I have not been taking pictures for far too long. I’ve been saving for a new full frame Sony mirrorless for a long time and something always comes up that sets me back. Kids sick or something in the house breaks and needs fixed. I picked up the a5000 a few years ago at target clearance for $99. This video coupled with some of the lens recommendations have me excited to start taking more photos again. I’ll have that opportunity soon for a long weekend on Lake Michigan. So thank you again! Can’t wait to take some pictures!
Me too! Fantastic Video, must replace my A6000 and is wanderings which camera I should get as replacement! Since the sensors are just about the same, I simply go with the most budget friendly. Video & frames per second are not huge factors for my basic use!
I still use my A5100 and a camlink for a zoom/teams setup. I get nothing but compliments on my image quality. Wish they would do a modern version of the a5100 with a mic jack, new battery and 10-bit color and a higher resolution display. It would be all I need.
That’s my set up too. I have the a5100 paired with the Viltrox 24mm f1.4. Looks really nice! Along with good lighting, it’s a fantastic camera for Zoom.
I have had a Sony nex F3 for many years and it is the best color camera I have ever owned. I love wearing it and the photo is great. It beats out my other 5 camera brands from 2020 - 2024 that I own.😊
I don't know about the a5000, but the a5100 actually has really nice 1080p video (nicer than the 1080p video that later a6300 and a6500 bodies have). However, the a5100 overheats in about 10 minutes in a 75-degree day. The a6000 also has nice 1080p video, despite not having picture profiles, since it only has creative styles.
might be true that the sensors have not changed in terms of size, but there are many other changes like higher video resolutions, faster sensor readings, better/faster focus, more focus points, higher resolutions(but can also mean highger noise because of smaller pixels) and better software whigh can result in less noise, ...
Great points!!! I love the way that U're different from the rest of the RUclipsrs especially those jumping on promoting every single latest, greatest n most expensive gears! I'm a serious photographer and until now, I still can't justify for replacing my Sony A6000 (which I brought in 2014, sorry Sony) ... and I can take any photos just about as good as any latest cameras! The main reason is, in today's digital age, the camera itself is just a light capturing device and once the image is captured into 1s n 0s digitally, one can easily manipulate the image computationally ... whether it is lens distortions, noise, saturations, colors, sharpness, contrast, len boken and etc! I sincerely hope more people who are seriously into photography spend more time into studying lightings, composition, perspective, post production and developing one's artistic style to become a great photographer rather than focusing endlessly on the gears ... and leave changing every latest cameras and lens to the gear-heads!!!
The Sony A5000 was my first camera , I only sold it as there was no external Microphone input, replaced it with a A6400 with the useless flip up screen, which I then 'downgraded' to the Sony ZV E10, which I personally believe is one of the best cameras gram for gram, I have not found any shortcomings in that camera for anything I want it for.
It depends on why you're using the camera. The a6700 is a rather strong camera for photography and filming. Any old Sony APS-C camera that you can find for a low price is a good idea because you won't have to replace lenses if you move to an A6700. Tamron 18-300 is undoubtedly the greatest bargain lens for photography, and Sigma 10-18 is best for wide angle. For videographers, the Sony 18-105 power zoom and Sony 10-20 power zoom are excellent lenses. For novices who wish to combine both photography and filmmaking, the 18-105 power zoom is the greatest option for affordability and quality and versatility.
I appreciate your commentary about the advances in camera sensor tech, as to videography vs still photography. There's so much BS online about "outdated" "obsolete" cameras - that are absolutely NOT even if they are (gasp!!!) ten years old. I enjoy it when someone shows some love for these "old" Sony cameras. I own some newer and "fancier" ( and more co$tly) Sony cameras - and also still shoot with a NEX-6. It has an EVF, so although not quite as small as the a5000 and with an older 16mp sensor, I stick with it. I enjoy putting an excellent lens on the NEX-6 because like the a5000 you can get some fine captures that way.
I have a Nex5 and an a6300 plus a couple lenses including the TT Artisans 27mm which was around $150. Two cameras and three lenses all totaled was less than $1000 Recently took the 6300 and the 27mm out for a Sunday afternoon at an outdoor pop up market. The only issue i have with the camera is the battery life but The camera worked fine hooked up to a small power bank which fit easily in my back pocket 😁. I also own a Nikon Z6ii which i absolutely love but the size and weight of the Sony makes street photography blast.
I own an A7iv but I still bought the Canon 5D, Nikon D700 and Fuji X-T1 for the character of the older cameras....its amazing what those old cameras were capable of from a purely image quality perspective Man looking at your photos makes me miss melbourne, if i ever move to aus, it has to be melbourne
In January, on a whim, I bought a $300 A5100 from MPB. It's a surprisingly tiny camera compared to the flagship MFT cameras I usually use. However, both the A5100 and A5000 are nowhere near $100 at MPB now. Try 3x more. The A5100 impressed me so much that I bought a new A6700, mostly for its autofocus, stabilization and video upgrades over those older models. Now I have access to the vast E-mount lens universe. Still getting used to the size-weight increases vs my MFT gear.
Love these older Sony mirrorless cameras. I still have a NEX5T and the weird a3000 that looks like a dslr but is mirrorless and came out the same time as the a5000. With good glass the photos are beautiful.
My Sony a5100 would overheat and stop recording video at about the 5-7 min mark. Other than that, it's a great camera. Still have it. Upgraded to the Sony a6400....and couldn't be happier. Has everything a novice, slightly camera-experienced ME needs.
Mark Wiemels Hi Mark I have been out with my a5000 today taking test shots with a vintage lens for a video I am doing, I have had mine for about 4 years. I got it for next to nothing as it was bare bones with no parts other than the kit 16-50 electric zoom lens which is awful. I bought it as a third camera behind my Pentax SLR and sony zv1 vlogging camera. I mainly use it for low light and night shots as its so much better than the Pentax. I have a sigma art 19mm 2.8 a sony 18-55 ios kit lens and today I have been playing with a vintage m42 helios 135mm 2.8, the results have been great as is the camera I love mine. Miss having a hotshoe mount but memory card placement is an upside over some other sonys as is all the built in modes.
I still use my Sony nex 3n for photos sometimes although the canon m50 beats it at indoor mixed light/ natural light photography as the Sony photos need a lot of color correction they quickly turn out too dark and too blue indoors
I had Nex-5T as my first camera and omg I loved it and used it for almost 10 years before I changed it for a6400 (while keeping the lenses). Upgrade was definitely needed, but that camera still has a place in my heart. And I think it's a fantastic starter camera. Sony makes it so easy to get into photography! P. S. I keep waiting for the ttartisan 35mm autofocus lens. It's not available for sony mount anywhere at the moment
My first ILC was an NEX5 . I have over the years upgraded to an a6000. an a6300 and now to an a6700. When I look back on the NEX5 pictures, in most cases they are comparable to the photos taken with the other cameras using my original lenses. Upgraded lenses make more of a difference.
Soon nearly a year on, are there alternatives now? Seeing used A5000's go for about $300-500 online, a far cry from when the video was released and the point of the video. Would be great if there was an update.
I thought that was one of the NEX line cameras. I loved the NEX 5N, a 13-year-old camera that I enjoyed taking photos with. I had it briefly before I sold it to get the A6400.
I've used the brilliant a5000 for a few years with the kit lens, which produces superb results (largely through in-camera processing) despite what people say. Definitely one of the best bargains out there.
For me the best sony camara is the A6000, the A5000 has some problems with autofocus that doesnt happen in A6000. The diferrence between both is the price 250 vs 100 i think is worth it
everything I use, except my action cameras, are from 2010 to 2016 and I love how they all look. All my camcorders, cine cameras, DSLRs, point and shoots. It blows me away how they all hold up after all these years. And the price of most of these are in reach of almost anyone out there. $10 for a good point and shoot to $600 for a cine camera that at one time cost over $7k. Newer isnt always better.
Great video! I'm looking to get back into photography after a few years away. Is there a telephoto lens you would recommend? Strongly considering this or the A6000 since I do like a viewfinder. THANKS!
Which camera would you consider an upgrade from this one is terms of night shots and view finder without breaking the bank and still considering low budget?
I am after a super compact camera setup for travel. I have a lot of potential candidates but have not got to a point where i am really happy with the choice. I have owned a a5100 and really liked it but my current setup i use the most is a fuji xa7 , 12mm samyang manual lens and the kit 15-45 , this setup weighs in at 760g , i also have a few cameras like a fuji x20 at 350g and a canon g9x at 200g but really miss the 12mm lens , i find this is my preferred lens but finding a compact with this focal length is impossible . My ideal system would be a compact with wide angle capability or possibly a m43 with a compact wide angle fixed lens but havent been able to find anything that weighs in at a significant reduction from the weight of the fuji xa7 setup, any suggestions?.....

The latest tech is not always optimal unless you are a high end pro. My criteria for camera shopping is that the results have to at least beat my phone, which I already have all the time. An alternative for me needs to be super portable, lightweight, rugged, superior resolution (not necessarily 40mp with higher storage needs and processing requirements), excellent single battery life, AF and 4k video for crisp viewing. I like the idea of a good relatively inexpensive quality camera just to grab and go, without the worry of damage or theft, just to be available anytime. I'm also poor and always looking for a deal. Thanks!
I am still very keen on my NEX-6 for being small and for containing creative apps. It makes my a6700 feel bulky. The issue is the NEX's compatibility with latest "cheap" lenses. I bought a TTArtisan 27mm/F2.8 to pair the two to make an almost pocketable set. Two problems with the lens on this camera. One, it refuses to do continuous autofocus. Second, no Lightroom profile for the Sony version of the lens, only a Fuji one is there. In other words, or words of warning, the latest lenses may not be compatible with semi-vintage cameras. TTArtisan in their reply give me no hope regarding the autofocus issue.
i had the bigger version of this, the Sony a5100 my first jump to Sony from Canon. your review was my thought process when i made the big leap when i came across Classic lenses. come to think of now, i owned the a5100 more than 4 or 5 yrs and i cant let it go having A7ii and a Canon 7D this little camera is my go to camera for all around photography paired with Old classic glass that I own, my Super Takumar 50/1.4 and Canon FD 24/ 2.8 is what i use all the time if i need i a quick focus i just put on the kit lens. great combo...
keep going with these type of videos, expecially the lenses ones, i cannot describe how useful videos like this are, you always have an eye on budget options and performance per dollar ratio, while the other creators just assume we all have deep pockets, they just take that for granted its laughable
What would be the best combo, lens and camera, for vlogging VIDEO, not photos, from your desk like in this video you are in for the least price and reasonable quality for a RUclips channel?
i think for video today action cams make more sense, because people tend to film for longer time than what it takes to make a photo, so the arm gets tired holding a camera to record, so for phto is good enough.and so you can be recording with an action camera and taking photografs with both hands free.but yeah, todays if it can t record in 4k and if it doesnt have amic entry and isnt type C , it be incomplete and thats very bad already.
Sure is cheap, but add a few $$ and go for a5100. After research on facilities and prices, invested £356 in A6000 with PZ 16-50mm. 30 days to try and compare with current kit. Tempted by the Brightin Star f/0.95.
Heres a question for you: I currently have a Sony a7iv that I use mainly for video. I wanted a new camera for photography mainly and I love the aesthetic of the film simulations. which cam should I be looking at any recs??
Thank you, a great video on not getting caught up in all the bells and whistles. Question for you... Where does the iPhone etc fit in taking pictures and why would someone want something like the A5000 or similar? My question is one of who doesn't want to become a professional, but still take some great shots or is the phone of today all we need??? I don't think so, but I get lost in all the info!!! Thank you!
Hello i just bought a Sony alpha 5000 for 120€, i will use the camera 90% for product photography, wich lens would you reccomand ? Thank you, Gianluigi
I've been saying it for years, if you don't care about the focusing system or video the improvements in image quality in the last 10 years are minimal. It's nice to hear someone else say it too! Give me another 2 more stops of dynamic range, Now that's something I think would be a huge improvement and worth it.
Could I ask you if you would recommend this camera instead of a Sony rx10 iv if all I do is shoot my daughter in gymnastics? Thank you look forward to your suggestion
I went cheap when I had my Canon EOS 400d, (Rebel XT in the US) and got the cheap Canon 50mm f/1.8 - what a great portrait lens that is for the price. That it's plastic and the AF is noisy and slow doesn't matter.
I've had designer pieces and knockoffs of kislux . I ultimately prefer the knockoffs because I'm not worried about scratching it, preserving it, or someone stealing it.
Like others here, I have this great little sony. I'm currently exploring vintage canon lenses on it using an adapter and that is a lot of fun, and very interesting. It is my pocket camera, and still comes with me when I am using my Sony a7 (also exploring vintage lenses - both canon and Nikon). Thanks for this great video on a great quality budget camera.
Hey Mark! I’ve been a longtime fan of yours. I was wondering what you think the best lens for cinematic video would be for the Canon m50. I’m looking to invest in a cinematic lens for film in the $1000 or less range. I’m also looking for a lens that would be a good “one size fits all,” meaning that it would be a good main lens that could stand alone in my small collection. Thanks!
Im looking for a camera with three specific features.. an interchangeable lens, Mirrorless, and DIRT cheap (Probably more important than being mirrorless).. Currently looking at a Nikon J1.
So I'm really just getting started researching cameras and lenses and am hopeful you could clarify something for me. If I were to buy this set up (using the first lens you talked about) how "great" are the photos as is? I am not tech savvy when it comes to things like editing photos. Will the pictures taken look as they do in this video? I want something cheap and small for our travels that I can easily transfer to my phone or Mac, but not if I need to do editing for them to appear this beautiful. Thanks(:
Are you saying that unless we buy an extra lense it isn't good to take pictures? I have no idea how to put a lense on. I need to take pictures for ebay. I had a pixpro fz53.
Last year I had this exact camera and the a6000. One thing that the a5000 beats the a6000 is in the grip. I LOVED how the a5000 felt in my hands, something I did not felt while holding the other one. In every other aspect the a6000 is the superior camera. The a5000 is truly compact, with a pancake lens you are having a mini Ricoh. The problem with it is the lack of buttons and dials to change settings. I did configured it in a way to quickly access the menu and switched between Av and Tv. I even took both the a6000 and the a5000 to cover for a kids birthday party as requested by a friend. Sucked at night time but I got the 28-70mm zoom on the a6000 and the 50 1.8 on the a5000 and still got great pics with them when light was still around.
Fantastic Video, just about to replace my A6000 and is wanderings which camera I should get as replacement! Since the sensors are just about the same, I simply go with the most budget friendly. Video & frames per second are not huge factors for my basic use!
Don't do it! Keep your a6000. I sold mine and regretted it. Ended up buying another one. If it was weather resistant, it would be the perfect apsc pocket camera.
you can go also with nikon 3000-3500 seri ,,some are about the same price , i buy my 3200 new abaut 10 years a go to shoot video , and still use them , and you have the vast nikon lents avalable to you ,
I recently picked up a used NEX-6 as my first camera. I didn't time the market at all because I was anxious to get hands on and start trying to learn how to use it! I paired it with the Sony PZ 16-50mm. A week in and I am already thinking I need a different lens!!
Some good ideas for a basic apsc Sony E mount system. I'm still using A mount but looking to go to E mount eventually if my micro four thirds system doesn't work out for some reason. Micro four thirds is probably the best affordable alternative to the the Sony apsc E mount system.
and that's why i still own a canon 5d mark ii and refuse to switch to an rf mount camera and lens just yet. i dont shoot much digital currently so it is my camera for scanning negatives.
I'm a newbie and bought this didn't know it didn't have any stabilization and viewfinder couple other things I need especially stabilization and then I find out you can buy lenses for stabilization and they're higher than the camera
With no EVF, with my ageing eyesight I'd need a bright rear display. I rejected the RX 100 because its tiny size made it too difficult to handle. But I love this camera's simplicity. Any alternative recommendations?
If you can live without the EVF (I'm not sure I could necessarily) the a5000-series is the hidden gen that many people do pass up and is still very usable today. Yes it is now based on 10-11 year old sensor tech (maybe even older than that) but it does use the mostly the same stuff as the original a6000, which was a highly regarded camera as being very good overall at the time.
Get the Sony a3000 mirrorless dslr styled body that has an electronic viewfinder. Not the best lcd or viewfinder but it operates just like the a5000 and came out the same time.
I’ve been using my a5000 for the last 8 years (3 years in high school and 5 yrs in architecture school) I’ve been shooting grad photos to make some extra money and it still does more than the job. Its not the gear, it’s what you know (although I would love to be able to shoot 60fps😅)
Idk shit about photography, but I like taking photos. What does focus peaking and exposure bracketing mean?
Thanks for sharing!

@@sweetphilly2 dont worry about the technicalities and keep taking photos :)

Damn that’s a better deal than what you get today wtf 😂😂😂
My first Sony e-mount was the a5100 and it captured some incredible shots for my travel photography series. Mt. Rainer, St. Helen, Banff and the list goes on. I recently just pulled it out and dubbed it the ‘Dad Cam’ small enough for us to use when we travel and want to capture the kids on our travels!
Hi what lens did you use for travel
@@jameshunt6655 Sony 18-105mm f/4 and Sony 55-210 f/4.5-6.3
the a5100 is a big step forward. i got one last September brand new in a sealed box with one-year warranty for 11,000THB (313USD at that time). perfect for experimenting with CCTV lenses like the Fujian 35mm 1.4 and all the fantastic manual lenses by Brightin Star, Risespray, 7Artisans, TTartisan...
edit: the focus peaking comes in very handy in absence of the viewfinder.
Focus peaking is unusable in daylight.
@@Ezrabastian hmmm, not sure what you mean. mine works fine in daylight. blue-sky-zenith daylight.

Agree, these early NEX or a6000 are incredible. Better to spend money on lenses or education on how to use.

The older NEX series cameras were amazing as well. I look back at photos I took with my NEX 5R back 7+ years ago and the quality and detail is surprisingly good, even by today's standards.
Yep! It’s still better than phones (12 mp) and the nex c3 is (16 mp)

Hi its not $100 for one.
I got one for $93 on eBay
Gotta keep looking for one for 200 with a lens and some other stuff
It was until content creators start talking about it. The Fuji X100v used to be $1,349 when it came out…look what happened.
used Sony cameras are quite expensive (for a used camera) in recent years with the vintage lens+adapter boom ... it's almost impossible to find a 10 years old NEX series for less than 150-200 dollars

I cant express how much you are helping me out

I sill have mine, so many good memories with my NEX F3 🥰
I don't know about the a5000, but the a5100 actually has really nice 1080p video (nicer than the 1080p video that later a6300 and a6500 bodies have). However, the a5100 overheats in about 10 minutes in a 75-degree day. The a6000 also has nice 1080p video, despite not having picture profiles, since it only has creative styles.
I use mine as a web camera and record video using QuickTime.
might be true that the sensors have not changed in terms of size, but there are many other changes like higher video resolutions, faster sensor readings, better/faster focus, more focus points, higher resolutions(but can also mean highger noise because of smaller pixels) and better software whigh can result in less noise, ...
The a5100 is the real gem. I own 5 of them for streaming, they are amazing.
I was just wondering how they'd work for video. So you're happy with them then. Good to know
Does it overheat?

Two cameras and three lenses all totaled was less than $1000
Recently took the 6300 and the 27mm out for a Sunday afternoon at an outdoor pop up market.
The only issue i have with the camera is the battery life but
The camera worked fine hooked up to a small power bank which fit easily in my back pocket 😁.
I also own a Nikon Z6ii which i absolutely love but the size and weight of the Sony makes street photography blast.
I still regularly use my Sony NEX-5t. Such a great little camera!
100% agree! I purchased one over 10years ago and just recently upgraded to the a6700
I own an A7iv but I still bought the Canon 5D, Nikon D700 and Fuji X-T1 for the character of the older cameras....its amazing what those old cameras were capable of from a purely image quality perspective

Mark Wiemels Hi Mark
I have been out with my a5000 today taking test shots with a vintage lens for a video I am doing, I have had mine for about 4 years.
Loved this camera, just got rid of it early this year. The LCD sucked, but i put my 24mm GM and 85mm 1.8 and picture quality was amazing.
I still use my Sony nex 3n for photos sometimes although the canon m50 beats it at indoor mixed light/ natural light photography as the Sony photos need a lot of color correction they quickly turn out too dark and too blue indoors
NEX 3N definitely underrated.
Thanks for the video, Mark. I have the NEX-6 and the a6000. For what I do that is more than sufficient. But I have like 20 lenses. 😅
Got a Alpha 5000 with the kit lens for 140€. Great little setup for the price. Or a cheap backup for your main Sony Alpha Camera.
The diferrence between both is the price 250 vs 100 i think is worth it
I have one a5000 since like 2016 and for what I do I don't need another camera, the most important are the lens and lighting
everything I use, except my action cameras, are from 2010 to 2016 and I love how they all look.
Is this a good place/time to mention I have an NEX7 and A6000 for sale? 😇

TTArtisan in their reply give me no hope regarding the autofocus issue.

what about if i am using nex-c3, is it better to find a good third party cheap lens? any recommendations for AF?
keep going with these type of videos, expecially the lenses ones, i cannot describe how useful videos like this are, you always have an eye on budget options and performance per dollar ratio, while the other creators just assume we all have deep pockets, they just take that for granted its laughable
What would be the best combo, lens and camera, for vlogging VIDEO, not photos, from your desk like in this video you are in for the least price and reasonable quality for a RUclips channel?
What would be a good but cheap macro lens for the Sony body?
i think for video today action cams make more sense, because people tend to film for longer time than what it takes to make a photo, so the arm gets tired holding a camera to record, so for phto is good enough.and so you can be recording with an action camera and taking photografs with both hands free.but yeah, todays if it can t record in 4k and if it doesnt have amic entry and isnt type C , it be incomplete and thats very bad already.
Sure is cheap, but add a few $$ and go for a5100. After research on facilities and prices, invested £356 in A6000 with PZ 16-50mm. 30 days to try and compare with current kit. Tempted by the Brightin Star f/0.95.

I've been saying it for years, if you don't care about the focusing system or video the improvements in image quality in the last 10 years are minimal. It's nice to hear someone else say it too! Give me another 2 more stops of dynamic range, Now that's something I think would be a huge improvement and worth it.
Could I ask you if you would recommend this camera instead of a Sony rx10 iv if all

And between this camera and the NEX series, are there notable differences that could be decisive when choosing one?
In general, probably not.
Why everytime some RUclipsr talks about a cheap camera, it increases 10x their value in the next minutes?
I went cheap when I had my Canon EOS 400d, (Rebel XT in the US) and got the cheap Canon 50mm f/1.8 - what a great portrait lens that is for the price. That it's plastic and the AF is noisy and slow doesn't matter.
I've had designer pieces and knockoffs of kislux . I ultimately prefer the knockoffs because I'm not worried about scratching it, preserving it, or someone stealing it.

Are you saying that unless we buy an extra lense it isn't good to take pictures? I have no idea how to put a lense on. I need to take pictures for ebay. I had a pixpro fz53.
Wonder how much theyre going for in camera stores or 2nd hand in Tokyo
True, I have a A5100 since 2016 and it's a wonder. Most compact APS-C ever.
Just picked up a nex-3 off eBay for $70 bucks last week should be here on Wednesday. Can't wait to play with it
Fantastic Video, just about to replace my A6000 and is wanderings which camera I should get as replacement! Since the sensors are just about the same, I simply go with the most budget friendly. Video & frames per second are not huge factors for my basic use!
Don't do it! Keep your a6000. I sold mine and regretted it. Ended up buying another one. If it was weather resistant, it would be the perfect apsc pocket camera.
you can go also with nikon 3000-3500 seri ,,some are about the same price , i buy my 3200 new abaut 10 years a go to shoot video , and still use them , and you have the vast nikon lents avalable to you ,
Agree with assessment, getting great shots for the a5100 and have more money in pocket for better lenses.
I recently picked up a used NEX-6 as my first camera. I didn't time the market at all because I was anxious to get hands on and start trying to learn how to use it! I paired it with the Sony PZ 16-50mm. A week in and I am already thinking I need a different lens!!
I love when I find a RUclipsr talking about a cheap camera..just looked on ebay, US $231 still getting bids.
what about for shooting videos?
Some good ideas for a basic apsc Sony E mount system. I'm still using A mount but looking to go to E mount eventually if my micro four thirds system doesn't work out for some reason. Micro four thirds is probably the best affordable alternative to the the Sony apsc E mount system.
Grab an LAEA5
can i use this camera and lens for Astrophotography???
Please recommend for beginners
Yes, it has bulb mode.
and that's why i still own a canon 5d mark ii and refuse to switch to an rf mount camera and lens just yet. i dont shoot much digital currently so it is my camera for scanning negatives.
Glad I checked out this video - that 4L bag looks like just what I've needed and at a good price.
I use it nearly every day now, it's really good.
I'm a newbie and bought this didn't know it didn't have any stabilization and viewfinder couple other things I need especially stabilization and then I find out you can buy lenses for stabilization and they're higher than the camera
Briliant little camera. I have 4 of them and use them for time-lapse. No worry about leaving it unattended as I would be with an over £2k camera
With no EVF, with my ageing eyesight I'd need a bright rear display. I rejected the RX 100 because its tiny size made it too difficult to handle. But I love this camera's simplicity. Any alternative recommendations?
Sony a3000
If you can live without the EVF (I'm not sure I could necessarily) the a5000-series is the hidden gen that many people do pass up and is still very usable today.
Not the best lcd or viewfinder but it operates just like the a5000 and came out the same time.
great video, I am thinking of testing the waters of the Sony system, is there any good adaptors to attach Canon EF lenses?
Try metabones. Not cheap though.
Yes, video on my channel about it.
I’ve been using my a5000 for the last 8 years (3 years in high school and 5 yrs in architecture school) I’ve been shooting grad photos to make some extra money and it still does more than the job. Its not the gear, it’s what you know (although I would love to be able to shoot 60fps😅)
