One of the most detailed and comprehensive videos that doesn’t run 20+ minutes full of fluff. Appreciate you showing us the airbag release spring, that’s one of the most frustrating steps and it’s nice to have a visual of where that spring release is.
Happy to help!
One of the coolest things you can do. The older wheel looks completely outdated! Awesome install
Thank you! I love the upgrade
Looks 90's steering wheel 😂
On the old wheel you have indications when the SPORT or SPORT+ modus are enable. This option is gone with this new wheel. And the old sport Wheel is very cool with the aluminium paddles. But why not. Thx for explain the procedure.
Hope this helped
I just updated my stock 911 wheel to a racing wheel with flat bottom and racing stripe at 12:00 - can't wait to get back out to AX and Laguna Seca!
I bet you it looks amazing. Nicely done!!
Your video helped me replace my steering wheel. It was only difficult removing the airbag. I replaced my alcantara with yellow stitching with a new one. Thanks
Glad this helped!
That's really cool. I love the newer style wheel. I had the same one in the 718 Cayman. I did a similar thing in an old BMW. Great educational video on how to do it.
Thanks!!
I own a 2015 981 GTS. Following your video, I did exactly the same swap. First, thanks for the video. It was very helpful and an excellent guide on how to do the swap correctly. Thanks for the torque settings. Finally, I agree with the impact that a new steering wheel can make. Personally, the new wheel looks better but it also creates a feel of more space. I know this sounds silly, but every time I sit in my car, I get this feeling. Lastly, my old sport design wheel was ALCANTARA. I only drove with gloves and protected the suede as much as possible. However, at the end of the day, ALCANTARA does not wear well, for touchpoints with the hand. The new Napa leather feels better and stays like new.......
Welcome to the great wheel club! Happy I was able to help.
Thank you again.....@@TommyLGarage
Hey there! Can either of you help me decide on what steering wheel would be better in terms of reach (the adjustment in the steering column is not enoug)h) I would have installed a spacer behind the stock but that would take the stalks too far back, so i figured maybe one of these upgraded wheels might do the trick. If there is any difference, which one comes slightly closer to the driver? Thanks!
I had the sport design steering wheel (BEFORE picture) and upgraded to the new wheel (AFTER). In my humble opinion, the reach to the rim is actually quite the same by unadjusted steering column. What is different is the airbag location. In the 981 sport steering wheel (BEFORE picture), the airbag is actually closer to you as it "comes out" and sits before the rim. In the new wheel, the airbag is lower and sits slightly behind the rim. This creates a feel of more space when sitting behind the steering wheel. I love the new wheel. Prior the exchange, I thought that the old sport design wheel is as good as it gets, but since I switched to the new wheel, I actually like it much better and consider it a great upgrade. I hope this helps a little in your decision making process.@@popescugeorge9961
Awesome install and easy explanation. I love all of your videos. I learn all the time with you!👍
Thanks for the kind words!!
I've been watching other people do the similar swaps and I think they said you should reapply thread lock on the small cap screw before screwing on the new steering wheel. The old blue thread lock is considered one time use.
Thanks for the tip. Good advice.
I don’t know you but from your knowledge and experience you looks like an engineer
....close but no cigar :)
Great video, discovered your channel a couple weeks ago and i’m going through a binge of watching all your videos now
Thanks! Hope you enjoy!
When i asked you a few months ago you weren’t sure if you’re gonna do it :) it definitely looks way better!
I am a flip flopper lol
Awesome video! Where can I buy that steering wheel? I can can only find the ones with buttons.
Thank you! eBay is where I sourced mine
@@TommyLGarage thanks!
Would you happen to have the part number at hand? I’ve been looking for a couple of days and I cannot find one like yours.
@tommy L Garage Would you happen to know the product code for the steering wheel?
Ummm... the steering wheel bolt is called for by Porsche as a one-time use. That is likely because of the thread-lock that comes on the bolt being damaged with R&R. At the very least some blue LocTite should be used when it's reinstalled if you decide not to replace it. I don't recall exactly what the bolt costs, but it's not very much in the grand scheme of things Porsche.
Great point. I'll be doing it again soon and will use a thread lock
Porsche makes the best steering wheels the steering wheel replacement just gives your car a new feel . And look
Agreed.
This is one of the best DYI videos. Thanks so much. Can I apply the same on 991.1 carrera ? No sports chrono.
Hello. Yes 991.1 will be absolutely the same.
Thanks for the kind words!
Tommy
That’s awesome, I want to swap out my S wheel too but mines PDK & Multi function so I’ve got much more going on 🥴
But it’s the same procedure. You’ll be fine!
Looks amazing! Would you mind sharing the part number for that wheel?
It’s just an oem 991.2 steering wheel
@@TommyLGarage There are a few 992.1 steering wheel models and yours (with the perforated leather) is so beautiful. Would you have the part number specific to this perforated leather version? Many thanks!
@@MK2VRsick so I purchased mine on eBay and it’s an aftermarket wrap. That’s not OEM so there would not be a part number. I suggest you go on eBay and search for steering wheels and you’ll always find the one that fits. Also, you can email sellers because a lot of times they can custom make you whatever you want for pretty much the same price.
@@TommyLGarage Wonderful, thanks!
Hi Tommy. Great video, super easy to swap. I did the same thing on my 991.1 4S with a 991.2 GT wheel. Problem is my airbag light won’t go off. I tried two different wiring harnesses and two different airbags for the new wheel. Same issue. I have a manual gearbox, no heat nor MF, juts airbags. Not sure what else to try to get the light off. Any ideas?
Did you disconnect the battery when doing this work ?
Does it make a difference? I want to try this but don't want an error code. A person on Rennlist has a reoccuring fault and I want to avoid that at all costs. @@TommyLGarage
Thanks a lot for video! Would it be possible to have the buttons on the latest steering wheel to be usable?
Yes the buttons can be made to work too
Great video! Very informative. Does this also work for the PDK if you get a new wheel with the paddles?
Yes it works exactly the same!
Great video! Is there a part number that you can provide for the new steering wheel? Thank you
is the wheel an aftermarker wrap? I have been looking for a similar wheel and the ones I find are sold leather
What is the main reason for disconnecting the battery? Wouldn’t disconnecting your battery lose settings and preset informations? BTW thanks for the great video
Any residual current flowing to the airbag when messing around with the connection could be pretty dangerous and cause it to set off.
You don’t want the airbag blowing up in your face while disconnecting
Great information
Do you know the procedure if your 981 has controls on the steering - electronics procedure
Hey. They procedure is identical. Just find the wheel with buttons.
Just installed mine step by step with this video. Thank you sir!
Glad it helped! Which wheel did you go with?
Thank you so much for your video! Always enjoying your videos! I have one question about installation of steering-wheel. Does yellow(and orange) socket comes with the new steering-wheel? Or you took off original pieces from your original steering wheel to new one?
Thank you
Thanks! Yes they do come with the new wheel
@@TommyLGarage Thank you for your reply :)
Could you advise on the peddle shifters ?? Ik thats yours a manual. But it would be really nice if I could get them working. I have one of those weird tiptronic shifters in the old steering. Could you please advise.
I’m sorry I don’t know much about that
@@TommyLGarage its literally plug and play. I did it to my cayman s 2007 new paddle shifter working absolutely fine. Just connect the module + make sure when you are buying the steering wheel tell the supplier about which car you are gonna put it in ( i think they put the same module that supports your car but maybe its the same for all Porsches) . I ordered it off alibaba real shaddy shit but the steering quality is pretty good and had no issues going in along with the airbag no air bag light or anything . And i got it for 700$ approx with airbag. Just leaving this comment here so if anyone’s trying to do it might just help them. Anyways thanks bro your video was very helpful.
Quick question.
Does the honk works? Thinking of doing the same.
Great information.
Yes it does!
Great video.. where do you get the steering wheel from. Can you share the link?
thank you
eBay works best
I love this. This is something I might consider. For me it’s a deal breaker between the 2015 and 16
Do it! It’s an amazing mod
@@TommyLGarage yeah depends on what will be on the market when I buy.
@@maris2353 a lot cheaper to also get rear taillights and both bumpers than buy a 16, especially if you consider older ones too. I prefer the facelift look a lot, not a fan of how similar they made the 991 to the 997, 992 is completely different
@@Brian-jv8iy thanks
Sorry did I miss the torque specs in the comments? Getting ready to do this mod myself along with the 9 products extension
I would say, just taking it as tight as you think makes sense. There are various torque specs floating around online, so I just don’t want to quote the wrong number.
@@TommyLGarage understood I’ll ask my shop for their input as well. For now I’ll give the ol’ German spec “good ‘n’ tight”
Looking to do that with my 2014 cayenne, where do you recommend getting the full steering wheel?
eBay is your friend
What happens if the hole to puncture the airbag is empty, meaning I just have a hole there?
Impossible. Get in deep there the hook is there.
Such a difference. It looks heaps better.
Thanks. I agree.
bach always adds a little class to a video. and no copyright issues either!
I agree !!
FYI this is called a 982 steering wheel, great vid
Thanks also 991.2
If I have the oldest 991.1 steering wheel with multifunction controls , it is easier to swap the 991.2 steering wheel (with multi function controls)? Just pug and play or I need an adapter?
Yes from what I heard. You may need to also swap the clock spring but it’s easy.
I think the SportDesign is one of the most iconic steering wheels out there. Wouldn’t change it!
The new one is so amazing
You still have the sportdesign? Or did you already sell it?
Its like you are inside of my brain and giving me more reason to continue spending money. Great job! Is the 991.2 steering wheel the same as the 981 gt4 wheel? and same with the 718? Keep up the great work!
Haha sorry! And yes 991.2 and macan are the same. Gt4 is slightly smaller similar to GT3
Thanks Tommy. How much does it cost if you don’t mind 😊.
It was about $700 for the wheel and $400 for the airbag. All on eBay.
is it possible to do this steering wheel retrofit in an older cayenne? or does this only work in specific porsche models. thanks!
Yes it’s possible. This one would fit. Might need a different clockspring
7:22 Omg dude ahah, you're such a funny guy, nice job! I really like the video and now I can buy a older Cayman and still enjoy the nice view of a newer steering wheel
Or buy mine as it is currently for sale
So I removed and reinstalled my steering wheel per your excellent instructions. When I pushed the airbag/horn back into place, I was surprised that it stuck in too far. It’s now sunk into the steering wheel and when I start the car, the horn is stuck on. Any advice? I planned to drive it with the hopes some good bumps would make it pop back out, but the loud horn killed that plan. Lol!
Yes loosen up the screws that are holding the metal brace to which the airbag snaps in.
@@TommyLGarage Thanks Tommy. That helped!
@@mitchlewis535 I had a typo in there. But I think you get the idea ha ha.
@@TommyLGarage Yes, I knew what you meant. I also added some Krytox grease to the spots where it touches and made sure the ABS wire went down it's trough. Works great now! Thank you!
I have the same older sport wheel in my cayenne. So can I swap to this new wheel w/o any added module/coding? Is it really just new wheel and airbag?
Yes that’s it. As long as there are no buttons
@@TommyLGarage thanks. I do have the paddles. Do you know if I need anything else for that to make it work in the swap?
@@nickg8985 as far as I know it should work fine
Where can I find a list of Porsche steering wheels that fit for the 987.1?
eBay
Tommy! You're the greatest. I love you man!!!❤❤❤
Hope this helped!!!
Where did you purchase the steering wheel and rough cost?
$700 ebay
Hey, great video like always, I have also a 981 cayman S and I was thinking to do the same but Porsche told me that I can have a problem with the airbag light, in case. Did you have any of these problems? If yes, how did you resolve it?
Zero issues with airbag light. You’ll be fine.
I have an airbag light, did you ever encounter the same?
@@RobertS-eq9yndid you get this light resolved? I have the same issue?
Hey man - I have the 997.2 (no multifunction) wheel and purchased a 992 wheel with airbag (with multifunction)
Which module would I require and what is the adaptor for? Or is that the same thing as the adaptor?
If I install without module I just assume the mf won’t work but the wheel will fit as standard right? Thanks
It will work but buttons will not
@@TommyLGarage the car is a 991.1. But in any case can I remove the buttons once I take the 992 wheel apart?
Thanks for your reply
Hey! Can you do this on a 2015/991.1 turbo ?
Yes
I want to do this to my 987.2 but I'm wondering if that style wheel will fit my car
It should fit. It’s very universal.
Hi Tommy, I enjoy your videos. I'm getting ready to swap my alcantara wheel for a leather one. I found a wheel out of a 2016 GT4 which is manual. Do you know if the paddle shifters from my 2021 Cayman wheel will be a direct bolt on to the 2016 wheel? I'd appreciate any help or insight you can provide.
Cheers,
Ed
Yes they’ll fit but you’ll have to swap the plastics over too
Do you recall where you ordered the steering wheel?
eBay
Great video! Do you fully disconnect the battery first?
Thanks. And yes I do
Hi, Awesome install. Would you please supply a link where you found your steering wheel?
Thanks. I found it on eBay
did you have to code the new Airbag in or was it all plug and play? What other wheels fit? This wheel only fit the 981 or will the Panamera, cayenne and such fit as well? Trying to open up my possibilities of finding a better deal on a wheel.
This will fit most Porsche cars post 2009+. No coding needed.
Can I do this on a 2007 Porsche cayman?
Great video. I believe the cost to go to a newer wheel is more because you need the airbag to fit the new wheel. If you just swamped the wheel but kept the airbag, the cost would have been cheaper for this conversion - am I correct?
Correct but the old airbag won’t fit
Great tutorial thanks! I hope to do this with an Alcantara wheel some day.
It will be an easy swap!
Great video. I’ve been thinking about doing this with my 981 Cayman S, I love the sport design wheel but it does date the interior I think. Your video is very helpful! 👍🏻 subscribed!
Thanks!!! Welcome to the family
@@TommyLGarage Hi, I’ve watched this video a few times, have bought a lovely 718 wheel and couldn’t find the right airbag so have spoken to Porsche. They can supply the airbag but have said that they can’t endorse the swap and also that it will all work as a chip in the wheel itself needs to be programmed to the car... did you have to do this or have you had any issues, or error codes thrown up? Thanks!
I really want to change it, too -:)
Please tell me the part number of the new steering wheel
It’s any number from a 991.2 car
Do you have a part number or link for the perforated leather wheel you found?
I will be selling mine in a few weeks; feel free to email me
Hey Tommy do you mind sharing how much the wheel and airbag cost? Looking around now and it looks to be about 2-2.5k all in for both?
If we are talking dollars That’s pretty expensive. I got mine for about 40% of it. But do keep in mind its not original its aftermarket. It feels pretty good. Lets see how it holds up over time.
Wheel:$600 and airbag $300
@@TommyLGaragehi Tommy, might I ask where I can get it in the US😊
I didn't even know this was possible
Thankyou sir
Happy to help!
Would this work with the newest steering wheel too
Yes should be identical
Hi do you have the link to where you got the new steering wheel?
I got it on eBay
It must be done. Good job.
Thanks! And I agree
Hey guys, what about availability of high octane fuel 'out in the nowhere' across the US? I want to ship my car over for a coast to coast... are any of the car supply chains carrying Liqui Moly octane booster on their shelves? Unfortunately, one is not allowed to stack the trunk up with anything when importing a car.
91 is always available from my experience
@@TommyLGarage Is that your weird PON rating? That is not high enough for the 981 engine... at least the GTS requires 98 RON per the manual and the S cannot be far off, actually guessing it is the same. The manual says you can run 95 RON, but I like to think that I could hear a slight knock at higher revs, so I started juicing things up with booster in the countryside.
Thanks my new wheel will be here this week!
You’ll love it!
Do you have a link to your steering wheel and air bag?
It was found on eBay
Looks good and modern.
Thanks. I agree
What are the torque specs in newton-meters?
“Tight enough” :)
Great upgrade ! Where did you get the stering wheel?
eBay
How much is that new steering wheel cost ?
Around $800
I figured your new wheel would be smaller, the 718 wheels feel better so that be my motivation for changing it. Is this one definitely the same diameter?
Yes same diameter. A true GT3 wheel is slightly smaller
Can you swap the 957 cayenne steering wheel for one of these ??
From what I understand yes.
Is that a Gopro mount?
Good eye!
These are the lit situations for the drops to
:)
Great video Tommy
Well thank you sir
do you have any interest in selling your old wheel? Do you feel the upgrade was worth the $2k+ price tag?
Sold the old wheel. And yes upgrade was wort it!
Will it work if the car is a 991.1 PDK?
Yes it will
@@TommyLGarage Thank you 🙏
Can’t believe how easy it is.
Super easy
This does so much to look and feel of 971
Agreed
It changed so cool
Thanks!
does the launch control work well?
No launch control in a manual
@@TommyLGaragemy car also changed steering wheel, but launch ctrl not work, I have to go dealer to programming
Looks great! I’ve got a 981 Boxster S with the ugly stock steering wheel, so let me know if you’d like to sell me your old wheel.
Already sold sorry
@@TommyLGarage no worries- thanks!
To be honest, both steering wheels looked good. Congrats though.
Fair enough! Thanks!
What is the spec'd torque?
I just done this but horn goes off randomly. Exact same steering wheel
Make sure the plugs are tight and make sure the inner metal piece is not screwed in too tight (the one with the springs)
Seems it's quite sensitive. Slight nudge it goes off. Screws seem fine
Very nice Tommy, I just upgraded my steering wheel on M2C as well with perforated leather/alcantara combo...love it!
Perforated is the way to go!
Does this throw any codes that needs to be cleared?
Nope. Zero.
@@TommyLGarage awesome thanks! This is definitely on my upgrade list.
"You turn the steering wheel and the car turns." Profound comment.
Haha
Great video! Super useful and well edited 👌
Thank you!
As far as the middle section goes (the look of the air bag section) I prefer the older style. Everything else looks nicer on the new wheel
I see what you mean. The older design looks more classic
@@TommyLGarage - yeah 100%. Timeless
no need to program air bag with computer?
No; plug and play
looks nice but the new wheel doesn't have the indicators showing what drive mode the car is in, sport and sport+ oh and fyi on the hood you don't need to worry too much about closing it accidentally with the battery disconnected, there is an manual hood release, you have to take out the drivers side front wheel arch plastic and behind is an emergency pull cord to open it just in case the the actuator fails or if the battery goes dead.
Nice look
Thank you!!
Where did you buy the new wheel?
eBay
