Yes, but I think there's a few small differences in the global spec Suzuki Samurai and the India spec Gypsy, most probably the engine. Gypsy originally had a tiny 1.0L NA engine and then a 1.3L NA
The Jimny is wildly popular here in Australia, there's something like a two year waiting list for the 4th generation. In fact they’re so popular I wrote my car off into the back of one.
From the videos, the Samurai was actually very difficult to roll over despite numerous tries and being a tall offroad SUV.... what a shaddy company CR is...
They actually modified the course by shortening the distance between the cones and ran it 32 more times than the other vehicles they tested that day (Jeep Wrangler and Isuzu Rodeo). In the raw footage there's the voice of a Consumers Union VP demanding "You tip that car or I'll find someone who will!". I don't know of any other scandals that they were found to have taken part in, but that doesn't mean there aren't any. However, overall they are the exact opposite of shady. The idea of making a whole magazine based upon holding companies accountable for their products and claims by paying verified customers to submit feedback on products after a certain length of ownership is an _excellent_ idea that benefits everyone in our society. They gather and compile LOTS of feedback data from customers and sell "packages" of this data to the companies involved for them to use as a guide for how to improve the next iteration of their product(s). (I just realized I am actually thinking of the J.D. Power Survey, which is for vehicles specifically, but Consumer Reports operates under the same philosophy and goal of simply informing consumers and holding companies accountable to encourage meaningful improvements, so I still think that they should be seen as a force for good that simply might have had some bad apples, or temporary lapses of judgement due to external pressures of the time)
Luke Galt We have the Ford Bronco now, which will appeal to the American market more than the Jimny. The Jimny is pretty cool but it’s too small and weak for American consumers’ tastes.

In the previous gen Jimny you can easily swap the engine for a larger Suzuki Swift engine - it's the same family of engines (M13 and M16) and bolts on the original transmission, so it's easy-peasy - and you get 136hp for cheap in this bad boy, which is more than enough in such a small 4x4! Add to that the convertible chassis and you have the coolest little off-roader ever :)

I wouldn't recommend judging an entire company based on a single incident from decades ago that was only about a specific type of product. Overall, what they do is very good and helpful to us consumers. Gathering and processing consumer feedback at the national level in order to help people make informed purchasing decisions and to hold companies accountable for their claims, as well as encourage meaningful improvements, is unquestionably a service that is beneficial to everyone. However, considering what they did to the adorable Samurai, I think it's safe to take their reports with a grain of salt and simply compare their results with at least 1 or 2 other sources instead of relying on their word alone.
I’m in Toronto, this lady who goes to my local Church drives a Mint X90 in manual. She said it was her first ever car she bought back in the 90’s and would never trade it. She gets constantly approached by people and been pulled over by people in G-Wagons with Offers and she’s turned down all of them. Seeing a car like that being daily driven here in Canada is literally like finding a Unicorn. With all that harsh winters and Salt
In the UK, the Samurai(or Jimny as it’s called here) is seen as an incredibly competent off roader and was incredibly popular. Such a shame that a random guy with a grudge managed to kill it off in the states.

Daimler-Chrysler was "forced" to do a costly redesign the Jeep (widen the track) because of the same crap. Their fender flares are part of the result. I'm sure they had butt-hurt, and were no doubt in support of the anti-Sami propaganda.
@@norsefalconer , Who is going to add all of the safety equipment, like air bags, crumple zones, ABS/Stability Control etc? It is more than simply adding brake lights and turn signals. @@192lalo Yes but no, its not the government's job to protect international companies from competition from the market. Case in point the fact that after the lawsuit the government did not investigate nor punished Consumer Reports
Consumer Reports still does the same kind of thing. If every car was "good" people wouldn't buy their magazine. Fiat is the latest automotive casualty due to lack of Consumer Reports favor. They literally counted buyer's difficulty with pairing Bluetooth on the 500L as a "reliability" issue. They failed to recognize the one-year issues of transmission problems of the 500L (which mysteriously only affected US models with the exact same transmission as European models which seemed unaffected), did not continue into the second year of production and continued to lambast the later year models for perceived reliability issues that had been resolved after the first year. Many of their judgments are purely "opinion" but they pass them off as fact. For example, on the Fiat 500 summary, it says "this two-door suffers from a choppy ride and a noisy cabin, which detract from the fun." .... Ask any 500 owner, and the RIDE that CR is complaining about is the #1 SOURCE of its fun. It actually communicates road feel to you in a way most modern cars do not, which make it very engaging to drive. Yet Consumer Reports seems to think driving a sofa is more fun - therefore they downrate any vehicle that's not cushy in the way they like. Even their "death rates per million registered vehicles" is incredibly damaging to the industry. It shows larger vehicles as "safer", yet does not account for who the drivers of these vehicles are. Smaller vehicles like a Ford Fiesta or Chevy Sonic tend to be driven by younger less affluent buyers, who as a whole, are at MUCH higher risk of being involved in accidents. Compared to things like Chevrolet Suburbans, which are driven by people who tend to have many more years of experience driving and are less likely to be "hooning" around. When you look at actual crash safety data, Consumer Reports' claim that giant SUVs are nearly twice as safe dissolved into the lies they are.
Fun Fact: The 2019 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon got 1 Star at ANCAP and EURONCAP while the Jimny got 3 stars. And then the wrangler rolled over in the two crash test made by the IIHS. But CR says no word about it. And curiously CR did all this just a year later the Samurai outsell the wrangler 2 to 1... what a curious thing?
That's what they can do to car manufacturers. Imagine what they could do to green energy companies when they get to become big enough to outsell fossil fuels. Capitalism at it's finest.

I had a samurai. It was easy to service (for the basic stuff I did, anyway), since the engine compartment was so spacious. It was also quite competent off-road in the Arizona deserts. Of course, it also had bus-like steering, suspension, and acceleration (also mine had no a/c which was brutal in Phoenix). On the whole, it was a fun little vehicle.

Fun story: the first jeep was based on a compact truck built by a company called American Bantam. It was optioned by the US Army Quartermaster Corps for modification as a light transport carrier, and then they sent the plans to over a hundred car companies. Ford and Willys overland were the only ones that built one to compete for the contract. Henry Ford was basically trying to steal the truck and take over production for the war effort, and Ford was actually the company that invented the stamped slotted grill that became symbolic of jeeps. Willys was the third or fourth company to build a jeep, even checker, the cab company, put together three crate jeeps from bantam when bantam contracted with them to expand production capacity. Bantam was relegated to building jeep trailers after the army gave away their plans, willys overland died off when they were bought out by Kaiser after a decade of legal battle with bantam about the patents for the jeep, kaiser jeep died when chrysler bought them, and now it's all Fiat. Jeep is a lie.

@Coni Glione I think it was more a matter of the Consumer Reports people having a grudge against it, then getting stuck in a mindset of confirmation bias and wishing to make their own reality than find the actual truth. They set out to show that it was dangerous, and that's what they did, regardless of the truth. While the US auto industry has famously done a lot of crappy things to keep out foreign competitors, I don't get the sense, at least based on this video, that Jeep had any role in it this time. But if thinking of Jeep and other similar vehicles, if Consumer Reports were being fair they should have done the same over-the-top tests, performed exactly the same, with other vehicles and see if they too tipped when pushed that far.

Even the driver logs from their most seasoned driver said, "The Suzuki Samurai poses no significant safety risk and outperforms all vehicles tested today."

They have “Jeep eater” kits for the Samurai that make them absolute units
The suzuki was a 1986 model with a supercharger off a Mercedes C class Kompressor (DIY fitted, there is no kit for such a conversion), lifted suspension and some tyres, prepared and driven by 2 amateur mechanics and offroad drivers, with no support vehicles, no external sponsorships and financing.
So who is the underdog here?
@@thudtheace I never had a Bronco II, but remember when they came out. Even then I did not like them. They seemed to be a cheap plastic copy of the original (1965-1977), the vehicle nich they were meant to recapture. IMO, the biggest problem is Ford left out what made the original desirable. In hindsight the B2 should have been designed with a removable top and an interior that you would not fear getting rained on. That might have made the desirable even today. As is now, unlike 40 year old CJs, no one cares about saving them or rebuilding them.
I had a '96 Suzuki Sierra (Australian version of the Samurai) with a soft-top and the the coil spring suspension they later put under the Jimny. That thing was the most fun car I've ever owned. I recently bought a 1980s 'long-wheelbase' Sierra to make into a unique weapon.
Loved this thing. But I whenever I drove through a windy pass near me, I did worry as the little guy would flip. Never did though.
I was worried when I couldn't keep up with the flow of traffic... with passengers with me even worse!
S M I was worried whenever a a large semi passed me. It was so light that as it passed the samurai swayed. Scary, but I must stress nothing ever happened. It was a great vehicle for long road trips because it was amazing with gas. I took it Baja on the weekends. Perfect for that
I love the 80s and early 90s design of the samurai.
16:24 - The Suzuki Jimny is legal on NZ roads, has and still is allowed on the road. They are everywhere!
Maybe he was only referring to the first model launched here, otherwise if they weren't road legal, you wouldn't see so many on trademe eh?
@@NDFilmNZ Pretty sure every model was road legal in NZ. *shrug
Just from a quick look at the internet the Farmworker 4x4 was a rebadged Maruti Gipsy which couldn't be registered cause it failed crash safety standards.
@@nathansstuff1547 Yeah I think I see the article you are looking at, same one they took the image from for the video. Hes talking about British laws though not New Zealand. i've seen some of the early Suzuki for sale in NZ, but very rusty. There is still some very rough examples in Southland, one used daily between Queenstown and fiver rivers.
not the Farm Worker, those were sold quite recently in 2013 and were simply imported Maruti Gypsys
My mother (70+) bought the new jimny as soon as it was available, she love the car. She was driving the samurai for over 20 years and thought it was time for a new one. Just at the moment the new jimny was announced.

Everyday you walk out and try starting it and it doesnt... then you go out into your garage and get a fuse out of a bucket full of fuses
Americans: this 4×4 is unsafe because it rolled over once.
Also Americans: have vehicles driving around with 1200hp and 28 inch wheels.
Americans are all about liability and litigation. Cars that are sold must be "safe" or else the manufacturer will get sued and banned. But people can do whatever they want as now that's their own fault. It's not about keeping people safe, it's about avoiding blame and lawsuits.
1200 horsepower? What the fuck, are people driving around in P-51 Mustangs now?

@@quillmaurer6563 I rally doubt that the Jimny rolls over easily than American sold landyachts like the Tahoe and such.
This was the first car roll over I was involved in as a passenger. Mind you, my 'mate' was driving it like a skateboard completing an insane turn off a 45deg embankment. With me hanging in my seatbelt laying in glass, he didn't say are you ok, he said, well...... looks like I'm getting that Ford.....
2020 and a similar car- Maruti Suzuki Gypsy is still in active service for the Indian Army.
It's dead agile, light weight, easy to work on with low maintenance, has climbed the mountains of Himalayas, to cold deserts in Leh and total burning desert of Rajasthan. It has actually been very reliable too.
Sadly we never received the SWB versions.
This has to be one of my favorite episodes yet, I can’t wait to show everyone this video. So sick and tired of people telling me how samurais roll over, I’ve even tried to Roll mine and it’s really difficult🤣
Yeah, the worst thing is that other people get other vehicles confused with Jimny’s, I have a Subaru brumby, and 11 people have told me how unsafe it is and how easy to tip it is, yet I literally drove it on the side of a hill and floored it while turning and it just sucked itself down and wouldn’t even budge. I tried to roll it on the most tractioned ground I could and it just ripped up a huge track
Anyone saying a [insert vehicle with s in the name] is unsafe are really stuck in the wrong era of cars

Here in India, the Suzuki Samurai or "Gypsy"has a cult following! We got almost all the variants and had production till 2014. Sadly due to the new emission norms the production has been stopped. I had a 1987 Suzuki Samurai it was such a cool vehicle. Drove it across the desert in Nevada, I mean on dirt roads from Jean, NV to Pahrump, NV. Dirt roads the whole with 4 people in the car. It never left me stranded, easy to push start, easy to work on and never got stuck. Only traded it in after a Suzuki dealership messed with the carb and never ran right after that. It was awesome when the boys from Roadkill put a Mopar V8 in one and hauled ass in it.
