  • Volvo have finally entered the EV arena with the fully electric version of its compact SUV, the XC40. Whilst it shares a lot of its underpinnings with the excellent Polestar 2, it doesn't necessarily mean that it is going to be a winner in a class that is bursting with plenty of premium talent. In this week's episode, Bryan puts the little Volvo through its paces to find out if it has what it takes to be worthy of your consideration against other premium brands.

Really useful review, as ever, thanks. Test drove one today and, as Bryan correctly predicted, there are now many other significant contenders in this segment. The lack of graduated braking - it's freewheel or dodgem style only - is outmoded now. There are now no longer any lighter interior options for the headlining, pillars and dash which means that it feels quite dark inside. On our poor Cornish road surfaces there was quite a lot of drumming but I'm beginning to think that the lack of engine noise sensitises you to this. On poor roads it might be that playing music is almost a necessity to avoid irritation whereas in a diesel - even one as refined as our Q3 - some of the road noise is cancelled by the engine note. In my experience so far though, there is no such thing as a bad car - just a great choice of good ones. That's why we need Bryan!

Mine arrives in the next week-3 months, I’m hanging out. I get your ‘concerns’ re the noise, but remember, you normally have music playing, which will mute out 90%+ of the road noise.

Excellent review as ever. Agree largely with your good/bad points except the Google interface is fantastic with the best voice control for all the things you wanted buttons for... and this is by far the best OPD I have ever driven - very quickly adapted to. I have a "First Edition" on work Salary Sacrifice scheme that works out far more cost effective at £440pm including Insurance for 5 people. Now ... the really, really bad thing with this car is something you would not find on a test review ... the reversing light illumination .... in an unlit rural area you cannot see anything in the mirrors and the 360 camera view has a pic of he car surrounded by pitch black, even the reversing only camera view is unusable at night in an unlit area. So the sensors are a big help. I'm hoping to find a fix. Otherwise, by far the best car and software - considerably better and more reliable than my previous Jaguar. I hate the big "stuck on Tablet screens" of most others.

@@AutoEV Having now test driven the P2 now the XC40 eagerly awaiting the C40. Dealer reckons he will be getting a demo car in for the beginning of January. The Polestar for us was a little too tight in the front cockpit so by comparison the Volvo variant felt more open. Mind you the Lexus is on the horizon, I just hope it will offer a Lexus performance compared to the Toyota on which it is based.

How do you think this compares to the Q4? When the Q4 is optioned out similarly, the prices are just about equal. Obviously the XC40 is going to be a good bit quicker, but how do you think they compare in terms of quality, comfort, fun, etc.?

    • @AutoEV

Good question Mike. My preference is for the Volvo. It's a delight to drive, and whilst the Audi is very good, the Volvo is on a par in terms of build, is much more comfortable and, in my eyes, a classy looking piece of design. The Audi IS very good though, don't get me wrong, but at the same price, I'd go Volvo. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. We do appreciate the support. Bryan @ AutoEV

I tried both and went for the Q4. The XC40 is a really nice car but for me I needed more range and crucially more boot space. The Volvo is a lot quicker but as I need a family car it’s not really relevant to me - the Q4 is plenty fast enough. I do like the styling of the XC40 but for the same price (on my company scheme) the Q4 was a better choice. Both are great cars though.

I ended getting a XC40 yesterday simply due to the delivery time. I get my XC40 in June and the Q4 would be delivered in November at the earliest. We want to go electric now, tired of diesel costs (live in Sweden so very high taxation and fuel costs on ICE vehicles).
I do agree that the range is quite mediocre on the Volvo. We do however live in Stockholm so the furthest we'll be traveling (when I decide to go to the office) is 50km one way drive. And we charge at home over night.
In the summer we'll most likely go on a 400km one way trip, so stopping to charge for 45-60 min while the kids eat lunch isn't really that big of hassle.
Other than the delivery time, what really sold us on this car is the look and feel of driving it. It's also quite spacious in the backseat for being a compact SUV, which is great since we have big, bulky car seats for the kids.
But Volvo does need to improve the range if they truly want to become the new EV king 😉

Bottom of the A pillar and bonnet/door/ front wing line look half arsed. And you spotted it a couple of mins in. Also, where the body line kicks up at the back doors, ohh my eyes..

And the bonnet / wing gap, seen in the final scene grows from from small to wow -huge, moving towards the front of the car. Yikes, Volvo. Good video content though. Maybe just not film so close to mid-day as the bright sun caused some contrasty shadows. Love the green color, good choice.

I'd say the ride was slightly stiffer in the C40, but not harsh. The handling is roughly the same too.

There is a place here in Glasgow called "The Innovation" centre. It has opened to teach us about EV's and hybrids. I have been in and driven a few different cars of both types. I told them I was interested in trying this car Volvo xc40 EV. After watching this video I no longer want to drive this car. For years I felt Volvo was a boring bland brand. but recently they have upped their game, until now to bring out a car that parts of the body don't look like they fit is just crminal. The Polestar 2 is far superior to this.
