I'm a BMW dealer tech over in CA, great info here. I was surprised to hear the words "ISTA" and "ICOM" in the video, I figured those were dealer secretes! Really goes to show how dedicated and knowledgeable you are in the field. Awesome video as always.

You'll also need a 27mm socket for some late model b-series engines. If you don't want to shell out big bucks for a set of impact grade swivel sockets, start off with 16 and 18mm for doing suspension stuff. A 21mm swivel wouldn't hurt either. In addition to the chrome E10 swivel socket, a E12 would be beneficial as well. XL length ratcheting wrenches in 16, 18, 21mm for doing alignments is a must have.

I'm actually a full time technician at BMW-MINI here in Japan and we have tonnnns of special tools for those damn cars. The Mini Cooper is the most aggravating car I've ever had to work on, I swear there is no room at all!

Well you'd get used to it, here in OZ, I'm swimming in them. Timing chains done properly on those Generation 2 Peugeot engines, even have their own odd timing procedure. Space is enough if you removed the right components (ie engine mount on the right side) and get creative with those ratcheting spanners (attach a low profile stubby Snap-on 12 point 1/4" socket into a 11mm long ratcheting spanner, for the tensioner).

I think the tools mentioned are sort of exaggerated. At the dealer, most of the stuff you mentioned, I have never had to use.
I like the way you present your videos man, keep it up.
    1. Oil Filter tools, 27mm (Mini's and some diesels), 32mm (Current Mini's and 3, 4 Cylinder B engines), 36mm (Diesels and generation 1 BMW Mini), 74mm by 14 (very old M4x engines, some diesels and N57s), 86.5mm by 16 (Pretty much most petrols, even the N63 V8's). I prefer Hazet, but the new Blue-Point set also does a decent job or the Assenmacher set. I don't know where you got 24mm from.
    2. You can make a contraption on the E10 Torx socket, over in my country the socket goes for 100 bucks, a combination of 1/4" E10, universal and an extension will work fine. On the old N54 engine (Current engines are designed B series), plenum removal is technically just raising it a bit, takes me less than a minute to do as there isn't much fasteners or even stuck to the head, cordless impact to zip them bolts and nuts off. You will get enough space to remove it.
    3. Some tools you probably never thought of, a custom made 5mm long ball end hex bit socket (Snap on guy to order 5mm 1/4" allen and replace with a long hex ball socket that is from the 3/8" drive. For N53, N54, N55 high pressure fuel pumps, although you might be able to get a long 5mm power tool drive bit to work with a 1/4" bit ratchet.
    4. Most guys with enough strength will be able to remove the viscous fan of the old M5x engines with just a 32mm spanner.
A Blue-Point one just thin enough, position the open end on the nut and give it a wack with you hand clockwise and spin the fan off by the blade when loose enough. The pulley holder tool doesn't usually fit that well and the tool may break.
    5. ISTA-P is for programming old cars (E and older), not for diagnosis. For programming you need a Deutronic DBL1000 to maintain a steady supply of power for programming, although for diagnosis you should hook the car to a charger anyway.
ISTA-D is for diagnosis work and programming F cars.
    6. The only time I had to use a Tamperproof 5 point lobe is removing the airflow sensor on some very old models from the ducting, the thing is, the airflow sensor comes with the ducting, its usually faster just to order the sensor with the ducting (that makes removing the sensor with the tamperproof bit a bit redundant).
    7. The only tool I ever needed to reset a service light was a piece of wire for those Round plug diagnostic port equipped cars.
Pretty much all the cars can be reset by the odometer button hold procedure and its faster than connecting a diagnostic tool.
Its just slightly different for certain models. Either the odometer button by itself or with BC held down or BC used for reset.
    8. Triple square, yeah the only people at the dealer that has them accounts less than 10% of the people, you'd only use it on some models to remove the front wheel bearing assembly, that hardly ever happens. The Triple square purchase makes sense in VW group vehicles as they use it far from aggressively.
    9. 7mm and 8mm stubby hex bit socket in 3/8" drive, for them brake caliper guide bolts, never lube them since your not supposed to.
    10. Brake Bleeding spanners, best ones I've found to be useful are Gedore B11 series, 9mm and 11mm. Dirt cheap as well for the worse access ones. Or regular 9mm and 11mm reversible ratcheting spanners for a faster way if there is enough room.
    11. No to do brakes on electric park brakes, you do not need a diagnostic tool for workshop mode, the clockwise direction windback tool with the right adapter will work. Just release the park brake in the car before you do it by pressing down the button. wind it back clockwise and lever the piston the rest of the way till it bottoms out. Assemble everything, pump the pedal till its hard. Drive out, once the speedo reaches past 5km, the park brake will readjust automatically.
    12. The wheel removal sockets are a waste of time, by the time you need a replacement, the wheels are likely to be over-tightened and your just wasting new sockets. Get a 19mm twist socket, a 23mm 12 point socket in 1/2" and some electrical tape. Break the ring off with the 23mm socket (wack it into the security bolt) with a breaker bar sitting 180 degrees to the socket and give it a jiggle up and down. With the ring removed, now wack in the 19mm twist socket and turn the socket anti-clockwise with the breaker bar, the bolt should come out. If you do it very often, its as painless as it gets and takes me around 5 minutes per bolt.
    13. SAC clutch setting tools. If you want it to work.
    14. 1/2" long impact extensions to 3/8". Never impact the bolts onto the block when assembling.
    15. A very powerful 1/2" impact gun (wheel bolt torques are relatively high + over-torqued wheel bolts past 140nm ). 17mm deep impact socket (any will do as they typically lasts me 3 months on the Milwaukee Fuel 1/2" impact gun. So buy lots of cheap 17mm deep impact sockets.
    16. Plastic trim tools for prying on interior trims (if your like me and have small hands, I simply pull the trims off).
    17. Torx screwdrivers (T10-T30)
    18. Multiple extension sizes.
    19. Semi-Deep sockets (for removing the evaporator on X car's, 1 fastener in the engine bay by the firewall).
    20. Flexible hose clamp nut drivers (5.5mm, 6mm, 7mm, 8mm) Blue-Point and Wera makes them.
    21. Spring hose clamp plier (the cable type and the normal type) Snap On's ones.
    22. Snap-On Techangle torque wrenches (Most bolts on the car are stretch bolts).
    23. Long 3/8" ratchet (For turning the crank in fine precision). Snap-On's one is good.

I’d say if your wanting a real beginner guide to bmw I’d make the list like this
      1) 17mm shallow wall 1/2in impact for wheels.
      2) 24mm socket for filter caps.
      3) 18mm long wrench for alignments,guiros, some suspension(along with a 21mm wrench and a 24mm socket)
      4) a 1/4 8mm,10mm socket with a bit power tool adapter for under body bolts and most trim panels in engine including intake filter housing.
      5) coolant hose clamps to prevent coolant lose during repair.
      6) t09-t55 there is a lot more torques then inverted torques. Yea the alt has 4 bolt that are torques but there is way more that is 8mm and t25’s then inverted torques in these cars. The belt pully is a t55 but some people use a t60 once they stripped it out.
      7) ista p is ok if your working on cars from 2011 but most cars now a days use ista4
      8) Mac, Cornwall, Snap-on make these coolant hose pry tools that are amazing to use on most things there’s not sharp edge so it make pulling the nice wood trim easy with out thinking your going to brake them.
      9) time.... I see you’ve worked on them for a while. But the biggest thing you need is time. I can do a oil filter housing gasket in 15 min but I didn’t just learn the tips and tricks over night. My formen let me play around and learn before he taught me the big stuff because with out that mindset of what needs to be done before I would have broke a lot.
      10) you need someone one the inside who’s works at a bmw dealership for 6+ years as a performance tech who can send you the repair instructions on everything(hit me up if you need them of if you want a bmw only tool box review)
Good job with everything man! Looking good just thought I’d throw my piece in there. Hit me up if you need anythinf

Great vid FRM!!! Ahhh BMW's aka burning money in my wallet! Worked on a few at my last shop and all these tools def come in handy. Doing oil changes on minis was a challenge sometimes and we handled it! The ones with the plastic housing had to use an oil filter socket with a universal and extension, even had to tuck the coolant reservoir out of the way. Aye co rumba!

Great video thanks brother. I sure am glad I didn't work on cars. I complained when Detroit, Cummins and Cat went gear drive on the fuel pump and other things. Then a different program for the computers and Cat isn't cheap. Sounds like every car has there own thing going to. I just ordered some stuff to work on my son's Honda. I have tools for Simi trucks and some pickup trucks not a Honda car. Keep up the great work see you in the next video sorry for ranting on

In this case I'll save some money. Oddly enough, in 37 years of wrenching, I have never had a BMW in the shop. I've worked on just about everything else. Of all my mechanic friends, I don't know of anyone that has. Rural Michigan about 80 miles north of Detroit. Maybe 4 or 5 times a year I'll see one on the road.

Thanks for another great video! I started as a professional technician when I was 19 at Mercedes. 24/7 studding and working my ass off I was a master diagnostician by 23. By age 25 I was my benz dealers top producer for diagnostic. And in 2017 at 26 I quit working on cars professionally because Mercedes killed my passion. Don't MATTER How Good You ARE, euro trash is a BITCH! Over engineering at its finest. Everything has a control module, computer and endless can faults. Diagnostic time for these cars is grossly unfair to the tech, "I was very efficient and knew all pattern failures" no way around if. Pure junk cars. Oh and the tools, $10k invested in mostly 2nd hand SNAP ON. Ugh...

These Eurotrash cars are the absolute worse. The Germans have gone from making the best cars in the world to making cars having the most plastic in the world. Nobody should own these cars, they are lease only specials. After three years they're ready to be converted into rebar, or at least the small number of parts made from steel used by them are. The most overrated cars on earth.
