When you put it like that, it makes me realize that all 1,000,000 people without fail watching a group play boardgames and explain new rules at the time proves card animes realistic
Hey Polygon! I just want you all to know I hope you’re all doing well! You bring all of us so much joy especially in these times. Thank you for the laughs and comfort! I think I can speak for everyone when I say we are very grateful for all of you!!! Best wishes!
I've never played this game in my life, but something about the negotiating and bluffing, weird powers and maths made me feel like this was something familiar, like a game I've played. Then it hit me: Munchkin! The game and the way you played it reminded me of Munchkin, which I believe would be a fun game for Overboard, because it can both be short, leading to multiple rounds, and because it can lead to high drama.
When someone said that it wouldn't be out of place if there was a card where you have to say you're sorry, my mind also went to Munchkin for some reason.
Steve Jackson, Munchkin designer, was a big Cosmic Encounter fan before he designed Munchkin. Steve even wrangled a few Cosmic Aliens into the Space Gamer Magazine.
i love the fact that this game is designed in a way where you can pick an objectively over-powered species with the sole counter-measure being “if you pick one of the OP ones, then everyone will bully you, so picking a weaker species might be better for the long game”. for a game like this it honestly feels like a great way to make players start making risk-reward choices right out of the gate
So excited to see people playing Cosmic Encounter! One of my favorite games! A note, just in case this is relevant; there should only be 10 flares total in the deck; some people's hands looked really flare heavy
Not to mention that these guys missed a line in the rules which really helps to streamline the game: "a player may use no more than one flare per encounter."
My first new Overboard Episode! I only recently discovered Polygon and this is the first Overboard Episode I have seen come out (although I watched literally all the other episodes as well)
Anyone remember when Griffin and Justin did an overview of tabletop simulator? It makes you wonder...would this game be better if the board was actually Steve Buscemi's face?
I'd like to see more of this game, seems like there's a lot of possibilities with it. I also wouldn't mind seeing 'Overboard Replays' where you revisit some of the previous games you've only played once
46:04 Now, if I'm not wrong, since Brian's card says "before any other effects are applied", it would only divide Clayton's *10* by three, then it would have 23 subtracted from it, and then his human card would turn it back into a 42, so he would have actually won against Brian 56 to 31. And even if the subtraction happened after the 42, it would still be 33 to 31. Regardless, I thoroughly enjoyed the video as always. Please never stop making Overboard.
actually my theory is that simone serves the literary purpose of the everyman, like watson in sherlock holmes or nick carraway in the great gatsby. she is the vessel by which the viewer relates to and understands the world, ie the events of each episode of overboard. that's why she's the only one who catches on to being gaslighted by brian in werewolf (though she is quickly convinced afterwards) and she begins to graffiti the stars in cosmic encounter when the viewer too is confused by the events that occur.
